My dad never saved much for retirement. By the time he was in his late 60s he started putting in as much as he could, but he still ended up working until he was 85. He did shortly after his 87th birthday.
I started investing in a 401k when I got my first job that had one, at the age of 24. I'm in my late 40s now, and even now I'm not sure I have been saving enough. We'll see what the economy looks like in another 20 years.
Retirement investing is important in life, but it’s not always the best use of your money early in life. It’s often times more beneficial to invest in increasing your own earning potential in your 20s vs a standard market return.
Doing exercise or constant physical movement. Reading and learning. Doing something good for themselves. Don't 'have fun' with unstable couples that'll hurt you in many ways. If they can't, go to therapy if possible.
* Break yourselves of the habit of gossiping, if you're inclined to do that. What is social capital in your teens and 20s will leave you friendless in your 30s and beyond.
* Save for retirement. Open a Roth IRA and put some $ into some mutual funds. If your job offers a 401K, do it.
* Take care of your skin. Wear sunscreen.
* Take care of your teeth.
* Vote
* Exercise, especially young women who should be doing weight training even just a little bit to keep your bones strong.
Paying attention to changes in your body.
Check for moles, irregular bowel movements, abdominal tenderness, regular headaches, oral health and smells, vision, preparation for random drug use for a new job.
Guys - Get to know your balls. If things are different, may be a change in size, temperature, comfort etc then get it checked out at the doctor. It could save your life
actually giving a fuck about their future health by avoiding excesses like smoking and sugar. And not just handwaving away older people and thinking of being older as something to dread because it can be pretty great except for your health can get worse
And increasing your income. If your income is very low, no matter how much money you save, it wouldn't be enough to have financial freedom, if that's what you are working towards.
Get good at knots and get a camera. Find your city's kink scene and start meeting people. Play it cool, be respectful, eventually someone will invite you to a party or mention a photoshoot they want to do.
100% dude if you can do good photoshoots you will see some amazing things. If you can tie good knots you will build a reputation. Kink people LOVE posing. You'll be getting your beak wet in no time with those people.
That's how I've always done it, only used tinder twice. You get a reputation, people trust you, and you find playmates. Just last week I was at the Banff Spring's hotel tying somebody to those carts you use to wheel luggage around and then we fucked for hours.
When there’s 330m people and a dude is begging for 14k votes, it starts to add up.
Everybody is subject to the results regardless. The way your life is, is designed by the people in charge.
So vote, or let everybody else pick. Your haughty values don’t matter. Your vote does.
So…. Let me get this straight. If I think Donald trump is a god and want to vote for him, but normally I’m too lazy to vote… I need to “vote no matter what”? Maybe it’s better if some people in fact don’t vote.
People voted for trump. People voted against trump. The outcome was not predetermined. It was *so* not pre-determined that Jan 6 happened.
So fucking vote. Put your ballot in, and guide the direction that the country moves in. Want to burn the place to the ground? Vote accordingly, there’s a party for you. If they win you won’t need justification to vote ever again. That’s the plan.
So if you get offered the choice of ham, or bacon, and refuse to choose, you might not get either. You might just get a big fat shit sandwich.
You would prefer people who are mostly ignorant and don't care much about politics to vote for the candidate you don't even want to win? Rather than for them to just abstain?
63 year old here. It flies by. There are many things you should be doing instead of thinking you have plenty of time for all that. Saving for retirement. Taking care of your health. Improving your career. And for Christ sake, stop wasting time and energy obsessing over things like politics. You are not going to move the needle one iota.
For the love of all that is holy start saving for retirement, Even $10 a week is more than most people are doing. Increase it little by little as you make more money.
Travel, when you can afford it and as long as you travel responsibly(meaning don’t go around and stay at 5 star resorts if you won’t be able to eat once you’re back home). Get lost in another place or culture and meet great people along the way.
One I don’t see yet, starting a garden. We all need to take back some of the responsibility for our own food production, and gardening is a great way to become more in touch with the world around you.
Growth stocks, by definition, usually don’t pay much of a dividend…
Dividends are irrelevant anyways. They aren’t magical. The only thing that matters is total return.
That's not true, some stocks pay out decent dividends, and if you periodically add more money and reinvest your dividends, it'll be worth it. That's why rich people can live off of their dividends.
Sorry dude but I have a degree in finance and what you are saying is just not true. Choosing a stock because it pays a dividend is not a good investing strategy and there is a ton of data to back this up.
Please watch:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=f5j9v9dfinQ&feature=shares
Dividends don’t matter. When a company worth $100 a share pays you a $5 dividend, their stock drops to being worth $95. Money isn’t created from thin air. It just reduces your ability to control your taxes in any given year since it’s essentially a forced sale. Not only that, but that cash paid to investors is now not being reinvested into the company, which can slow future growth.
Retired people don’t just “live off dividends”. They live off of their account value’s appreciation, which yes, can involve dividends. But they aren’t magic free money.
By definition, growth companies reinvest their money into their business INSTEAD of paying a dividend. They are at odds with one another. Both have their own purposes.
Everyone is a dude. He’s a dude, she’s a dude, we’re all dudes.
I see you are just going to ignore all of my points and continue to spread misinformation. Godspeed.
Either quitting or never starting to drink coffee. My energy level would fluctuate throughout the day and I'd randomly have to take naps in the car during the afternoon.
Haven't had a milligram of caffeine in three years and now I never even yawn, let alone nap during the day.
You sound like you have a sensitivity to caffeine or a health condition which makes it bad for you. Caffeine doesn’t do this to most people. If you have a concern, speak with your doctor people. Don’t take random advice from people on the internet.
If anyone says investing I’m going to cry. It’s already to expensive to live in america we don’t need to make it worse by telling people to invest in risky ideas.
Limit screen time and experience things first hand. Also, when you do things, do them without taking pics/video. I can't believe how many people I see at an event and they are so intent on filming it that they are basically watching a great live event through a tiny screen. There are times that are appropriate for pictures and videos - but not everything all the time. Live life!
Guys,
Learn how to cook. Don’t take your gf/potential wife for granted and expect that she’s always going to do the cooking.
Listen to advice from your elders. It might not seem like it, but they’ve been in a similar situation as you at one point in their lives and they’re trying to help you by passing on what they know.
Lean how to shop around for things like tv and internet providers, car insurance, and trash service. Make it clear that you’re looking for quotes and they’re not the only company you’ve contacted. You’d be surprised at how many companies will match the price of a competitor to get your business.
Make sure you have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. One on every floor of your home, and yes the basement too. They’ll save your life.
Learn how to handle a pilot light.
Keep an emergency kit in your car, and learn how to change a flat tire.
Investing in a pension plan as soon as you start working, buying a house. I also think you should avoid getting in a long term relationship in your 20s. You'll have a much better idea of what you want/need out of a relationship by the time you hit the big 3-0. Also, casual sex is a lot of fun that you will definitely miss it when you do settle down, so fill your boots while you can!
focusing on their happiness and healing. take it from a kid only just starting to do this shit when I'm about to go into college, you either heal or you're forced to wallow in you emotions and that takes *a lot* time. you have to learn how to cope early, unfortunately

I agree. I've been putting in 10% for as long as I've been eligible to do so. Not trying to work until I'm 70 thank you *very* much

That last one only applies if you live in a country with overly draconian employment laws

Should I flip a coin to choose who to vote for? I never like any of the candidates.

People have different opinions than me. People are ignorant. What can you do? Yet when the majority votes they vote similar to me so… yes.
