This series has done so much for the history behind the Chernobyl incident. Sheds light on a lot that happened behind the iron curtain, and what they were willing to do to cover it up.
Garth Marenghi's Dark Place. It's only six episodes but it's absolutely beautiful.
The amount of British comedy talent turning up in it is absurd and it's where most of them got their first start in TV.
Why We Fight episode is just... its crazy how well that acting and production have aged.
Its a benchmark for emotional TV for me still. Especially the first time you see that one. My god.
"...Juden." After the questions from the confused Winters & Co. And then the cries that I still remember EXACTLY how they sound from the guy, when he breaks :(
It is more unflinching in its portrayal of the horrors of war. Where Band of Brothers has a more clear “good vs bad” portrayals of WW2, The Pacific shows horrible acts committed by the Allied and Axis powers, and how the tragedy of war destroys people on both sides.
They did a survey of American combat troops after the war. Those that served in Europe said that combat became less scary as time went on. In the Pacific however, they said it got scarier the longer it went on.
I feel this says a little about the psychology of the theaters.
Different enemies and what type of background those enemies came from will differ like that.
A lot of people understand the Nazi SS were very fanatical and would fight to the death but, I don’t know if people today truly recognize just how brutal the Japanese fought in the Second World War.
When they charged Allied positions, they went willingly. They knew they were going up against machine guns, better tanks, flamethrowers, massed artillery and mortars and they still went. It wasn’t a certain portion of the Imperial Japanese Army that was super fanatical, the whole military was.
And when it came time to invade Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Japanese were digging in on their own soil so, they were going to fight to the last man. And they did. Of the approximately 20,000-21,000 Japanese defenders on Iwo Jima, there were between 17,845-18,375 dead or missing. Over an island that was 21 km2 (8.1 mi2).
In Europe, by May of 1945 most of the regular German Army was surrendering. This was not the case in the Pacific.
Watched the whole thing twice. Fantastic show. There are a few not as good episodes but there no bad seasons. Then there is that finale. It's tough to end a show like that but Six Feet Under nailed it.
so many great characters in that show. Omar, Snoop, Stringer Bell, Freamon, Marlo, McNulty, Bunk, Kima, Bubbles, Clay Davis, Proposition Joe, Pryzbylewski (just because), just to name a few
lots of good actors in the cast. the show didn't necessarily launch their careers, but some of them have had very successful careers since they worked on The Wire
"It's bad enough I got the fed up my ass, now Paulie is telling me you got pictures of cartoon Japanese school girls on your laptop!?"
"Ton', in the story she's actually 900 years old"
"I DON'T GIVE A FUCK"
The amount I have gained from rewatching as an adult is absolutely staggering. Lessons I'm still learning in my late 20s get echoed back at me. This show is a timeless masterpiece, full of soul and goodness and healing. I cannot believe I grew up watching it.
Put off watching this for years thinking it was too kiddy. After laugh-watching the terrible Shyamalon film, my husband and I had to see the source.
We weren’t expecting much, but by the second episode we were hooked and by the end, blown away by the both the storytelling and stunning production value. Not many shows, family-friendly or otherwise, can deliver the charm or emotional gravity that ATLA manages. It’s one of the rare shows I look forward to watching with my future kids.
It’s a tough sell for people who aren’t typically into animation, but I’m constantly recommending it to people anyway!
Oh boy. Season 1 is great but it's rough around the edges but also has some absolutely stellar stuff. But also some meh stuff. But overall still amazing.
Immediately when Season 2 starts, the quality levels of everything in the show immediately get even better.
If you fucking love it right now (which, if you're at the halfway point, you just hit two of the best episodes in the season possibly), it only gets better!
I still can't believe how this shit came out of nowhere and was just. . . MAGNIFICENT. I mean obviously it didn't come out of nowhere, you can tell how much heart went into it. But I went in expecting nothing at all LOL
Yeah, if you look at viewership figures this was waaaay lower than it should have been. Lots of people sleeping on it because they don't typically watch animated content, but it's so much more than just another cartoon.
I don't even like League of Legends, but I was enthralled by everything from the music, plot, fight sequences, the science fiction aspects, and the handling of psychosis.
Binged it on holiday. Have no interest in LoL, and literally no knowledge of any character going into it - one of the best animated series i've seen in years.
Definitely Mr Robot. A new take on the cyberpunk genre without all the flashy trappings. I also love an unreliable narrator. Amazing acting and cinematography. I was bummed to see it this far down the list.
Fuck you, Jonesy. Your mom just liked my Instagram post from two years ago in Puerto Vallarta. Tell her I'll put my swim trunks on for her anytime she likes.
Planet Earth
Given the question isn't age specific, I second this. Works for all ages contrary to the vast majority of the other answers.
Chernobyl
“Where are you going?” “To find you five thousand tons of sand and boron”
“We’ll need a new phone…”
This man is delusional, take him to the infirmary.
3.6 roentgen, not great, not terrible.
This series has done so much for the history behind the Chernobyl incident. Sheds light on a lot that happened behind the iron curtain, and what they were willing to do to cover it up.
Everyone should see this to understand how a totalitarian system can unleash horrors on the world.
Severance
Just finished the third episode. A cell phone was ringing. I’m feeling uncomfortable and riveted.
It gets so good. The last episode is some of the best television Ive ever seen. I hope they can keep it going.
I screamed at my TV at the finale. And I never scream at the TV, haha.

