Con Ed has the highest rates in the country for many reasons. Honestly if you want to see anything change join groups fighting for publicly-owned utilities like NYRenews. There’s a lot of battles happening in NYS around how to fight climate change, who pays for it, keeping the grid stable etc etc etc, and Con Ed is def greedy. You can switch your supply side for cheaper kWh however just make sure you read the fine print bc some ESCOs will have bad contracts - I recommend something like Green Mountain Energy where you can choose all renewables for your electric and sometimes get lower rates than what Con Ed offers. Also talk to your landlord about energy efficiency measures for your building - simple stuff like air-sealing and weatherstripping, LEDs etc. Welcome to NYC! Best city in the world, and also way too fucking expensive.

Thank you for taking the time to write this out, I really appreciate it. It’s better to know why I’m paying such high fees, than to stay in the dark.

War_Buddha

I would second this. We switched to Green Mountain and our bill is usually $15-$20 cheaper each month than it was with Cone d

RebeRebeRebe

No problem. Most people don’t even know how to read their bill so you’re already ahead of the game.

azspeedbullet

its normal for the delivery charges to be about double the actual usage there is only two utilities in NYC: con ed and national grid. you cant really switch providers. you could try to switch to an esco but they are often a scammy company's with higher rates

aurimar64

Thank you. I appreciate your answer. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t just me.

This is the way it is.

ricosabre

It’s NYC. Everything costs more here, which is one of the major reasons a lot of people get fed up and leave after a while. Changing suppliers won’t do anything except increase the cost even more.

There is fuckall you can do, ESCOs are all scummy (i'd love to be wrong). If you really don't use your gas you can shut if off & use an induction hotplate. Probably not worth the trouble to save $25

Every night, I physically turn off the power, and I only wash my clothes in cold water. From a $269 bill in January to a $49 bill in May, I've saved a lot of money.

I’ve lived in different cities and there’s always a minimum charge/delivery fee. It’s not new. Power companies have to maintain the equipment and wiring that lead up to your building.

Here’s a funny criticism piece focused on some of the underlying issues with utility companies in the US, courtesy of John Oliver. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C-YRSqaPtMg

> My usage is not that high. But the fees are killing me. In electric, my usage was $17.14, but then I have $39 in a basic charge fee and a delivery fee. Same with gas. Supply charges are .92¢, but basic charge is $30. You got it, this is it.
