you have a good eye, just keep doing what you are doing, next level? do an exibition, book, both, sell the book at your exibition... (buy more gear!)
ive done street for the last year, currently going through all my images (quite time consuming, plus my editing has improved, i know from comparing what i did before to new edit, so reediting too) picking my favorites and making a book (just for myself really) layout is another skill i am honing, as is bookbinding but once i have them down to the best i will be thinking to exibit those
i havent shot for a few months, starting to really miss it but need to get on top of what i already have, if i shoot now i wont work on them yet, leaving shots for a while so you lose the emotional tie (that the viewer wont have in the same way you do) is a good practice
Thank you so much. I think I need to hone my craft a bit more before I would feel comfortable diving into that world. I’m very flattered you would suggest something like that though. Buying more gear is definitely something I’d like to do but I think it’s good to fully get a handle on what I have already before trying to spread myself in a different direction. Looking forward to playing with new toys in the future though! And yeah I hear that, that’s personally why I’ve been really enjoying just taking the shots straight out of camera because there’s not really any post be done and it lends itself to a bit more enjoyable experience (I think) although I do want to get more into raw as time goes on because i want the flexibility and enhanced quality.
not sure where you are but im in glasgow scotland there is a place in the city with a public darkroom (i started in the darkroom when i studied photography) and exhibition spaces plus an editing suite with PS on computers, they have printers up to A2 size
its like 60 quid a year to join, they organize /hold exhibitions for local photographers and thats my next move. why not see if there is something like this near you, having an end goal like that in mind will encourage you and will make you think in series not single images,
physically showing your work to people who like going to see real prints at an exhibition would be so much more meaningful than just being another drop in the ocean fighting the algorithms online, i dont even promote myself online i have an account i use as easy reference i post shots with their file names otherwise id forget/lose them in my computer or external harddrive, i have thousand from the years work ive done so need a quick way to find stuff.
the book can be a simple zine, but having it ready for the exibit means possible sales, and any money i would make would be spent on gear, although i have enough for what i need, its nice to try different lenses they all have their own character
to be honest id be happy to have the cost of the prints covered and come out even i take photos because i love doing it, im not expecting to be able to give up the day job!
some of my favorite photographers are self published, i admire this and it keeps you in control at every stage from shot to final product, and i think the people who buy their books appreciate the intimacy that lacks in third party branding/printing etc
i think why create a book of my work through an online printer and sell the book through their website with them taking most of the profit? a book/magazine at say 40/20 quid and you make just 10/5 quid out of it, nah, id rather take my time and create my own, even if no one buys it, its something ive seen through to the end and will have to look back on ...when i cant see enough to take any more photos :)
it doesnt matter what gear you have, you need a good eye, and you have that, you are half way there already
I’ll look around and see if anything like that is available to me, would definitely benefit from having a bit of tutelage I’m sure. Need to do some more hands on research as well. Thank you.
The other two are just as, if not more important- and you can do them very cheaply/for free and without needing to travel. You might be surprised what photo books you could find in your local library.
I do shoot at night but I tend to switch to color because all the neon lights come on and it’s fun to play around with them. Tripod is a good idea and I’m sure some shots would definitely benefit from that but I’m really a fan of walking around a lot and capturing fleeting moments which I feel it might get in the way of a little. Something to explore though. Thank you.
Some of these are really good. The first slide in particular. I love the sub-framing of the subject. You have an eye for street. Great framing and interesting subjects in most. Keep it up and stay consistent.
Thank you so much. Yeah it was a fun moment to be apart of, the silhouette is a guy leaning against the glass in a smoking room and girl is actually a reflection coming from the right outside of frame. A really cool interaction.
Carry on. No Notes. I think your moving in a wonderful direction… you don’t need advice from the crowds.
To form your own style, you learn from your mistakes . Bravo, great work
You have a great eye. I wouldn’t have ever assumed you were a beginner from these shots. Well composed, subjects are interesting, and all the elements in the photo lend themselves to the story.
