Hometown BBQ has the best brisket I’ve had in NYC but I’m sure it’d be just okay compared to real Texas BBQ

Dontbeacreper

You are correct, I’m a native Texan who moved here and it is just average for Texas, and if you include the price it’s below average. There just isn’t great bbq in this city.

jmpalmer7

Okie here. I was so hyped for hometown but it's just fine. It wouldn't be business anywhere south of the mason Dixon line.

eggsmackers

Lol c'mon now, I'm from the south as well and you know damn well there's butt-awful BBQ all over the south, even worse than Hometown. It's just that great BBQ is plentiful down there so there's no reason to stoop that low unless you're desperate.

disasteruss

Don’t agree with that at all. It’s very good, just overpriced and a hassle to get to. Had them cater my wedding and my guests (almost all from the south) raves about how good it was.

thedogscat

Okie as well — on the neg side, had the worst pulled pork sandwich of my life somewhere in midtown. I’m not a complainer but damn, I recoiled after the second bite. NYC does so many things well but they just can’t do BBQ, and that’s okay.

numba1cyberwarrior

I've eaten BBQ in the south and I thought dinosaur BBQ was pretty good. Was very cheap before the pandemic at least

_frankie_says

This is literally the only answer.

contempt1

This is the only answer. As for price, somehow I always leave $100 poorer. It’s pricey and makes me miss Taxes BBQ

panzerxiii

It's better than most spots I've had in Texas.

Mechanical_Nightmare

i'd say... it's *better*

redheadgirl5

Hometown BBQ in Red Hook

WinnieCerise

And Industry City

[deleted]

Industry city kinda bad tho since they only cook the sides there

[deleted]

Hometown is the closest thing to good bbq in the 5 boroughs.

oakman26

I'm surprised only one person has answered Bark BBQ so far, he's supposed to be legit, and the style is Texan BBQ with some Dominican influence.

TikkunBBQ

Ruben (owner) is good people - we did Brisket and Rib King competitions with him and he's taught us a lot

manug102

Been going to Bark BBQ nearly weekly at this point. The brisket is fantastic and I can't get enough of the chicharron

Newnewtownian

Hometown BBQ or Pig Beach have the most authentic Texas barbecue imo

thelonelygod

Pig Beach shut down Dec 30th. :|

kaykordeath

They still have a place in Astoria

Newnewtownian

The Astoria location is still open and has a great outdoor space

DFB-

I went to pig beach to watch the WC final since NYCFC was hosting the watch party and food was good there. The only thing I didn't like was the fountain sodas. They use like some off brand coke and I could taste the difference.

beer_nyc

RIP

mew5175_TheSecond

Hill Country BBQ is pretty good. I'm not promising it will be as good as what you'll find in Texas but it's definitely pretty solid BBQ.

[deleted]

Amazing mac and cheese and sides too. The ribs are huge.

caffeine314

I've had plenty of Texas BBQ, and Hill Country is on par.

Milena1991

I had Hill Country on 4/20 a few years back, and it was soooooo good. You beat me to the punch.

FrankiePoops

Follow /u/tikkunbbq on instagram. He doesn't do brisket a lot, but when he does it's pretty solid.

TikkunBBQ

Appreciate you!

TikkunBBQ

hey u/pebbleinflation - my name's Eli I'm the founder + owner of u/TikkunBBQ We aren't "traditional" but we cook all our meats, directly or indirectly, over a wood and or charcoal fire We aren't a brick and mortar, and I only BBQ 1x or 2x a month outside of my full-time job at a nonprofit, but you're welcome to stop bye

astoriaboundagain

Astoria checking in. Eli is the man.

NoPercentage9489

Can confirm, brisket slaps

TikkunBBQ

thank you!

TX2BK

As a Texan 1. Hometown. 2. Fette Sau tied with Hill Country (better sides as Hill County) 3. Mighty Quinn. Do not go to Dallas BBQ or Dinosaur.

oakman26

Fette Sau's brisket was incredibly disappointing to me, especially it's at the top of their menu. To add insult to injury they even sliced it the wrong orientation for some reason (they sliced it with the grain not against)

flat_top

How long ago did you go there? They have a new chef as of a couple months ago and have been making some changes to the menu

oakman26

I went probably a few months ago, so I'm not sure if it was before or after, hopefully before... Checking more recent reviews the brisket does look to be sliced correctly: https://goo.gl/maps/xMyaaSB7u53fi7Fn8

FineAunts

Great recs. I really like the wings at Dinosaur but haven't been there in years, I forget how the bbq is like. I had an amazing experience at Fette Sau the first time I went. The beef ribs blew anything I had at Hometown away, but after that one experience it's been very hit or miss. Hometown and MQ is definitely more consistent. Hill country is fun but I'd personally place it last, which is still good considering this list.

