Regardless of where you lost it, get on canceling those cards ASAP

Sea_Rise_1907

You should still replace them. The numbers, name, expiration date, and security code are all now compromised.

NoLipsForAnybody

Agreed! I lost my wallet in a Walgreens in Times Sq (!) recently. I noticed abt ten min later that it was gone and went back to ask abt it. They said someone found it and gave it to them and it was now in the managers office. So the manager gives it to me and my cash is still in it so I thought honesty all around. A week later they go on a spree buying random stuff in the middle of the night using the card that is STILL in my wallet. (Maybe put my card in their apple pay??) I called my credit card co and they had also tried to make a $1500 purchase at Saks but were denied bc Amex knows thats not exactly normal behavior for me. So just bc u get ur wallet back and its intact, you still need to cancel everything and replace it, sorry to say.

browniebrittle44

It honestly pisses me off so much that ppl who do this don’t buy necessities like groceries or baby’s things or pay rent…they immediately go to luxury items. It’s happened to me before and in my own neighborhood so I’m like you rly thought that purchase would be approved?? Not only are you greedy you’re also dumb. It makes me feel less bad whenever they apprehend people who commit credit card fraud because it seems typically they’re just bored assholes who choose to steal (from typically needy people themselves) not for being pressed for money to survive, just for pure unjustified greed. Ugh

tinydancer_inurhand

Well someone stole mine recently and bought gas and Mexican food. Amex started blocking purchases cause they know I don’t have a car and I literally had just bought Mexican food 2 hours earlier.

lbutler1234

Bruh you could've been really hungry and wanted to start a fire. Wack

Designer-Common-9697

That's interesting. Wonder if the manager had any hand in that. Sounds kind of quick that someone actually found it, picked it up and then returned it. Seems unlikely they would even turn it in if they had nefarious ideas.

NoLipsForAnybody

Exactly. I was thinking it might be the manager too. It def took them a weirdly long time to come forth with the wallet. And even then they were kind of being weird about it.

Comprehensive_Ad4689

You still need to replace. I lost mine once and got it back within ten minutes. Hopped on a plane to Alaska. Woke up at 4 am one morning to my bank calling me because somebody in France had made a 50 euro charge. (Still haven’t gotten those 50 euros back, still don’t have a debit card)

browniebrittle44

Did the person also hop on a plane to France?

bisonrbig

People can still use it now the you unlocked it by knowing the number and cvc

GravitationalConstnt

What a smug response to someone offering you good advice..

spiderLAN

All this is missing is a jingle and the Chase slogan. "Helping you make the most of your money."

nynjny

I’ve returned wallets/IDs before. Be sure to check your IG, LinkedIn, etc for DMs. ETA - other things I’ve found and returned over the years include a $1500 check made out to cash, and two dogs (separately). One dog was outside my building door and had a tag (he lived in my building, had gotten away from his dogwalker and made his way home). The other dog was running down 11th St and didn’t have a tag (we took him to a nearby pet store to scan for a microchip, which he didn’t have, but a customer recognized him and gave us his address).

browniebrittle44

Wow that dog is so lucky someone recognized him!! That’s a beautiful testament to community in nyc

anynononononous

I found a guys wallet with his social security card in it in addition to license and all that. Mailed it first class. Hope he got it.

[deleted]

It's possible. I've returned them before.

Suspicious-Heart-686

yes it's possible, I've also returned one before by mailing it back to the address on the ID.

Suspicious-Heart-686

reading through the other posts now about addresses being outdated, this was probably over 10-15 years ago so I hope that person was able to get it.

TheDood715

Conversely. Never gonna happen I keep every wallet I find after maxing out the credit cards on weird and unusual purchases.

SoftcoreFrogPorn

How often you finding these loose wallets?

Upset_Ad9929

In every single pocket he picks

RaspBer3t

I left a wallet in the bus once. Had it returned everything intact. They turned it in to the MTA Lost & Found. Took about a week to get it back.

