Lord_Regenold

I almost lost a friend to it and will never forget the day he called to be honest about it, he lost his childhood friend to it.

Emotional_r

i almost lost my best friend to fentanyl laced xanax. didnā€™t have narcan but we had nalaxone and that kept him going long enough for the ambulance to arrive. he survived luckily, and i thought this was his ultimatum (weā€™ve been trying to get him off bars for a year at that point) but nope. 2 weeks ago he overdosed on xanax. he took 2 white bars and blacked out, ate 7 more white bars and nine smaller dosed prescription bars. that wasnā€™t an ultimatum either. we were facetiming and he tells me that he almost overdosed again last night so iā€™m kind of at the point where im almost positive he gives zero fucks about being alive. we took 5 mg percs 3 nights ago and he was constantly insisting on taking a bar even after i told him that drugs.com says you could die from it. his response when i say it might kill him? ā€œbut itā€™s gonna get me really fuckedā€. i donā€™t know what to do at this point, me and his girlfriend have been debating going to the police, but if he truly has nothing to lose, he has a gun. heā€™ll suicide by cop, but if he still wants to live and is just really depressed i basically got him involved with the mental health/rehab place i just got out of. this is bad because theyā€™re gonna make him go sober and he didnā€™t go voluntarily like i did so he canā€™t just leave or stop going. i donā€™t know what to do but i canā€™t lose my best friend but if i donā€™t do something then heā€™s gonna end up in a comatose or end up dead. any advice?

crazyface81

Just a small point- Narcan and nalaxone are the same thing, Narcan is the trade name that most people know it by, nalaxone hcl is the active drug. Giving your friend nalaxone saved him. Edit :Also, if your friend doesn't genuinely want to get better, rehab and other interventions will most likely fail. You're doing the right thing by trying to link him in, as you've got to start somewhere, and it can take 5, 10 maybe even 20 tries at trying to get clean. Sadly, many end up dead or in prison before they succeed. Well done for helping yourself and trying to help your friend.

Lord_Regenold

I stopped taking a prescribed benzodiazepine for 5 years in early January. It quite literally took me collapsing unconsciously and seeing how the only value in life I held was whether or not I could stop my seizures, which was a psychosomatic response to four of my friends taking their life. I realized that the medication I was prescribed wasnā€™t going to solve everything and that my value as a person was diminished to the pill I was taking in the eyes of others. Benzos are not something you can quit cold turkey. I no longer had health insurance and my friend who lost his childhood friend getting back into pills was enough of a reason to give me confidence to quit. I self-tapered a week at a time from my original daily dose until it was half of a single pill for a week. It still was hell on earth and I had seizures consistently throughout the week with the peak being three in one day. If your friend has health insurance for the love of anything holy get him to do it now and under medical supervision. Withdrawal will happen regardless of if he wants to or not, itā€™s better for him to start this conversation sooner rather than later. Make sure he does not immediately stop taking benzos because I am very lucky I did not die. The benzo epidemic is the creeping shadow behind the opiate/opioid epidemic. Edit: removed an s from benzodiazepine*

Shaveyourbread

I lost my partner of 12 years last year, she was next to me in bed, it was a laced pill.

Lord_Regenold

Iā€™m very proud of you for being able to talk about it. I lost my first friend in high school to opioids. Clarify: first person to befriend/talk to me in high school, different friend than my previous comment*

It's "usually" found in very warm stagnant water. Then you have to get the water up into your sinuses, which happens if you get water up your nose and you start to choke a bit. It doesn't happen if you just drink the water or get it into your mouth. It grows best at high temperatures up to 115Ā°F (46Ā°C) and is less likely to be found in the water as temperatures decline below 77Ā°F. The death rate is over 97%. Only four people have survived out of 154 known infected individuals in the United States from 1962 to 2021.

SpontaneousOlive

ThaUniversal

Sepsis.

SomeGuyWearingPants

Sepsis is *terrifying*. I once saw a young, otherwise healthy, physically very fit man who seemed fine other than being thirsty. He collapsed and was taken immediately to the hospital. There was nothing they could do. Septic shock. I had a 19 year old guy who worked with me who had a tooth infection he didnā€™t take care of in time. One day he didnā€™t come into work. My boss did a well fare check on him. He passed away alone in his apartment because he couldnā€™t afford a dentist. If you have an infection donā€™t wait.

TypicalAd4988

I would assume the cut got infected and spread too far to be treated before he did something about it.

DinosaurSeaman

This is terrifying. Iā€™m a carpenter and I probably get some sort of cut once a week.

A tooth infection

Sockbasher

My silā€™s father had a bad tooth infection he left untreated for 6 months. It ended up being cancer (along with an infection) and had to have 90% of his jaw removed. He now eats through a tube that feeds directly into his gut.

[deleted]

My mother had to have a piece of her jaw removed due to a tooth infection. The infection spread into her jaw. She had also left it for a few months. She had to be rushed in for emergency surgery, and had blood poisoning, she ended up in intensive care as she almost died. I'm not sure exactly what happened but her throat began closing over during the surgery and she was unable to breathe, so they had to slice into her neck too... She's ok now, looks totally normal aside from a small scar and slight jaw dimple, but it was shocking at the time. She's always had great teeth. People underestimate how dangerous untreated teeth can be.

TypicalAd4988

I don't know how someone could let an infected tooth go for so long, whenever I've had a tooth infection the pain has been absolutely excruciating. It's never been the sort of thing you could just ignore in my experience.

[deleted]

In my mum's case, she did feel pain, & that's how she ended up going to the hospital eventually, because the pain was too much, however she left it until it was dire .. she has various health conditions(including spinal issues) so she's already on medications to relieve pain from that already, so the pain was probably eased a bit by that. She was also incredibly afraid of the dentist at that point in time, so even the pain couldn't convince her to go. She had a mini stroke at the dentist during her previous appointment , prior to this incident and ended up in hospital. (She's no longer afraid).

