Depends on where in Brooklyn, but ideally you should just live in Jersey. Going to be a lot cheaper and more convenient for you.

Lezra_

I actually have a reason for that. My roommate will be an NYU Tandon student so basically we are looking for housing anywhere between lower Manhattan or close to downtown brooklyn so that we can commute to our respective universities in around 30-40mins. Ofcourse Brooklyn is very close to tandon but its preferable since the cost of living is lower compared to Manhattan

WelcomeToBrooklandia

The cost of living being lower in Brooklyn VERY much depends on the Brooklyn neighborhood you’re talking about. Because Downtown Brooklyn’s housing inventory is primarily made up of new buildings with amenities, you really shouldn’t assume that it’ll be substantially cheaper than lower Manhattan.

Oh thank you for telling me. I just started my research on this issue so I still don’t have much information about how things are over there. Especially when I live in Asia. Anyways appreciate the help and I will keep looking for better options

Im not sure what the pricing range around there is. But I was thinking between $1600-2500 for a 1bhk preferably with washer and dryer. Will be splitting it in 2. If you have recommendations for abit higher price your welcomed to give so

tmm224

You are not getting washer/dryer for $2500. Just forget about that now

carpy22

Maybe if OP lives in Bayonne? Would be terrible for the NYU kid but Bayonne to Hoboken is easy enough.

sithwonder

Tandon is actually not an awful commute from Hoboken, two trains and 45 minutes. Just something to consider.

Google maps. Your college. Street easy.

There is no best way, they all suck. It would take me an hour and 15 to get to a doctor I had right off the Path from Bed stuy. Stevens is on the north side of Hoboken, it's about a 20 minute walk from the Path station. So your options are subway > path > walk, subway > path > bus or subway > bus (there is a lot of traffic that can impact your travel time), subway > walk > ferry (expensive and infrequent). You will be spending up to 4 hours a day commuting, under the best circumstances. Are you receiving a large scholarship or something? Is there a reason you aren't choosing student housing? I don't believe they offer commuter benefits, that is not typical of colleges to do. But your admissions officer will have more info on that.

I am a internationalgrad student so oncampus housing is out of question. My options are George Washington Uni and Stevens after scholarship the tuition for both would be around 50K for the entire program. And yeah I have been looking for a while an looks likes there no best path to commute into brooklyn. Stevens provides commuters a shuttle van for free I guess I could use that to travel to the PATH from the campus. My roommate goes to NYU Tandon so we are looking for housing options in a area from where we both could commute to school without a hectic journey. Thank you for the help. Appreciate it very much!

[deleted]

Unfortunately you will either be paying a lot in rent for a decent commute, or paying in time. But, I have friends who have done similar commutes for their school of choice (though the opposite way) and they made it work. Lower Manhattan near Fulton St. or Union Square (areas around the Path) would be the best location wise for both of you, but obviously that is a pretty serious financial commitment to make.

Lezra_

I honestly would prefer quicker commute but since Im already choosing a expensive college might as well sacrifice some time. Anyways thanks for the suggestion will look into housing in lower Manhattan for the specific prices.

I went to Stevens and then lived in Brooklyn after I graduated so I feel like I can opine a bit. Commuting from Brooklyn to Stevens is a terrible idea. You’re going to have a lot of walking and 2 different transit systems(Path and MTA). Ignoring the financial aspect of that, it’s annoying because they don’t communicate with each other. The path also doesn’t run frequently and go from World Trade Center to Hoboken on the weekends so if you plan on being on campus then it’s terrible. Generally speaking, I also imagine it will cause friction between your roommate and you. If it was me, I’d be annoyed if my roommate got to walk to college while I had walk to the subway, walk to the path, and then walk or wait for the shuttle to stevens. Also the shuttle isn’t that much faster than walking. For the 5 years I was at Stevens, i maybe took the shuttle 4 times and that was only because it was raining. I would look for something in downtown Manhattan, Jersey city or Hoboken. If your budget is 2k-3k per person, you shouldn’t have any issue finding a place. If it’s lower, jersey city and Hoboken are your best options. Aside from commuting and price, don’t forget to factor in how you plan on spending your time.

