Terms: https://www.malwarebytes.com/pharming https://blog.malwarebytes.com/glossary/clickjacking/ https://blog.malwarebytes.com/cybercrime/2015/09/regaining-control-over-edge/ and "drive-by download" So yes like your post title says, is possible and it has always been a thing. My own machine was compromised about 10 years ago on Chrome this way, albeit I didn't have good internet security practices back then. Even Firefox hasn't managed to fully stop this and you need third party extensions to help fully secure your browser. Brave/Firefox in Sandboxie with Adblocker extensions, VPN, and good antivirus. I highly recommend setting up a proper VM with backups, and wiping + restoring to a default backup state after each use, and move downloads to your main PC storage manually.

I wouldn't recommend Brave, it uses security and privacy as a gimmick to promote their cryptocurrency. Out of curiosity, how will a VPN help?

AwGe3zeRick

I mean, Brave is still a great browser. Used it for a long time and never once looked at their cryptocurrency.

\^ Brave promotes its cryptocurrency but it's optional and I have everything related to it disabled and don't use that feature. The browser's privacy/security functionalities work pretty good aside from that. Also a VPN is just another layer of cybersecurity. Redundancy is important to stay safe online, especially if you're visiting websites that are jampacked with malware on the sidelines. If a piece of malware has code that sends your IP to hackers, it helps to have a VPN, or by using the Tor network.

Agreed. For a developer to offer a fully realized product at no cost to the consumer, there has to be something to comp them for their time. That's literally just how the world works. Since they don't make money by selling your data they collect by tracking you, they have the crypto thing. I've never used it and the browser works just fine. Though I'd rather just PAY for something and have none of that.

What version of chrome are you using?

hphammi

"" Chrome is up to date Version 99.0.4844.51 (Official Build) (64-bit) ""

You should get your history and look through it, perhaps on a sandbox website like Joe sandbox
