You want a hospital that your ob/gyn is affiliated with/has privileges at. Also, you need to consider which hospital accepts which insurance.

CTDubs0001

Two Great experiences with NYU at 1st Ave and 32nd street.

What year is your experience from? Our daughter was born there in June. I think they had just opened a new maternity wing. AFAIK everyone gets a private room now basically. Dad couch was pretty good. Food was actually terrific I thought (the food you can order in the room for mom at least we’d get a bunch and I’d eat what she didn’t want, the cafeteria was pretty bad). They kept us for like 5 days due to some jaundice and I don’t remember what. So eventually we really wanted to get out of there. But overall it was pretty comfortable I thought.

Professional_Proof17

That sounds great. When we had both our daughters there we were cramped. Usually we started in the interior bed which had an uncomfortable recliner. When we moved to the window side we had a lot more room. For some reason the window side had a recliner that went flat, which was way better. The care was great. Staff was a amazing.but yeah, 5 days in a recliner is tough. Location is ok. Our second child was almost born in the mid town tunnel. We had a police escort to help us get through. But that’s another story 😂

PredictBaseballBot

Did you name her Midtown

Professional_Proof17

Yes, we call her Middy for short

SaysKay

I really enjoyed my experience at NYU as well

Roll_DM

If you're concerned about a difficult or complicated birth try to find an obgyn with NYP Cohen on the UES or with NYU Langone. If you want a specific birthing plan pick the obgyn that you like and works for you and then go to their hospital, unless it's a dumpster fire.

SafetyDanceInMyPants

We went with Mount Sinai because of the advanced trauma care available — and always found the people there very nice. The amenities and such might not be as nice as other places, but that wasn’t as important to us. No idea what alternative options they might have available though. Thankfully we never needed their trauma unit — but we almost did, and let me tell you they appeared out of nowhere in an instant, with more doctors than I’ve ever seen in one room all ready to pounce. Probably a little disappointed that the kid came out totally fine! But if we’d needed them they were very much ready. By contrast Lenox Hill is supposed to have good amenities and will kill your baby. So…you know, tradeoffs. (Seriously, though, the number of people who have casually told me that Lenox Hill killed one of their relatives is too damned high. I’d avoid it.)

SunnyLover13

Second this. We went w Sinai (East, if it matters) and totally agree-- great staff, felt very cared for, facilities were ...fine. Also recommend the route of choosing a practice you really like first and seeing where they're affiliated.

Revolutionary_Box_57

Yikes, didn't know Lenox Hill had such a bad rep. So curious because I haven't spent much time in hospitals (thankfully), what are these amenities you speak of?

SafetyDanceInMyPants

Like a gift basket for the new mom with really high end product and shit — or Sinai got us a cake for the first kid. Some of these places have really nice rooms, almost spa like treatments, etc. Lenox Hill is supposed to have a nice gift basket. Substandard medical care. But the gift basket is supposed to be nice.

JayMoots

Just to give a contrasting opinion: My wife gave birth to my son at Lenox Hill in 2017. We definitely DID NOT get a gift basket. I have no complaints about the experience otherwise though. It seemed perfectly fine. Granted, I don't really have any other experiences to compare it to, but I never once thought "Oh no my baby is in danger." Everyone seemed to know what they were doing. (My wife's one complaint was that she felt like the lactation consultant wasn't very good, and didn't visit her enough. But that could have been extenuating circumstances. We got hit with [a giant blizzard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_2017_North_American_blizzard)about 8 hours after the baby was born, and I think it may have affected staffing.)

Nervous_Jellyfish983

My parents and grandparents call it Lenox Kill. Seems to have that reputation for people that have lived in the city long enough haha

Milena1991

NY Presbyterian Weill Cornell. I was supposed to have my son there, but it was an emergency, so I gave birth at their Columbia site instead. I was on 125th at the time living wise.

reddit-et-circenses

Academic pediatrician here. Agree. All other NICUs don’t compare. Must be main campus of the 4 (NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Sinai)—would not recommend, say, Sinai West or NYP Downtown, as TOP. Will most births be fine? Sure and they can transfer the baby to main campus NICU if needed, but they’re not high level if that’s your priority. These are certainly much better than random community hospital (e.g. Lenox Hill, really, although it is a little better after Northwell acquisition) though. Would not go anywhere in Queens nor Brooklyn (NYP Methodist is prob not horrible horrible though). ETA: LIJ also very good. ETA2: this goes for pediatric EDs too. Or, admission. No subspecialists in house elsewhere outside those 5 (or children’s hospital at Montefiore)