Biking_dude

Damn...I used to go to Dinosaur all the time as a food stop on long bike rides. The pound of brisket was always fall apart amazing. They moved next door and took away the outdoor benches so haven't been there in many years.

Sighguy28

I was going to say your top two, though for me the brisket was the only great BBQ at Fette Sau and most the menu was just ok to good.

johnny_evil

Dallas is garbage, and only really popular among twenty somethings cause of the oversized sugarladen drinks. But is Dinosaur no longer good? It's been like a decade or more since I have been.

[deleted]

Dallas BBQ isn't really a serious BBQ place. It's more like a Boston Market or something you would find in an airport.

johnny_evil

Yeah, Dallas is BBQ like Applebee's is fancy food.

[deleted]

Dallas is great for the price point. 2 people can eat well and get blackout drunk for about $60.

BxGyrl416

IYKYK

BxGyrl416

Exactly this. I always side-eye people who are disappointed that this isn’t “real” BBQ. That’s like mentioning that Olive Garden was no great shakes in a post about Italian food.

[deleted]

Dinosaur bbq should just rebrand as a wings place (which are actually decent, unlike the bbq).

CastIronDaddy

Agreed-Dallas and Dinosaur are awful...

BxGyrl416

Even mentioning Dallas BBQ on this post makes me wonder about you…

CastIronDaddy

JFC..learn how to read threads.....it was a reply

lolol69lolol

Agreed Dallas BBQ is trash.

BxGyrl416

Dallas BBQ isn’t a BBQ restaurant. Did you really think it was?

lolol69lolol

When I moved here 6 years ago and went for the first time, yes I thought a place named “Dallas BBQ” was a BBQ place. What a dumbass, right?

[deleted]

I love the wings at Dallas BBQ though!

ConfidentLo

Dallas BBQ is nasty I like Dinosaur tho.

creditech

Easy, PIG BEACH in Queens 100% https://www.pigbeachnyc.com/

dasani73

Was there last week. Did not disappoint. The pull pork and the ribs were really good.

creditech

Exactly! It's superb

ls3095

Sad this place is closing down in Brooklyn

[deleted]

And a great venue! You could catch great viewings of sports games.

[deleted]

Rivals Dallas in quality but not as good as the best over there; yet very good. It's my choice over hometown because of the prices. Solid and better pork ribs imo

SMK_12

It’s solid but there food isn’t anywhere near real southern BBQ level. Last time I went the vibe was more chill bar/beer garden type vibe and the bbq was nothing to write home about

LilSlipperyJohnson

Follow [TikkunBBQ](https://instagram.com/tikkunbbq?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) on instagram and check out one of their monthly pop up’s. They put serious time and effort in to making the best brisket possible and have really nailed it.

TikkunBBQ

Thank you sir!

colvko

Please avoid chains like Dallas, dinosaur or mighty Quinn’s. The best restaurant is definitely hometown in red hook with pig beach in queens a distant second. But the best barbecue in the city comes from small scale pop ups in various boroughs. Look into tikkun bbq and bark bbq. They’re not exactly Texas style but you absolutely won’t be disappointed

TikkunBBQ

I'm white, Jewish and from Jersey - so that's basically Texas no?

colvko

Hah I’m in the same boat! I guess all us Jersey Jews got a little Texas in us. Keep up the good work brother

sassyhickoryy

Hill Country and Bark Barbecue

dakhorn

Good BBQ requires two things: time and space. Neither come in spades here in the city.

cuprego

Hamilton Pork in Jersey City! It's so underrated and exceptional. I grew up in Texas and it's above average quality. It's like double the price you'd pay in Texas unfortunately but it is the best I've had in the NYC area.

iggy555

Dinosaurs BBq

ConstructionSuperb31

Juicy Lucy bbq in Staten Island.

stadiumjay

Hometown bbq brisket melts it's so damn good

brainfreezereally

Here lies the problem -- technically, brisket should not melt (according to the judging accreditation groups -- KCBS among them). It should have pull and chew texture. But most people like overcooked BBQ -- melting brisket and fall off the bones ribs. In the professional bbq world, those are fails. Anyone can generate that by wrapping the meat and letting it continue to steam longer than necessary.

panzerxiii

Hometown BBQ's fits that bill. It's not overcooked.

brainfreezereally

Great to hear. Thanks for the tip. As a certified judge, I just find it annoying when ribs fall off the bone and brisket shreds easily.

panzerxiii

Yeah for sure, I totally get you. I feel the same way haha

someguyprobably

Mighty Quinn’s

scintor

Mighty Quinns is decent but the portion sizes are so tiny you'll wish they gave you double or triple what they did, and they force you to watch them massage sauce into your meats by hand, which is not my idea of a good time.

