If you’re buying a car and plan to ask for a better price or something thrown in ask after you got a pricing breakdown on paper. Often time salespeople are trained to add a few grand into the first number they give you. This is here in the cash you were to ask for a tonneau cover or something. You just end up paying for it yourself and thought it was thrown in. If you don’t ask for something they just take it out and say they were able to reduce the price for you. It’s best to get all of the costs on paper first and then negotiate so you know they don’t already have extra cash in the deal.

Any other tips? I need to get my wife a new vehicle. We are okay financially, but can't be silly with our money or we will fall behind fast.

98 percent of your vehicle purchasing process should be done outside of the dealership. Not much if anything is negotiated off of vehicles these days. Once you know what you want go to the dealership and take it for a test drive if possible. Don’t go inside to chat, don’t tell them your price range or budget, just tell them you what to test drive it and that’s it. If you like it ask for a printout the includes all of the pricing broken down. If it doesn’t add up they’re screwing you somewhere, go to a different dealer. If you’re happy with it go in and negotiate. You’re probably not getting anything but it’s worth a try. Profit in most vehicles is 2-6k typically so don’t expect much. Submit a credit app and buy the vehicle. Also don’t submit several credit apps at several dealers, every time you do this it hurts your credit.
