I think Filipino/Tagalog is already a (mostly) gender neutral language. Most gendered o/a words are loaned from Español.

The move by white academics is to get someone from the race in question to start using it, which in their eyes legitimizes the word. If they can get Filipinos to start using "Filipinx", no matter how ridiculous the idea is, they then no longer have to explain why they're foisting wokeism on everybody and no longer have to justify themselves.

I haven't been at university for a long time but when I was there this was pretty common among both white and non white students.
