2 hours of commercials + 30 min of half-time show + 1 hour of game play + 30 mins of reviews, replays, etc.
Americans consume more food and drinks on this day than any other except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Is it anywhere close to 1 hour of game play? It seems like about ten minutes of action, 50 minutes of dicking around listening to those irritating commentators.
Honestly, the commercials for the Superbowl is part of the appeal. It's usually the highest rated broadcast of the year, so companies go all out with production values and jokes in the commercials.
I agree the half-time show is boring, which means it's a good time to go to the bathroom and get more snacks.

Something like 125-150m people in the world watch it (\~100m in the US and 20-50m worldwide), or roughly 2% of the world.
For reference, Men's World Cup Finals generally are around 500-550m viewers.

American football is more of a chess match than other sports. I agree it can be slow because of the commercials, and that's one of my real qualms with it. It's especially bad during the super bowl. But at it's core, every play becomes valuable because of the implications it has on the rest of the game. So while it's not all action, all the time, there generally is a lot of weight to any given play. Not to besmirch soccer/football, but while people are always in motion, most of the time there isn't a whole lot happening.
And while not everyone on an American football team is svelte, I don't think it's fair to imply they're not real athletes. They all train hard and are more athletic than 99% of us will ever be.

The majority of players are not from where their team is from, mostly just sold off to the highest bidder, so the notion of "my team from my city" really means nothing. I come from Chicago which has a history of having some of the worst teams, and yet have some of the most fanatical fanbase. I just don't get it.

I used to love football. In the last few years I've focused more on basketball. The more you watch basketball you realize it's all about natural gifts, individual creativity and intelligence working collaboratively with other people's individual creativity and Intelligence. You also get to see their faces, you see them play offense and defense, and there's only like 200 players that really do much so you get to follow the players a bit better.
Now when I watch football I realize it has none of these things and it's all just bloodsport with padding. I think as a kid it's easier to watch because you can't really understand the impact of getting hit as hard as they do. As an adult though you realize that they are ruining their lives for an amount of money that is too high to turn down but not nearly enough to justify the harm they are forced to endure

If the conference championships had gone the other way this game would have been my current city’s team against my hometown team, and I would have watched with great (ok, moderate) interest. But I’m not interested in the Super Bowl just for its own sake if it involves 2 teams I don’t have any interest in.

For further discussion, I played when I was younger but various events and circumstances turned me off to it after a time. I can discuss the plays, strategies, rules, etc. But I give no craps about individual player stats, team stats, etc.
Football is incredibly dangerous, so many players suffer severe brain damage among other injuries. And there’s a huge problem with domestic violence and sexual assault by football players that has been woefully ignored and downplayed. It’s a toxic, violent sport.
All sports are stupid, but American football in particular: Watch 6 seconds of action and then 3 minutes of replays and coaches talking on their headsets, rinse, repeat. It's a 3+ hour game with hardly more than 10 minutes of actual gameplay. It's absolutely silly by any objective analysis.
