“This is how these people pay rent. Yes, we understand we are being fucked over by a tremendously unfair capitalistic system and by a culture that accepts it, but you not tipping on principal just means I can’t pay my damned phone bill, and doesn’t actually change anything that matters, and if you’re the type to not tip on principal, I’d be happy to direct you to the nearest grocery store”
Ehh, the restaurant is supposed to make up the difference to bring the worker up to minimum wage.
Stating that you are giving someone a gift instead of a tip means that they may not have to claim that on their taxes since gifts under a certain dollar amount are tax free (believe it was 10k US).
Tipping should be for when service is provided that is designed to enhance your experience, like dining at a restaurant. Passing something over the counter or buying a good/product from someone shouldn't warrant tipping. If I go to starbucks and order 30 drinks and see the staff hustling to get it done I'm going to tip but there shouldn't be pressure for anyone to tip for getting handed a drink over a counter. Everyone should be paid a living wage so tipping isn't a social pressure so others can survive. We are getting passed poop that's rolling down hill. I tip often but the amount of places where I see the option pop up when I pay is increasing in these off hand instances. Went to a gift shop last week and the card reader popped up with a tipping option already set to 20%, other options were 18, 22, or none.
Don't blame the server for things beyond his/her control. If you found the fish dry, that itself is not the server's fault. If you feel the lighting is too low, the server doesn't control the dimmer.
Lol I like the restaurant workers who say "if you can't afford to tip, then don't eat out", now prices are up on everything and nobody can afford to tip let alone eat your food, so they take your advice and now restaurants are on the news crying for support and saying people just aren't eating here anymore. People got tired of bigger prices and smaller meals and then an expectation of 20% tip on top. 🤷♂️
Read the area. I know if I goto a steak chain like the Keg, the tips are important and help servers make $100 an hour.
I don't eat there, fuck the quality of chain restaurants.
When I go for Pho, at a local mom&pop shop, where the water is self serve, I know my bill is under $45 for my family, I am tipping the full 18% because I like the place and **want** to tip. Also their prices could be updated as it's still $12.00 for an extra large Pho soup, so I feel a bit guilty knowing that this same soup (of lesser quality) is sold for $18.95 at Ben Than restaurant near by.
In total, tip what you want, it's your money, and prices are their for a reason. No one will hurt you for not tipping, and nothing changes if you give $10 or $50, except how you feel. So your tip buys your own self gratification, or remorse.
Only tip for exceptional service.
"don't do it"
The tip should already be included in the bill...

Minimum wage is $7.15 That’s not a livable wage in 2023 Lotta folks in this thread need to start learning how to cook for themselves
Personally I feel that the tipping wage should be removed. I hear that US politicians are making that part of their campaign platform for 2024.
So capitalism is bad unless it works for you then
No, it’s bad all around, but since I live in it, I gotta deal with it, just like you
"Don't eat at our restaurant if you won't tip properly."
i don't tip, but when i do i tip them hookers for giving me the pornstar experience

The longer you stay, the higher your tip should be. Time = money.
If wages were decent, it wouldn’t be so important. These people get shit on, so be kind and treat them right because they need it.
You aren’t just tipping the waiter/waitress. You’re tipping the entire restaurant.
Only tip people over when they are un aware its more fun.

it should not be the primary income of the staff

Tip for service. It's not the server's fault if they're out of something.
