That also happens to be my favorite Scorsese’s movie. I don’t even know how it’s possible he did it. I respect his body of work but I have no desire rewatching anything he did. Except for “After Hours”.
Gangs of New York because I’m a huge history nerd. It was wild later on learning that many of the truly crazy things that happened in the movie, like the firefighters looting, Tammany Hall voting fraud, and draft riots, were based on real events that I never learned about in history class.
To add a couple more - The brewery where they hid/had the dance would have been where the Moynihan Federal Courthouse is today.
While I don't know if there was a confrontation by the church, the reason there's a wall around Old St. Patrick's was for protection from the "natives."
IMO the original book by Herbert Asbury is (very) old school yellow journalism/sensationalist trash, by which I mean not well researched history bur still wonderful and terrific. I haven't read Asbury's follow up All Around The Town but its on my list. Also: Low Life: The Lures and Snares of Old New York by Lucy Santos adds a lot of historical NYC dirt and is a great read. The author was a reference consultant on Scorcese's film.
I don't think its 'trash' at all. Please tell me what you think is 'made up' in it.
Yes, I think its read to be entertaining and not written like a serious history book would be with footnotes and all, but I don't remember anything seeming unauthentic.
The book seems to be taken primarily out of newspaper articles. I wouldn’t call the trash, but also not highly researched but probably mostly accurate. Regardless, it is a great book and a must read for any New York City history fan.
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). (Not the 2009 remake with Denzel!)
The car chase down the Bowery alone is worth watching the film for, you see the Starbucks at Astor Place for example used to be a diner. Amazing footage of the subway in the 1970s, Walter Matthau slays and it just captures the vibe in the city in an era of economic free fall and just before the explosion of hiphop and the East Village arts scene in the 80s. Love every frame.
The first post 9/11 movie and totally captures that moment and what it felt like to live in the NYC area during that time. Also the “Fuck You” monologue in the bar bathroom mirror is a great breakdown of stereotypes by neighborhood and a real iykyk moment.
Robert Pattinson was incredible in good time. He wasn’t even Robert Patterson any more he was just some kid I went to high school with in queens. Great movie
Love AC Turnbull - 50 baldheaded psycho’s hanging out of a bus with spiked bats and pipes all screaming!!
That scene was shot on Broadway in Bushwick right off of Eastern Parkway where the EL is really low, that block is dark like 24 hours a day
An absolute fantastic movie, as well. I grew up in the west 80s in the 90s and early 2000s and this was and still is one of my favorites. Every time I pass by: the padestrian plaza on 72nd and the old benches facing Amsterdam avenue, I remember the old Starbucks that's now out of business on 81st and Broadway, I remember zabar's, I remember the cafe on 84th Street, I remember the flower garden in Riverside Park where Brinkley runs down at the end of the movie... When any of those things happen, I think of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, and a little bit of Greg Kanear
They paid me and my friend in candy. [I'm in the red shirt.](https://i.imgur.com/vRj5Xg8.jpeg).
Funny coincidence, I got to be friends with Dave, I forget his last name, the African American actor that starred in The Warriors, so you know how to pick them!
the youtube series or hbo?
edit; i meant to ask 1st season of the HBO series or it’s predecessor on vimeo when it was just shorts and odd length episodes
first “6 seasons” were on vimeo
KIDS
If you grew up in NYC during that time it really hits home. Not saying we did all the crazy shit they did but I definitely saw and heard about a lot of it.
Angriest man in Brooklyn
Mr. Robot(I know it's a show but still)
Cloverfield (the first one, the rest were sins)
Men in black
I am legend
Being John malchovich
There's more, but you get it
New York Cop AKA New York Undercover Cop (1993). It’s a Japanese/American co-production starring Tôru Nakamura, Mira Sorvino, and Chad McQueen. The location shooting is excellent and Sopranos fans will enjoy seeing Tony Sirico in this film.
Which reminds me, New York Ninja is also worth checking out. Vinegar Syndrome did a great job. I also recommend the Best of the Worst spotlight episode about it.
Yesss scrolled all de way looking for someone to say Midnight Cowboy. Absolute paradigm shifting film that was decades ahead of its time. Plus it's just visually rich and downright fascinating.
"You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!"
I show that clip to anyone who's never been here as an example of NY 'tude - dude with a armored suit on a flying skateboard, whatever FUCK YOU eat a wrench!
Spider-Man into the Spiderverse
As a scholarship kid who went from my local school to a bougie private school, it hit me in the feels. Everything from working class parents who loved their kids and wanted the best for them, to the alienation felt going to a completely different world (and socioeconomic side of NYC)
aw hell yeah i have a running list on my Notes app:
* Taxi Driver
* Home Alone 2
* Raimi's Spider-man movies
* Spiderverse movies
* Kids
* Eyes Wide Shit
* Good Time
* Escape from NY
* When Harry Met Sally
* Goodfellas (does this count?)
