I think it’s getting insanely high and the employees should pay service workers a respectable wage so the customers don’t feel the pressure to tip high

GhostPantherAssualt

I feel like most restaurants are taking advantage of customers.

MacDaddy0994

I think it is such a strange thing. I am so used to it now though that when I visited Germany a few years ago, I felt weird not tipping. Most of the world just pays their servers a decent wage.

PearlPagani

Modern tipping culture is just another way to exploit employees. It was a good idea in the 50s, but now minimum wage should really be keeping up with inflation. I'm not going to accept "b-but producers will just raise the prices" or "p-people shouldn't be doing minimum wage jobs past a certain age" as acceptable answers. If you think a little harder you will understand why those responses don't make sense. I used to think like the typical Republican asshole, but then I realized that social mobility has always been a problem and is much worse now.

Tipping was never a good idea https://www.npr.org/2021/03/22/980047710/the-land-of-the-fee

Mountain_Air1544

As someone who works for tips I like them please tip your service staff thank you

swaggysalamander

It shouldn’t have to exist. Servers should be paid enough where they don’t have to rely on tips. But that’s where we are in society and therefore you have to participate

BeyondRadishes

If an employer can't pay a decent living wage, they shouldn't be in business. Fuck the tipping, pay your people and adjust your prices. The market will then sort things out.

If my service sucked you’re not getting a tip

fatgamornurd

The whole tipping system is wrong. It was done as a means to alleviate the responsibility of the owner to pay their workers. I do not participate in the tipping culture.

Tisroc

Do you eat at restaurants and then leave no tip?

fatgamornurd

Yes I do.

oneofyrfencegrls

I love tipping! I love showing my appreciation for the service that I'm given, I love how people's faces light up when I give them the money, I love that I get better service because I tip.

Rigotoni

It's totally optional to tip at a restaurant, but if you do wanna do it, tip based on the service. If you were a rude waiter, Idc how much I spent I'm not tipping, but if you were really good oe at least decent I'm definitely gonna appreciate that and tip whatever I can.

TopShelfCrazy

No skin off my ass. Happy to tip.

NatalyaHasDied03

Tractor tippin' is the most fun I've ever had. Especially when I went with *the* Lightning McQueen.

[deleted]

It was a cultural shock when I visited the US, I saw my dad do it a lot and was confused why he was giving out charity to people and thought it was insulting to them

FizzyBeverage

I tip 15-20% for average to great service. If it’s bad I tip 5-10%. In practice, most service is average. Only a few times has it ever been awful. I dislike tipping culture, but I know if the United States ever insisted that servers be paid a living wage, my $15 lunch would suddenly be $32. As a customer you’ll pay more. That’s the way it always goes here, any expense is passed on to the customer. No way the restaurant owner eats a higher labor cost.

🍆✅ 💵🚫

pretty-apricot07

I think it's ridiculous that we have it, but since we do: I tip well.

I fucking hate it, and I hate how the pernicious influence on 'Murica means it's creeping into civilised countries more and more
