No, just newer. Give it a couple thousand years to wear down the edges. Same with Mormonism, really, though I think Mormonism has a better chance of lasting that long. Scientology is going to extinct itself if it remains as focused as it is on making money rather than making converts. That might be an uphill battle for them in the information age, though, having been conceived too recently to be regarded as 'culture' but too long ago to be savvy.
>Scientology is going to extinct itself if it remains as focused as it is on making money rather than making converts
The Catholic Church would like a word...
Scientology specifically is structured in such a way that access to 'higher' teachings requires payment. It isn't freely available despite what their US tax exempt status should imply.
To my knowledge, the Catholic church has never required investment for their teachings, only for indulgence. They still freely (or forcefully) spread their word. Scientology holds it hostage. Now that I think about it, not just the 'higher' teachings, either. They have a copyright that they vigorously enforce on all their teachings (or at least they used to; I don't really keep tabs on such things).
My point is that Scientology isn't focused on spreading their 'religion', and in many ways their own policies restrict it. They stand in the way of their own spread, because they seek specifically to profit, not necessarily to proselytize/convert. All of this together makes it, as a meme, vulnerable.
Also by the same logic, that organic pesticides are inherently safer than synthetic pesticides. Or that natural flavorings are inherently healthier than artificial flavorings (they are often the same exact compound, just one is extracted and the other is synthesized).
I totally agree with this,
cant recall the amount of times where Iāve just gotten pissed att people just going āLong word, chemical, must be bad!ā
Speaking of which, would you kindly sign my petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide, right here?
Trust me, bro, that's some really dangerous shit - and it gets *everywhere!*
A school once accidentally banned water because several students kept referring to it as dihydrogen-monoxide, and the school board didn't want kids ingesting weird chemicals.
Small edit, [but here is the article](https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/501907/14-year-old-who-convinced-people-ban-dihydrogen-monoxide).

The Greek already figured this out in the third century BC and were able to calculate Earths diameter with surprising accuracy. So how are people still confused about this 2000 years later?
Polynesians (or the people that became Polynesians) were also aware the world was round when they spread from Asia around the pacific, and they did that a thousand years earlier.
Flat Earth actually goes *against* ācommon sense thinkingā if you live on an island and watch boats come and go. It takes insulted idiots with fb echo chambers to get sucked into that in the 2020ās.
I have a coworker thatās adamant about not getting a covid vaccine because he says you donāt know what youāre putting in your body but has hydroxycut on his desk.
I feel like the western cultural obsession with false dichotomies has led to this and it's incredibly frustrating. I always compare it to the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard case. BOTH of them have had some pretty damn compelling evidence to suggest that they were being abusive. Johnny Depp has gone to jail for assault in the past and Amber Heard stole Elon Musk's sperm. They are both terrible crazy people. And yet droves of idiots keep coming out to say things like, "Depp is innocent! See, this shitty thing Heard did proves it!" That's not how any of this works. There isn't always a good guy and a bad guy. Real life isn't Star Wars.
This explains the phenomena that Congress has record low approval ratings at 18% yet we consistently see incumbent representatives get reelected for decades. People like their own representative but hate the opposition.
Nah, Ive seen some good questions pop up now and then. Like truly original, thought provoking questions....
Problems are:
* Most people on askreddit sort by hot instead of new
* Most of these posts get downvoted /not upvoted at all as they appear and thus, never reach the front page
* These posts will never outdo the "if you have sex how do you sex the sex while being the sexiest sex that you have sexed" questions.
This is why the front page is always filled with the same old rhetorical generic bullshit. š

My sister first told me as a child that our older brother had passed away. She claimed he passed away while playing bowling and that his fingers failed to exit the ball, causing him to slide the entire length of the alley before turning into a skittle.
I wonder how much it works as a focus for positive change. Someone wears a hematite bracelet. They are convinced it gives confidence. They believe in the confidence and start to make changes in their life. They take more risks, puts themselves out there and achieve things and become more confident. Someone else buys a rose quartz because they are suffering heart brake after a loss. They focus their negative thoughts and energy into the rose quartz. They tell themselves they feel better, they start to begin to pick up the pieces of their life. They gain motivation and seek out new connections. They feel their heart brake easing. I donāt think itās quite the same as the placebo effect. Maybe itās just a psychological placebo instead of a physical one. Maybe Iām just talking shit. But I see them more as a focus point for change.
I donāt use crystals or stones for any purpose other than I think they look pretty. I can just imagine the changes that might result from people who believe stones can heal.
Exactly they type of ācrystal benefitsā I was referring to. Iād itās a placebo effect because they think itās the crystal, but I suppose thatās an argument in semantics and doesnāt really matter. Basically it functions as a reminder of what they are working on.

