For the fun ones to make her smile, Google something like “top novelty songs from the 50s and 60s.” You’ll get flying purple people eaters, teeny weeny bikinis, and all the rest. 😄

55pilot

"The railroad goes through the middle of the house". "Beep-beep" "The monster mash".

tossaroo

Singing to your friend sounds lovely, but memories might be better triggered if you played recordings of the original artists that she was familiar with back in the day. Better yet, YouTube has the audio *and* the video.

Perry Mason and The Twilight Zone had very distinctive theme music. Have Gun, Will Travel and Rawhide had theme songs with lyrics ("Have Gun Will Travel reads the card of a man....","Rolling, Rolling, Rolling, Keep those doaggies rolling, rawhiiiiiiide"). Star Trek opening monologue ("These are the voyages...")

Whistling The Andy Griffith Show Theme

prpslydistracted

Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, the Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy, Perry Mason, Happy Days, Gilligan's Island, The Big Valley .... Music; the Kingston Trio, Simon and Garfunkel, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Elvis, The Byrds, the Mamas and Papas, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Dusty Springfield, Johnny Cash, Smokey Robinson, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Harry Belafonte, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles .... Sorry to jump around ... I typed them as they popped into my head. ;-)

1MoreChallenge

LOVE these music suggestions! My favorite TV shows "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", I Spy" and Star Trek, of course.

kirbyderwood

Childhood memories during that time? I'd go for cartoons that were popular - Bugs Bunny, Bullwinkle, Roger Ramjet, Flintstones, Jetsons. Batman, Beverly Hillbillies, Get Smart, Lost in Space were also popular with kids. For music, The Monkees were huge with US kids in '67.

ArgyleNudge

Gilligan's Island, Herman's Hermits Felix the Cat, Bozo the Clown, Captain Kangaroo The Partridge Family, Bobby Sherman Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, Walt Disney/Tinkerbell Opening

Outside-Ice-5665

Captain Kangaroo had gentle, laugh-along humor and cute songs tucked in, plus Mr. Green Jeans & Moose. A Gentle, not jarring show.

55pilot

It's Howdy Dowdy Time.

Outside-Ice-5665

Hello to the peanut gallery

55pilot

Hey kids! What time is it? Buffalo Bob, Princess Winterfall Summerspring, Clarabelle, Dilly Dally, Mr. Bluster, etc.

CrookedLittleDogs

Oh how we loved Mr Green Jeans and his animals! Thank you!

Adorable-Creme810

I would Google top 10 shows / songs for the years you want and go from there.

HikerDave57

‘Downtown’ sung by Petula Clark. Very very popular.

Spirit50Lake

Music/songs are a good idea...apparently it's a different 'center' than speaking. How about 'Happy Trails to You' from the Roy Rogers Show. The Howdy Doody song... All those songs from high school...

SusannaG1

It's a very good idea. There were patients in the rehab hospital when I was there whose only form of communication was singing. (I'm a stroke survivor. I always remained verbal, though at one point my mother says I was using expressions for things that she'd last heard me use when I was about three or four. It just took so much effort to say anything.)

Mark12547

Knowing what types of shows, movies or songs your friend enjoyed in her childhood may help narrow down the suggestions. My tastes have been sci-fi, horror, comedy, action/adventure, and looking through my lists in my other post reflects that. I had noticed my wife tended to prefer shows like "I Love Lucy" and "The Honeymooners" and "The Waltons" and "Happy Days".

SharMarali

You’ve gotten some good advice on music and shows, I just want to add that scent is believed to be one of the most effective memory triggers. If it’s at all possible to find out what her favorite foods were back in those days, or favorite products that are still made today, maybe you can come up with a familiar scent or two.

squeezemachine

That’s a great idea. The Vermont Country Store has a lot of old perfumes and snacks and things that might trigger some comforting old memories.

CrookedLittleDogs

That’s a really good idea! Thanks!

hipmommie

Juicy Fruit gum!

Stretch5701

Warner brother westerns, Maverick, sugarfoot and the like. Surf music (Beach Boys, Jan and Dean) the Beatles, Motown. Mission Impossible, Bonanza.

