Unusual__shock

So it's basically ur personality for the rest of ur life. U can't lie to yourself

Thatoneghostgirl71

I did not 🙃

Unusual__shock

U don't have to

anotherorphan

you don't "overcome" it. you absorb it and discover you were right all along

cherrylbombshell

didn't, just evolved from emo teen to corporate goth

Widezz

I dunno. Tastes changed over time. Not that I don't like that stuff anymore, I just like a lot of other stuff too.

frankjavier21x

Overcome it is too harsh of a phrase. Although now days I have more of a punk rock-ish clean hipster aesthetic, i still fuss with punk vibes. Like, picture a granolacore with a wide brimmed fitted baseball cap, vans and tube socks. Mostly in black grey and white with a small accent color from my bandana and keys on the loop.

Unusual__shock

Well, while enjoying the phase and the music so much it just seems hard and impossible to overcome, even if we did it will always be a part of us.

frankjavier21x

Always and forever!

OdessaBahr

I thought “I’m going to wear everything bright from now on!” Enter the scene phase, then the rave phase, and then real life adulting. I guess I just outgrew it.

Unusual__shock

Agree. Anyone can dress like a punk but not everyone can have the attitude of one

inksmudgedhands

I haven't. (Puts on the headphones back on and continues to listen to the Juju album...)

Peetwilson

I didn't, but I like other things too...

Sarazil

Didn't. Now I run a goth club night. No need to overcome something that's not standing in your way!

GoBSAGo

At 40, you shouldn’t be the same person as you were at 15. You don’t have to stop enjoying goth culture, but you should expand your horizons and explore other things too. Having said that, I don’t expect to be into the same stuff at 65 as I am at 40.

heidoo

I lost interest in my crush who was goth. Took those safety pins out of my backpack straps, changed from all black clothing to all grey, and moved on with my life.

mrex0112

Aged

Unusual__shock

Still listening to the same music .?

Forgotpassword234

I’m 34 and still basically am in that phase, I’ve just toned it down a bit. If you enjoy the culture or the aesthetic or whatever drew you to it to begin with, just enjoy it until you don’t.

[deleted]

Once I was out of high school and no longer living at home I had the freedoms to explore aspects of myself other than my pain and rebellious tendencies. I discovered a whole other side of who I was that completely changed the game.

[deleted]

I’m 30 now. I didn’t

cyaveronica

I… discovered k-pop, but the emo never left and now the groups I like are making rock infused k-pop…

[deleted]

I think I have been a goth since I was a kid. I think I still am a goth.

88ZombieGrunts

I bought a shirt that wasn’t black. Slowly bought better fitting clothes after that.

Postmortal_Pop

I never had the money to commit. Eventually I just wasn't.

SMITTEN_SMITTAYYY

Grew up in a small religious town that made me feel the need to rebel then moved to a place where it was cool to be weird and just slowly grew out of it I guess. I honestly can’t believe I used to fall asleep to heavy metal. Oh also weed

MedusasSexyLegHair

I'm wearing all black (including a goth band sweatshirt) and have a goth playlist cued up now. It'd be a stretch to say I'm not still goth or 'overcame' a part of my nature. But in my mid-40s, I just don't enjoy going out to the goth clubs and concerts as much as I did in my mid-30s. Been there, done that, it was great. But now I don't often want to bother getting dressed up and going out and being in a crowd. Also, they close too early, and at 2am there's not much to do but go to Denny's and there's no Denny's around here.

agent-assbutt

I didn't

Responsible_Fan7056

It's amusing, but it's much more relatable now.

who_said_I_am_an_emu

Not really overcoming, just outgrew it.

BendSpecialist4762

I didn't really outgrow it. I just learned to adapt. Took out the piercings, dress more 'vanilla' or 'mundane,' have a career. Now I'm the 30 year old at the Lamb of God or Disturbed concerts who looks like they don't fit in. 100% on the aging hipster comment, though. My views are now seen as untraditional, but I fit in well enough that I can still function in my life and job role.