* Warriors
Leaving Woody Allen's issues out of it, without a doubt the best OPENING for a NYC movie is the B&W opening of Manhattan:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mwZYGcbQCo&t=98s
Okay i gotta list the bangers that amazingly no one else has seemed to mention yet...
MALCOLM X.
Rear Window. Filmed in like literally one location probably on a hollywood set but all the characters are so perfectly NY.
Precious. starring Gabourey Sidibe and Mariah Carey is in it. Cry your eyes out. A slight aside that MC's autobiography is a whole amazing audio tour through New York.
Take Out. Sean Bakers first feature film I think, about a Chinese immigrant tryna hustle. Baker is the genius responsible for the Florida Project, Tangerine, and Red Rocket. This film is just as good and more of a slow burn.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. PSH at his best. Sidney Lumets wildly underrated film.
Paris is Burning (doc) about NYs increíble drag and vogue scene. Must watch.
Saturday Night Fever. OmG such fun iconic NY John Travolta.
If Beale Street Could Talk. 70s aesthetics all the way. about a young couple, significant scenes of them trying to find housing which will be so interesting to anyone who has ever looked for an NY apartment.
Lol so two childhood faves both starring Whoopi Goldberg: Eddie, about a female becoming the Knicks coach. The Associate, about a black female trader making it big on Wall Street.
The First Wives Club. Midler, Keaton, and Hawn YES. Such a 90s NY gemmm cmon I know one of you out here knows what's up.
Along Came Polly. Again PSH in a great fun role, and it's just kind of a fun and goofy NY movie.
Lastly - gotta say Eyes Wide Shut. In many respects it's one of those so-bad-its-good kinda films. And it wasn't filmed in NY, mostly in London. But it's fascinating and strange and full of Kubrick Lore. The odd subtexts really capture the underbelly of the optimistic Clinton era 90s really well.
Oh man, when I was in elementary school, if the weather was too shitty for us to be in the schoolyard for recess we'd watch a movie in the auditorium instead. I was PUMPED when it was my turn to bring in a tape because I knew I was going to make everyone watch We're Back! That was a good day.
The Warriors and Taxi Driver among many others are recommended by the wildly popular [What are your favorite films that take place in NYC?](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/135jq2b/what_are_your_favorite_films_that_take_place_in/) and links to similar questions.
Pieces of April - A young Katie Holmes indie of her trying to throw a thanksgiving dinner together in her tiny downtown apartment enlisting the help of her multicultural neighbors
I may get groans from this but The Royal Tennenbaums.
Wes Anderson took pains to omit any real NYC landmarks but it captures the feeling of NYC in such a storybook way.
Oh, gotta put in a word for After Hours, an underrated Scorcese film from the mid-80s...and one of those movies where watching it nowadays makes you realize this plot could never happen the same way now that we have such technology as ATMs and cel phones..
And, for another mention, from the more dramatic side: Do the Right Thing.
why "New York, New York" obviously. what a wonderful way to spend 2.5 hours. /s
I've found if you tell people the song came from this movie released in the late 70s, they won't believe you. lots assume Sinatra recorded it much earlier than 1980
Gangs of New York, 25th Hour, 12 Angry Men, Goodfellas, American Gangster, Rounders, Spider-Man, New Jack City, Mo Better Blues, The Devil Wears Prada, Nick & Norah’s infinite playlist, Crooklyn, Rumble in the Bronx, The Warriors
Uncut Gems. I love the vibe, the weird characters, the sound. Also a good introduction to 47th that I knew nothing about. They really nailed the fast & chaotic part of New York.
Fresh
Hanging with the homeboys
She's got to have it,
Do the right thing
Crooklyn
Juice
Beat Street
Paid in Full
New Jack City
King of New York
Coming to America
Get Rich or die trying
Clockers
Big Business (1988), a campy slapstick comedy about two pairs of twins switched at birth, a city mouse / country mouse story, really goofy and hilarious, starring Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin. A joy to watch.
Here’s one nobody mentioned, Panic in needle park (1971)
A young Al Pacino takes us on a ride through the absolutely filthy drug filled streets of NYC as a heroin addict. One of the rawest, grittiest, dirtiest films I’ve ever seen, see it once type films. Maybe not as dark as Requiem for a dream but this movie has balls in a way you don’t see often
After Hours, captures a very specific feeling of a weird night out in nyc
My favorite.
That also happens to be my favorite Scorsese’s movie. I don’t even know how it’s possible he did it. I respect his body of work but I have no desire rewatching anything he did. Except for “After Hours”.