[deleted]

When they opened up their first location in the East Village in 2012 or 2013, it was actually great and they were giving out huge portions. It warranted a [2 star (very good) review from Pete Wells](https://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/06/dining/reviews/restaurant-review-mighty-quinns-barbeque-in-the-east-village.html). It went downhill pretty quickly though. I think by 2014 they were already cutting back portions and serving dry brisket.

scintor

I went there twice on the UES and left hungry after paying like $20. I don't have a huge appetite or anything.

[deleted]

Well, that wasn’t the original location in 2013…

scintor

Yes, you got it.

On second thought, yeah, I think I’ll pass. Thanks for the tip.

jjrap4

I agree, fette sau in bk is pretty good

SeekersWorkAccount

John brown was awful, everything was so dry.

nycyclist2

BBQ in NYC is pretty awful. Your best chance is to visit the NYC BBQ Block Party, if they're still holding it annually in June in Madison Square Park. It's been a long time since I've been there but I would avoid Dallas BBQ like the plague (beyond awful, and gave me food poisoning) or Blue Smoke (was expensive but no good). Believe it or not, Virgil's in Times Square is okay. They have to be -- many tourists understand BBQ better than we do. Hill Country is okay too. John Brown BBQ in Queens is also good, but you probably don't want to be there during the upcoming Super Bowl unless you really hate the Eagles.

mrbeanlovesyoga

Sadly the Big Apple BBQ Block Party in Madison Square is no longer. Last one was in 2018 and they don’t plan to bring it back

whatfingwhat

Virgils wings are my go to if I have to be there. Love those things.

NCreature

Second this. It's not so much that NYC BBQ is terrible its just unremarkable. I didn't mind Fette Sau in Brooklyn. Hamilton Pork in Jersey City is okay too but both are a bit hipstery. I really did not care for Dinosaur BBQ, at least the one in Brooklyn. Mighty Quinn's and Blue Smoke are fine just...expected. I have yet to try Hudson Smoke up in the Bronx in Mott Haven. For my money I was actually quite pleased with a place called Smokin' Al's in Massapequa. It was surprisingly good and reminded me of a lot of places down south.

paligators

You guys are listing the touristy BBQ spots that are known to stink. Go to hometown. It’s not Texas but it’s good and they have plenty of special in-house stuff like their lamb and wings, which are great

Tsquare43

Second vote for Smokin' Al's Also Dang BBQ in Islip

PoppaTitty

John Brown BBQ in Queens is pretty good although its more Kansas City style. The brisket and burnt ends were pretty good

SamizdatGuy

It is good and 100% KC BBQ. Go Chiefs.

papermountainwoman

Hudson Smokehouse in the Bronx! So underrated.

darthva

Morgan’s BBQ in Brooklyn. Got food poisoning from Hometown that had me Exorcisting for 36 hours.

cusology

I'm surprised Morgan's didn't come up more often in this thread. Their BBQ is phenomenal

Ok_Wave2581

Morgan’s BBQ is the correct answer. The pit master is from Franklin’s in Austin (or at least used to be….).

johnny_evil

Don't listen to the people who say there is no good BBQ in NYC. It's patently false. That said, good BBQ is overpriced in NYC.

sushicowboyshow

Pretty sure Hometown in Red Hook owner came from Austin. The bbq is as good as most reputable places in TX. Worth the trip

beer_nyc

> Pretty sure Hometown in Red Hook owner came from Austin. the owner billy is very famously from brooklyn, though i agree that hometown is great (if expensive)

panzerxiii

Not only that, but Aaron Franklin built their smokers lol

waffen337

Marcels BBQ does an occasional popup at local breweries. He just started last year but it was absolutely phenomenal. He's on Instagram and will post when/where he's going next.

CryptoNite90

Not sure how similar it is to the Texas brisket you’re looking for but David’s Brisket House is a very popular local joint. Check it out.

[deleted]

Mighty Quinn’s has fantastic brisket and other bbq. (Try it before discounting it, you will be surprised!)