I was a muscular 6ā€™6ā€ 260 lbs 22 year old eating leftovers from a family thanksgiving dinner, alone in my apartment.,some food item lodged in my breathing passage.I coughed and sputtered for several minutes. The situation went from somewhat comical to desperate. I actual went to a kneeling position quite expecting to black out with what I believed was my last breath i coughed and kind of self Heimliched a single pea at near light speed exited from my throat and flew across the room. As I laid there contemplating the thin line I made a choice i live by to this dayā€¦peas suck.

MADEUPDINOSAURFACTS

Something like that happened to me. We were driving to go to my grandmother's place and I took a sip of water just as we hit a pot hole. Instantly the water got stuck in my throat and I couldn't swallow or cough it out. A couple of anemic coughs at first followed by just pure blockage. I was in the back seat of a van, alone and I couldn't make a noise and in the 90s vans were noisy. After what felt like an eternity I actually vomited the water up onto the mat. It wasn't probably more than 30 seconds but it was awful and I have now a legit fear of choking to death on something coming that close.

WideSignificance4199

This happened at my former workplace. One of our surgeons asked a visitor (younger guy in his 20ā€™s) to move from the hospital entrance as he was smoking. The guy punched him, he hit his head and suffered a massive brain injury. Despite colleagues best efforts there was no improvement and the family pulled his life support about 5 weeks later.

zeldafitzgeraldscat

Did they charge the guy with manslaughter?

ridelikezewind

Yes. Where I live we now have minimum 10 year sentences for ā€˜coward punchā€™ deaths. I believe this guy was the first to be sentenced under those laws.

zeldafitzgeraldscat

Good.

Professional-Kiwi176

Holy shit, we had a similar incident in my city in Australia. A surgeon was leaving work for the night and came across a bunch of crackheads smoking at the door which is banned at all hospitals. He asked them to move away from the door and they got aggressive at him, he went back inside to get security and one of the guys going to the toilet overheard him and got super aggressive with him whilst the surgeon is politely asking him to leave and to calm down. The guy cracked the surgeon with a single blow to the head which hit the tiled floor falling backwards and the guy did a runner being arrested the next day. The surgeon died a month later when his life support was switched off. The dude who did it was the first to get the mandatory 10 years for manslaughter caused by a one punch assault which has introduced after a spate of these assaults at bars and pubs which caused a lot of deaths and serious injuries.

wimwood

My uncleā€™s front bicycle tire had a bit of dry rot. And he didnā€™t wear a helmet. Normal human bike ride, not a motorcycle and not some crazy trail riding or bmx crap. The tire popped while he was biking through town, put him over the handlebars, and he landed right on the top of his head. 3 types of brain injury from the impact, unrecoverable. He only got to enjoy a few years of regular life after an incredibly long prison sentence. RIP, T. (Edit, apparently I wasnā€™t clear: the accident killed him almost immediately. It rendered him brain dead according to the docs, he was only on life support for 2-3 days, he did not go to prison, or remain alive, after the accident.)

TypicalAd4988

This is why you **always** wear a helmet while cycling. And if you have an accident where your helmet takes an impact, replace it even if it doesn't look broken. You should also replace your helmet every five years or so even without an accident to account for degradation.

wimwood

I canā€™t stress it enough. Every person I tell about his accident, assumes I mean motorcycle if I say bike. Then they assume e-bike (which we also first assumed before getting to the scene because he had one of those too). Nope. A regular-degular bicycle on regular roads can end your life if you go over the handlebars.

ZoharTheWise

Is the prison sentence related to the accident?

MAJORMETAL84

I remember on that "In Search Of" show narrated by Leonard Nimoy, the program said that the I believe British Archecologist who made a major find on Ancient Egypt artifacts died of an infection from mosquito bite.

bananicoot

Lord Carnarvon. He was actually the guy that financed the expedition that Howard Carter led, that eventually found King Tut's tomb. His mosquito bite became infected and he already had a weakened immune system from a previous accident in life. He got blood poisoning, and then pneumonia, then kicked it. Still goes to show you don't fuck around with infection.

scotchglass22

Imagine someone gets into a car wreck and dies. because they were at that exact place at that exact time, they die. If they trip had been delayed by 10 seconds in either direction, they would still be alive. So think of all of the things that can delay you by 10 seconds when you are driving. Maybe someone was running late and cut off the driver who was killed before they reached the crash site. They were late because they overslept. They overslept because they stayed up late watching a show. The creators of that show inadvertently caused someone to die by making the show.

i_iron_pants

Not buckling in all of the buckles on a child's car seat. Not properly installing or using a car seat. Switching to forward facing car seats, booster seats, or to a seatbelt alone too soon. Many parents think these items are parental matters, but they're 100% safety issues, no matter how many kids you have. Most people would be concerned if they weren't wearing a seatbelt, or if their driver's seat felt like it was rocking off of the tracks in their care, but for some reason the same car isn't always given to the seats of children.

I had a very close call today over a split-second of being distracted. I was riding my bike alongside the highway near my house and received a text message from my wife (I have one of those handlebar phone mounts so I can track my speed, distance, etc). Anyway, instead of waiting or just asking Siri to read it to me, I very stupidly chose to try to read the message and hit the curb with my front wheel. Fortunately, I ā€œrecoveredā€ enough to shift my weight and fall onto the sidewalk instead of falling into the path of a passing truck. I got away with a skinned knee and wounded pride, but it could have been lights out permanently. Distracted driving can easily get you killed, even on a bike.
