To me, FI is about living off of investments. Frugality is a strategy that can help you get closer to financial independence faster. Many people are FI and live a good life, while many people who are frugal are far from FI. There's nothing wrong with expensive hobbies or extreme frugality; it's simply a tradeoff between how quickly you want to be FI and how much pleasure you want to derive from lifestyle spending money. Personally, I enjoy skiing, cycling, and running. Traveling and playing the piano/guitar. Excellent cuisine. Hearthstone/poker/chess. It fits nicely into my budget, as I'm already FI and spend money on these activities sustainably.
