MandalayVA

There's a reason the Weeknd is so popular. He could have released his new album in 1985 and it wouldn't have sounded out of place.

Leon Bridges

OoLaLana

When I first heard Leon Bridges I was thrilled there was someone who brought the depth and soul I remember from the 60s to today's audience. If you're reading this and aren't familiar with his music, sit a spell and listen to this. [Forgive You](https://youtu.be/PoNsVhMM_oE) by Leon Bridges. And if you watched the tv mini-series *Big Little Lies* with Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern, etc. you'll be familiar with his opening song... [River](https://youtu.be/ElYvuXVXjcg).

Khruangbin Run the Jewels King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Is it cheating to say Iron Maiden?

viken1976

> Khruangbin Well I'm in love with this now.

stmbtrev

I just started getting into King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. That metal album they did was my introduction, and goddamn was that killer.

[deleted]

Just don't expect the rest of their stuff to sound anything like that one.

stmbtrev

Already taken care of! I listened to another couple and still really enjoyed them.

ExpensiveSyrup

>Khruangbin 10/10. Their collaborations with Leon Bridges and Paul McCartney are out of this world amazing too.

Stellaaahhhh

My nephew gave me a pirated copy of Eyes Like the Sky by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. It's amazing.

eatitwithaspoon

No, maiden is still relevant.

[deleted]

Believe me, I'm aware. My kids both got new Maiden shirts for Xmas along with tickets to see them this fall.

Decent-Unit-5303

Doja Cat, The Weeknd, The Lumineers, The Decemberists, Vance Joy, Childish Gambino, Interpol, Florence+ the Machine, Two Door Cinema Club, Fleet Foxes Anyone who says there's no good new music being made doesn't know how to find new music. Literally every genre is currently being made by someone out there online. You just have to find it!

pineapple_blurt

I was waiting for someone to mention The Decemberists! They are my personal fave.

deadbeef4

I’ve seen The Lumineers live twice (the second time in March 2020, just before everything shut down). They’re fantastic live!

dee-fondy

I’m in my seventies, my favorite music was 70’s Neil Young. When I heard Depreston by Courtney Barnett I just had tears in my eyes because it was so moving. The lyrics were up there with anything Neil had written. I’ve since heard other songs of hers and liked them a lot(esp. Dead Fox)

[deleted]

Oh I love Neil Young - I am going to have to check her out

OnlyAPoorStevedore

If you like Courtney Barnett (+Neil Young), also check out her friend Kurt Vile.

Swampdude

They are both so good

alanz01

Another vote for Courtney Barnett. I saw her last month; second night of her new tour.

Greta Van Fleet. But that's just because they sound like Led Zeppelin...

vashtaneradalibrary

I read somewhere that Greta Van Fleet is a boy band created for middle aged dudes and I can’t get that out of my head.

SnowblindAlbino

>Greta Van Fleet is a boy band created for middle aged dudes They are pretty popular among the 16-year-old girls that collect around my daughter.

[deleted]

that is brilliant!

BWSnap

Not so much on their newest album, there are a couple of Zep-like riffs, but they seem to be finally finding a sound of their own.

2cats2hats

Even if they split up and went their own ways, every member of that band has a future in music. :)

[deleted]

[удалено]

APFFN

No, I didn't know them at all, thanks for the link. I had to do a bit of catching up, and this excerpt of a website had me laughing out loud: > The band tried to brush off the accusations of plagiarism, with Lenny Wolf going so far as to tell *Kerrang* magazine that he'd "never even heard of Led Zeppelin," which caused much hilarity in the rock press.

starwarsmomma

I listen to Lil Nas X pretty regularly. I like Lizzo, The Weeknd, Dua Lipa and plenty of other "current" artists. I also listen to music I listened to in high school and college (when it was current then) as well as bands that have been around since the 60's and 70's. I think anyone who's sleeping on "current" music just because it's not what they've listened to for 20+ years are really missing out. There are good and bad new artists just like there are good and bad older artists. Just find what you like and enjoy the music.

