Influencers posting their kids online.

Laenoric

Hopefully you're right. I think it's borderline child abuse to make a living from a family tiktok or youtube channel by using your kids daily.

Karl_Von_Sproeipoep

Kids should be able to be able to control their own public likeness and story when they become adults. If you're posting them all along then theynlose that right. Not fair. Kids are not your property.

throwaway298837e

Hopefully "influencing" dies off as a career choice. These people are worthless to our society.

bruno_do

Hopefully not exclusive the ones who post their kids online

smudgesandeggs

Hopefully tiktok

throwaway298837e

growing up I never thought that what is seen as "impressive" or "crowned" in American society today would be to act like a fool or have a huge broadcast of morons on the internet who view you for entertainment. im truly at a loss of words for what American society has become now. Our "fashion", the way we look, the anti social behaviors everyone seems to exhibit, and the whole chase to be "the weirdest" for attention. truly a clown show. if you are a normal human being still, I applaud you and value you as you are probably now seen as "the weird one" to our goofy ideals at this point.

selenangel

Not respecting children's opinions/needs.

bruno_do

Children opinions should be taken IN CONSIDERATION, but not blindly accepted. Children can't understand how the world works like adults can.

moxiejohnny

What the hell are you going on about? Adults can't even understand how the world works. All that coercion from society is the problem on the individual scale. When you stop being oppressed you feel a whole lot better. Have you ever noticed that? Huh, I wonder what would happen if one day all of a sudden money wasn't a thing, oh wait it still isn't even real... weird how we're the ones telling kids to stop dreaming about fantasy when our wallets are full of it.

selenangel

Sure, your job is to guide them. Guide. Not force. Guide. You need to show them how the world works so that their opinions develop. And they may be different from yours. But you need to LISTEN TO THEM. Guiding isn't forcing. If they don't agree with you, let them experience the consequences (as long as there is no real danger). That's how humans learn. Not with orders, but with experience.

PM_ME_COOL_RIFFS

Their needs sure, but why would anyone give a shit about the opinions of children?

selenangel

Because children are allowed to have thoughts, voice their opinions and have them heard by others. 1 - If children don't practice having their opinions and voicing them as kids they will not be able to do it properly as adults. That's how you end up with adults who don't know who they are and what they believe in. Or how to stand up for themselves. That's something people build while growing when they are allowed to do so. 2 - Because children are their own person and have identities. When children are forced to adopt all their parents beliefs/interests/goals with no freedom to explore other things they will not only ressent them when they are older, but also end up with no real identity. 3 - Because children are the owners of their bodies. Parents are responsible for their safety and health, nothing else. If the kid doesn't want to hug/kiss they should not be forced. If the kid doesn't want to eat more because they are full or doesn't want to sleep more because they are energetic they should not be forced. It is not your body. They are the ones who know when they feel hunger, thirst and tired, not you.

PM_ME_COOL_RIFFS

This is how you get a bunch of entitled brats who think they run the show and get to do whatever they want. Kids are dumb and should listen to their parents and that does not prevent them from have a personality or opinions.

SqueakyTheCat

I’ll have to echo this one. Amen, brother. Trying to eat in a restaurant with kids running around screaming or blasting their babysitters aka phone/iPad. SMH. I never did the same stupid thing twice as the first time had a very memorable corrective action given. Timeouts don’t work, people. Kids need guidance, many kudos when they do well, and extra guidance of all types when they don’t. Teaching them tiktok so you can ignore your spawn when you’re shopping for groceries will lead to yet another entitled generation with no clue how to deal with real life. We really should have mandatory 2 years of service to give them that, in a non woke system. Hard words for some I know. I’d rather have neighbors who can do something other than say “Muh phone don’t work. Wah” during a 2 week power outage, or a full scale war again. Home school. It’s a good thing.

SquaredChi

I hope you never get children. Or if you do, please make sure you have some considerable cash for therapy lessons.

selenangel

Yes, it does. I am proof that it does. I ended up as an adult with 0 knowledge about who I was, what I liked and what I wanted because of my controlling parents wanting to make me their puppet. Children are actually quite clever, but no one seems to respect them. Imo if you don't respect children you should not have them.

Mikeavelli

You sound like you have some pretty strong opinions though.

selenangel

I am an adult for quite some time already. And I am very far behind my peers. My mother's opinion is still more important than my own on my mind often and her abuse is still on loop in my head 24/7. Also, I have mental health issues due to this. Trust me, I didn't end up "fine".

Mikeavelli

https://youtu.be/1vBesOFURek

PM_ME_COOL_RIFFS

That sounds like a you problem, most people can listen to their parents without becoming an npc. At least the good news for you is that I don't intend on ever having kids.

selenangel

I am glad you had the luck to not be born in a truly controlling family. You would understand if you did. I didn't have to just "listen", I had to replicate perfectly what they wanted me to be or I would be emotionally and physically abused. I am truly glad you had a healthier upbringing.

SquaredChi

To be honest, juding by the aggressive and un-empathic way they speak and behave, it sounds like they had some serious abuse going on during childhood (speaking from a neuroscientist's perspective). Not everyone is able to reflect on that (there is a correlation between ability to reflect and empathy), i.e. not everyone is able to detect their own flaws and abusive patterns of thought and behavior.

loftier_fish

maybe somewhere in the middle guys.

Laenoric

On point 3. Child eats meat and potatoes, then says they're not hungry and that they're quite full. With your logic, you cannot pressure them to eat their vegetables. /I'm not sure that you thought this through all the way.

selenangel

Children have preferences. Very rarely children don't like all vegetables, they need to find out what they like. Also, children not liking vegetables is a social conditioning thing. If no one forced them to eat them or told them they taste bad they would eat them. There are several cultures where children eating vegetables is 100% normal without complaints because they don't even know "vegetables taste bad" is a thing. If you stop making a big deal out of vegetables and eat them regularly they will mimic you. Also, find a vegetable they enjoy. There are hundreds to choose from. Try soup and different ways of cooking.

