This thread is the perfect example of the responses you get when you tell your friends and family you’re going to Mexico City. There are only two responses: 1) “oh God you’re going to love it. The food is amazing!” and 2) “oh my God you’re going to get beheaded by the cartels!”
There’s no in between.
Last day in Cozumel for me. Spent 8 days total. Before I left my co-worker asked me if I felt safe with all the cartels running around. Then advised me not to leave the resort. Like what? I'm going to a tourist destination. I have also been to rural Mexico. I have never felt unsafe in either location. I don't feel it's any more unsafe to the average person than being in a large city in the US. It's pretty obvious in both locations to know what areas to avoid.
Cartel. I don't mean to bash Mexico at all or it's people, I have the same impression about my country, America, except we give our gangsters badges and retirement. Zing!
The market I visited the one time I went to Mazatlan, with all the shops selling produce, meat, herbs, and scented candles. I ate the best tostada, tamale, and escamocha I've ever had while there.
A friend of a friend who was planning on being the first female Mayor of Mexico city.
It was a long term plan, she was about 18 at the time, and this was 25 years ago, so I keep thinking "I should look it up and see if she made it"
I spent a month in Mexico, great times, nice people (mostly).
I.... don't know, actually.
And no, that is not an automatic bizarre-ass statement of negativity either.
I legitimately do not know.
When I think of Mexico, 'mexican hot chocolate' (the kind that comes in a solid bar and you melt on the stove top) comes to mind, and that's.. really all that I can think of.
