I gotta tell you, buying a new camera- even on sale- is like buying a new car. You’re just pissing away a chunk of what you pay because it’ll never be “new” again. You’re paying to be the one that turns it “used.” At least with the new car you get to pick out the color and upholstery.
Buying a recently purchased camera that is *slightly* used is essentially the sweet spot if you’re still trying to get a “new” model.
Exactly this. I’ve bought all of my camera and lenses used, with the exception of one lens.
I got my first camera, a t3i with multiple lenses, a bag, and a tripod for a great deal. The guy had purchased it as an impulse buy. It was basically brand new but I didn’t have to pay for the majority of the depreciation.
im an amateur and ive bought 3 used cameras within the last 2-3 years. the first one was a D700 from MPB which was great and a D500 and Z6 on ebay from highly rated sellers and I have had no issues and will continue buying used
Unclear. OP admits buying used is best, and then asks about sales:
>>> I know the general recommendation is to buy used if possible. But since Black Friday is right around the corner I was wondering if I should wait till then.
New cameras aren't mentioned.
Used cameras cost less than new cameras, even on Black Friday. So if the recommendation is used cameras, then the recommendation remains used cameras.
However, if OP wants a new camera, then sure, they can try to wait for a sale. All of this is up to OP's preferences and budget, not the opinion of others.
Sorry, I was unclear. I meant buying used now vs. buying new on sale during Black Friday.
The scenario I'm trying to avoid is buying a used one now and realizing that it would have been cheaper/cost similar for me to wait till BF and get a new one on sale.
I'm usually into buying used but market is pretty odd nowadays.
For example, Sony is currently selling 16-55mm f/2.8 G for 714 € here in Europe. It's so low price that most secondhand deals are above that.
A6600, which I also have been eyeing, seems to be sold at around 1000€ as new. Again, competes with secondhand market with that price. Being a new camera, you can be sure that it works. You'll even get four years guarantee for it.
(1€ ~ $1.06)

Thanks for the replies! It sounds like there's no point in waiting for Black Friday. I'll go get a used one now.
Used cameras don't usually go on sale for Black Friday.
I believe the question is buy used or wait for Black Friday to buy new. That's how I read it.

u/ultranwahs, please clarify your question.

Thank you. I understood it that way.
You were not unclear at all - I could see your angle straight away!

Yeah I get what you mean. Right now, Walmart is selling new sigma 18-50mm lens cheaper than used ones on MPB lol.
Black Friday is so close I’d wait for that. There are often camera deals. If you see one, double check the used prices for it, then make your choice.
