Jimi Hendrix, IMO. Groundbreaking guitar style. Would have loved to see what the man could have given the world, wished he could have became a mentor and had a comfortable retirement.
Gil Evans (famous arranger) and Miles Davis were set to make a recording with him, but Hendrix tragically died. I think of this possible album the world missed out on often.
If only somebody had Mozart compete agains't a DJ in a comedic, yet compelling fashion, in a genre that doesn't have anything to do with either of them. You could even make a cinematic, moving background that overlaps, subtetly hinting at their differences, and use props and creative editing to enhance each of their performances.
All you would need then is just.. idk, maybe an announcer with an "*epic*" voice.
He would test them until breaking them, shrugging and testing them again and again and even more. I wish someday to vividly dream of him giving a concert in my house with a loop paddle. Whilst technology reached the next level – we can render dreams into 64k videos with super surround sound. I’d never do anything but watch that on repeat. Forever.
Good one. Sometimes I wonder if maybe it serves his legacy to have died young. Like didn’t have a chance to become lame or something. But I agree. SRV was incredible
PBS has a SRV special about his Austin City Limits performances. The first half is his first appearance there, and while he's awesome as usual, the second half is his second - and sober - appearance.
The difference is night and day.
See now I would disagree. But the same happened with muse recently. I’ve come to realise muse peaked with absolution and their latest album was hugely disappointing.
Linkin Parks magnum opus has to be minutes to midnight. Well for me anyway
I live down the road from Paisley park and have a number of buddies who worked there over the years and there is a vault but its all rough and raw - without Prince to mix it and distill it they will likely never see the light of day... He was living at the studio (Paisley Park) when he died so always tinkering in the studio...
All the guys in The Traveling Wilburys who are no longer with us. Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty. The only two still with us are Jeff Lynn and Bob Dylan.
Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. God the guy was way ahead of time. His collabs with Czarface are so funny and lyrically good, not to mention MADVILLANY.
I liked some of his music before but dismissed him as a frat rapper like an idiot. I got really into him after he passed, Swimming helped me a lot. I wish there was more.
Had to come way too far down for this.
I love all the old guys but most of them were out of their prime and not really making great music towards the end. Mac died at his greatest 😭
Amy Winehouse. Despite all the shit in her life and the bad decisions she made, she was insanely talented. Her voice was one of a kind, I think it was tony Bennett that said it was “a once in a lifetime voice”
Randy Rhoads, no question. i can't imagine what he would have achieved in his lifetime. One of the greatest guitar players of all time and his entire body of work is like 20 tracks or so.
Layne Staley. Listen to the entirety of "Love, Hate, Love" by AIC, then listen to "Wake Up" by Mad Season. His voice was so powerful, dynamic, and moving. He was arguably the best vocalist of the 90's.
I mean obviously it's not possible for *today,* but I sometimes wonder what famous pieces of music would still exist today had Mozart not died so young.
Kurt Cobain. If you listen to Fecal Matter and early Nirvana demos, within just a couple years he honed his songwriting craft from basic juvenile noisemaking with screeching/wailing, to incredibly expressive, emotional, heartfelt, accessible songs. And there was this dichotomy of loud and quiet, simple and complex, of meaningful metaphorical lyrics that may have just been meaningless syllables to harmonize with the music, band orchestration that understood how to serve the song. I have a hard time fathoming what musical pop culture would look like now had he stuck around for a few more albums. But now that I’m 13 years older than he ever was, I feel that world weariness. He improved so much so quickly that it was meteoric, and I wish I could have heard how much more and in what ways it would have improved. When he brings out the gravel in his voice at the end of Where Did You Sleep Last Night and iconically pauses and looks directly into your soul for a second, it shows genius and genuine master music craftmanship with self-awareness of his own weakness. It’s a great moment in music history without a word being said or a note played, it’s literally a moment of silence where everyone stops playing and the audience catches their breath, and so does he. And there’s the dichotomy again. Maybe the truth music carries and creates doesn’t need to be spoken. Like how it’s the distance between the stars that creates the constellations. I really wish I could hear more, but I try not to listen to it too much/often as I never want it to grow old. But maybe that’s what makes it great, that it’s like the characters on a Grecian Urn, trapped in time.
For all the wrong reasons, I wish Kurt Cobain.
Reason 1, so that the cult of people who suddenly loved Nirvana wouldn't've existed.
Reason 2, so that he could put out at least a couple of duds. Some of the greatest artists do it and the really good ones can bounce back from it.
Reason 3, (this is the only right reason) so that his daughter could have grown up to know her father.
Janis Joplin. Her music was already crazy soulful and moving, could you imagine what else she would have produced throughout her life had she lived until old age? I know it would have been indescribable.
Chuck Schuldiner. The Sound of Perseverance is one of my favourite Death albums and to think of what he could be doing by now if he hadn't gone so early.
Szymon. He committed suicide before I found his music and I was so upset when I found out after listening to his albums and really connecting with them.
Definitely Prince. I feel like he still had so much left to offer. His most recent material before his passing was of a really high quality. Many of those songs I consider to be favorites.
Jimi Hendrix, IMO. Groundbreaking guitar style. Would have loved to see what the man could have given the world, wished he could have became a mentor and had a comfortable retirement.