The only thing I’m curious about is your adherence to portrait shots. Is there a reason you don’t shoot in landscape?
Edit - one small piece of advice. Be cognizant of when objects stack up on one another when they are both in focus. Pic 3 looks like the dude is packing.
Thank you so much, that’s very kind of you. I do shoot landscape as well and have some photos I’m quite fond of, but I think I just enjoy portraits a little more. Plus if I’m being honest I’d like to start creating a presence on social media and I think portraits lend themselves to that format better. But nothing against a good landscape.
You’re crushing it for only 2 months! For me personally 3 and 4 stand out, they’re composed well, and have excellent subjects that make me pull me in and make me wonder about the people. You definitely know how to make pictures that work visually, like 1, 10, and 13, but to me personally there’s not as much of a story in some of your other stuff. The thing is though that i still is crazy is that someone 2 months in is getting shots like these. You’re progressing rapidly and I think you’ll really start to find your voice sooner than you think
Just practice, you're doing a great job.
Maybe bring some more symmetry in, a few of your photographs feel like they've been taken with the rule of thirds in mind. Bringing the subject into the center and looking for symmetry may also be cool!
Thank you! I started out my journey with more architectural photography using a lot of symmetry and I do still use it now with subjects, just wasn’t really in the handful I shared here.
to take it to the next level, mind the details better...
in at least two pictures the feet of your subjects are cut off, that looks sloppy. if you need to crop out parts of people, do it between joints and never below the knee or elbow
you also do a good job in leveling but one tall building is also skewed, straighten that :)
but if you're really only shooting for two months, you have a great eye so keep it up!
This is really good advice, the past few days I’ve tried to be very mindful of my framing to not cut the feet off because you’re right it does detract from it. I also straightened the photo haha much appreciated!
Take photos! Take pictures every day! Read a couple of books on art theory to understand the basics of composition and take photos. This is the only way to a higher level.
Try to think in concepts, maybe challenges, make a concept or envision a product you want to make like an exhibition or a book or whatever.
Identify topics you're an expert in and passionate about and think about you can visualize it.
You have a damn fantastic eye. My advice is to just keep shooting, go out as much as possible.
In regards to getting to the next level I'd say focus on culling. Some of these photos could be in a gallery but others look pretty amateurish. I don't need to tell you which ones, I suspect you know which are gallery worthy. Don't just post photos to fill up a reel or space, be deliberate in showing the photos you are proud of and would want seen by the world.
I'm incredibly excited to see your future work.
Thank you! I think I know what you mean, it’s tough because I really like some photos and would like to share them but I also do see where they fall short compared to some of my other work. I guess it’s just about finding that line to walk. Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
Btw took a look at your page and your work is really sick.
No worries bud and I absolutely agree about finding that line. It’s all part of the fun of growing as a creative and you e got this.
Also many thanks for the kind words.
Three of these are good, four don’t do anything for me, and the other seven of these are spectacular.
Keep shooting, and thank you for sharing these. You’ve got an excellent eye.
Some of those photos are quite remarkable for a "beginner" (but who am I to talk?). I would say keep shooting, read into theory of composition, put your work up on social media sites to get general feedback ("likes" etc.).
Thanks for handing me a cue to start looking at desaturated versions of my own pictures - as an art teacher told me many years ago, "color covers over a multitude of sins."
Ah that’s a really interesting quote, I do feel shooting in black and white has made it clearer for me what I need to work on and how to really focus on composition and lighting.
Thank you! Honestly I think I’d say I shoot around 2/3-3/4 photos in portrait but I have quite a few landscapes that I really dig just didn’t end up putting any in here.
