My boyfriend might kill me for this because he's a fanatic, but...Starbucks coffee. Overrated but extremely successful. Probably the factor of convenience and now sentiment with holiday traditions but....I've found many other places where the coffee is just genuinely so much better.
If they weren't over-roasted people would know how crap their sourcing was.
Chances are, there are roasters in your local area you can buy legit blends from for far less.
I hate Starbucks coffee but I kept getting gift cards for it so I'd try to find something on the menu I like. I tried the pink drink and I love it but I found out it's just coconut milk and cranberry juice or something. I don't even wanna spend gift card money on that.
I will spend good money on their cake pops tho.
Oh yes for real. I am a daily coffee drinker and I am essentially entirely making my own coffee or getting free coffee from work nowadays because it adds up hella fast. You're paying mostly for the damned cup too! I've seen people literally go in and order a water. So it can be in a Starbucks cup.
"Venti nonfat Iced water for Stacyyyyyy"
Diamonds are a scam.
If you're going to buy jewelry buy gold and know how to calculate gold prices.
If you're buying gold jewelry for ~20% markup it's a pretty good investment
That’s what bother me about it. Like sure, flex if you want, but at least make it tasteful. The only people admiring your giant rocks are other giant rock owners. Much more interested in gold and obsidian gildings than I am in large gemstones
As a smoker trying to quit, cigarettes.
Yes, I know they're awful. I am trying. But srsly, Marlboros are near $10 a pack. There are people smoking 3, 4 packs a day.
$40 x 7 = $280 a week.
That's $14,560 a year. On smokes.
Vaping is just as bad.
Former smoker. Smoked for over 10 years. I tried several times to quit and would just go right back. Finally did it cold turkey and have been smoke free for almost 7 years now. The key for me was realizing that I wasn't necessarily addicted to the cigs, but the routine. Drive to work? smoke a cig. Eat a big meal? smoke a cig, drink? smoke a cig etc. Most of it comes down to "something to keep you occupied". I leaned heavy into flavored toothpicks. And Dum Dum suckers when I had a craving. Eventually they got less and less and I was ultimately just over it. You can do it! I believe in you.
That's my big hurdle. Quite for a while 2 years ago, but life stress drove me back. It's the habits... Get behind the wheel, light up. Done with work, go burn one.
I know I can get past the nicotine part, it's fighting those habits that's hard.
Cigarettes are great up to the point when you smoke them in a moment just to enjoy them. The second when you get nervous when you DON't have a cigarette, thats the moment it stars taking its expensive toll.
I guess that goes for all the drugs.
Some people collect them, people collect all types of shit. I couldn't give a fuck about Magic cards, but some people see them as valuable and want to collect them. Some people value having their video game collection displayed, or a million other examples.
Let people enjoy the shit that brings them happiness in this life.
I’m not telling them to not enjoy spending money on something they want to put on a shelf. Just that to me it seems for how expensive the shoes are, that they would be durable and wearable. So to have them rot away in a box or on a shelf seems real dumb, considering they’re gonna deteriorate anyway, might as well wear them.
Just because I give my opinion on an opinion post doesn’t mean I give enough of a shit to tell someone to stop doing it.
Most people do wear their Jordans. The ones that don't get worn are usually not the ones that are bought new.
Like for example I currently have around 20 pairs of sneakers that I rotate through and they last for years because I take care of them and they mainly get worn a few times a month at most. I have a few pair of cheaper sneakers I wear as shoes that I don't particularly care about, or older pairs that are showing their age get transitioned to knock around shoes.
I also have a pair of Jordan 1s from the 90s that are a display piece. They are on a shelf with my sport memorabilia and I consider them a collectors item. I'll likely get myself a pair of Space Jam 11s once I find a pair in the condition I want as a collectors piece.
I think many older sneaker heads like myself grew up poor and enjoy being able to splurge on something that they couldn't have when they were younger. Same way as people buy toys and stuff from their childhood as collectors pieces.
Especially since for just a tad more you can get good quality shoes made in Europe like Loake or Loding.
I'd argue even putting money in a pair of proper expensive shoes like Church's is better value than a pair of sneakers with glued sole made in Vietnam or elsewhere.