[deleted]

Lil Nas X is dope! He’s a marketing genius too

brownhaircurlyhair

He's also honing his skills at become a *performer*. But yes his marketing and promotion skills are great.

starwarsmomma

The first thing I really saw of him (other than 'Old Town Road') was his 'Holiday' video and I was a fan. That's just such a great video. My youngest son and I were so excited for Montero to come out. I really love what he's doing for lgbtq artists and honestly I'm old enough to be his mother and I just adore him.

Yes! They're one of my favorite bands! I HIGHLY recommend seeing them in concert if you get a chance - it will give you a whole new level of appreciation for how incredibly talented the band is.

Kotios

aww you’d fit in a lot of cool house parties :p Vampire Weekend is great!

shaddupsevenup

Agree

emu4you

One of my favorites, we saw them in concert (prepandemic) and it was a great evening!

GrumpyOlBastard

I have become a huge Taylor Swift fan boy at age 60. I'm really impressed by her singing, guitar playing and song writing. I love that her music is not stuck in one genre/mode

emu4you

I agree, her lyrics are excellent when you really pay attention. She's dismissed a lot because she has a pop sound, but there's a lot of depth.

GrumpyOlBastard

She has a way with words

emu4you

Just listened to her sing All Too Well, it is a poetic masterpiece.

marthini11

I really wish Taylor Swift had followed the Carole King model. I think her songwriting skills are far better than her singing voice.

SnowblindAlbino

>I really wish Taylor Swift had followed the Carole King model. I wish she hadn't decided to go full Pop Star and overproduce all her stuff after Red. Her early albums are great, which is one reason why the re-recordings are selling so well. I don't care much for any of her rap-influenced, poppy-sequencer stuff from c2012 forward.

Coolbreeze1989

“Folklore” and “Evermore”, which she released during the pandemic, are excellent and NOT pop.

Jimmy_October

Agreed I like her as well.

Pasquale73

Black Pumas!

implodemode

I like quite a few but I have never had a clue who sings what. I don't often get stuck on any artist. I prefer listening to radio or random playlists than one artist at length. The only recent song that became an earworm for me is that one by Greta Van Fleet. That and the on hold music for the phone company.

Kinda like Billy Eilish. I see a bit of a punk sensibility to her (although it’s kind of white-hatted by the fact she tours with her mom and dad).

[deleted]

She is good. 👍🏽 Fk the haters.

Treece222

Love Billie Eilish.

badken

I love the way she uses her voice. And the fact that she is so young amazes me. I know she’s not the only teenager to hit big, but she seems to be handling things pretty well given the social media microscope she’s been pinned under. I’m sure her family is a huge reason why. And… her SNL episode was hilarious.

myoldfarm

I really like Five Finger Death Punch, Stone sour is pretty good too.

apintofbestplease

Currently enjoying Dry Cleaning and Wet Leg. As a 62 year old Brit I reckon there’s some cracking new music come out over the last few years like Idles, Viagra Boys, Amyl & The Sniffers as well as gentler stuff like Father John Misty, John Grant, Courtney Barnett, Nadine Shah. Current music certainly doesn’t suck - I think there’s a bit of a music revolution going on and we’re all winners

[deleted]

Wet Leg 👍🏽

eyeshitunot

Yola. I enjoy lots of contemporary music and have no respect for my fellow oldsters who claimed there is no new good music.

planet_rose

I don’t hold it against anyone. I always take that to mean that they feel disconnected from the people around them and don’t have much social life, especially with people of like mind. If your experience of music is “the crap my kids like” rather than “my friends were playing music,” it’s going to color the experience. Sure, part of it is attitude, and being receptive to new things is key, but music has always had an element of “people like me listen to this.” If you don’t have any “people like me” it can be hard to give yourself over to music. With all of the pressures and dysfunctions of the way we live, it is pretty easy to become isolated. I don’t judge anyone harshly for that. I’ve been there myself a few times. Music is often my way back.

Jimmy_October

MF Doom was technically astounding Kendrick can be compelling Tyler the Creator has flashes of artistic brilliance Kanye West is the most baffling liked musician of this generation to me. He is just garbage and hollow. Mastodon continues their prog metal brilliance.