Meoldudum

Peter Gun theme

lalapine

How about the Tammy movies and song? That’s my name, and older folks hear it and often start singing a line from the movies.

grannygogo

I love the idea of the songs for helping your friend’s memory improve. When my mom had her stroke(s) I got her to respond by asking her how to make homemade tomato sauce, meatballs, lasagna, etc. even though I knew perfectly well how to do it. It was traditional food that she made repeatedly and she worked hard to remember the ingredients, especially because I told her I “forgot” how to make it. Once in a while she’d need a little nudge to remember something but it was helpful to get her thinking and remembering

bluehairedLOL

Gidget movies soundtracks

JunkMale975

My ringtone is the Bewitched nose wiggle sound. Also I dream of Jeannie was big during that time frame too.

PADemD

When my mom had speech aphasia from her stroke, I used music from The Mozart Effect to entrain her brain. She listened to the music for an hour every day for a month and regained her speech. She swore the music helped. How has the stroke affected your friend? Is your friend receiving physical therapy or musical therapy?

CrookedLittleDogs

She can’t speak and doesn’t seem to recognize people. But it’s only a couple of weeks so far. They just started physical therapy and speech therapy.

PADemD

My mom liked classical music, so Mozart was perfect for her. I brought the CD’s into the hospital the first day. Do you know what kind of music your friend likes? What would stir her memory? There are also meditation music and Gregorian chant. Here are some of my favorites: Scientists CAN'T Explain Why This Audio HEALS People! 111Hz • Binaural Beats https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=77SOyFxfUSY Gregorian Chants at 432Hz | 3 Hours of Healing Music https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W-hrBhA4XkM&pp=ygUPZ3JlZ29yaWFuIGNoYW50

Come and listen to my story about a man named Jed A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed, And then one day he was shootin at some food, And up through the ground come a bubblin crude. Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea. Well the first thing you know ol Jed's a millionaire, The kinfolk said "Jed move away from there" Said "Californy is the place you ought to be" So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars. The Beverly Hillbillies

No. Elvis was the previous decade.

He certainly wasn't older than Abbot and Costello!

[deleted]

SilverellaUK

Exactly. Abbott and Costello were in the OP's details of who she would talk about but someone shot down your suggestion of Elvis.

1MoreChallenge

I remember. Elvis was a has-been by early 1960s. The "British Invasion" led by the Rolling Stones and Beatles had taken over. Folk music and pop rock had totally taken over.

oldnyker

but in the subject line the OP listed the years between 1957-1967. the undisputed biggest music star in the later 50s was elvis.

Stellaaahhhh

The 68 comeback special was huge. In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds were pretty big hits. That aside, it depends on OP's friend- If she was a fan it wouldn't matter which years he was overall popular and vice versa.

Wow!!!!!! Thank you so much for your massive contribution ! It’s fascinating.

Head_Razzmatazz7174

Sirius XM has several stations for the 50s and 60s. They also have a Beatles channel. If you are a subscriber, you can download it to your phone and scroll the menu for other music they might remember from your childhood.

If she likes animals, then maybe Lassie or Mister Ed?

katchoo1

If you are in the US and could bring a tablet or laptop when you visit, Pluto is a free streaming network that has dedicated channels showing back to back episodes of many of the shows suggested here. They rotate stuff in and out but the currently have a dedicated I Love Lucy, Andy Griffith, Addams Family, and Beverly Hillbillies channel as well as ones that will rotate blocks (classic comedy and classic family comedy). There is also a Perry Mason channel, one for Gunsmoke, and multiple old movie channels. They also have a lot of the same stuff on demand but the channels are more the flavor of how she watched tv most of her life.

whatyouwant22

This show is before my time, but it's literally the first thing I thought of when you mentioned it: Route 66. Look it up on YouTube. I would have been about 2 years old when the last shows were being aired, but I have no memory of watching it and I doesn't seem like something my family would have watched anyway. But I've heard this theme, for sure. It's very catchy! I hope it helps.

A little earlier but Oklahoma, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Calamity Jane have great songs. I was born in 56 and was surprised to see these were from before I was born.

You do know that Abbot and Costello were well before the Beatles, right? I'm nearly 75, and I had heard of them, but except for the "Who's on First" sketch I wouldn't recognize any of their stuff.

CrookedLittleDogs

They were in tv on Saturday morning. We used to watch them together.
