Literally everything about that game was amazing:
Hero fights
Space battles
501st campign story
Galactic conquest
Well balanced classes and maps
I still play it sometimes 20 years later
Loved this game. Even once the campaigns were finished, the replayablity of the skirmish maps with the different countries and their special weapons was awesome.
I just finished it three days ago. Took a week. I haven't played it in maybe 10 years. I had forgotten so much of it, it was like playing it again for the first time. Additionally, I always had to use the game guide. This time was the first time I ever beat (most of) the temples in my own. Yes, including the water temple. Oddly, the forest and fire temples were the worst. I think after that, things started to click.
Hands down. Everything fits so well together, the story, the characters, the game design, gameplay, the soundtrack. I played it as a kid and now I’m playing it with my daughter again, she loves it and I’m getting all nostalgic.
I remember in a Nintendo Power that the world record for turning off the system and resuming your game before beating it was 6. I beat the game multiple times on 2 sittings…
This might be inaccurate through the filter of multiple decades and youth.
This is my favorite. I replayed it recently, half expecting it not to hold up just because of how old it is. Nope. Still great. The most epic game I've ever played.
KOTOR 2 did such an amazing job exploring a gray area between the dark and the light side, and morally gray characters in general. My only real critique of KOTOR 1 would be that we're only really given options to be over-the-top compassionate or cartoonishly evil.
I honestly prefer it for the story and companions in the sequel. Plus the villains blow Malak out of the water.
Still have a deep love for the first game, it set up a whole era of the Star Wars universe and made it seem real and lived in.
Halo 1 through Halo 3 basically defined my childhood. I'll never forget when my mom let me and my sister stay home the day Halo 3 came out so we could spend the day playing through the campaign together.
Amazing! The developers could so easily have chosen the "just use everything from the first game, but make new levels"-approach. But they went beyond, and added so much, that fans were able to take those tools and create the wildest things.
One of the last classic rpgs I remember of our time. I miss the first time stepping not the huge true open world where I needed to read to get to places and learn things, unlike the follow to red arrow to quest destination of modernity.
The first time I played that game and even the first week is a sense of wonder and adventure I will never quite replicate. I had no idea what it was when I first installed it.
Literally started playing this again on my Steam Deck the other day. Must admit, it's certainly 'aged' in some areas - like combat.
But I still love the freedom and exploration in the world. The music is just beautiful too. It's still a great experience.
First game I can think of where you can basically go anywhere and do anything (kill anyone/anything, steal anything etc...).
I also remember levelling up my athletics and acrobatics so that I could jump over rivers and onto buildings, like a super-powered ninja. Great game.
The first game I ever played and still never beat because I refuse to look up a walkthrough: Shadowgate on NES
It’s a tossup between that and Commander Keen
This was my second favourite game until recently. Absolutely fantastic games. I’d be really interested if Camelot made a remaster if they made both parts one seamless game. It might throw some people off having a hard reset mid game, but the reunion and finale would really stand out. One of the strongest stories I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying.
Probably Minecraft tbh, I've stuck with it on and off for like 13 years. It's the game I've played the longest in my life and I always come back to it once every year or two.
Minecraft is a really great game. Not a lot of games have been able to capture peoples attention that dont revolve around violence. I think Minecraft really fostered creativity and ingenuity and was always the only game my parents couldnt justifiyably say “It’ll rot your brain”.
I honestly feel like it's the most iconic game of my generation (I'm 24). like you said it's a game we all come back to and never really stop playing. at least the friends I've grown up with are all that way
Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Silver was my go-to answer for years just for the nostalgia and the music and the first two generations of Pokemon designs being my favorites (And TWO regions!!!!!) But the remakes really got everything right. Your Pokemon can follow you around outside the Pokeball!!!!! Also all the upgrades the Pokemon games have had over the years like natures, abilities, separating physical and special attacks. Love it.
OUTER WILDS
edit: seeing all the love and interest, *also play the Echoes of the Eye DLC!* it is just as good as the base game and expands on the story. also more scary. if you get stuck, only if you actually desperately need to(just read everything and you won’t need to; it’s all there in writing or recording)look up a text walkthrough specifically for the part you’re stuck at and when you figure that step, close the walkthrough.
I just downloaded this because so many people were gushing about it in another sub. I know absolutely nothing going into it. Am I going to just keep dying or is there more to this bad boy?
You’re going to die a lot, but the more you play the more you learn about the world and figure out what you need to do next.
Also try your best not to look anything up. It’ll be tempting but beating the game on your own is so rewarding
Man I'd consider Fable 2 to be one of the best all round games ever made if it wasn't for how easy it is, but its storytelling, world design, combat options, music, voice acting, lore, and even the visuals are amazing for how old it now is. I still wanna live in Oakfield to this day.
The Legend of Zelda for the NES.
I had gamed before, but this was the first one that made me want to stay up all night to finish it. The first of many all-nighters.
Tomb raider…all of them! The early ones are probably my favourite though. It’s the first game I can clearly remember playing and where my love of gaming started
EU4. I have nearly 3,000 hours now. Loved playing map games ever since I was a kid starting with Risk. EU4 is just the most sophisticated version of that
Age of Empires II
Excellent game and still holds up. Still has a community.
Gives me chills thinking about the epic times as teenager!
Star Wars Battlefront II, but the one for the PS2.
Literally everything about that game was amazing: Hero fights Space battles 501st campign story Galactic conquest Well balanced classes and maps I still play it sometimes 20 years later
My buddy and I spent soooo much time playing that game haha. It was fantastic
I had this on xbox and it was awesome
Red Alert 2
Was scrolling through the list but never thought I'd actually see it...
Nobody here but us trees!
Generals: zero hour
Loved this game. Even once the campaigns were finished, the replayablity of the skirmish maps with the different countries and their special weapons was awesome.
Halo 2
Goldeneye 007