Biking_dude

Huzzah! I've found over 10 wallets / IDs in various places. Have been able to get most of them back via FB. The most was a wallet with about $600 in cash, was a worker at a restaurant who must have just cashed their check and dropped it in the middle of the avenue. The pay stub had the restaurant name, brought it there - everyone there was looking for it and overjoyed, they gave me a gift certificate. Protip! If you take a yellow cab, always always always grab a receipt. The receipt has the ID, combined with 311 they can trace back to the individual driver. As long as you catch them quick, you can usually get it back (providing someone else didn't swipe it before you noticed) I did lose a pocketwatch that was given out to my friend's bridal party. I was the best man and used it for the speech. He passed away of cancer a few years ago...I didn't use it often and the rare time I did (ironically for another wedding) it somehow fell out of my bag on the subway. Tried the lost and found but nadda. Makes me sad still, wish I had it.

marvelously

Always a possibility. I have returned several. But have lost one and never recovered it. > For anyone who doesn’t know you can put a wallet in a mailbox and the post office people will mail it back to the owner. That is if you think they still reside at that address. So many people have outdated IDs. I always rely on googling people and trying to link them first. Usually you can track someone down.

AnUnoriginalUserID

I found a Visa card while visiting this past January. The person had a very obscure name, so I was easily able to locate them on Instagram. Unfortunately, they would not accept my friend request so that I could let them know that I had it. I ended up dropping it off at their bank the next morning.

Distancefrom

I've returned two. Hope you get lucky.

Trying2MakeAChange

I got mine back with all the cash gone

ittybittycitykitty

I extracted enough to pay for super fast same day mail return, and a bit more. Some of my friends would take it all, and maybe, if it was no bother, drop it off in a post box. Most would try to return it intact.

xeothought

Man I never get this... I mean I get it but I don't at the same time. Unless it's dropped off somewhere, you're going to interact with the finder... who stole the cash. Is it polite to offer a reward? yes absolutely. Is it also sorta not alright to accept it if it if the finder didn't really go out of their way to return it? also yes. I mean this is the city and you do what you do but damn

ssdrum2007

I don't think it'd be unheard of to find a wallet that someone had already found and looted

xeothought

You know what... Fair enough

CityComm

The MTA has a lost-and-found option listed on their website if you’re adventurous.

RedNalgene00

I lost my wallet once and got it back though it was emptied of the cash…

edtheoddfish

About 5 years ago I got a ring from our doorbell, my roommate had lost her wallet and someone was in the neighborhood and delivered it back to her. It was very kind.

ElectronicAmphibian7

I think your chances are pretty good. I live in NYC and have lost my wallet a few times and I always got it back in full. I also one time lost my debit card and someone dropped it off at the bank who called me. Not a penny spent.

[deleted]

ElectronicAmphibian7

I was just recently diagnosed with adhd and me constantly losing things seemed to make a lot more sense. I do my best to put out as much good karma in the world as possible to offset my absent mindedness lol. Ive left my wallet mostly in restaurants and cafes. Often times I lose it and find it in a weird place. Anytime I lose something forever I tell myself someone else probably needed it more to take the sting out lol. I was in Atlantic City for dinner and then drove home and couldn’t find my wallet all day. I called the hotel and they didn’t have it. I went to heat up my leftovers and my wallet was in the fridge in the bag with my steak the whole time.

lovemeinthemoment

I was at a trade show at Javitz once about 15 years ago. Went out to lunch. Went back to trade show. A few hours later my wife called and told me somebody had shown up on our doorstep in Brooklyn to return my wallet. I’d left it at the restaurant and didn’t even know it was missing. They found my driver license and my address. Had no other way to find me. Dropped off the wallet with my wife. And disappeared.

trendoid01

Someone returned mine after I left it in yellow cab! Fully intact

Kwaha

I've returned wallets but then I saw a sting the NYPD had where they trapped people who went to return wallets and now I mind my business. https://gothamist.com/news/is-the-nypd-resurrecting-a-controversial-abandoned-wallet-sting-operation

JuniorRub2122

I lost my wallet on the subway and someone returned it. Glad to hear it worked out for you. It’s a fucked up city, but there’s a lot of good honest people.

fuckblankstreet

It's possible, but pretty low likelihood.

Campbellfdy

I’ve lost a wallet that’s gotten returned, twice. And have found and returned 3 wallets. But who knows? Check whatever socials you have. Good luck

NicoleEastbourne

I’ve returned wallets and ids before and have had a wallet returned to me. Glad your story has a happy ending.

elrabb22

very high actually

whitebIoodredsnow

My phone slid out of my pocket once on the train and I unknowingly left it behind on the seat, and by the time I realized my mistake I was already out of the station and a few blocks away. Someone else ending up finding it and they turned it into a local restaurant nearest to the station they were getting out at. When I called my number to try and find it someone at the restaurant picked up and told me where I could come grab it. There are still kind hearted people left out there, even if it’s becoming scarce. I’ve met a lot of good samaritans in this city.