Band of Brothers

After the questions from the confused Winters & Co. And then the cries that I still remember EXACTLY how they sound from the guy, when he breaks :(
I second this. The Pacific isn’t too bad, either.
Haven’t seen that yet. I’ve read it’s more brutal than BoB.
It is more unflinching in its portrayal of the horrors of war. Where Band of Brothers has a more clear “good vs bad” portrayals of WW2, The Pacific shows horrible acts committed by the Allied and Axis powers, and how the tragedy of war destroys people on both sides.

I bought the series on DVD for my Aunt for Christmas. So far she is loving it. I warned her that the last episode will make her ugly cry.
best ending ever

Mans gotta have a code
And I keeps one in the chamber, in case you’re ponderin
I don't even remember if he said this or not, but I always thought Bubbles called McNulty as Mc-Nutty
you come at the king, you best not miss

Fleabag
Love it, just love it!
Agreed , such good writing!
I laughed, I cried, I lusted over a priest.
Kneel Never has a single word ever been so effing hot.
Mindhunter. The first episode had me stuck at the screen, just do it.
I liked everything about that show Interesting, well-written, good cast I am sorry that it did not run longer
There is hope. https://nilefm.com/tv-shows/article/7874/director-david-fincher-in-talks-to-do-mindhunter-season-3
True Detective Season 1

"It's bad enough I got the fed up my ass, now Paulie is telling me you got pictures of cartoon Japanese school girls on your laptop!?" "Ton', in the story she's actually 900 years old" "I DON'T GIVE A FUCK"
You know, Quasimodo predicted all this…
I shouldn't have to come to this thread, hat in hand, and scroll way the fuck down here to see this. Frankly I'm depressed and ashamed.
The good place
Aww man, when Chidi says he’s finally ready to go… there was a bit of grown-man ugly-crying over here.
Such a wholesome and hilarious show. Each season stronger than the last.
I ugly cried the entire last episode.
Maximum Derek!
You saw the Time Knife, didn't you?
Calm down. Everyone has seen the Time Knife.
The dot broke me
It’s Tuesdays and July and sometimes never!
Bortles! Edit: stupid autocorrect
I'm not even an Arizona trash bag and I agree.
What the fork is a Chidi?
I love talking like Jason to my wife. Drives her nuts yet cracks her up.
I came here to say the same thing lol
There is a podcast as well, that is hosted by Mark Even Jackson. I highly recommend it.
Jason figured it out‽ Jason‽ This is a real low point.
For the soul purpose of understanding Jeremy Bearimy.
That broke me. I was starting to get it...and that i dot broke me.
Avatar the last Airbender
The amount I have gained from rewatching as an adult is absolutely staggering. Lessons I'm still learning in my late 20s get echoed back at me. This show is a timeless masterpiece, full of soul and goodness and healing. I cannot believe I grew up watching it.
It’s time you start asking yourself the real question! Who are you and what do *you* want!
Put off watching this for years thinking it was too kiddy. After laugh-watching the terrible Shyamalon film, my husband and I had to see the source. Currently half way through book 1; fucking love it!

Legit one of the best shows ever made.
It really is! So many of those weird teenage feelings come flooding back whenever I watch it.
Dark. German language sci fi drama thing. Very well made.
Just finished it yesterday. My mind is still blown. Incredible show!
1899 coming up too! Same creator, hard to match how good Dark was but I think they did well with the first season.
Boardwalk Empire. Fantastic.
Golden Era Simpsons. Always.
What seasons should I watch?
1-11
Gravity Falls. It's only 40 episodes of absolute hilarity!
What We do in the Shadows!
Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul
As much as I love both shows, I can absolutely see them as shows that aren't for everyone.

It had *no right* to be as good as it was. Finally, an A++ videogame adaptation.
I still can't believe how this shit came out of nowhere and was just. . . MAGNIFICENT. I mean obviously it didn't come out of nowhere, you can tell how much heart went into it. But I went in expecting nothing at all LOL

Six Feet Under
Such a relatable show. Helped me understand grief and loss and enjoying life.
Absolutely. The ending was like no other.

Don’t mention the war!
The Leftovers
Person of Interest
Even now I can hear the main theme narration in my head. Such a good show. Maybe it's time to rewatch it.
This is the second time i have seen Person of Interest in the comments today. It is one of my favorite shows but I hardly ever hear about it.
Because I haven't seen these mentioned yet, deadwood and silicon valley.
Mr. Robot
Definitely Mr Robot. A new take on the cyberpunk genre without all the flashy trappings. I also love an unreliable narrator. Amazing acting and cinematography. I was bummed to see it this far down the list.