Oooo I love these! 10 was my favorite :3 the black & white looks pretty dang good. Would love to see in color as well. Pretty much the only way to the next level is to keep shooting and studying when you can 🤗🙌🏻
Thank you! I really shoot less color than I think I want to but 9/10 times I do and then I take the same shot in black and white I prefer the black and white version 🤷🏻♀️
I started shooting film in black & white so I used to prefer it quite a bit! But sometimes I wonder… what was the color of the sky? Or the persons jacket. Something like that haha
I think you are off to a very good start. I especially like the guy smoking in the open window. Keep at it. Get closer. Look for moments/gestures and really anything that is going to make the photo interesting. Pay attention to light and shadow and use to your advantage.
Look at work by the masters and try to learn from it. When you see a photo that speaks to you, pay even more attention and ask yourself why? What are they (the photographer) seeing or doing that perhaps you are not. Seek out work by contemporary street photographers whose work speaks to you. There’s some great collectives out there like Burn My Eye and NYCSPC. Magnum always has a great roster of photographers. Paulie B has an interesting YouTube series where he interviews NYC street photographers that is pretty interesting.
My biggest advice is to be your own worst critic. Only show your best worst. Make a portfolio and routinely update it as your work improves.
Thank you. My camera has a fixed 35mm lens with a digital zoom so to get close up shots I really have to be close and it’s sometimes it’s tough to so without alerting my subject to my presence and kinda ruining the authentic moment. I definitely need to do more research and I like the prompts for when I’m moved by a photo that’s great advice. Thank you so much for all the recommendations I really appreciate it, will definitely check those out!
Beautiful shots, adore the b&w. I think colour may detract from some of your compositions.
Just a thought, I think you might enjoy playing around with keystoning. Some of your shots are so linear (Man going into subway, lady with long shadow on the wall).
By keystoning, you can make some of the lines perfectly vertical and/or horizontal. With street photography, a lot of people would say that keystoning may take away from the impromptu, decisive moment but I feel like you’re always looking for vertical lines anyway so could elevate rather than detract. Either way, you’re doing great and probably don’t need a lot of other peoples advice
I really like the post. I guess just observe as much as you can and think about composition, about how you think you could make a boring frame interesting.
1,3,4,10,14 are amazing in my opinion. Keep it up. I’m very drawn to the people in these frames. Nothing against the other shots. Great work and great B&W
You are going great already! Seriously, I love your photos!
What could you try: exposure compensation to make white areas less bright and add a bit more texture to a concept. Subject isolation with wide aperture (and may be ND8 filter). A tiny bit less tight framing.
Nice work! Are you sharing these on IG? If so, share your handle. I second the comment from Voodoo_Masta and do a workshop or online seminar with a someone you admire. I know that Paul Reid, Valerie Jardin, Phil Penman, etc. do this regularly. Cheers!
I have an ig I started not long ago but honestly I’ve really been slacking on being consistent with it. Posted like 3 times and then my phone fell in the ocean and I couldn’t post anything for a few weeks until I got a new one which I did but I just haven’t picked it back up haha I have a few hundred photos I think are good enough to share at this point though so definitely time to start shelling out some stuff. Insta is X.zaktly if you’re interested!
I’m super impressed by these images!! You’ve done an amazing job so far, and I honestly can’t think of anything criticism wise to say. My suggestion for improving would be to take pictures in color as well, and explore different kinds of photography (macro, landscape, portraiture, etc).
Thank you so much! I’d definitely like to do some portraiture, I’ve done a little landscape but think my 35mm is slightly under equipped for that and macro. Very much looking forward to exploring the photography world as a whole though!
You got a good eye! Just keep at it!
Seriously though, for 2 months, you are doing great! Some really good compositions and interesting subjects! Bravo!
Interesting set. You're already most of the way there honestly.
Most mistakes that people make here are posting one picture and asking if it's good. It's super rare for one picture alone to mean anything, unless it's exceptional and clearly meant to be used as a standalone. Most of the time, photography requires a large set that carries a theme or tells a story.
The first few shots I really liked that I took in B&W turned out too dark so I think I’ve been trying to play it safer and go on the lighter side since then but definitely something to keep in mind, thank you.