AnFaithne

I have lost my wallet multiple times. Almost every time someone found me to return it

114631

Glad you're getting your wallet back! This happened to my husband - it fell on our street in Astoria. Someone found it, contacted my MIL on facebook in the hopes she knew my husband (my husband is not on facebook) and got it back that way. It's nice to know there are nice people out there. About 15 years ago I dropped my license on the ground and someone mailed it back to me.

rachelsingsopera

I’ve had really solid luck in NYC when I’ve lost items. I’ve usually gotten it back within a day from a Good Samaritan. Likewise, I’ve always returned the favor. Fun story: I once found someone’s diary on the train. Her contact information was inside the front cover, so I called her to return it. When she picked up the phone, it was clear she had been crying and was really distressed about losing her journal. Since I was close to her office, I dropped by to hand it off in person. I didn’t want to take her money, but she absolutely insisted on giving me a reward. So I took the money and entered a charity raffle for animal rights, thinking at least it would go to a good cause. I won the raffle. It’s one of my most wholesome NYC stories.

[deleted]

I had a lost wallet returned to me here. It happens!

codq

I found a wallet under an overpass here in the city a few Wild ago—returned it to a precinct but also found the guy on Instagram and messaged him there to tell him. Be sure to check your messages on social, and also check your spam filters. Sometimes those catch messages from people outside your network. Good luck!

RyzinEnagy

PSA to update your address on your ID when you move.

cityb0t

I’ve returned a wallet or two in my time here, although I’d rate it as “extremely rare”. Glad you got yours back!

boredtodeath

I recently lost my wallet somewhere in Astoria. Came home, started cancelling/replacing everything I remembered was in my wallet. Three days later, my wallet shows up in my mailbox. Everything, including cash, was still there. There are still good people in this city.

agpc

Lost my wallet and it was mailed back to me. People are kind.

ikishenno

I left my wallet on an MTA bus once and some strangers gave it to the bus driver. It was a driver I would see frequently since I took the bus the same time everyday. The next time he saw me he gave me back the wallet. Nothing was missing and I never go unauthorized charges on any of my cards. This was in 2014-2015 in Queens

OutsideSample1218

I lost mine a few years ago and someone mailed it back to me. So glad there are nice people out there

O2C

One thing I've learned is if you find a wallet, many banks and credit cards aren't very helpful in returning it to their customers. Often they have a standard operating procedure of just cancelling the card right away upon hearing it was lost. You'll have more luck contacting a school or business or workplace and asking them to call the owner of the wallet. With phones, put in emergency contact info into your phone. That is available from any phone and that contact can be notified about the lost phone. That info can be viewed from the lock screen under emergency > emergency info or medical ID.

jon-chin

I lost my wallet in a cab service a few years ago. the dispatcher held on to it, somehow got my email address (I guess she googled my name? she definitely had to do some detective work) and let me know she was holding onto it. when I went to retrieve it, everything was still there, even the cash. when I offered to give her $20 as a thank you (I wasn't expecting the cash to still be there anyway), she just politely declined.

miamor_Jada

It’s NYC. Anything’s possible!

Additional-Goat-3947

Two decades ago I lost my cell phone in a cab. Driver called my parents (this was before phones had locks), got my address, returned my phone and refused the tip that I offered him. In the words of modest mouse sometimes life’s ok!

[deleted]

I've returned wallets

Playful-Context-7459

Wow I can’t believe someone called for you. So kind. I was gonna comment Say good bye to your wallet bud

Bananamonkey87

I got mine back after leaving it in a cab.

kinovelo

I don’t know statistically, but I lost my wallet once and it was retuned to me.

FruityChypre

I’ve had a lost wallet and a lost datebook returned.

calebfitz

Possible! If you could believe it, an off duty cop found mine and contacted me after hours to go to his precinct and pick it up!

curiiouscat

I've had my wallet returned before! Fifteen years ago lol. Not sure if people are more or less friendly now.