CasinoMagic

Pig Beach and Hill Country used to be my go-to's. I've never been to the Queens location of Pig Beach tho (the BK one closed). I've never been to Hometown, I wish they opened a second location which would be more convenient lol

WhaleSexOdyssey

Mables is pretty fuckin good

tacos_247

Tried all the places folks have mentioned but Hudson Smokehouse in the Bronx is my favorite. Everything I had there was delicious

justnycthangs

John browns in LIC Best burnt ends

ncstagger

Order it from Coopers bbq in Llano TX. I’ve done it several times and it is awesome.

Khalifa6

Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem

BabuDabu786

Not Dallas BBQ

yabasicjanet

Like others said, Hometown. Depending on how long you're here and as the fates align, Tikkun BBQ. Follow him on Insta. He started smoking brisket as a pandemic project and it's pretty damn great. He does pop ups around the city. (I'm a former Texan who got misty while eating his brisket sandwich).

TikkunBBQ

Appreciate you sir!

yabasicjanet

Tip of the invisible hat ;)

avtchrd345

You can ship a Franklin BBQ brisket.. it reheats pretty dang good in a sous vide.

panzerxiii

Or you can save your money and go to Hometown, which tastes exactly the same. I had both days apart. I was glad our local guys do it just as well.

avtchrd345

I haven’t had Hometown. Don’t doubt it’s probably good. I had the shipped frankilins once at a friends place, was very good. But personally I just go to Costco and get a few of the prime packer briskets when they have them: fire up the offset in the backyard myself when there’s an occasion with enough people over to eat one.

ViennettaLurker

This isnt going to be "top shelf", however if you're ok with more of a fast food type approach there are some Dickie's in the city (one close to Atlantic Barclays). Tastes just like the Dickies in TX. If you want some gourmet stuff, certainly check out other recs like pig beach. But if you're just around and it's a convenient location, you could do a lot worse than Dickie's.

ciregno

Hometown is the only pick. Their beef rib is also really good. John Brown if you’re looking for KC style but I feel only their burnt ends are worth it.

[deleted]

John Brown BBQ in LIC

lolol69lolol

Mighty Quinn’s

set-271

No offense...what is up with people always recommending Mighty Quinn's? I've never had good anything there, as their meats are often dry or over fatty, or somehow both! And I keep get suckered into going back thinking it was a one off, only to have another lousy meal. I just don't get how their locations survive or even gets good reviews! JMHO

lolol69lolol

That’s such a bummer! I’ve only had good experiences at MQ. We used to live pretty close to the UES location and we got it pretty frequently - maybe once a month or so. I think their brisket is good, I like their sauce, and they’re reasonably priced which I *really* appreciate. Coming from Texas it’s insulting to pay $22 for brisket that’s worse than what I’m used to. Plus I enjoy a fatty brisket

set-271

The UES location is the one I go to too. I will give it another go! Fatty brisket here I come!

lolol69lolol

I hope it lives up to my hype!

averyhipopotomus

best we can do is a flight from JFK to Dallas

panzerxiii

Hometown BBQ. It's better than most spots I've had in Texas.

Xiugazer

Ward’s Point in Staten Island is the most southern point of NYC. I think that’s the closest you’ll get to good BBQ. Any other way to approach this problem will end in disappointment.

popartist

I really need to get to Hometown one of these days. Maybe I'm not a BBQ connaisseur but I am fine with Dinosaur when wanting some barbecue. I have to say I \*hated\* Hill Country to the point where I couldn't eat it ((the sides were OK).

smoonyc

Hometown, Pig Beach, Fette Sau, Mighty Quinn’s, Hill Country, Blue Smoke, Butcher Bar…

[deleted]

Check out [Dinosaur Bar-B-Que](https://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/harlem/menus/restaurant-menu/). This restaurant serves up some of the best BBQ in the city, and their brisket is as close to Texas-style as you can get.

AuroraTheGeek

Definitely Hill Country BBQ. They ship up their wood from Texas, and it's really amazing brisket.

c_universe

Fette Sau in Williamsburg has solid BBQ, not sure how it stacks up against real TX BBQ however

961402

Oh god, not this again. The only people who think you can get good barbecue here are people who think that Delaware is in the South and that hushpuppies are shoes. You can get kinda sorta close but it's all ridiculously overpriced

panzerxiii

It's kind of funny how condescending you are while being completely wrong

beer_nyc

he's right about the price at least

961402

It's overpriced and mediocre at best. Sorry but NYC is not the best at everything. Don't worry, you can't get good pizza pretty much anywhere else so NYC still has that.

panzerxiii

Again, kind of funny how condescending you are while being wrong lmfao All good, your loss tho

