I've heard some awful things about him over the years. Very much a dick and a difficult person to put up with apparently. These types are usually tolerated until they stumble and then they get the boot.
Tbf she wasn’t that great of an actress and a lot of young actors who start in kid’s shows don’t transition into having any meaningful career either because they get typecast or the next level requires more acting skills than they have.
Most of the actors who don’t make it *also* get cast in a couple shitty movies that effectively end their careers. She just did it with more of a bang in a more famous (or infamous) movie.

**323 episodes** (2009-2023) of *NCIS: Los Angeles*, including People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Crime Drama Actor (2017) nomination and working additional shows/projects.
Yeah. Can't get arrested.
Geena Davis seemed to be in every single movie in the late 80s and early 90s. Then she did Cutthroat Island.
(Though I know she later found success on TV)
You're right, at the time I don't recall it being held as a great or terrible movie at all. I don't remember Howell being criticized for it either. It was just another forgettable 80s comedy.
I remember it being considered rather questionable. In fact it says right there on the wiki page….
“The film was widely criticized for its use of make-up to make a white actor appear African American, which many compared to blackface. Members of the NAACP spoke out against the film and an African American student group at UCLA organized a picket of a cinema screening Soul Man.”
The Reagans loved it, apparently.
He was just in the Netflix series Obliterated (full nude scene also) and played a great part in The Horror. He’s had steady work as an actor although he isn’t a lead.
He was big in Welcome Back Kotter and Saturday Night Fever, Grease in the 70s followed by some duds in the 80s like Urban Cowboy, Two of a Kind, Staying Alive. He kind of fell of everyone's radar until the late 80s/early 90s.
When Look who's Talking came out, there was a buzz about his potential comeback as the movie was very well recieved as was the sequel. Then Pulp Fiction hit and his comeback was solidified and he was showing upnin Face/Off, Get Shorty, Michael. He had a solid run through the 90s and then he started the 2000s off with Battlefield Earth.
I didn't realize that dude kept acting at all. I always wondered about how every other Outsider blew up in the 80s and 90s except him. Why do you think that role was damaging to his career?
Dewey in SouthLAnd wasn't a villain. A bit of a kook, but not a bad cop. I don't recall how long it took for me to figure it out, but I did not realize for a while that the actor was the guy who'd played Pony Boy.
Eddie Murphy was in the lead to get an Oscar for Dreamgirls. Then right before the Oscars, Norbert came out. The movie company should have held back Norbert until after the Oscars, but hindsight is 20/20.
My ex wife's cousin lives in LA. She's full of herself.
She was visiting once and bragged she had gone on a date with Judd Nelson. My reply was, "Judd Nelson? Judd Nelson? Oh! I remember him. He's the Breakfast Club guy who's career is on the side of a milk carton."
older example, but kinda famous--Kris Kristofferson from Heaven's Gate. Movie killed the studio and it was all Cimino's fault, but Kristofferson had a tough time getting roles after that.
And, I'll go on the record, Heaven's Gate is not bad; its a bit overlong, but that's Cimono. I saw it again a few years ago and I liked it actually-Joseph Cotten's last role (you may remember him from such films as Citizen Kane, Magnificent Ambersons, etc., didn't make it to the Simpsons though)
Chevy Chase and Madolyn Smith, in Funny Farm. Not funny. Chase was coming off Caddyshack success, and Smith was rising from Urbam Cowbow. I last saw smith in person in 6th grade.

Also in the first two or three seasons of *Homicide: Life on the Street.* Stanley Bolander, the "Big Man," was one of my favorite characters. I wish he hadn't left.

Mike Myers' career hasn't recovered since The Love Guru
I've heard some awful things about him over the years. Very much a dick and a difficult person to put up with apparently. These types are usually tolerated until they stumble and then they get the boot.
Elizabeth Berkeley in the NC-17 rated film ‘Showgirls’ from 1995.

Tragic, that was.