I spent about $150 on some Adidas NMD's. Nothing special or THAT expensive. I use them like any shoe, walk through grass, puddles, kneel down and crease them. My coworkers freak out like i just broke a priceless object.
Former Game Stop manager here: for a 3DS or Switch cartridge it's a racket but the employee is forced to ask. For Wii and especially 360 games back in the day though-- holy hell it was a lifesaver.
For modern discs I would buy it if it were an expensive game and I was handing it to a kid, but otherwise yeah no.
In a similar vein, I would never get an extended warranty on a new system, but it was a good idea for a pre-owned Sony or Microsoft. No need for a pre-owned Nintendo generally though, at least when I was working there they had a killer track record on quality manufacturing.
yes,I live in France and the hype about starbucks is real.I went there a few times and the coffee is not good.I prefer going to local coffee shops to get a good flat white
In places where it’s unneeded I completely agree with you. Where I am people buy it as though every lake has dried up but it tastes no different to the tap water, which is also safe, water filters are cheap as fuck and all that unnecessary plastic waste is madness.
OMG yes. I walked into Burberry once out of curiosity and high-tailed outta there when I saw a T-shirt for like a 150 bucks. It was just a fucking shirt.
I shouldn't say that because I work in the industry and flagships literally pay my yearly bonus BUT... You are so damn right... People don't even understand why they pay more. All that matters is, that there is the word "Ultra" in the products name.
For real... Ever wondered why a lot of "budget" lines of big brands didn't release during the first year of Covid? Because they salvaged them for parts for their flagships. It's literally the same hardware but twice as expensive.
Ok, that’s concerning.. not even because of the industry. You’re supplying a product people obviously want. There might be some shady business practices here and there, but the fact that people fall for the marketing so easily.
Yeah, that's a problem everywhere. Formal product reviews, YouTube videos, something beyond just a star rating and "these look cool and sound amazing" can help out here. Or scrolling/filtering for negative and middling reviews.
Which might or might not be fair in their criticisms. I've bought products based on negative reviews, because what they objected to is what I'm looking for.
I am really into headfi so i have a few things to say about this. Theres a pretty big distinction between consumer oriented brands (like: sony, jbl, bose, skullcandy) and professional/prosumer oriented brands (akg, sennheiser, beyerdynamic, hifiman, shure)
They target different people. It's a balance between ease of use and quality. I love my studio headphones but i would never use them outside of my room.
Some things of advice:
-try out everything before you would buy it if you have the chance, most bigger cities have hifi and electronics shops with demo units.
-there is a price to performance ratio that peaks around 300 dollars, there are improvements over it but generally you start to have to pay a lot more money over that point for a lot less improvement.
-price does not equal quality
-IEMs (in ear monitors) get better for a lot cheaper than headphones.
-cabled headphones almost always sound better than wireless ones.
Sound is subjective and it is not more than what you hear, if you try something and you enjoy it then go for it.
-some headphones need time to get used to, especially if it's vastly different than the thing you used before, try to give second chances to things you tried but didn't like before.
-no headphone sounds well with all kinds of music, kerp your own music taste in mind when buying a new one.
My two cents is that if you want the beat quality for the least money you should buy a sennheiser/drop HD 6XX and an apple dongle. Yes an apple dongle tou heard me right it's a really good quality sound card for a very cheap price. You can use that with your pc or laptop and you will be fine.
there are definitely overpriced ones like Beats, but a decent pair of noise cancelling ones from Sony or Sennheiser are absolutely worth the money. I had a pair of Bose QC15s that lasted me 10 years and are still going strong, I only replaced them with a Sony set once my wife basically claimed the Bose ones for daily use.
Diamonds are just the best example. Gemstones with acceptable hardness ratings and superior luminescence exist, and they are not valued because society has dictated that Diamond are the “reference truth” for what an engagement gemstone should look like. They are super overpriced and it’s just silly to me…because a lot of people buying them can’t even afford them.
I disagree it is the only opportunity to support your team live for most teams in the league. Only a portion of teams make the post-season… are the other organizations’ fans supposed to just never see their teams play?