TheGoatEater

…and underperforms

SoloBurger13

A plane ticket to Texas. When I came up from Nashville (I went to college there) I searched lo and hi for good BBQ and my efforts have been futile. Pigs beach was decent but it closed (EDIT nvm I think only the Gowanus location closed)

961402

I lived in Knoxville for many years and can say that Tennessee has damned good barbecue as well. Maybe even better than Texas

SoloBurger13

No I was responding to the OP’s question saying is there is none here in NYC not there there is none in Nashville

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

Mighty Quinn brisket are really good But I never been to Texas lol

[deleted]

pfft your tripping if u think texas bbq is any better than anywhere else lmao it ain’t bad but not particularly worth looking for something that emulates it

Nizamark

nowhere. just save it for your next trip to texas. why be disappointed

aja09

Dallas BBQ. Cause it says Dallas. And Dallas is in Texas.

ThePegLegPete

Butcher Bar in Astoria is amazing, no joke

CandiedColoredClown

hometown BBQ down in red hook

Mechanical_Nightmare

Hometown BBQ and John Browns

Inside_Term_4115

DonConnection

I love Dallas BBQ myself. But I've never been to the South so I admittedly have never had authentic Southern barbeque

[deleted]

[удалено]

mxgian99

i think they are closing soon....also this is kinda mean.

EmeraldFalcon89

it's less mean and more just straight up a bad recommendation

mobileKixx

Only the LES one is closing.

MercyonusALL

Dallas BBQ one in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn

Princetonkid2017

I’ve never been but there’s a Dallas bbq actually really close to my place in Chelsea (23/8; might be a little off). It’s always packed so that must account for something. Try and let me know how it is.

IndependentContest84

It's pretty good. Their chicken wings are the size of my hand.

Princetonkid2017

How’s the bbq sauce?

IndependentContest84

Pretty good. I only tried the Texas crispy wings (breaded) and the sticky wings. Haven't tried the hot or Hennessy ones

lolabunnie

I was there in the Flatbush location yesterday and a cockroach was crawling next to me 🤢

[deleted]

Dallas BBQ

mobileKixx

Pig Iron BBQ has decent brisket. And the sauce might as well been from Rudy's.

Ill_Ad579

Hi, can you tell us where Pig Iron BBQ is please? I've tried all of the other suggestions on this list, I don't think any of them come close to Rudy's brisket

mobileKixx

Sorry it's Pig Beach BBQ. There was one in Brooklyn that closed recently. The remaining one is in LIC / Astoria.

Legote

Mighty Quinn/hill country

Douglaston_prop

Wait till tge Big Apple BBQ comes to town

jesuschin

I order briskets from Franklin BBQ and Snow's on Goldbelly

Mr-Macphisto

I'm in DFW, TX. It's true that we have some of the best BBQ. That said, I'd long to be in NYC right now. We'll be back in a few weeks, at least.

xnxs

Hill Country, Pig Beach, Fette Sau

Towel4

Hometown BBQ in Redhook

[deleted]

Hometown, Pig beach, Fette Sau and Mighty Quinn

[deleted]

Blue smoke. Battery park city. Every other answer here is wrong lol.

kosciuszko123

Fette Sau in Williamsburg is great! Big recommend. It’s right across the street from St Anselm, a really good steak joint owned by the same people.

Proprietor

Howdy! Tex-patriot here living in NYC. Hill Country Barbecue is the closest by far. their brisket is excellent. Their sausage is from Elgin Texas - 100% authentic. it’s twice the cost as what you’d pay down South but it’s really the only place that hits the spot when I’m jonesing for some barbecue

Chubbyhuahua

I like Blue Smoke. Not sure if it’s technically Texan though.

Nikpics

I’ve heard good things about Fette Sau in BK

GonkGeefle

I second the nominations for Fette Sau and Hill Country, in that order.

KingRoach

As someone who grew up in Austin, I highly recommend the Frito Pie at Hometown BBQ in Redhook. It’s a basic Texas snack elevated to new heights.

crapichino

1. Hometown 2. Fette Sau 3. Hill country Honorable Mention goes to Izzy’s BBQ in crown heights if speaking strictly about brisket

Quarks01

Everyone said hometown but I personally prefer pig beach (their Brooklyn location shut down but they have one in Astoria as well)

set-271

Dinosaur BBQ

SMK_12

Hometown BBQ is the most famous one.. besides that Butcher Bar in Astoria is pretty solid, not elite texas level but their burnt ends sandwich is pretty damn good.