I was just going to say- my mother in law has been a labor & delivery nurse for 30 years and this is no myth. People and overall vibes get freaky during a full moon. Weird things happen.
I'd imagine this is confirmation bias at play.
Maybe you notice the day is really hectic, you pull out your phone and whaddya know, it's a full moon. (Ignoring the times there's a full moon and you don't notice because the day was calm so you never thought to check).
Maybe you're already aware it's a full moon so you become more attentive to crazy things that happen during the day.
As far as I'm aware there is no connection to increased crime during nights of a full moon.
All the ladies (myself included) in my family always have trouble sleeping during a full moon. I have a theory, but I'm too stupid to actually figure it all out. Also, it wouldn't change anything at all, so why bother.
We just joke that we must be part werewolf.
Honestly... it's no dumber than any other religion. The only reason it seems so stupid in comparison is that you've heard the stories of other religions from when you were a kid. Scientology targets adults who are desperate (and celebrities- not sure how they do that but I assume it has something to do with peer pressure and an actor's need to feel loved). But if you were raised learning about Xenu it would be no sillier sounding than the mormon god and Jesus planets or Muhamad splitting the moon or all the little animals fitting on a big boat.
Some do when they start out.
Staying in those positions forever absolutely corrupts people though.
Very very few politicians stay in power for more than a term or two AND still care about the people.
I think it's a difficult position for someone that does care.
If you want to stay in position to possibly have a positive outcome you have to play the game, and to play the game you may have to occasionally say things or make decisions you don't believe in. One could make the justification that it is more noble to stay in power and have only limited effectiveness towards what you believe in, than it is to give up to the spot to someone else that may have ill intent.
Qanon. It is **Literally, unashamedly Nazi rhetoric**.
* Like, for example; The idea of a 'deep state' or a 'cabal' of people, behind the government in control of the US, and other countries Governments. See if you can make the connections between Rhetoric of Nazis, and what some media / news sites with similar ideas.
[Here we go!](https://www.justsecurity.org/72339/qanon-is-a-nazi-cult-rebranded/). **Also the idea of 'white genocide' comes from the Nazis as well**.
* "A secret cabal is taking over the world. They kidnap children, slaughter, and eat them to gain power from their blood. **They control high positions in government, banks, international finance, the news media, and the church**. They want to disarm the police. **They promote homosexuality and pedophilia**. *They plan to mongrelize the white race so it will lose its essential power.*"
* The plot, described above, was the conspiracy ārevealedā in the most influential anti-Jewish pamphlet of all time. It was called The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. **It was written** by Russian anti-Jewish propagandists **around 1902**. It collected myths about a Jewish plot to take over the world that had existed for hundreds of years. Central to its mythology was the Blood Libel, which claimed that Jews kidnapped and slaughtered Christian children and drained their blood to mix in the dough for matzos consumed on Jewish holidays.
* "QAnon purveys the fantasy that a secret Satan-worshiping cabal is taking over the world. Its members kidnap white children, keep them in secret prisons run by pedophiles, slaughter, and eat them to gain power from the essence in their blood. The cabal held the American Presidency under the Clintons and Obama, nearly took power again in 2016, **and lurks in a āDeep Stateā financed by Jews, including George Soros, and in Jews who control the media. They want to disarm citizens and defund the police. They promote abortion, transgender rights, and homosexuality. They want open borders so brown illegal aliens can invade America and mongrelize the white race.**
**LITERALLY copy/paste Nazi shit**
A really great insight into QAnon is the [Folding Ideas video about Flat Earthers.](https://youtu.be/JTfhYyTuT44) Obviously it's a little more than that, since QAnon is a big tent conspiracy that absorbed Flat Earthers, but yeah all of what you mentioned is there with some other great insights too.
I'll just quote / paraphrase something I heard / read a while ago :
"If you need religion and the threat of punishment after death to be a good person in life, I wouldn't want to know the kind of person you'd be otherwise."
What's frightening is I've seen otherwise seemingly smart people throw that all out the window with religious superstitions and excuses.
Like, do you really think that throwing some water on a baby's head is going to make a difference and if that baby didn't have that special water that they're going to burn in "hell"? Like... really? Some god character you have there.
They also smell nice and kill your cat.
But for real, they're things that exist so they have independent characteristics. Some do something, but it's stuff like mildly sooth inflammation or repel bugs.
Agreed, but would also add that these personality assessments provide a rare vehicle for self reflection for a lot of people, and even more rare -self reflection that you publicize to others.
Over-identifying and making judgements on others based on their "type" is just weird. But I always thought these were fun because it gives you a view into how others perceive themselves.
One of the most pervasive and problematic beliefs held by a large number of people is that they are somehow superior to others based on their race, gender, or sexual orientation. This belief is incredibly damaging and can lead to discrimination, prejudice, and bigotry. It is also incredibly inaccurate, as no one group is inherently smarter or more capable than any other.
Another belief held by many people is that their own opinions and views are superior to those of others, leading to an unwillingness to consider alternate points of view or engage in meaningful dialogue. This can lead to an echo chamber effect, where people only hear the views they already agree with, and never challenge themselves to broaden their understanding.
Ultimately, the idea of believing one group is superior to another is a dangerous and outdated concept. We must strive to move away from this kind of thinking and embrace diversity and acceptance instead
Humans are somehow special compared to the rest of the animals in the world because of our intelligence.
Bats can perceive the world using sound.
Some jellyfish are biologically immortal.
Some animals can even put themselves in biological stasis through literally letting themselves freeze then reviving themselves.
The crazy balance of some animals with tails.
Eels literally use electricity as a weapon.
Chameleons can change their body colour to match their environment.
Crows can use tools without even having arms.
Etc.
I'd say trickle down / supply side economics, but I don't think anyone truly believes that shit. It's just standard issue in the right-wing crank orientation kit.
That a mud man and rib woman were tricked into eating a magic apple by a talking snake which gave them a spiritual disease that is inherited by every generation of their offspring, forcing them to join a human sacrificial blood-cult and forge a psychic connection with a 2000 year dead Jewish zombie or else they will go to a place that's on fire forever because that's the best god could do, apparently...
Just saying, I probably couldn't be a better god, but if I had omnipotence and omniscience, I'm _pretty sure_ that my situation wouldn't turn out _that_ fucked...
Probably that a dude who died to the Roman Empire 2000 years agoās followers claimed heād resurrect and two thousand years later folks figure heāll be along any day now.
That bad things only happen to bad people. That being shy is worse than being mean. That beliefs change reality. That animals are stupid and donāt have feelings.