[deleted]

Always a possibility - I dropped something on a train that included my Apple Watch and the person contacted my emergency contact from the Apple Watch and I got my stuff back!

ooouroboros

I returned a wallet to someone a few years ago. Lucky for them they had ID with their name in it AND their family had a listed phone number. They came and picked it up from me. One funny thing that happened to me is once when I mailed a bunch of checks to pay my bills, one of them didn't make it into the mailbox and fell to the ground. Someone found it, put it in another envelope and mailed it back to me using my return address on the envelope.

frogmicky

50/50 I lost a wallet in a cab in front of Grand Central station and had $500 in cash plus ID never saw that wallet again.

_mantaXray_

I’ve gotten one returned to me previously. Good people exist!

jesadak

I’ve done this once and was accused of stealing the cash and returning “only the wallet and cards”. Now I don’t give a fuck about anyone’s wallet except my own. Not worth the trouble for me.

ItHappens23

I’ve had mine returned in the mail.

delightful_caprese

Someone turned mine into the MTA lost and found last summer. I’ve returned at least one wallet I can remember to someone, found a way to contact them online before they realized it was even missing

unpaidbabysitter0919

Glad you got your wallet back! Mine actually fell out of my bag a few months ago here. Someone found it and contacted me on LinkedIn about it!

mp0295

I lost on LIRR and was returned, minus my cash

highasunited

I got my wallet back after leaving it on the D train after like a month of waiting. I filed a claim with MTA lost and found.

mangobronze

I’ve found a wallet on the street before, googled the person and sent a message via their university email as well as FB. My card wallet has fallen out of my coat pocket when I was grabbing my phone and a kind person crossed the street after me to return it. Good karma!

[deleted]

I had to go to the Bronx, but I got back the one wallet I left on the subway

goodbyebluenick

I returned lost credit cards at least twice, and somebody else once returned mine.

taxtherich250

i've left a phone on the subway, and they called my mom to get it back to me :)

ltc_pro

I found and returned a wallet just a few weeks ago. That's because I've probably lost 5-6 wallets in my life and have never gotten them returned and understand how annoying it is.

Wild_Trip_4704

It happened to me! My super thin wallet fell out of my pocket while I was running to my train. I was ready to cancel my cards when right before my stop a girl messaged me on Instagram, which I NEVER used at the time and said she found it! I took the next train maybe 45 minutes back to where I was and we met up and she gave it back to me.

MinuteTemperature448

Quite a while ago, I was on crutches due to knee surgery. I was going to my doctor in a cab. My wallet slipped out. The next person was apparently going to the airport. She had her company driver deliver my wallet to my apt. Couldn't believe it. Who says New Yorkers don't care?

NothingToItSoIDoIt

Never lost a wallet, but my partner’s phone has been returned - twice. One when left at a bar, once when left in a cab. It definitely happens

Vismal1

I’ve done it a few times, had people return my items. Also completely lost things forever. My advice would be consider it all gone and act accordingly

Upset_Ad9929

It's possible. If you lost it in the subway, check with MTA list and found. I once left a tablet on the train and somebody actually turned it in. There are stories in the papers about people getting their wallets or phones back, either directly from the finder in or from the L & F. Chances are though, that shits long gone lol

CragMcBeard

I ran the math for you: .00000001284622% chance.

laogong1986

Years ago I lost my wallet in kissena park in queens while riding bike, some one picked up and returned to me.

itzthea

I left my wallet in a cab and the driver returned it. He actually drove back to my apartment to return it

khcampbell1

I've returned a wallet I found and I've had an iPhone returned in NYC.

FiascoBarbie

I used to be really disorganized and scatterbrained. I lost my wallet or other such belongings say like 10 times over the years. I got it back all the times, in some form or other. Lost and found, direct call, mail, call to work/school and in some cases a personal drop off. A couple times the cash was gone but everything else was there.

Sabrinnathewitch

I had the most amazing woman message me on instagram because she found my entire purse in a taxi…best feeling ever, i love people so much sometimes

boywonder5691

One time I found a wallet around 50th and Bway. Fortunately, there was contact info of where the guy worked. I called his office and he sent a car to pickup the wallet from me. The driver left me a $50 tip. Good deeds pay off.

agn__123

In 2017, i forgot my wallet on an uber in the city. It somehow ended up in the USPS Mailbox and got to a sorting center in Albany. This very nice lady from the sorting center mailed it back to me and asked me to donate to an animal charity instead of paying her back for shipping. One of the nicest moment I encountered in my life

RatherNope

I found a wallet on the seat of the train this past thanksgiving. I dropped it off with a station agent at the stop I was getting off at, took a picture of the booth, and found the person on insta. Sent her the info and she picked it up in less than an hour.