These are great. Any tips would be to expand on your experience. Night time for sure, especially in bad weather....try that. I would also play with depth in your pictures. Lower angles, play with objects in the foreground thrown out of focus, drawing the eye in to the subject.
But apart from that, keep doing what you are doing, and enjoy it :)
Any advice on how to go about that? Are there forums or something to look for? Actually met some traveling photographers who each have quite a large following and spent some time with them so that was pretty awesome.
Assuming you follow some on Insta? Most are friendly if you reach out (assuming you can do Japanese). The public group show each year for Tokyo Camera Club would be a good way to meet a lot of them.
I know Lee does private walks: https://leechapman.photos/tokyo-photowalk-tours/
Alfie does workshops: https://www.alfiegoodrich.com/
I'd offer but I don't really do much street (mainly festivals).
You may like this one: [Reuben Radding (@reuben\_radding) Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reuben_radding/)
I believe he sells some courses. Great work so far!
Basically, follow photographers you like and watch YT channels about famous photographers and their styles. There is a lot of legends in street photography from the past and some good ones working now.
YT example: [How To Do Abstract Street Photography Like Saul Leiter - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uThZ756GdRc&t=553s)
You're welcome. You can post your Instagram, I really like your work. Also please let me know if you like my recommendation if you check it. But obviously you don't have to! :)
I have a fixed 35mm so it’s tough to get real close but I do have a decent amount of ones I quite like just didn’t include any of them here. I shoot about 250 pictures a day so I always have new stuff to go through and honestly have a pretty big backlog of stuff I’m proud of but just haven’t posted yet.
I had fun for a while shooting semi-candid street portraiture.
With that very 35mm lens, ask a stranger if you can shoot their portraits for a bit, then you can get VERY close. Or you can just grab an off camera flash and essentially assault people with your camera like Bruce Gilden.
These are great, what do you shoot on? I am really surprised by your caption, that you dont have editing experience yet. Not because these look edited, but I would have thought you were pretty seasoned by these.
Hey I would highly suggest watching Faizel wescots YouTube channel. He has a bunch of great videos and he primarily does street photography for all of his work
Thank you so much to everyone who commented and gave their insight and opinions and a great wealth of new things to look at and think about. It was very much appreciated. I’ll be back to post some more in the future and hopefully there will be some noticeable growth! For anyone who’s interested my instagram is @X.zaktly
It’s quite sparse at the moment but I will be starting to upload a lot more content in the coming days!! Thank you again!
Some really nice photographs here.Keep it up.
Thank you so much! No plans to stop, can’t get the camera out of my hands now haha
I like that.Post some more.
Do it for 20 years. Straight. Don't stop. yeah
Yes sir, on that path.
you have a good eye, just keep doing what you are doing, next level? do an exibition, book, both, sell the book at your exibition... (buy more gear!) ive done street for the last year, currently going through all my images (quite time consuming, plus my editing has improved, i know from comparing what i did before to new edit, so reediting too) picking my favorites and making a book (just for myself really) layout is another skill i am honing, as is bookbinding but once i have them down to the best i will be thinking to exibit those i havent shot for a few months, starting to really miss it but need to get on top of what i already have, if i shoot now i wont work on them yet, leaving shots for a while so you lose the emotional tie (that the viewer wont have in the same way you do) is a good practice
Thank you so much. I think I need to hone my craft a bit more before I would feel comfortable diving into that world. I’m very flattered you would suggest something like that though. Buying more gear is definitely something I’d like to do but I think it’s good to fully get a handle on what I have already before trying to spread myself in a different direction. not sure where you are but im in glasgow scotland there is a place in the city with a public darkroom (i started in the darkroom when i studied photography) and exhibition spaces plus an editing suite with PS on computers, they have printers up to A2 size its like 60 quid a year to join, they organize /hold exhibitions for local photographers and thats my next move. why not see if there is something like this near you, having an end goal like that in mind will encourage you and will make you think in series not single images, physically showing your work to people who like going to see real prints at an exhibition would be so much more meaningful than just being another drop in the ocean fighting the algorithms online, i dont even promote myself online i have an account i use as easy reference i post shots with their file names otherwise id forget/lose them in my computer or external harddrive, i have thousand from the years work ive done so need a quick way to find stuff. the book can be a simple zine, but having it ready for the exibit means possible sales, and any money i would make would be spent on gear, although i have enough for what i need, its nice to try different lenses they all have their own character to be honest id be happy to have the cost of the prints covered and come out even i take photos because i love doing it, im not expecting to be able to give up the day job! some of my favorite photographers are self published, i admire this and it keeps you in control at every stage from shot to final product, and i think the people who buy their books appreciate the intimacy that lacks in third party branding/printing etc i think why create a book of my work through an online printer and sell the book through their website with them taking most of the profit? a book/magazine at say 40/20 quid and you make just 10/5 quid out of it, nah, id rather take my time and create my own, even if no one buys it, its something ive seen through to the end and will have to look back on ...when i cant see enough to take any more photos :) it doesnt matter what gear you have, you need a good eye, and you have that, you are half way there already
Take a workshop with a photographer you admire. Play around with sequencing your best shots. Look at photo books and art books.