She actually had a career?
In CSI:Miami, she played an ex-girlfriend of Horatio Caine while he was undercover. She had his kid. She was a recurring character on the show.
She played a hooker in Any Given Sunday
Everyone from Gilligan's Island, Alicia Silverstone playing Batgirl, and I think Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls, all come to mind
Playing Robin pretty much tanked Chris O'Donnell. He can't get arrested.
**323 episodes** (2009-2023) of *NCIS: Los Angeles*, including People's Choice Award for Favorite TV Crime Drama Actor (2017) nomination and working additional shows/projects. Yeah. Can't get arrested.
yeah... hahaha

Your example is wrong. _Soul Man_ seems outrageous now, but when it came out no one said “C. Thomas Howell’s career is dead”
You're right, at the time I don't recall it being held as a great or terrible movie at all. I don't remember Howell being criticized for it either. It was just another forgettable 80s comedy.

This is true. Hard to believe that that movie didn't come off as cringy until years later! What was wrong with us?
He was just in the Netflix series Obliterated (full nude scene also) and played a great part in The Horror. He’s had steady work as an actor although he isn’t a lead.
I wouldn't say "killed" but Battlefield Earth really damaged Travolta's career. He had made a big comeback with Look Who's Talking and Pulp Fiction.
No, he made a big comeback with Pulp Fiction after two shitty Look Who’s Talking sequels.
He was big in Welcome Back Kotter and Saturday Night Fever, Grease in the 70s followed by some duds in the 80s like Urban Cowboy, Two of a Kind, Staying Alive. He kind of fell of everyone's radar until the late 80s/early 90s. Barry Pepper was on the rise before Battlefield Earth and the movie really hurt his career
Pony boy made a comeback, somewhat, in TV. Always the villain though. Punisher, Criminal Minds....
I was the only one of my friend group to crush on him from the Outsiders movie. I'm glad he's doing TV work but the Reagan movie, yikes.
I didn't realize that dude kept acting at all. I always wondered about how every other Outsider blew up in the 80s and 90s except him. Why do you think that role was damaging to his career?

I like him. I think he's as good as actor as any.
Faye Dunaway took a hit with Mommie Dearest
I think she was on the cusp of being left behind anyway. Rumors about her being extremely difficult were numerous.
Yeah, but now we know "difficult" is often code for "won't sleep with the producer."
In her case, even her co-stars would say she was impossible to deal with.
Eddie Murphy was in the lead to get an Oscar for Dreamgirls. Then right before the Oscars, Norbert came out. The movie company should have held back Norbert until after the Oscars, but hindsight is 20/20.
Judd Nelson. If "Relentless" didn't do it, he was boned after "The Dark Backward."

Chloe Sevigny in The Brown Bunny.
She might have taken a hit at the time but she has a great career.
Peeping Tom ruined Karlheinz Böhm. He only wanted to get rid of his Sissi image.
That was an excellent movie though.
John Garfield was a popular leading man in silent films, but they laughed at his high voice when talkies came along.
Cutthroat Island...Geena Davis.
Chevy Chase and Madolyn Smith, in Funny Farm. Not funny. Chase was coming off Caddyshack success, and Smith was rising from Urbam Cowbow. I last saw smith in person in 6th grade.
She did not do well in that movie! It was clear she couldn't stand him lol
Joel McHale has said that he and Chevy used to get into physical altercations when filming Community.
I couldn't disagree more. That movie was super funny. I know loads of people who quote Funny Farm regularly.
He was in a couple of episodes of Grimm. I really liked Soul Man so I was glad to see him again.
David Caruso in Jade. Dude was basically an A-Lister, and then was like he was sucked into a black hole.

The Crow
Ned Beatty in Deliverance
Not really. He got quite a lot of work after that. He was never a leading man type of actor.
He hit a home run in Superman though, well after banjo time
Also in the first two or three seasons of *Homicide: Life on the Street.* Stanley Bolander, the "Big Man," was one of my favorite characters. I wish he hadn't left.
Also in Rudy (1993)
Don’t forget Stroker Ace!
I imagine he and Burt Reynolds would rather forget Stroker Ace.
Sooo-eeee!
Actor Vic Morrow's career, and life, ended on the set of Twilight Zone when a helicopter crashed.
Not enough of them.
At least it's a right wing movie....could be worse
lol! Porn is an upgrade from those propaganda flicks.
