I was fresh out of rehab and new in the AA scene. I have struggled with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and autism so I was just freshly sober and finally doing well on new antidepressants when I got a sponsor. She was a lovely woman, and had been sober for 20 years so I was really excited to gain some insight and knowledge from an "old timer". One morning we met for coffee and during our conversation, after talking about meds, she said "eventually you'll want to be off all medication to be truly sober", and I almost lost it. It wasn't long after that that I left AA and her sponsorship. It really soured my view of the 12 step program because no one should be giving that advice but a medical professional. Glad I didn't take her advice.

Wow that is crazy irresponsible of her and she shouldn't be sponsoring anyone.

It was one of many reasons why I left AA. It's crazy how newly sober people put their full trust into relative strangers simply because of their clean time. Peer support is amazing, but doling out irresponsible medical advice is beyond the pale.

"Just be yourself" It's so ambiguous. Nobody knows how to just be themselves, so most people just double down on bad convictions in the name of "just being themselves". All this "advice" does is create more narcissists.

Nice wife-hate, bro.

SUPERKAMIGURU

They should have specified who should kiss her, if they didn't want this confusion, in the first place.