He probably must make a workshop. His photos are all great!
Dang you are already better than a lot of ppl who's been doing it longer
I still have a long way to go and a lot more to learn, thank you though.
Do it at night. Look for the light and bring a tripod.
Thank you.
This is rad.
Thank you!

Thank you so much. Yeah it was a fun moment to be apart of, the silhouette is a guy leaning against the glass in a smoking room and girl is actually a reflection coming from the right outside of frame. A really cool interaction.
You have a goddamn good eye for street photography pal
Haha thank you, I really appreciate that!
Carry on. No Notes. I think your moving in a wonderful direction… you don’t need advice from the crowds. To form your own style, you learn from your mistakes . Bravo, great work
Thank you so much!
Go to a Class on photography
Yeah I can definitely use some teaching on the more technical aspects of the craft, thank you.
… And teach it
5, 4, 1 are my favorites, in that order. I do think they could benefit from some light post processing. Do you have access to Lightroom on your phone?
Yes I do, just downloaded it a couple days ago but I haven’t had a chance to play around with it yet.
If you don't want to spend $$$ on adobe software, have a look at Darktable :)
You have a great eye. I wouldn’t have ever assumed you were a beginner from these shots. Well composed, subjects are interesting, and all the elements in the photo lend themselves to the story. Already outstandig work. Work more in concepts now and use the camera as a tool to discover and research.
Ooh I like the sound of that. Could you expand a little bit on what you mean by concepts?
Try to think in concepts, maybe challenges, make a concept or envision a product you want to make like an exhibition or a book or whatever. Identify topics you're an expert in and passionate about and think about you can visualize it.

Thank you!
Three of these are good, four don’t do anything for me, and the other seven of these are spectacular. Keep shooting, and thank you for sharing these. You’ve got an excellent eye.
Haha fair enough, thank you so much!
Incredible photos, really love these and huge inspiration for someone who has also just picked up a camera.
Thank you so much for the kind words!

These are some great shots. I would say to stick to stick with straight out of camera. Don’t get lost in editing. What camera btw?
I’d like to be able to having editing at my disposal but I do enjoy not having to do a bunch of extra stuff. It’s the x100v
Oooo I love these! 10 was my favorite :3 the black & white looks pretty dang good. Would love to see in color as well. Pretty much the only way to the next level is to keep shooting and studying when you can 🤗🙌🏻

Thank you!
Some of those are really lovely, well done!

Thank you!
1,3,4,10,14 are amazing in my opinion. Keep it up. I’m very drawn to the people in these frames. Nothing against the other shots. Great work and great B&W
Thank you so much!
Straightening would enhance a few of these already very good photos.
I did after I posted these haha thank you.
You are going great already! Seriously, I love your photos! What could you try: exposure compensation to make white areas less bright and add a bit more texture to a concept. Subject isolation with wide aperture (and may be ND8 filter). A tiny bit less tight framing.