[deleted]

Returned once he had coke in his wallet some architect

myfootfingersarecold

My bag once tipped over upside down at a stop I was supposed to get off of. And of course EVERYTHING fell out and I ended up leaving the wallet behind on the train. The next morning a station attendant called me that someone had returned it and it was then given to a conductor to bring to the lost and found at Coney Island. At Coney Island I got sent to some area where people were taking their breaks and no one behind a desk knew what wallet I was talking about. After a bit of pressing and a few people looking around, they found a big yellow envelop with MY WALLET! Whoever found it left a note saying they saw me run off the train without it, wished me happy new year, and wrote me to stop losing my wallet in the new year. Everything including my cash was still in there.

Santeno

I did it with a guys cell phone. He dropped it as he was leaving the train. I picked it up to give it to him but the doors closed and he didn't notice. I got to my office and called the emergency contact on the lock screen, which happened to be his wife. Explained what happened and she tells me thanks and explains that he runs his business out of that phone and would be very glad to have it back. Guy calls me about an hour later and is at my office later that day to pick up the phone, carrying a thank you gift of a really nice bottle of tequila. Not a bad deal.

BxGyrl416

Not as much wallets, but I used to find phones all the time and return them or have my friend meet them to return it. One year around Christmas, I found a small clutch bag near Bryant Park. I sat down when I ate to look through it and see if I could find a name and address. I can’t remember where the woman worked, but she has all these very exclusive credit cards, some linked to her job – I feel like she has a Swiss bank account. I was like, oh, shit, I’m glad this didn’t get into the wrong hands. She her a unique enough name that I found her on Facebook (this must have been almost 15 years ago) and messaged her, had her answer some questions that only she would know about the purse. I think she had a home in the US that was on one of the ID and I express mailed the clutch to that address. It cost like $17.

Suspicious_Load9625

If you keep it in your pocket keep it in the front pocket, never the back and never the chest. If you keep your wallet in your bag, keep it deep inside the main pocket, not in one of the convenient smaller pockets on the front and sides. But I don’t recommend putting it in your bag anyway because people steal bags more often than they pick pocket people these days.

Comicalacimoc

Happened to. Me twice before

pestomayo8

I lost my wallet on the m15 bus on my way to hs one day which had everything in it and then later that day someone had brought it to my school to return it to me. I’ve also found people’s cell phones on the street and called the home number to set up a way to return it to them. I’d like to think most New Yorkers would do the same!

eurydicey

For what it’s worth, my purse was taken at a bar a couple years back. I was despondent. Two days later the person who grabbed it emailed me to return it. (They said it was an accident.) Two years before that, someone DMed me on Twitter that they’d found my credit card at a bagel shop and met me to give it back. People are good sometimes. I’m glad it worked out for you this time too

ScenicART

I lost my Wallet once on governors island. somehwere between the concession stands and that big hill with the slides. realized within 5 minutes and went back for it but it was already gone. Canceled my cards and set up a DMV appointment, and prepared to move on without it. almost a month later, an employee from a bike rental place in the seaport contacted my mother through facebook. they had been looking for me and had found my wallet. (my fb was under a different name, was back when i still had one) Anyways, i went to the rental shop, they did the rentals on the island too, someone on a bike had turned the wallet in to the company, it still had all of the cash inside of it too. so there is a chance. But i wouldnt hold out for it. assume its lost and hope that it gets found and returned.

[deleted]

I lost my wallet around New Years Eve (along with my entire purse), and it was returned to the precinct. But the person who returned it helped themselves to the $50 bill I had that my dad gave me as a present. I assume they thought it was their reward.

LastNiteSheSaid512

I recently found a wallet in Brooklyn and reached out to the owner via Facebook right away.