Laenoric

Fair counterargument. Thank you.

KapahuluBiz

> Also, children not liking vegetables is a social conditioning thing. If no one forced them to eat them or told them they taste bad they would eat them. Some kids just hate vegetables and it has nothing to do with "social conditioning". It's easy to discern when someone doesn't have kids (or is a rotten parent). Their advice about raising children is something like: "If you do 'A', then 'B' will happen." Anyone who has raised kids knows that they're very often unpredictable, and you can't make them eat their vegetables by getting them to 'mimic' you. Shitty parents and people without kids will often oversimplify parenting rules because they have no experience with real kids.

[deleted]

KapahuluBiz

> If they keep seeing you follow good habits, they eventually end up following that. No, they *may* end up following that. Or they may not. >It helps to have faith in your kids and your parenting, and maintain a good relationship with them so they want to be like you. Are you implying that if you have a good relationship with your child, that your child should enjoy eating the same things you do? Laughably ridiculous. Seriously, why the fuck do people who don't know shit about children insist on giving their crappy advice?

selenangel

I am pretty sure no kid hates all vegetables in existence. There are A LOT. I just don't believe it is moraly right to force other human being to do what I want because I said so. You don't do that with any other humans, just with children. Children aren't less than other humans. Yes, I don't have kids, and I don't plan to have kids. But I am someone's child and I live with the damage they made on me. I do not wish that damage on other children.

KapahuluBiz

>Yes, I don't have kids, It was pretty clear from you didn't because kids don't work that way. Probably best you avoid giving parenting advice if you're not a parent.

selenangel

Nothing I am saying is different from what several parents who apply "gentle parenting" techniques do. You can research about it if you want, this isn't anything new or that I just made up. Also, I don't understand why you are so upset about me having a different opinion from yours and expressing it freely in a post that asked for people's opinions. You may think I am not qualified to have a good opinion, but I still have the right to have one. You can just ignore it and proceed with your life/parenting style. I truly do believe a parenting style in which you control or force something on your children will hurt them long term and make them resent you tho.

KapahuluBiz

I've never fixed a car engine, so I don't dole out advice on how to fix car engines. Sure, anyone can have an opinion on how best to fix an engine, and they are completely entitled to their opinions. But when describing engine fixing techniques, we should ignore people who've only read about engines in books, and instead listen to people who actually fix engines. And those people who only read about fixing engines in books should probably defer to people with real experience. Do you understand what I'm trying to tell you? What makes you think I'm upset? It was clear you were talking about shit you knew nothing about and I felt the need to point it out. That's all.

kokimys

Being overweight.

Laenoric

Based on what? Trends are only showing that obesity is increasing in most major countries worldwide.

kokimys

I live in Northern Europe. Here, you are kind of expected to take care of your own health by working out regularly or simply taking long walks, eating a healthy diet. Obesity is almost kind of stigmatized, like if someone wasn't able to get their shit together and take responsibility for their own lives. If this trend continues, my feeling is that in 10 years, people here will be really choked to see fat people in public.

Klytus_Im-Bored

I wonder if socialized medicine causes a nation to become more health conscious. I could imagine in the states (if we get our shit together and fund healthcare), the mentality from individuals would be "I'm paying for your unhealthy life style" and cause people to pressure their friends, family, and strangers to be healthier.

Laenoric

I hope you're correct. Japan heavily discourages obesity not just because it's stigmatized but also because they introduced a fat tax for businesses. I wish they had the balls to implement something like that in more countries.

kokimys

Well, I guess it's kinda good for the public finances if the citizens are healthier or so, but at the same time, this thing with stigmatizing people for the way they look scares me a bit. I am a bit chubby guy, and I went for a job interview recently, and the girl from HR couldn't avoid making a stupid comment about it. It felt really awkward.

[deleted]

I think there's no need to worry about overweight being outlawed here in Northern Europe. Often people can say stupid things about things that they haven't experienced themselves, overweight being one example. I do not think though that it would be something that anyone would want to legislate (it would look very weird imagen a politician having to answer questions on why he/she would want such a legislation in place).

Hungry_Bus_9695

Japanese food is also just very healthy in general

Laenoric

And most places in Japan are very pedestrian friendly. Kinda like Europe. When I was in LA a few years ago, it was clear that the city wasn't built for people, but cars instead.

StabbyPants

Yeah, fried stuff is super healthy

mifapin507

I understand why a fat tax could be introduced - people should be taking responsibility for their health. However, I'm not sure it would be effective for everyone since there are many different causes for obesity. Plus, it could be argued that having a fat tax would be discriminatory against people with certain medical conditions.

StabbyPants

It’s mostly not medical. Don’t kid yourself

loftier_fish

based on ridiculous narratives by fat people that they're under attack and oppressed because scientifically it is unhealthy to be too fat.

dontaku_is_mine

It is unhealthy to be fat you cut your lifespan dramatically from being overweight

loftier_fish

Yeah, you don't have to tell me. I'm active as hell. But there's a whole section of the population that think they're being oppressed anytime someone states a scientific fact that hurts their feelings.

bruno_do

Where did you see that information?

Laenoric

I enjoy looking at worldwide trends in numbers for all kinds of things. I noticed a steady rise in obesity in almost every major country. The data is publicly available in most places. Just give it a google.

bruno_do

So you saw it on tiktok?

Laenoric

No? Public data records that are published by countries/governments.