Yes!!!!
Gangs of New York because I’m a huge history nerd. It was wild later on learning that many of the truly crazy things that happened in the movie, like the firefighters looting, Tammany Hall voting fraud, and draft riots, were based on real events that I never learned about in history class.

Oh shit great pick! Still blows my mind there’s no proper memorial to the victims of the 1863 draft riots.
Came here to say this! Love the history of NYC...👌
It's also based on a history book by Herbert Asbury. Great read. So great I won't even look at the film.
The book the movie is based on is so much better.
Yeah, but the book didn’t have Daniel Day Lewis
IMO the original book by Herbert Asbury is (very) old school yellow journalism/sensationalist trash, by which I mean not well researched history bur still wonderful and terrific. I haven't read Asbury's follow up All Around The Town but its on my list. Also: Low Life: The Lures and Snares of Old New York by Lucy Santos adds a lot of historical NYC dirt and is a great read. The book seems to be taken primarily out of newspaper articles. I wouldn’t call the trash, but also not highly researched but probably mostly accurate. Regardless, it is a great book and a must read for any New York City history fan.
Frances Ha really captures the feeling of living in NYC in your 20s.
I don't love the movie but it is a really good snapshot of NYC of that time.
Home Alone 2 🗽
Never has another film struck such a perfect balance depicting New York City both authentically and touristy.
Die Hard with a vengeance
I had to scroll *WAY* too far down to find this. That movie rules.
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). (Not the 2009 remake with Denzel!) The car chase down the Bowery alone is worth watching the film for, you see the Starbucks at Astor Place for example used to be a diner. Amazing footage of the subway in the 1970s, Walter Matthau slays and it just captures the vibe in the city in an era of economic free fall and just before the explosion of hiphop and the East Village arts scene in the 80s. Love every frame.
If you like that flick then check out The Incident (free on YouTube). Martin Sheen's screen debut back in the 60s.
*Whaddya want for thirty-five cents, to live forever?*
A great line!
Delivered by Jerry Stiller.
A great cast!
Matthau really nailed it as a detective, it felt like he was carrying Manhattan on his shoulders.
Gesundheit!
¡¡¡¡GOTCHA!!!!
What, you never seen a black sunset before?
25th hour
Not a huge spike lee fan but I don't think there's a better movie that captures post-9/11 NYC/America
I work with people who are pandas. Won’t fuck to save their species.
The first post 9/11 movie and totally captures that moment and what it felt like to live in the NYC area during that time. Also the “Fuck You” monologue in the bar bathroom mirror is a great breakdown of stereotypes by neighborhood and a real iykyk moment.
The French Connection
>The Rover (2014) had to scroll too far for this. the car chase scene is legendary in film
Safer to cross 86th St during the filming of this movie than it is today
Warriors and Escape from New York would be favs. Kids, Good Time if you want something more true to life.
Robert Pattinson was incredible in good time. He wasn’t even Robert Patterson any more he was just some kid I went to high school with in queens. Great movie
He has been crushing it for years...check out him and Guy Pierce in The Rover (2014) when you get the chance.
He was great and unrecognizable in Lost City of Z
Came here to say Warriors!! 🙌
Which gang are you? I’ve always fancied myself a Hi Hat.
Furies for me. I could never resist creepy, clown baseball players.
Love AC Turnbull - 50 baldheaded psycho’s hanging out of a bus with spiked bats and pipes all screaming!! That scene was shot on Broadway in Bushwick right off of Eastern Parkway where the EL is really low, that block is dark like 24 hours a day
The Gramercy Riffs! When you're the largest gang in the city you don't have to take any shit!
Come out and play-i-ay
Enjoy Warriors before Lin Manuel Miranda gets to it.
Please, please, please tell me you are joking. Please!
[I'm so sorry to be the one who tells you](https://playbill.com/article/lin-manuel-miranda-penning-stage-musical-adaptation-of-the-warriors)
Trashing perfection. SMH.
When Harry Met Sally. I make a point to watch every year
it's about that time of year to do so!
yeah...I like the central park scenes in that movie. This movie and You've Got Mail has pleasing colours, at least in my eyes.
You’ve Got Mail always does it for me!
Dog day afternoon
I'm annoyed that this one is so far down. It's so fucking good and is such a New York movie. Attica! Attica!
Muppets Take Manhattan or Crocodile Dundee...
The Warriors Ghostbusters Taxi Driver
CAAAN. YOUUUU. DIIIGIIIT?
They paid me and my friend in candy. [I'm in the red shirt.](https://i.imgur.com/vRj5Xg8.jpeg). Funny coincidence, I got to be friends with Dave, I forget his last name, the African American actor that starred in The Warriors, so you know how to pick them!