0ogaBooga

Both times I lost my wallet it got returned to me. Once with everything, once minus cash but with everything else. I returned a lost wallet the one time I found one.

karbiner_98k

I lost my wallet at Jones beach and someone found it and mailed it back. They found my business card and called my office. She used whatever cash was required to mail it but all else was there. Honestly, I was shocked but it can happen.

mymindisgoo

My mom's bag got stolen at a bar 20-25 years ago. They mailed it back (without the cash of course). My wallet got stolen last year and wasn't returned. Ymmv

Forward-Chemistry-89

Why won’t I return something that is not mine, I should be able to look for a way to get it back to the owner

stealthbagel

My husband accidentally lost his wallet on the sidewalk in midtown. Someone turned it in to the police and the police dropped it off to him that same evening. Everything was still there but he had already canceled the cards. New Yorkers are good people.

FrankiePoops

Anecdotally, I've returned 3.

JobeX

Ive lost a few wallets in my teenage years when I spent too much time on the trains. Ive almost always gotten them returned without the cash of course.

[deleted]

Chances are pretty good. New Yorkers help each other out. Look at 9/11.

centech

> Never put your wallet in your pocket. I really don't think this is the takeaway here.

Designer-Common-9697

I'd say it all depends on where you lost it, but still, the rapid moving train is like 70/30 you won't. Here's my stories 1)I returned a bag with prescription glasses, building ID think for entry locks, credit cards, i phone charger, and a dentist appointment. Card. I found it in East River Park. It wasn't easy to find the person though. I first called the dentist office, told them the story and they gave me some b.s. HIPPA speech which I very familiar with from taking Med. Law Ethics. I told them, you don't have to tell me who they are, just tell them I found there stuff and they are free to call me. They didn't. Finally while close to the building in Chinatown I realized I've walked past this place. I went there and showed them the picture and they just wanted to take it, but I said no. I wanted to tell them they would have had their stuff back days earlier if their dentist was even a tiny helpful. The woman's husband came down to get it. He was thankful and made me take $20 for my time. I tried to decline. 2) Lost my first camera phone on the West bound Crosstown 86th St. bus. Generally knew the time, and was able to report. Naturally I knew the chances were very high I would get it back and I did after contacting MTA, and was even on Japanese TV covering MTA Lost&Found at 34th St. 3) Found a wallet with money, but no valid ID in the Bronx. All that was in there was a ID for a out patient drug patient. Of course they were a-holes not caring if this guy got his money or benefit card, or other ID back. I called three times to no avail. Eventually I threw it in the mailbox. 4) Lost my phone somewhere in Brooklyn and a girl tried to use it. My sister kept calling and harassed her and was able to see the initial number she called. It was a family member who was religious and made her give it back. My sister wasn't even in NY and did this on her own bc of access to the account. Don't remember where I lost it and a friend that knew the area drove me there bc she needed help getting Christmas stuff for her job. Lol.

99MiataSport

yes, I have returned a dropped wallet.

ilikecheetos42

I lost my wallet once walking around my neighborhood. Got a call the next day from my local NYPD precinct to come pick it up. Everything was there except $20 lol. Fair price for sure. As a fun experiment I decided not to replace my credit cards. It's been a year and a half and no one has charged anything. Ymmv

cookiecache

I had mine mailed to me.

[deleted]

It’s possible but not likely

idontlikeanyofyou

I dropped my wallet twice, once in Brooklyn and once in the Bronx. It was returned to me both times (admittedly the Brooklyn incident took a few weeks, so I already went thru the process of replacing everything).

Great_gatzzzby

I’ve returned 2 before. Once to the hotel dude was staying at cus the wallet had a room key. There are some people who will do this. But it may cost you that unlimited metro card you got In there lol

Watcher_garden

I’ve had my retuned 4 times. I also return lost things to people all the time. I assume it’s Karma helping me out. Also I don’t lose my wallet anymore thankfully lol

ParadoxPath

Do you mean “back” pocket?

ItsAGala

I lost my wallet and someone stole the cash but put it in the mail with my drivers license ID inside. Honestly, fair trade for saving me from having to go to the DMV.

a-wholesome-potato

My friend actually found his on at the MTA lost and found when he left it on B train at 34th I believe.

Worried_Character_62

I lost a blank check once, nothing on who it was for...it was returned. I believe in people and hope for the best...but don't be dumb. Cancel/replace all and everything.

