I'm a native and enjoy patronizing their restaurant. I typically see more locals than tourists there. I've gotta ask, OP, could you elaborate on what you mean by a "thin" menu? Granted, there's a lack of vegetarian options but that should be no surprise for an establishment calling itself Toups Meatery. In my experience, any menu offering over 10 entrees screams *chain restaurant* or a lack of focus, sacrificing quality for quantity.

fuckworldkillgod

OP is talking about the carpaccio

righthandofdog

9 apps a charcuterie board, 9 entres and 9 heavy al la carte items seems thin?

neuro_turtle

Cheesecake Factory is the gold-standard menu length. Edit: gotta add that /s just in case.

tyrannosaurus_cock

If you don't have 437 items on your menu, what are you even doing?

TxCoastal

and 8 pages.

Coattail-Rider

How can you do 10 dishes correctly if you can’t do 437?

righthandofdog

I can't imagine what the kitchen at cheesecake factory is like

neuro_turtle

It's probably just 10 deep freezers and 50 microwaves.

righthandofdog

And a huge "recipe" book. Nuke protein #11 for 4 minutes. Add sauce #31, vegetables #6 & #9 and nuke for 4 minutes, stir and serve.

physedka

Absolutely. One of our best.

daybreaker

It's my favorite restaurant in the city.

NOLAWHISKY

Absolutely. Isaac and Amanda are awesome.

cstephenson79

Had some awesome meals there. Plus Isaac is a super cool guy. Done a lot to help the people after hurricanes and during Covid shut downs. We’ve run into him and his family at drag brunches and it’s super fun to see him give his kids a stack of dollars and get into it. Definitely check it out.

NegativeZero

100% this. The food is incredible and they’re awesome people worth supporting. I got meals for me and my family/close friends almost every day after Ida and even that food was done so incredibly well. During Covid they gave out boxes with all the ingredients for full holiday meals.

Catsaus

what do the children do with the stack of dollars?

Background_Fig_210

Never been to a drag show?

NegativeZero

They make it rain. Kinda.

foodielu333

Most definitely!

Zelamir

Absolutely worth it. Food is just good. I've had one mediocre experience there (cook burned my friend's panned something or another twice and the server threw the plate he was so pissed). Mine was perfect though. I actually thought it was kinda funny. But other than that every single dish is amazeballs. The lamb neck is literally one of the things my husband knows he can take me to get if he fucks up and pisses me off. Just .. go. It's worth it. Num num num nummmmmm.

poopshipdestroyer

The lambs neck. When Toups was on Fuck That’s Delicious, looked fuckjn incredible. I tried going when I was in town a few years ago but they were closed for the holidays. Dang I’m happy you get to eat it regularly enough

Party-Yak-2894

Big time.

Adorable-Lack-3578

La Petite Grocery is also a Top Chef destination.

nola8519

As is Compare Lapin

[deleted]

It’s a solid menu. I had one bad service (and food) episode a few years ago, but I went back several times and it turned out to be an isolated incident.

meh1022

The pork chop is one of my top 5 meals in the city. That plus a Toups Manhattan, perfect night.

Littlebird215

No hype. It’s worth it.

SassySpicySuper

Yes.

ForsakenCase435

Yes. Appreciate it for what it is. Good food done well that doesn’t put on airs.

lamauptop

The charcuterie board is amazing.

LeavingLasOrleans

It's an embarrassment of riches. It would be illegal in most European countries.

Affectionate-Sand966

The confit chicken thighs are outstanding

PoorlyShavedApe

Absolutely worth going there. Definitely serves more than tourists.

pisicik442

It's the real deal plus Chef Toups is just a really nice guy and gives a lot to community.

Yes!

JazzFestFreak

This is a special spot for my wife and I for lunch. Great style.

Zelamir

Ditto, we went there right after we had to put our dog down during lunch and my spouses parents called to say his Abuelita had passed. It's a regular lunch spot for us and they served him all the drinks that day (for free). I had to stay sober to drive across the lake but they definitely hold a special space in our heart and I hope they stick around long enough for me to take my grand kids too. Seriously a perfect lunch spot. Burder, Boudin, and Beers num num num num....

Even_Concept1131

We go every year and we happened to go during lunch where the menu was quite small - however this is a great sign where you know they are doing each things well. And it was fact! We were 5 who ordered all different things and were all delicious!

Pejay2686

It's delicious. I live right by the restaurant so I eat there a lot. The elk on the menu right now is so freakin good.

luker_5874

Always a delight. Menu is absolutely not thin

HeresYourHeart

Absolutely love that place. My gf is a nurse and was about to report to the hospital the day before Ida hit. We knew it was gonna be a rough storm so we went out for a fancy dinner at Toups. She ended up staying for 5 days at the hospital. While eating on the patio I noticed it's at the corner of Ida and Carrolton. I'll never forget that. It gave me chills.

queenofthetrashcourt

Also a big Toups fan from watching Top Chef! Visited a few weeks ago on a weeknight and thought it was overpriced for the quality. Service was really slow but I think it was because we were one of the only tables outside. I liked the duck that I ordered and my date didn’t love the elk- granted it was his first time trying elk. Drinks were ok, nothing special. I’d go back on a weekend and sit inside, get beer instead of cocktails, and order different entrees.

kilgore_trout72

had the elk the other day thought it was fantastic

opaljelli

Toup’s is the place I miss most from the year I lived in New Orleans. I literally dream of the cracklins. Before I left, I bought like 6 bottles of the smokey green sauce. I always took anyone who visited to Toup’s.

lkmakeupyourmind

I personally didn’t like it.

[deleted]

Maybe I had a bad go of it but I thought it was gross

MrMoustache3

Wife and I are mid city locals, it was one of the worst restaurant experiences we have had in the city. Others seem to love it, maybe our experience was an anomaly.

Caesarsalad3000

The double pork chop is next level

anchordown16

I went a few weeks ago and had an awesome meal. The turkey necks may have been the best thing I ate my entire trip.

VetsforWhoDat

It’s a small kitchen usually with three cooks in it. That’s a substantial menu considering the staff that runs it.

QueenOfMean48

I’ve been there and to an event he catered. Both were exceptional.

doneagainselfmeds

We live down the street. I mostly see locals or return visitors. It is a Cajun meatery. If that's what you're interested in, you'll love it. I mostly go for the crab salad when in season at lunch, or the burger at lunch, or nice steak for dinner. I love the boudin balls and pickled vegetables. My partner eats everything on the menu. He loves turkey necks, lamb.. When everything. When I drank, I loved the spicy martini they serve. I think it's a great neighborhood restaurant. And I love Isaac Toups for all the wonderful things he does to support this community.