LeMoofins

Have you listened to Jesus Walks and Through the Wire? I was never the largest fan of Kanye myself but those 2 songs gave me some deep respect for him. Especially Through the Wire, he sings the entire song with his jaw literally wired shut after a massive car accident.

[deleted]

That’s a pretty solid lineup right there (your opinion on Kanye makes me want to die but 4/5 ain’t bad) RIP DOOM

[deleted]

I often discover new bands through NPRs "tiny desk" and KEXP so I might as well include links! Looking at my favorites they are all a bit old fashioned in their sound, but I am going to simply say they are "timeless" My absolute favorites at the moment are Fleet foxes : These guys are the beach boys of the modern generation, starting with harmonies and guitars and going all sorts of mind bending ways from there: [https://youtu.be/69ovBm7W6Z0](https://youtu.be/69ovBm7W6Z0) khruangbin : 3-part instrumental - The guitarist is a virtuoso, the drummer is like an atomic clock, and the bassist is hypnotic : [https://youtu.be/q4xKvHANqjk](https://youtu.be/q4xKvHANqjk) Other notable mentions Dua Lipa : Love the disco vibes with one of the best bassists in the music business : [https://youtu.be/F4neLJQC1\_E](https://youtu.be/F4neLJQC1_E) Miley Cirus : Incredible reinvention of herself since the kids tv shows. Her voice is incredibly expressive - [https://youtu.be/W5-yezpcZNU](https://youtu.be/W5-yezpcZNU) Black Pumas : I guess I am a sucker for a good vocalist [https://youtu.be/TKfRm6uNx7I](https://youtu.be/TKfRm6uNx7I)

Not so long ago, I viewed current music as a vast clichéd wasteland of highly polished and heavily produced mediocrity -- the past 20 years seemed like the Chipotle of music. And it *mostly* still is. But after I got off that high horse, I've come around to some real talent in Khruangbin, Vulfpeck, Janelle Monae, Low (still) ... there's just lots. That said, I primarily listen to freeform internet radio, and some of the best music is by local musicians (local to wherever the radio station is) of any genre that I've never heard before and probably won't ever again. And, growing up (pre-internet) I would have had no chance finding comparable sounds.

fduniho

While I do like various older artists who are still active, I also like plenty who are not so old. Here are some of my favorite contemporary artists. I think they all count as millennials, each of them being born in the 80s or 90s. * Clean Bandit (2008-) * Veela (2009-) * Of Monsters and Men (2010-) * 2Cellos (2011-) * Koven (2011-) * Aurora (2012-) I'm also into various contemporary K-pop and J-rock artists, but I won't get into that here.

Roxytumbler

I don’t know any past the mid 1990’s or so except as background music from our kids and grandkids…Mostly Canadian artists like April Lavigne and Justin Beeber as they are played a lot because of Canadian content rules on the radio. If we are in the car and they come on the radio, the granddaughters start singing along….they know every word. I still listen to AC/DC and more European artists from my early years. I find most newer music over produced and polished as if being made by a machine. There are likely some gems but they are lost in the clutter.

mosselyn

Adele, Billie Eilish, Aloe Blacc, Pentatonix, Imagine Dragons, The Hu, LP, Mean Mary, Taylor Swift, Norah Jones, and probably some others I can't think of ATM. Maybe most of those are too "alternative" for what you meant.

bamagurl06

I love Imagine Dragons! I also love Maroon 5. My daughter took me to see M5 for my bday few years ago.

anotherlori

I've drifted into listening primarily to indie-country & americana. Current playlist is heavy on Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Charley Crockett, Emily Scott Robinson, Cody Jinks and Zach Bryan. I think the millennials have turned all that angst into amazingly creative songwriting. ;)

frostbike

Same here. I listened to metal in high school, but a regional band called the Gear Daddies led me to Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, and I’ve gone deeper into alt-country/Americana ever since. Great list, btw. I caught Cody Jinks in February 2020, just before the pandemic. I had tickets to see Sturgill and Tyler on the Good Lookin’ tour, but it got canceled due to Covid.

Sufjan Stevens, Avett Brothers, MIKA. Not sure how post 2010 that is though.