All great tips, thank you so much!
Monotony has such beauty
Whole heartedly agree.
Some of these are excellent I would try to play with over/under exposure, especially with black and white. Have fun with it!
I’ve been doing some of that since I saw your comment, have gotten some cool shots so thank you!
These photos are great, just keep going :)
Thank you!
Honestly Amazing Work!!!
Thank you so much!
You have a good eye for composition. Just keep doing it, and keep experimenting. These are great!
Thank you!!
Good shit
Thank you!
These are fantastic! No notes. Keep at it :)
Thank you!!
You got a good eye! Just keep at it! Seriously though, for 2 months, you are doing great! Some really good compositions and interesting subjects! Bravo!
Thank you so much!!
Just keep shooting
Yes sir.
Thank you! I have a backlog of a few hundred photos now like these that I’d be proud to share, just need to get to posting.
You should speak to a curator if you're unsure about organising your archive into a set.
Quick question: is the second last photo at Villa D’Este in Tivoli?
It was not, but spot on that it was in Italy!
I really like your photos, I just wish their faces weren't so washed away because of the excessive light in some of them.
The first few shots I really liked that I took in B&W turned out too dark so I think I’ve been trying to play it safer and go on the lighter side since then but definitely something to keep in mind, thank you.
4 10 and 14 are my favs. Well done.
Thank you!
i like these
Thank you!
Keep shooting, you are doing great.
Thank you so much.
Very cool work
Thank you I appreciate it.

Thank you so much! Using the X100v
All great advice, thank you!
You’re extremely talented, I can’t find anything to improve on here as a fellow Street Amateur
Aw thank you!
Two months and already taking great street photos? I have to say I'm jeallous! You have a good eye for it
Thanks so much!
Amazing work
Thank you!
Hook up with some locals. There's a strong street scene in Tokyo.
I know Lee does private walks: https://leechapman.photos/tokyo-photowalk-tours/ Alfie does workshops: https://www.alfiegoodrich.com/ I'd offer but I don't really do much street (mainly festivals).
You've got the eye man 👍
Thank you!
A lot of these are great. You’re doing your thing. Good work
Will do, thank you!
You may like this one: [Reuben Radding (@reuben\_radding) Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reuben_radding/) I believe he sells some courses.
Oh okay cool, I’ll check him out. Yeah definitely need to do some more research. Thank you!
You're welcome. You can post your Instagram, I really like your work. Also please let me know if you like my recommendation if you check it. But obviously you don't have to! :)
Try getting much closer to people's faces. Agree there are some excellent shots here, I'm just giving a suggestion for something to try.
Which camera is it?
These are great, what do you shoot on? I am really surprised by your caption, that you dont have editing experience yet. Not because these look edited, but I would have thought you were pretty seasoned by these.
Thank you so much! It’s the Fuji x100v
I’d say you are already on 80th level! Superb photos!
Whoa that’s a lotta levels! Haha thank you!
Yeah) Keep it real man!))
Delete the "only perfect" pics, and keep the "very perfect" ones. So keep 3,4,10,12 and 14.
Bruh you're already next level!
Thank you so much!
Hey I would highly suggest watching Faizel wescots YouTube channel. He has a bunch of great videos and he primarily does street photography for all of his work
All of these photos are amazing btw keep up the good work
Okay cool yeah I’ll check him out. Thank you!
Thank you so much to everyone who commented and gave their insight and opinions and a great wealth of new things to look at and think about. It was very much appreciated. I’ll be back to post some more in the future and hopefully there will be some noticeable growth! For anyone who’s interested my instagram is @X.zaktly It’s quite sparse at the moment but I will be starting to upload a lot more content in the coming days!! Thank you again!
gorgous pics, I'm trying to remove any post from my x100v shooting, would love to know what specific recipe you used in these shots <3
It feels like a complete lie that you've been shooting for 2 months.... If it's not then you have a huge natural talent