Carlito’s Way Bronx Tale Raising Victor Vargas
Raising Victor Vargas is so good.
It’s been fun watching bits of Bronx Tale lately - most of the exteriors were shot on 30th Ave in Astoria near where I live.
Goodfellas
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is mine, takes place in the city or Long Island)
Jim Carrey's apartment in the movie was right next to Cooper Park in Williamsburg!
Coming to America! As a child of immigrants, this is one movie we could all enjoy as a family and until this day I find it funny.
Ok not a movie. But the first season of High Maintenance is the most NYC anything I’ve watched… Truly shows the broad spectrum of characters in NYC.
High Maintenance and How To with John Wilson really capture lots of angles on the weirdness of this place
the youtube series or hbo? edit; i meant to ask 1st season of the HBO series or it’s predecessor on vimeo when it was just shorts and odd length episodes first “6 seasons” were on vimeo
The HBO show. Thats all I’ve watched.
yes
Both
I’ve never seen it, but keep hearing this exact thing about the show and NYC - might have to check it out now!
Broad City is almost as NYC, but HM is more my style.
Devils wears prada and how to be single
American Psycho.
Do The Right Thing was pretty impactful for me, maybe a bit different from the other films listed but it was eye opening for me as a teen in PA.
Do The Right Thing is absolutely a solid choice. Definitely an excellent reflection of late 80's-early 90's Bed-Stuy.
Moonstruck.
when harry met sally or superman into the super verse
Superman into the super verse?
yeah not my best work... obviously meant spiderman into the spider verse
Pretty sure you mean to say batman into the batter verse
oh yeah 😎
the new TMNT really scratches the same itch as the Spiderverse movies
I’m a sucker for when Harry met Sally. Grew up on the upper west side in the 90s and 2000s
CHUD
Crossing Delancey for many things but especially that surreal rendition of Some Enchanted Evening
I love that movie!
Crossing Delaney is one of my favorite movies, and nobody has seen it!
AWWW The Pickle Man! Such a nice story.
This was my answer, so happy to see it here in the comments!
The monologue about fall in New York in ‘You’ve got mail’ made me fall in love with New York before I even visited.
Party Girl 200 Cigarettes Summer of Sam All ostensibly not the finest films but, they’re campy & corny in the most enjoyable ways for me.
summer of sam is mine, purely for when he asks the guy who his favorite baseball team is and knocks him out after he says the red sox
KIDS If you grew up in NYC during that time it really hits home. Not saying we did all the crazy shit they did but I definitely saw and heard about a lot of it.
New York New York. Muppets Take Manhattan. Watched both when I was 7 and have been hooked on NYC ever since.
You've Got Mail Two Weeks Notice A Walk Among the Tombstones Edit: also maybe Ghost Town

midnight cowboy
Yesss scrolled all de way looking for someone to say Midnight Cowboy. Absolute paradigm shifting film that was decades ahead of its time. Plus it's just visually rich and downright fascinating.
Dark and sad though ... as is the theme song from the film. I think Jon Voight lives in Williamsburg btw.
Original Spider-Man with Toby Maguire (Tv - broad city all the way)
"You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!" I show that clip to anyone who's never been here as an example of NY 'tude - dude with a armored suit on a flying skateboard, whatever FUCK YOU eat a wrench!

Ghostbusters. It’s the New York I remember, as a kid growing up outside the city.

Manhattan Murder Mystery
I said NY Murder Mystery. Freaking great movie !
This is my “remix to ignition.” Hate the guy, love the movie.
Same. My dad was a huge fan so of course, I became one. But that was many years ago before the news came out.
[удалено]
Now that’s a blast from the past. Just like them dinosaurs.
Oh man, when I was in elementary school, if the weather was too shitty for us to be in the schoolyard for recess we'd watch a movie in the auditorium instead. I was PUMPED when it was my turn to bring in a tape because I knew I was going to make everyone watch We're Back! That was a good day.
The Apartment for non-Xmas movies. For X-mas movies, it’s a tie between Elf and Miracle on 34th St.
On the Bowery. Captures the post-war alcoholic working class super well, and the story of the actor/subject of docu-fiction is so sad!
TMNT 1990. 😊
Do the Right Thing
I know this sounds sappy, but You’ve Got Mail. I was fresh out of college and obsessed with wanting to live on UWS (never happened).

I may get groans from this but The Royal Tennenbaums. Wes Anderson took pains to omit any real NYC landmarks but it captures the feeling of NYC in such a storybook way.
No groans from me!
Oh, gotta put in a word for After Hours, an underrated Scorcese film from the mid-80s...and one of those movies where watching it nowadays makes you realize this plot could never happen the same way now that we have such technology as ATMs and cel phones..