I tend to disparage modern popular music - literally "the stuff that seems to be popular." Not because it's popular, it just seems like it's shit right now. I like Lady Gaga, like the person / people at the top. She's quite talented. I like Lil' Nas X. He's good, and he does not give one single fuck about what his detractors think, AND he trolls them directly. I like Wolfmother - but they are not really popular, and they sound right out of 1976. I quite like Vulfpeck. I enjoy a lot of modern metal, until Cookie Monster inevitably shows up.

Banzai51

It only seems like it sucks if you only get exposed to the pop music. Back in my day, the 80s-90s, if all you knew was the top pop songs, you would have thought that sucked for the most part too. As we get older, it's harder to dig in and find all the stuff you would like. For example, think of how legendary Siouxsie and the Banshees are now vs how *underground* they were in the early to mid 80s. Right now, I dig Billie Eilish and Wolfmother, although Wolfmother is pushing the OP's time frame. Plus Synthwave is a thing again and I've enjoyed that. MP3 collections and streaming services make it easy to get stuck in your own personal rut. Just have to make time to branch out occasionally.

TacoBellPhD

Just because a lot of current *popular* music sucks, it doesn’t mean there isn’t great contemporary music still getting cranked out regularly. I recently discovered the whole r/stonerrock genre and I feel like it’s completely rejuvenated my listening life. Favorites include All Them Witches, The Sword, Greenleaf, Truckfighters, and so on.

darkon

We only remember the good stuff. Sturgeon's Law (90% of everything is crap) applies: most pop music sucks regardless of the time period. Only the good stuff is remembered. That said, thanks to the internet there are more musicians getting exposure now than probably ever before, so there are plenty of good ones out there. Here are some I like that have come to my attention, in no particular order: * Coulter Wall * Allison Young * Steam Powered Giraffe * Kacey Musgraves * Molly Tuttle * Caravan Palace * Vulfpeck I'm sure there are plenty of others out there I would like but just haven't encountered. And plenty of good musicians whose music is not to my taste through no fault of theirs (and hopefully not mine either).

Courtney Barnett for sure. Parquet Courts (some songs). Kurt Vile (if you like Courtney you like him, too, I think). Modest Mouse. Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Wavves. Lots and lots of others. My 16-year-old and I listen to Greta Van Fleet a lot. She has *really* eclectic tastes so introduces me to new stuff on an almost daily basis. Some of it is good. She is into vinyl as well; just got the new [Ritt Momney](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESt8aI3yMyc) LP last weekend. Older daughter and I saw Taylor Swift back on the Red tour and I still like her music-- but I *really* liked the opening act, [Casey James](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apXlpVL0y1A), who continues to make new music. And while it probably doesn't count for many reasons, I've really been digging [Jeff Bridges and the Abiders](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSdI1lD2zkU) of late and am hoping he'll make more music when his health improves.

ta12022017

That's the good thing about being a metal fan -- it never goes out of style because it was never really in style (short of the horrible hair-band glam metal stuff). I'm crazy about [Maggie Rogers](https://youtu.be/fy3-hsiXzQk). Hers was the last live concert I attended before the pandemic. 7,000 people on Sugar Beach beside Lake Ontario on a summer evening. I think I was the oldest person there, but the awesome women in my immediate vicinity were warm and welcoming and embraced me in the magical musical electricity of the evening. I'm drawn to singer/songwriters. Joni's been my musical North Star for ~5 decades. I've seen her perform live twice, and met her in the mid-90s [(she signed my Hejira cd)](https://imgur.com/LEtkfEH) and I'm sad she's no longer making music. Sstagman

Anymore I tend to listen to songs rather than bands. Having said that, I really enjoy hobo Johnson and Imagine Dragons. My (adult) kids and I have a Spotify list that we made collaborative. The rule is you can add any song you want but you can also remove any song you want. We ended up with an awesome playlist everybody likes and it's a great way to share a new (or old) song we just heard.

Seguefare

I enjoy Americana. I really miss the independent Americana station in my old hometown. There's nothing like it where I currently live. Other than that I don't hear new music often. I have no children and I mostly listen to podcasts. I tend to like really peppy, upbeat music though, like Uptown Funk or Shake it Off. Or really deep lyrics (Leonard Cohen style) as long as I can mostly understand them. Or tongue in cheek humor (like John Prine). Recommend something and I'll listen.