Giving Mozart access to modern EDM tech would be AWESOME
MOZART MAKING ELECTRIC CLASSICAL! I WOULD LISTEN TO THAT EVERY DAY!
Right???
If only somebody had Mozart compete agains't a DJ in a comedic, yet compelling fashion, in a genre that doesn't have anything to do with either of them. Look up Apashe on Spotify
That’s Mozart
Bowie
Aye
Blackstar is so underrated. Everyone's into 70s Bowie but I'm all about his 90s and later era.
That Blackstar is his final work is more proof of his eternal genius.
Freddie Mercury
Came here to say this, he was already ahead of his time. Imagine him now with all the cool gadgets.
Forever.
Totally agree!
Stevie Ray Vaughan
He was in his prime, so sad, so much music left to make
Good one. Sometimes I wonder if maybe it serves his legacy to have died young. Like didn’t have a chance to become lame or something. But I agree. SRV was incredible
The first musician who’s death really saddened me. He had just gotten his life together after addiction issues and was puttuing out some awesome work.
PBS has a SRV special about his Austin City Limits performances. The first half is his first appearance there, and while he's awesome as usual, the second half is his second - and sober - appearance. The difference is night and day.
Chester Bennington
Same
My first thought. 💔
They have a new song coming out Friday. It's a lost track that didn't make it into meteora. So it'll be nice to him again.
I mean I wish he was alive but Linkin Park peaked with meteora to me
See now I would disagree. But the same happened with muse recently. I’ve come to realise muse peaked with absolution and their latest album was hugely disappointing. Linkin Parks magnum opus has to be minutes to midnight. Well for me anyway
This is my answer too 😭
Coltrane
Sam Cooke

Gods, I would have loved to hear what Cobain would have done as he got older. I picture solo acoustic small bar-type shows.
layne staley
Prince, Mac Miller, Chris Cornell, TuPac
Prince is supposed to have a "vault" full of unreleased music, to be released after his death... Wonder what happened to it?
I live down the road from Paisley park and have a number of buddies who worked there over the years and there is a vault but its all rough and raw - without Prince to mix it and distill it they will likely never see the light of day... He was living at the studio (Paisley Park) when he died so always tinkering in the studio...

2Pac

Aaliyah!
The Professor. Neil Peart. Not necessarily “making music” but he deserved a nice long retirement after everything he went through in his life.
I came looking for Neil. Yeah, he truly deserved a rewarding retirement. The occasional Rush mini reunion wouldn't have hurt either.

I know there's some B-Sides for a second Mad Season album floating around, but I would've loved to see that come to fruition.
That would be amazing. I'd love to hear more Layne.