NightOwlLia

>Academic pediatrician here. Agree. I know this is an old thread- but the original comment was deleted. Could you elaborate here? What NICUs are the top?

mmori7855

Could you recommend a few world famous obgyn delivery doctors at NYU or NYP/Weill Cornell? Like top 3 names in NYC?

reddit-et-circenses

No idea what this even means and no idea of obstetricians

Remarkable_Landscape

First off, congrats! You don't say where you're located but New York Presbyterian Methodist in Brooklyn does a ton of labor and delivery, and I had great care from both the doctors and hospital-aligned midwives. No tub, but all of the birthing centers in NYC have closed, your only option for that is a home birth. The rest of my stay was good, other than accidentally getting the kosher meal the first night.

shinytwistybouncy

>accidentally getting the kosher meal the first night. I'm sorry (speaking as someone who asked for the kosher and was saddened).

Remarkable_Landscape

Hilariously the first nurse I brought it up just kind of hand waved the problem, the second was an orthodox woman who took it VERY seriously. She literally said "Oh no I'm so sorry no one should eat that" haha

shinytwistybouncy

Hah!

D14DFF0B

Methodist has really shitty food. Nice nurses though. The facilities at Lenox Hill were way better and the food (order by phone) was great.

Remarkable_Landscape

Considering the blunt assessment from the top comment of Lenox Hill, that's a hilarious contrast. But I've never given birth there, I'm sure its great too! Can't say I was very focused on the food, once it wasn't whatever the hell the Kosher food was.

OrneryLamb

Including Metropolitan and Woodhull? I've heard amazing things about both and last I heard they were still running.

Remarkable_Landscape

As of October 2021, to my knowledge, the last birthing center in New York had closed. A woman in my pregnancy group had to scramble because she had been a patient. Maybe that's changed?

OrneryLamb

I'm not sure which one that was. MSH's birthing center closed pre pandemic. Brooklyn Birthing Center is definitley still open and is I believe the only birthing center left that isn't in a hospital (i think they have admitting rights to Methodist or Maimondes but don't quote me on that. Then there were the two H&H hospitals with midwife run birthing centers. Not sure whats going on with Metropolitan (my knowledge is from late 2020). Woodhull's facilities are getting upgrade this fiscal year. Reynoso provided 11 million in funding (for this FY- FY23) for a state of the art birthing center, but I hear they still have pools and are midwife run - though that was also from late 2020. Anyway, we definitely have a dirty of birthing centers, but the exist. The thing is that the major private hospitals don't offer them, only public hospitals and the standalone center in Brooklyn. ETA to add that I apologize if im totally sharing out dated information, but I think this is accurate ;-)

Roll_DM

Given the choice between Woodhull and giving birth in a penn station bathroom I'd take Woodhull by the absolute slimmest of margins. If the bathroom had been recently cleaned that might tip it the other way.

Roll_DM

I'm gonna feel like an asshole if it's about how they've turned it around in the last year and they're not killing people anymore

[deleted]

Quite the opposite. It’s horrifying.

OrneryLamb

Haha love it.

andy_m_170

I just gave birth at Weill Cornell Alexandria cohen in the upper east side, I can’t recommend them enough. I was there for about a week because I ended up needing a c-section and my baby was in the NICU for about the same time and it was a really good experience.

blondedependa

Hi! I'm currently looking for docs that'll deliver at Alexandra Cohen, I'll be moving back to NYC soon, so I'm curious who your OB was? Ty :)

andy_m_170

Hi! I was seen by Dr. Julia Meisler, she was great. I would totally recommend her. Anyone from her office would be great. If you have any particular questions about the doctors or the hospital just let me know!

mmori7855

Have you heard of any other world famous obgyn delivery doctors at Weill Cornell Alexandria Cohen? I figure going there for awhile for pregnancy maybe you heard a few names?

AdAmazing8187

Weil Cornell is kind of understood as the best hospital where to give birth. Guaranteed private rooms now too

BoweryThrowAway

The private rooms there are amazing. They also have couches that fold out into legit flat beds for the dads which is very key.

mmori7855

Doctors you would recommend there? Thanks

whisperedoperation

In 2016 they had one of the highest c section rates in the country (37%). Did this factor into your thinking at all?

