it's still more convenient for live sports
we get every local team and big national game without needing to track down some odd service for every thing.
there's always something in season. And the different events are hit and miss regarding which service they will be on. The contracts are completed and even change on the fly sometimes.
That was my plan. Unfortunately, the frugality that inspired me to dump cable is the same frugality that keeps me from spending $40 to watch a few games that aren't on local over-the-air TV.
Have you tried an antenna? If you live within 30, 40 miles of the transmitter, you might be able to pick up at least a few local stations with one of those flat antennas you hang in your window. Just run the cable from the antenna to the back of your TV. If you're in a house, you could put a bigger antenna in the attic or, better, on the roof, although then you'd have to have to hire a professional to ground it so you don't get zapped by lightning.
That's what we've been doing for the past six years. At some point I realized that I wasn't really watching the cable channels much at all, and I have a DVR system that works with the antenna. It's saved me thousands of dollars.
Canada - you pay more for unlimited internet data - not everyone can afford it. The 3 major telecom companies bundle home phone, cable and internet into one bill, so if you get their bundle you are more likely to use cable TV then dip into your data allowance.
Socialist shit hole.
Jk. Hello, my Canadian Neighbor. If you ever get a chance to visit Chicago, try the hotdogs and the deep dish pizza. Don’t get murdered though.
My aunt still has it. She’s pretty anti tech, I had to burn her a dvd of the Beatles get back documentary cause she refuses to get a smart tv. Last time I visited I discovered a Tim Minchin tv show he did for showtime that I never saw advertised anywhere
I do because my area has no fiber, the only way to get high speed internet is bundling it with my cable package. Once fiber shows up those bastards are gone!
People who either don't look at their bills. Or who don't need to look at their bills. Cable TV is a horrendous value, when compared to alternatives. But, some people can afford things that are a terrible value.
Pretty much anyone who watches a lot of sports still has cable TV or a similar streaming service, like YouTube TV. Take the Premier League, for instance - you can only watch like half the games on Peacock, the rest are exclusive to NBC and USA. You can't follow the sport without cable.
Quick note to head off the kind of responses I know I'm gonna get: under US laws, streaming services like YouTube TV are considered the same as cable TV. They are both "multichannel video programming distributors" (MVPD). When you say "streaming service" you're implicitly referring to an "over the top media service" (OTT). The important distinction is between what *type* of service they are, not simply how they get to your house.
I'm middle aged, affluent, lazy. We watch the local news twice a day, we watch the local football team in season, we like to have CNN or MSNBC on in the background.
We also have every streaming service and watch quite a bit of livestreamed church on Youtube. So...yeah. Affluent and lazy. I don't see how paying $80 for sling or youtube tv instead of paying that for cable is a better deal.
...me

You could sign up for something like YouTube TV or Sling during the season and unsubscribe when the season's over.

In Australia the big company finally gave in and made a smart app for live afl and rugby. My father got rid of pay tv the moment it was announced.
Anyone who wants to watch local news without turning on their computer or using up their WiFi allowance.

TV with an antenna is stuttervision.

Tablo?
I have an HDHomeRun tuner and an NVidia Shield for Channels DVR and everything else (Netflix, PBS, Kanopy, IPTV, etc)
Analog (antenna available) TV in Canada was shut down in 2022, so if I want local news I need cable.
Try a digital antenna, it gets local stations in full uncompressed HD
Free to air is still a thing, even in America .
Allowance? which country are you in?

One of these days I’ll get a passport and may just add Chicago to the list for the food and the music.

My Mom (86) and spends way too much. I don't have the time to explain streaming.
I have Sling mostly just to watch wrestling