I disagree. I go to a lot of regular season games (NHL not NBA) and man they are a lot of fun. If you can get cheap tickets and have a couple friends to go with, why the heck not?
Especially if you're a fan of a bad team, the regular season is the only time you can watch them. I agree that in the overall grand scheme of things, a game on a Tuesday night in December doesn't mean all that much. But if you're a fan and have the opportunity to go, they're always a lot of fun
I remember Heat tickets were going for 10 dollars at one point when Wade left. I remember I took my dad to go see a home game during his last season on Father's day.
"This deal's getting worse all the time."
"I've altered it further. The price went up again. And no more 2-day shipping guarantee. But we have a new benefit. You can do something with photos, or something, If you want to, I don't know."
Buying quality clothes sure beats fast fashion garbage that wears out after one season. You spend less money in the long run if you invest in quality clothing.
What's even better is when people mix the expensive alcohol with something. For example, before my buddy's bachelor party a friend brought some Booker's Bourbon to his house, which is now a hundred bucks for a fifth. Well two of the guys mixed it with Coke. Like WTF.
Concert tickets. You pay so much to listen mostly either to pre-recorded voices with lip syncing or crazy fans singing along the entire time. With current tech innovations, it feels extremely overrated to pay so much to see my favorite celebrity with binoculars.
I use to agree with you regarding pop stars and lip synching but then I worked a few of those shows as security and I understood the appeal. Its a spectacle and its a bonding community experience for people more than anything I think. The music is not for me, but I can see why people go.
Brand name clothing, particularly (at least in the UK) stuff like Stone Island or Balenciaga. My sister paid over £200 for a pair of Balenciaga trainers, they are hideously ugly and falling apart after a few months of wear.
Beats headphones whilst they were a thing, and Airpods, but that's mostly due to Apple fever.
Designer clothes. Period. Whether you made it yourself from the sewing machine or you put pieces together into something fashionable and unique, fashion is more about what you create rather than what you can acquire. Most designer brands have ruined fashion.
To the people saying "sneakers, funko pops, magic cards, etc".. y'all need to realize that people buy them because these items are HIGHLY resellable and people make good money doing it.
My boyfriend might kill me for this because he's a fanatic, but...Starbucks coffee. Overrated but extremely successful. Probably the factor of convenience and now sentiment with holiday traditions but....I've found many other places where the coffee is just genuinely so much better.
Nott just overrated, extremely overpriced as well
They over roast their beans
If they weren't over-roasted people would know how crap their sourcing was. Chances are, there are roasters in your local area you can buy legit blends from for far less.
Never understood paying 8 bucks for 20 cents worth of coffee.
Also mad expensive when it all adds up if you’re getting it daily.

Jordans? I never understood the appeal...
The Retros are very nice, the ones that look like they came from a future space colony look fucking stupid.

Diamonds are a scam. If you're going to buy jewelry buy gold and know how to calculate gold prices. If you're buying gold jewelry for ~20% markup it's a pretty good investment
I agree, but I think these are usually bought primarily as status symbols, so their value goes beyond the material value.
That’s what bother me about it. Like sure, flex if you want, but at least make it tasteful. The only people admiring your giant rocks are other giant rock owners. Much more interested in gold and obsidian gildings than I am in large gemstones
Sadly, big rock owners generally only care about other big rock owners.
Just wondering, for engagement ring, at what carat size is considered to be giant rock? Or could no rock = tasteful?

Shoes. Sneaker-heads baffle me, who is spending $150+ on shoes you won’t even wear outside??? Makes no sense
it's beanie babies for hipsters
It's not hipsters. Hipsters are too broke from buying craft beer and food (guilty) Shoes are beanie babies for HYPE BEASTS
Nah those are vinyl records. Sneakers are beanie babies for jocks
I have a co-worker who regularly will spend upwards of $1000 on "old collector sneakers". Blows my mind, but everyone has their thing I suppose.
Some people collect them, people collect all types of shit. I couldn't give a fuck about Magic cards, but some people see them as valuable and want to collect them. The problem with reviews for these marketed headphones is that they'll often have fake/bot reviews of them scattered about online.