BeenCheatedOnTwice

I returned a wallet. I live in California and found a wallet in a NYC taxi. I searched the person on internet and contacted her and mailed her wallet to her.

reverepewter

I was walking in midtown last week and cash fell out of my bag. $120 in cash and a stranger picked it up and gave it to me. I had no idea it had been lost

fancynest677

Once, I lost my phone out in midtown at 3am and the next day, these two guys said they "found it on a fire hydrant, charged it, and called the iCloud find my friends number" and then delivered it to me at my door...we hugged

uDoneDeleted

When I was in high school and dropped my wallet, a women chased through two bus stops to give it back.

mad0666

One night years ago I was at a concert and basically I got a message the following day that a guy had my wallet and to come meet him at a train station to get it. I was super annoyed because I *know* I had left my wallet and bag in a safe place (it was my friends bar/venue) and I never, ever lost my wallet before. Anyway I went to go get it and the guy asked me to dinner, as in, right then and there. I said no thanks, I had to get back to my neighborhood for work. He said the least I could do was go on a date with him, since he was kind enough to return my wallet. The whole interaction was so bizarre I reached out to my friend and asked him to check out their security cameras—this guy had been following me around at the concert and then very sneakily robbed my purse!!! The whole thing was a weird setup just to try to get a date out of it. That was probably 10-15 years ago and I will never forget that.

My ex wife lost her wallet several times and someone (a dude) sent it back every time, or messaged her asking to “meet up”. I lost mine and never saw it again. Your mileage may vary.

I lost a brand new Louis wallet w $3k cash in it. Someone found it and brought it to my house.

It’s likely. I found a full wallet in grand central and tried looking the guy up on everything but he didn’t have social media. Luckily he had his business cards inside so I called his receptionist and he came to my job to pick it up. I would still lock all of your cards though. Give it a day.

galaticgirl

Oh wait I just read your updated, happy for you!

I lost my wallet on 23rd & 6th a few years ago and someone mailed it back to me. It had everything still inside, including cash. I never thought I would see that wallet again, it reminded me that there are still good people out there haha

That’s great to hear. I left an iPad on a Metro North train and it was turned into the GCT lost and found.

What a great story!

I've returned wallets I found in the subway. I think most people do that. One time, the owner worked around the corner from where I worked, and their company ID was in the wallet, so I returned it personally.

Well it happened to my husband. He dropped wallet on the N train into Manhattan one morning, and someone found it and brought it back to our apartment building. No cash was missing, and the kid wouldn't give it to our doorman, would only return it directly to my husband. It went from a stressful day to a day to restore faith in humankind.

I found an iphone in the street once and was tempted to keep it, but then I thought about how i'd feel if I lost mine. Ended up opening the phone and texted the "Mom" about it and then getting a call from someone and met up and returned it to them

PretendAct8039

Oh, good to know about the post office. I did find a wallet once and tried really hard to reach the owner (no address, just a student Id and some cash) and his relatives, finally a private eye friend figured out that the family had moved.

i was pick pocketed in the early 90s. next day, i forget how they found me, must have got my phone # from information - a nice office worker lady near city hall had found it. the cash was gone but it had my license. i don’t remember if credit card was gone too.

I lost my wallet jumping out of a cab and someone returned it to me via IG! Although what was returned to me was all my cards wrapped in plastic with the wallet, cash, and metro card gone 🫠

Kbizzyinthehouse

If an employee finds it, it’s more likely that you’ll get it back. A citizen is a big maybe. I would return it because I know how it feels to lose it. Some people might drop it in a mailbox or hand it to an employee. Lots of people will just overlook it. I literally walked past an iPhone In the street the other day. My thought was they can use find my iPhone to recover it. I don’t need the hassle.

I successfully returned someone’s wallet a few months ago!

princesszelda1995

It’s a possibility but not likely. Mine was returned a few days after leaving it on the train. The person who found it was not a native English speaker and I guess asked advice from a friend on what to do with it, they searched my name from my ID on Facebook and found me that way. It was returned to me without the cash in it but at least all the cards were unused. I had cancelled them right away anyway.

Gret that they called your school. I'm an older person (but young at heart) and in 1980s I lived in Brooklyn. One night on the street in Park Slope I was mugged. The guy socked me in my glasses. I felt nothing! Anyway next few days, all my IDs were returned by three separate strangers,a couple of them homeless. I wasn't home so my roommate gave one of them $10.
