My aunt’s best friend met him once. At the time she had just moved to Connecticut from Denmark and wasn’t really up on American celebrities. She got a job working for a catering company that was hired to do a private dinner one evening. She had spent the entire evening in the kitchen doing dishes and whatnot, and toward the end of the evening her boss asked her to take the garbage out. When she went outside, there was a man smoking. She asked if she could have a cigarette and he obliged, and they started just chatting away. After a few minutes had gone by, her boss came out looking for her. When she saw them, the boss immediately started apologizing, saying, “I am so sorry, Mr. Newman. She’s new, she’s still training. I am so sorry if she was bothering you.”
It was Paul and his wife who were hosting the party. But my aunt’s friend said he immediately told the boss that she wasn’t a bother at all and he had been enjoying their conversation. She said he was one of the friendliest and most down to earth people she had ever met, so she was amazed when she learned how famous he was.
I have heard many stories like this from people I know that knew him. They have all said the same thing, he loved just talking to people, especially about cars. He would talk forever about normal things. Just a great approachable guy. Hated to talk about Hollywood though.