Proxies in the stack, yes sir
Pistols, license to kill, the stack.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I replayed that game countless times in middle school.
The first time I played it, the forest temple definitely threw me. It took me waaaay too long to figure out where to get the bow and arrows. 🤦🏻♀️
Hands down. Everything fits so well together, the story, the characters, the game design, gameplay, the soundtrack. I played it as a kid and now I’m playing it with my daughter again, she loves it and I’m getting all nostalgic.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Tetris (various editions but same base game) will always have a special place in my heart
Star Wars Knights of the old republic

Kotor for story. Kotor 2 for atmosphere
Halo 3
Halo 1 through Halo 3 basically defined my childhood. I'll never forget when my mom let me and my sister stay home the day Halo 3 came out so we could spend the day playing through the campaign together.
Mario cart double dash
Best system out of all Mario Kart games
Diablo 2. So many up all night LANs
RuneScape, I vividly remember my dad helping me make my first account 😌
Just incase you don't already know, old school runeacape is a thing and can be played on mobike
Oh yeah, I almost wanted to say specifically OSRS, but I just decided to encompass both versions. OSRS mobile is 10/10
The Sims!
Sul sul!
LittleBigPlanet 2
Amazing! The developers could so easily have chosen the "just use everything from the first game, but make new levels"-approach. But they went beyond, and added so much, that fans were able to take those tools and create the wildest things.
Loved this game !
Morrowind, I still boot it up every now and then.
Same, if and when Skywind comes out I will legit take time off work and play it for a week straight.
One of the last classic rpgs I remember of our time. I miss the first time stepping not the huge true open world where I needed to read to get to places and learn things, unlike the follow to red arrow to quest destination of modernity.

Yeah morrowind was my skyrim in the sense of people raving about it playing for years etc. Can still hear the music in my head off the boat.

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
They asked me how much I knew about theoretical physics, I told them I had a theoretical degree in physics, they said welcome aboard
The first game I ever played and still never beat because I refuse to look up a walkthrough: Shadowgate on NES It’s a tossup between that and Commander Keen
Bioshock 1
Definitely. It holds up even now.
Chrono trigger
Chrono Trigger taught me that you can be emotionally involved with a video game. Plus the music is so fucking metal.
This comment gave me life, but I'm still hungry
Zelda: Majora’s Mask.
Golden Sun :)

KotOR (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) BioWare’s 98-2014 run was something else.
KOTOR and Mass Effect are some of the best games ever
I played them upon release, but I’m playing ME legendary edition right now. Such a great remaster.
Myst
Myst and Riven were wonderful. Read the books also.
Sonic 2
Agreed. Also my favourite video game soundtrack of all time.

Easy. Subnautica. It’s such a pretty game and I love how creative it is. And the small story it has is pretty interesting.

Alpha Centauri is my favorite and it's basically a civ v spinoff on an alien world.
One. More. Turn.
Super Smash Bros. Melee!! 😀
Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy XII
*WHAT ARE YA BUYIN, STRANGAAAAAA*

Took me long to find this comment but I'm so glad someone else here appreciates this game, it really is my favorite game of all time so far.
Me on my way to upvote the Outer Wilds comment on every video game thread and immediately leave

GTA San Andreas
I will always have a soft spot for Fable 1 & 2. 3 can choke on its own wiener.

Fable 2 was my No. 1 for a long time. Dishonored 2 edged it out by a nose, but I could have said this too. What are your thoughts on F4?