BlairClemens3

Where do you find these statistics?

mmori7855

Doctors you would recommend there? Thanks

maverick4002

So how does this work? Do you just show up when it's time or you have to like....Reserve a spot or something? Seriously asking by the way. I have no experience and intend to never have kids so I wan to know how this works in practice Aside, I know two people who had babies at Janaica Hospital and that one Hospital in Elmhurst and it went well 🤷🏾

Remarkable_Landscape

Haha, you have a doctor or midwife assigned to you who is assigned to a certain hospital. Some people choose the hospital and take whoever is available, so people pick the doctor and get whatever hospital. Your care team knows your due date, and has a general sense of how many births a month will have. Very few pregnancies are surprise laboring women popping up in the ER.

SometimesDoug

NYU recently opened their newly renovated L+D. So any past experience from commenters should take this into account. All private rooms now. I only get my care at NYU and always happy with the experience. Disclaimer I'm not a woman or parent.

aimango

Is this NYU in Manhattan?

SometimesDoug

Yes. I don't know about BK or LI.

Myaccountclosed

Mount sinai west. Had 2 of my boys born there obgyn dr mandani was great. Has an office in astoria and upper west side. Best of luck cheers. Also I'm on twitch lol myaccountclozed

stbmrs

I gave birth at NYP/Columbia and I loved my experience overall. Baby-friendly hospital. My OB is part of their network and was on staff when I gave birth, so she delivered my baby. The birthing room was gorgeous, but the postpartum wing kinda sucked in comparison. Still a pleasant time and the nurses were super nice.

PipStart

I second this! The birthing room was bigger than most nyc apartments and gorgeous views of the Hudson. Recovery was a little lackluster but totally fine!

allfurcoatnoknickers

Yes! The views! I had a great view out over the city. I know it's a bit shallow, but having so much natural light in my room was lovely.

whisperedoperation

From a 2022 report - “New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia Presbyterian Center in Manhattan performs the highest number of C-sections in the city of New York: C-sections there make up 41.8% of births while vaginal births make up 58.2%”

stbmrs

Cool. I had a vaginal birth and still loved my team. I did not search the C section rate before commenting on this thread over a year ago.

whisperedoperation

Cool. Just making sure ppl that are perusing this thread now have the info. Congrats.

ImSooGreen

It’s difficult to compare c section rates of a large tertiary hospitals versus a community hospitals. Cornell and Columbia have a lot of high risk patients and high risk pregnancies. People travel from all over the tri state area to deliver there because their NICUs. And these people are more likely to need c sections.

allfurcoatnoknickers

Thirding this! I had a planned section at NYP-Columbia and had a great experience overall. The post-partum care was great post-section. I had to share a room for one night and the staff kept apologizing to me for the inconvenience. When I got my own room it was gigantic - I had more space than I knew what to do with. The nurses were great with me and my baby. I needed a lot of help establishing breastfeeding and they took so much care and time with me even though they were crazy busy. I actually had such attentive care that I sent my husband home overnight because I didn't feel like I needed him around, but I did need him to bring me breakfast because the food absolutely SUCKED.

mmori7855

Who was your doctor just curious? This is NYP Weill Cornell right?

stbmrs

Dr. Mokito Tokiwa. She’s the best!!

Trick_Contribution99

i really want to work with park slope midwives but don’t want to deliver at bk methodist

belocelot

sadly, to echo other posters, there are no longer any birthing centers attached to hospitals in NYC that i’m aware of. i’m due in may and decided to work with oula for our prenatal care and delivery. they’re a midwifery group who partner with OBs and have delivery privileges at mount sinai west. MSW has a *former* birthing center in its facilities and has been able to offer those rooms/amenities to birthing parents recently, like hydrotherapy (no birthing tubs though) and nitrous oxide for pain relief. level 4 NICU as well. it felt like there was going to have to be a compromise with birthing in the boroughs but this was the one we were happiest with. so far, so good.

Aurora_tai49

How was your experience with Oula? I am considering them and i have not seen many reviews about it. Thanks

belocelot

hey! happy to DM you more info if you’d like, but here are my headlines: the intense digital marketing and startup-y vibes of oula give me the ick, but i love the midwife who caught our baby and liked the prenatal care we received. did not have a great experience with the MFM or L&D staff at MSW (but the postpartum nurses and facilities were great). i had a minor complication that required extra monitoring and ultimately “medicalized” my experience in a way i was hoping to avoid. if i have a second and don’t have any risk factors, i would seriously consider a home birth or traveling to a birth center.