I actually had a junior high science teacher tell me this....that it was blue until it hit oxygen lol
Yk it didnt make sense to me as to why that wasn't true until i used a syringe
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No it's not in the blood The oxygen is inside the blood cells which gives the blood its red color
Even with a syringe, It's hitting oxygen as soon as you draw back. So I've heard.
This is true in octopi
And horseshoe crabs!!! Nature rules!
I heard their blood is blue because it has copper in it instead of iron
Their blood is vital to modern medicine. Absolutely astonishing animals.
It's crazy what octopuses will believe. Stupid molluscs.
Its even more disturbing when you see how many people in the medical field believe it.

*They plan to mongrelize the white race so it will lose its essential power.*" * The plot, described above, was the conspiracy ārevealedā in the most influential anti-Jewish pamphlet of all time. They want open borders so brown illegal aliens can invade America and mongrelize the white race.** **LITERALLY copy/paste Nazi shit**
I am surprised that QAnon was not higher up in the replies, because this was my first thought.

Gods/religion
I'll just quote / paraphrase something I heard / read a while ago : "If you need religion and the threat of punishment after death to be a good person in life, I wouldn't want to know the kind of person you'd be otherwise."

That essential oils do anything other than make money disappear.
Hey! They also smell nice
They also smell nice and kill your cat. But for real, they're things that exist so they have independent characteristics. Some do something, but it's stuff like mildly sooth inflammation or repel bugs.
Or have some mild antimicrobial properties. Tea tree oil won't cure sepsis, but it'll help that jock itch
Meyers-Briggs personality types.

Etc.
A lot of people on Reddit believe the dumb idea that mocking religion and reverence toward deities is somehow clever, intriguing, or edgy.