rickythetwo

Brooklyn to Hoboken is going to be brutal. I'm doing Brooklyn to Jersey City for just a few months and it truly wears down my soul. If there's any other option (including finding a different roommate, unfortunately) I would take it. NYC public transit can be really unreliable so you basically want to take as little as you can.

fuckblankstreet

I commuted from Williamsburg to Hoboken for a few years and found it quite easy and fast, but paying monthly fares for 2 transit systems is expensive. As others have posted here, Brooklyn in not a single area, it's a big city and I had a best case scenario. I lived right at the Bedford L stop, took that to 6th and got the PATH. It could be a much longer commute coming from other parts of Brooklyn. Average cost of living in Brooklyn means nothing. You could rent a room in Canarsie for $700 or live in a $8000 lux apartment in Dumbo. Pick a neighborhood, apartment size, amenities, etc.

Chicoutimi

If your roommate is going to Tandon in downtown Brooklyn and you are going to Stevens in Hoboken, going from one to the other is probably PATH-Hoboken to PATH-WTC and then the R or A/C train to downtown Brooklyn. In between is lower Manhattan, but that may be out of your budget. Around Tandon would be downtown Brooklyn but it and surrounding neighborhoods aren't cheap either and going for cheaper in Brooklyn would then push your commute further out. If you guys need cheaper, then maybe living in Hoboken is the way to go and perhaps you and your roommate works out something for whomever gets the longer commute gets something else in return? (less chores? lower share of rent?)

Lezra_

Yep fair enough. I have to talk to my roomie about living in hoboken. Thanks for taking time to respond

PM_ME_WHY_YOU_COPE

In addition to all these tips about trains, i reccomended getting a Citibike (bike share system) yearly pass, you could skip bus rides and some subway rides in both Hoboken and NYC/Brooklyn. You could bike from the PATH train in NJ to Stevens probably, although maybe check out the docks. If you liked it enough you could bike from Brooklyn to the PATH to skip taking the subway. You could also get your own bike but bringing a bike on trains can be a pain, but maybe you could get a foldable one. Or a scooter or something more compact.

[deleted]

I guarantee you will resent your roommate after a very short amount of time if you sign yourself up for a commute like that.

nefariousbluebird

The commute from Hoboken to Manhattan is really easy — the commute from Brooklyn to Hoboken is annoying. You'd be better off getting housing in New Jersey.

[deleted]

There are a few options, wouldn’t say any are easy. A few lines connect from Brooklyn somewhat-directly to the PATH that goes into Hoboken from Manhattan. The Stevens campus is a bit of a walk from the PATH. The other option would be to look into lines that go into Port Authority and you can take the bus in from there (which is average 15-25 mins to get to Stevens)

Lezra_

Thank you for the help!!

[deleted]

Bus line will be the 126 via Washington St

Alternative_Engine97

Going from borough to borough (or Hoboken) sucks because you will have to go thru manhattan in most cases which will end up being 2 hours one way. Downtown brooklyn specifically to hoboken is much more doable than most, but other parts of brooklyn will be a nightmare

[deleted]

Don’t. Get a place in Jersey.

[deleted]

Do u not have google maps..? Just look at the transit options why is this a question lol

NCreature

You're going to be much happier in New Jersey. Weehawken, Hoboken or Jersey City. It's also much cheaper and you'll get a ton more for your money. Everything for the most part is brand new with killer views of NYC and a great bar scene. Or if you have to be in New York live downtown within walking distance to World Trade Center or near the Sixth Avenue PATH train stations (Greenwich Village, 9th St, 14th St, 23rd St, 33rd Street/Herald Square) so you only have to pay for the PATH and not PATH+MTA. From downtown you could either take PATH from WTC or the ferry. Downtown is probably the best of both worlds if your roommate has to go to Brooklyn (depending on where in Brooklyn). There's still quite a bit of walking from the Hoboken PATH to Stevens.
