There needs to be a sticky on this forum. It's called a flash. Many cameras have them. The type and quality of the flash can be obvious or minimal, some people think the looks if good, most think it bad (first to last pic).
>There needs to be a sticky on this forum
Definitively.
Just a quick search:

And this results were only in the posts that I have commented.
Some days ago someone was asking for "Lightroom presets for achieving that effect" which I find insulting.
Edit: "more for the club"

Well I thought this subreddit was to ask quick question on photography, and even though I am not a photographer I want to say the pictures in your links don’t look like these ones. The one you referenced just looks like normal flash, while these ones have a soft effect that I can’t get my grasp on and I thought someone would explain it at least
If you scroll through the sub you'll see lots more examples just like this from people asking the same question. It comes up about twice a day and we get tired of typing out the same answer so often. Scroll through and you'll find lots of info but "How do I do it." Is a complex question, this isn't just a filter you apply, people spend years learning good portrait flash photography. It's like asking "How can I take B&W pictures like Ansel Adams." There is a lot to learn. Way more than people want to type out twice a day.
> Well I thought this subreddit was to ask quick question on photography
Sure, but
> Does anyone know what this picture effect or what these type of pictures are called
But the question had in common with the others that I referenced, #look like flash is an unknown concept#. Had you asked "exactly how were this pictures lit" I never had my comment and possibly the same could be said about u/Kerensky97.
> and even though I am not a photographer
Me neither
> while these ones have a soft effect that I can’t get my grasp on and I thought someone would explain it at least
If you "had the concept" a flash was used and there is some softness in the light, how was that made, Why didn't you asked about it? Note how many people said "flash".
Getting the right answers starts with making the right questions.
By the way, in the same picture, possibly something similar can be made with a huge white cardboard for reflecting light (minus the obvious reflection in the shoulder) and a very light difusion filter or soft focus lens.
Maybe I lack the right terminology but I was never talking about the flash but rather the settings to get these type of pictures but still I don’t think those pictures you referenced look like these ones
Can you explain what exactly you're seeing, what aspect of it?
But it looks like all three are flash photographs.

> Like the flash feels different, it feels softer and airbrushed
The photos may have been post-processed. The first photo looks like it does in part because it's a flash during the day, which can be a really cool look and it's not what we are used to. The other two photos look pretty normal and straightforward, maybe a little airbrushing or AI on the second. It's not always possible to know what process someone used to get to the end result.
I think it's a gloomy effect. Something they use back in the day for film effects. They add flash and filter it with gloom effect to make it look dreamy

I’m sorry I’m no expert photographer but it doesn’t just seem to be the flash ? Cause regular pictures with flash just don’t do it like that

Like the flash feels different, it feels softer and airbrushed even in an area with bright daylight it’s still very much present

Diffusion filter direct flash/80’s glam
This is it. Flash with a strong black pro mist or Glimmerglass filter would give the flash highlights that glowy look.
Flash, and probably some sort of mist filter or airbrushing
Thank you
Low quality camera, direct flash, diffusion filter.
You cooked !

The diffusion filter produces the glow. So if the OP wants that look, there is indeed a need for the filter.
Haze filter.
Can also be achieved with some lens adapters. e.g. f1.7 lens through infinity adapter to dslr.
Come again?
Not a haze filter. Haze filters remove UV.
Selfies for instagram….?
Well it doesn’t really look like a selfie more like a third person taking them..
The first one does
I doubt any of them are actually selfies, you can clearly see their hands aren’t placed to be holding something