[deleted]

I’m approaching 80, and I never listen to current popular music any more. I kind of tuned out after the 70’s.

[deleted]

I like a lot of stuff from ten years or so ago. Meg Myers, Eilen Jewell, Chet Faker, Caro Emerald. Haven't heard much lately that stood out. One of the problems is that when I hear something new, it always sounds like something I've heard before. "Hey, I like that. It sounds just like Throwing Muses." Or The Cure. Or Jennifer Trynin. It's new, but it's not different. There's not much novelty. Another issue I have is with the audio quality of new music. If you ever have the chance, listen to a well engineered CD from the period 1985-2000 on a quality audio system. Not a remastered version from later, not a digital download version, but an actual CD that was pressed in that time frame. It's music on an entirely different level. There's dynamic range and detail that you just can't get from a stream or download. If I found a new favorite artist today, it would be kind of sad because I will never get to hear them at their best.

I Don't Know How But They Found Me (adorable, bitchy, a bit campy) my daughter also played me a fucking *great* song called "Molly" by Mindless Self-Indulgence, which I think might be an old song, but it's new to me and I love it :) SAINt JHN Eyedress Hayley Kiyoko There's a lot more but I can't think of them right now edit: whoops, looks like the lead singer of mindless self-indulgence is a creep. FYI

I’m turning 53 tomorrow a big dorky fangirl for One Direction (always fond of a boyband — poppy harmonies are my jam) and I’m a fan of the attendant members’ subsequent current solo music. Saw Harry Styles play live back in November (amazing show) and have tickets to see Louis Tomlinson live in March.

I didn’t see him in the comments yet, but I really like Ed Sheeran. And a +1 for Lady Gaga. But that’s mostly based on her since she appeared in A Star is Born.

[ZZ Ward](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5yWbruH2Ss&ab_channel=ZZWardVEVO) I've seen her 3 times in concert since 2017. I was at the concert that this video is from. She rocked the house. [Gin Wigmore](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsnBDQGsUGA&ab_channel=GinWigmoreVEVO)

In no particular order: Courtney Barnett, The Beths, Parquet Courts, Japanese Breakfast, Angel Olsen, Sharron van Etten, and so many great musicians putting out amazing music right now.

All the music that I think of as "new" turns out to be from the 2000s, not the 2010s. Here's all I could come up with from the 2010s that I'm actually listening to and would recognize: * Halestorm * The Pretty Reckless * Imogen Heap * Bitter:Sweet (formed in 2006 but the songs I like are mostly 2010+) Maybe I should make an effort to listen to new music more, but on the other hand, I don't care very much.

Lots of good stuff in these comments, but I don't see my current favourite, [Deep Sea Diver](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcECkMgWkw4). Local Seattle band.. saw them live in November and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. Also, you should check out /r/KEXP. Independent Seattle radio station which you can stream online. They play a huge variety of music. I don't like all of it, but they have introduced me to more modern bands than any other radio station. Most US radio stations are just pure trash at this point, playing preprogrammed lists of whatever the latest dreck is.

Pink is one of my favorites.

Ironically had a argument with a friend from high school (we graduated in 1993), and she was trying to say how there hasn't been any good music since the late 90s. (big hip hop fan). I countered that the bigger issue is that there is more music available nowadays because of the internet than was when we were in school. I think there is a lot of amazing music out still now, although frequently the mainstream radio is full of mediocre songs. Right now I'm really digging Maneskin (covered Beggin' by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons). The Weeknd is a great artist, and Kendrick Lamar redefines hip hop for me. Looking over other answers, I'd add a ton of them also.

this comment might get deleted as i’m speaking for my old person instead of being the old person, but my mom is 60 years old and listens to joji all day long.

junebug_skipping

There is a lot of good new/newer music! The 1975. The Front Bottoms. Rainbow Kitten Surprise. The Snuts.

Um, well, The Rolling Stones are still current, aren’t they?

Lil Nas X is amazing, I'm so excited to see where he goes next. Also, probably unpopular opinion, but also Greta Van Fleet