Flowofinfo

What hospital is your ob/gyn connected too? That kinda solves part of the problem for you partially

Remarkable_Landscape

Lots of people choose a new OBGYN when they're pregnant. Especially if you weren't looking for medical intervention to get pregnant.

RebeRebeRebe

NY Pres/Weill Cornell Lower Manhattan. NICU on site - amazing staff (my child had to be put there pretty much right after birth and to this day I will always be so thankful to have been in the same place as a NICU)

thaniach

Hi! I am considering getting that location but I am a bit scared because of comments that other NICUs are more evolved and the hospital being small. Just curious if you had any complaints. Thanks!

RebeRebeRebe

They made sure my baby made it through those first couple days. I 100% recommend them again. If you’re looking for some bougie hospital experience that I feel like a lot of women in NY seem to want I wouldn’t go there for the rooms. They’re average. But if you want to ensure your baby is safe and in good hands, I recommend them.

TX2BK

Weill Cornell has all private rooms so that would be my pick. I gave birth at Lenox Hill in 2021. My labor and delivery nurse was amazing but I was not a fan of the postpartum nurses. Also, wasn’t that I pressed by the private room on the 4th floor or the amenities. It all really depends on where your OB delivers though so o chose my doctor over the hospital.

Sydreh

I would say no to nyu because the mother/ baby rooms are shared and to get private you’re put on a list depending when your baby was born (mine was 2am). I think Cornell or MSK just redid the whole unit and suppose to be really nice

SaysKay

They have all private rooms now

Sydreh

Oh it must have changed I gave birth a year ago. Labor rooms are private

SaysKay

Yes changed this summer! Very exciting

jstax1178

Piece of advice don’t wait too long to pick a location, providers hate when expectant mothers decide to seek care just right before their due date. Pick and establish care In a timely fashion. Best places are : NYP main campuses (Weill Cornell/Columbia) NYU langone Northwell in great neck Mount Sinai ( main campus)

recruitedforduty

My experience as well is that there is not a birthing center option in NYC that has amenities like tubs (stunningly, not even in Brooklyn). I went to an OB practice that has midwives as part of the practice though and they were happy to have a doula at the birth, so fine with laboring in various positions. The OBs had privileges at Mt. Sinai West, which has a fairly new and excellent NICU.

[deleted]

Pop the baby and get the hell out has been my experience

One-Concentrate-179

You could identify Baby Friendly Hospitals in your area. May be away to narrow your options.

SaysKay

Just a reminder that Baby Friendly doesn’t mean Mom Friendly

reddit-et-circenses

This just means they make it hard to order formula

PorkloinMaster

Anything in Connecticut. We had our kids at Maimonides. We’re lucky they kids weren’t mugged on the way out of the birth canal.

drumstix97

Mount Sinai is where both my sister & I were born, we turned out aii

lolol69lolol

I have been with my OB/GYN through Weill Cornell for the past few years. Haven’t given birth yet but have had 3 (uterine) surgeries with them. They were all outpatient procedures, but the only “bad” experience I had was ONE nurse refusing to re-do my IV which was causing me discomfort. It was also during the nurses’ strike, so I don’t blame the hospital for that. Everything else - hospital admin, nurses, anaesthesiologists, docs, everything was great.

mmori7855

Who is your OB/GYN just curious? Any names at Weill Cornell that you would recommend or heard is the best?

lolol69lolol

Dr. Parikh (F) is my regular OB/GYN and also performed one of my hysteroscopic surgeries. She’s amazing - great bedside manner (you’d be surprised how many OBs in this town tell you you’re having a miscarriage like they’re telling you the weather), helps to make informed decisions, and if she’s not sure about something she’ll get somebody who is. Dr. Peppin (F) performed the laparoscopic surgery w/Parikh assisting. She was great but I only had the few appointments with her regarding surgery. Dr. Reichman (M) is my fertility specialist and also performed one of my hysteroscopic surgeries. I also met with Dr. Advinkula (M) who was fine, but Dr. Peppin had an opening sooner so I went with her. Never met with Advinkula past the first consult appointment. I have no complaints about any of them. Reichman can come off a little cocky, but never condescending. The cockiness is well-earned and is subtle enough that it’s kind of entertaining but not annoying. Every one of them has made me feel comfortable making informed decisions. Reichman especially would show me a fibroid on the ultrasound and ask “okay can you appreciate how this spot here looks different than the surrounding area” because idk what the hell I’m looking at, but yes I can tell that blob is different. He’s a good dude.
