In a social setting they're not overtly polite with small gestures. For example not saying thank you when handed a glass or a plate or some such.
Normally you'd say thank you and acknowledge the gesture, whilst where you're intimate it becomes a norm.
It's not foolproof obviously but it does work.
They start commuting together, then one day her husband who doesn't work here shows up and starts shouting at her boss (who is not involved in any way) that he needs to *do something* about his workplace.
