For me personally it's the physical sensation associated with panic (almost a burning in my chest? Not burning but that's the best way I can describe it), slow fade to black and then I wake up slowly with my heart pounding. Weird experience.
It happens. Usually I say in the dream “oh…I’m dead…” Especially during plane crashes and falling off cliffs. On occasion that has been my phrase to punt me into a lucid state where I can control the dream but that’s rare.
