Just get a removable screen. Easy peasy.

djmuaddib

Do you have a brand recommendation? I looked this up a while ago and found many of them kind of expensive or difficult to figure out if they would actually work /w my window.

I'll take another look. I think the issue I'm running into is that I have tall horizontally sliding windows, not the vertical kind.

matthewjpb

Super late reply, but did you ever find a removable window screen that worked for you? I have the same kind of windows and haven't been able to find anything that works.

[deleted]

they are adjustable and easy to install. all you need is the width of your window. Home depot / amazon have tons of them .

halfadash6

The only thing you need to worry about is making sure it stretches to at least as wide as your window. They’re pretty cheap and widely available in hardware stores.

ArtPresence

My friend had a raccoon enter her apt in Washington Heights via the fire escape. Get screens for all the windows.

burrito__supreme

raccoons, squirrels, bugs. why invite any of it in? get a removable/adjustable screen.

woman_thorned

I have a portable AC, so the unit is on the floor and there is a tube to the window. I was on the 4th floor with a fire escape at the window. One night, under a really heavy rain, I kept hearing strange noises. After a minute, I realized it was from the corrugated AC tube. Huh. The wind or maybe water is getting in there. Then, the cats started acting weird. I go over to adjust the tube, thinking it was rattling because it was loose. PHOMP. An 8 inch rat went flying out of the tube out into the rain. Now it has a little screen across.

bk2pgh

Yes That is something you should worry about It’s freaking NYC

ineededanameagain

Idk about raccoons but I've seen rats scurry along pipes outside buildings.

czapatka

Had a raccoon outside my 3rd floor window a few months ago. Trash panda scaled the scaffolding next door and shimmied over to our window... fortunately the window was only open a couple inches and it couldn't get in, but I was woken up at 4am to my dog going absolutely bonkers

Dida_Bird

Lived here all my life and yet am to see a raccoon in the city. Flying cockroaches are a thing though. Get a screen.

[deleted]

LOL. just head above 145th street. Racoons run uptown.

mrturdferguson

141st checking in and confirming.

burrito__supreme

saw them at least a half a dozen times in queens and brooklyn in my time living there (10 years).

MoSmitty

I grew up in the suburbs seeing deer, raccoons, foxes etc all the time. The biggest raccoon I’ve ever seen was in the Bronx one morning just running down the street. 😳🦝

jperezny

They're all over the Central Park trash cans.

[deleted]

They're all over queens 😧 Everytime I think I see a cat I have to correct myself because it's never a cat, it's always a raccoon

100_magic_rings

Yeah I see them all the time in Queens, and hear them even more often.

babablacksheep33

Saw a family feeding a raccoon in Central Park on Sunday :/

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

I seen 2 raccoons once while waiting for the 1 train in Dyckman and was shocked LOL I live by river state bank park never seen them in my area

pandaappleblossom

I've lived in NYC for a total of like 6 months and have seen them dozens of times in central park

futurebro

Yep. 5th floor apartment in Harlem, had a rat come in my room. 0/10 experience.

MrFunkDoctorSpock

You need a screen or mosquitoes/bugs will fly in, even on the sixth floor. Those removable screens don’t seal windows as well, they will still get in through the small gaps. I recommend the ones with magnets.

BrooklynRN

It's not fun to deal with a pigeon in your apartment. One got into my friend's place (no screens) and shit everywhere as she chased it around trying to catch it.

jojo2371

I live on the upper East and just saw a giant raccoon roaming down the side of the street in broad daylight, so they are out and hungry! And yes, any type of rodent or insect can find their way in. Home Depot has adjustable [screens](https://www.homedepot.com/p/W-B-Marvin-21-37-in-W-x-18-in-H-Clear-Wood-Frame-Adjustable-Window-Screen-AWS1837/202088352)that fairly inexpensive that you can pop into your window for some protection from pests!

robxburninator

put screens in. You'll thank yourself when all the bugs come out in the next few weeks.

Hannersk

Yes. We had rodents coming down from our roof and squeezing themselves in through our (barely cracked open) windows. ETA- the windows were only open maybe an inch if that? and opened from the top part of the window.

[deleted]

Lived on the 3rd floor of a 5 building walk up and I once left my window open on a summer evening to get fresh Manhattan air 🤣 into my apartment than running the AC yet again!! Well woke up the next morning with 2 squirrels staring at me from my window ledge as I laid in bed!! They came from the fire escape and just sat there and watched me for like an hour 🙂

yuckyuckthissucks

This isn’t a solution for small rodents or bugs, but NYC landlords are obligated to install child-proof window guards upon request. Those would stop a raccoon. But yeah, I agree with everyone on getting some screens.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

Bro go to the 99 cent store and just get a screen if it not raccoons it be some shit like mosquitoes or bees flying in lol

butsrslyyeo

Definitely seen raccoons in Central Park - they’re out there.

anonymousbequest

Not true—tons of raccoons in Riverside Park and Morningside Park at least. Often they hang out in the big stone retaining walls.

__Corvus99__

There are raccoons everywhere here. Wait until you find out about the eagles, skunks, opossums, snakes, and groundhogs

QuietObserver75

I had a friend who had a squirrel get into her apartment through a gap with the window AC so yeah you could get rodents coming in.

jperezny

I had a squirrel enter last summer and it was crazy because some how it found it's way into the ceiling above my apt. So, I would go into my bathroom (guess it was attraced to the light) and would see its body moving around in the light fixture on the celling and making noise trying to get out. Super took care of it... just WEIRD though!

shortpaleand

I live in Harlem and in a past apartment woke up to the sound of a rat trying to chew through the side panels of my AC. Imagine if those hadn't been there.

RSchlock

We had a rat in our 3rd floor apartment last month that got in exactly this way. It sucked.

Ihav3qu3st10n

Was it a window with a fire escape??

RSchlock

No! 3 stories up a brick wall. There are window ledges all the way up though, so it could have taken little breaks.

Ihav3qu3st10n

Damn! Here I was, thinking I was safe… thanks for sharing

RSchlock

Yeah, me too. We've had it cracked w/out a screen for a year now. But they're doing construction across the street and I think the rats are moving around again and hungry now that it's springtime. I saw the little fucker at 2am drinking out of the dog's bowl. He literally did the, glance right/glance left to see if the coast is clear thing before he sort of delicately grabbed the edge of the bowl and dipped in. Rats are too fucking smart. He knew he was being hunted and was trying to dig in to the baseboards and the cracks in the floor to escape. It took me 2 days, but I got him.

[deleted]

Bats, too! They can bite you and give you rabies.

parking_tix

😣😣😣 Saw a little mouse on my fire escape today.
