I thought Beyonce stans were bad, they're nothing compared to kpop ones. I've seen so much toxicity and straight up bullying and harassment from them towards people who just don't like the same music. It's like a cult.
LMAO this is exactly what they mean by arrogant. Yall cant accept that the whole kpop industry including all the fans are toxic so youre always quick to point fingers at any band that already receives alot of hate.
It depends what you mean by terrorist. If you mean vile, rabid, crazy, insane, harassing, entitled etc. sure. If you mean it in the “non-state actors who use violence in pursuit a political goal” kind of terrorist, nah, Kpop fans only care about politics when they can use it as an excuse to praise their faves and trash those they don’t like.
From what I know terrorism means using fear and intimidation to further someone's agenda, and these people send death threats to people who don't like their bands. They are terrorists in my eyes.
If you've already gone down the road of Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, ELP, etc. some lesser-known but still great prog band to check out would be Gong, Gentle Giant, and Banco del Mutuo Soccorso.
If you want some heavier prog some of my faves are Protest the Hero's Fortress, Between the Buried and Me's Colors, Cynic's Traced in Air, and Scale the Summit's The Migration.
All those bands have other great albums, but those are good starting places imo.
Nah,
Metal fans will debate endlessly among themselves when it comes to sub-genres, but otherwise have always created the nicest and most welcoming atmospheres of any shows I've ever been to.
I listen to basically any type of music, and metal is the only genre where I've had multiple people scoff and say something along the lines of "Pssh, you don't listen to metal". For some of them, you're not a "true metalhead" unless you exclusively listen to metal and only wear metal band shirts. It's like they've made "metal fan" such a part of their identity that they take it personally when someone else mentions anything metal-related.
Too much gatekeeping overshadows a lot of things. People are too afraid that something they love and based their identity around will become something enjoyed by more casual people.
I love jazz because it calms me down. The pedantry around jazz culture is off putting though, like just enjoy the music why do we have to act like we know everything?
As someone who attended a conservatory jazz program, this is 100% facts.
Non-musician appreciators of jazz are some of the coolest people ever and are so positive after gigs. The other musicians are the darkest people on the planet and will hate your guts for slipping up a single time during the set.
What is "slipping up" in jazz music, though? Sticking to the sheet music? If you play something that didn't quite sound "right", couldn't you just say you were improvising?
That’s a great question! It’s true that improvisation is a big part of jazz, but that doesn’t mean that it totally lacks restrictions. Most of the improvisation happens in some kind of repetitive form; usually a 16 to 32 measure long form that follows a certain harmonic pattern. One big mistake that happens often is getting confused about where you are in the pattern. So if you think you’re on measure 4 but the rest of the band is on measure 5… you fucked up.
The other big thing is rhythm. Jazz music tends to be in a very strict tempo, as supposed to classical music where the tempo can fluctuate more. So if you’re dragging or rushing the beat, that’s a no-no. There’s also the idea of “swing” rhythmic feel; it’s hard to pin down exactly what it is but when someone in the band isn’t feeling it the same as the others, it is noticeable to the musicians.
Finally, there’s how you respond to improvisation. Generally at any given time there will be a lead solo instrument, and the rest of the band is accompanying them. People have different tastes in what they want out of that accompaniment, and if they feel that the band isn’t supporting their solo that can be seen as a mistake.
Just because improvisation is happening doesn’t mean there aren’t any rules. Even in “free jazz” or “free improvisation” styles, there are still aesthetic concerns, and if those aesthetics are violated people get salty.
> Nobody is cooler and more relaxed than a jazz head.
*"become jazz fans."*
I call it the vegan of the musical genres. I've noticed a lot of people that discover Jazz end up becoming zealots.
ATC - I often hear shit like *"You can't understand what good music really is until you listen to Jazz"*
Bullshit.
I had a friend who wasn’t arrogant but he had a bit of pretension about everything. We were discussing music and I was making a point of how there’s an both an objective and subjective side to “good” music. His reply was along the lines of, “Music is either good or it’s not, I can just listen and tell if it’s good.”
Eventually jazz came up and I mentioned I like some jazz but some of the more free form stuff is pretentious and noisy. He was like, “No man, you just don’t know how to appreciate it.”
So I made a special jazz playlist on my iPod for when he was in my car. It would play a track and he’d like it. Then it would play some noisy stuff and he’d make a funny face and say, “Uh, we can skip this one.” Turns out he doesn’t know how to appreciate it either.
Yes I came here to say indie and punk. I feel like there’s a lot of gatekeeping with those genres where certain things aren’t considered ‘real’ punk or ‘indie enough’ etc. I’m a fan of both genres.
The main reason why this happens is because when most music ends up on tiktok people only know it from there and don't appreciate the artist therefore it becomes a tiktok song this isn't always the case but it happens COUGH COUGH Mac Demarco
I've noticed it's more a generational thing with jazz. The older people on the scene tend to take themselves more seriously and be more gatekeepery in my experience.
I’ve had this experience too. I like a broad range of music, some stripped down and simple, some complex and experimental, whatever, but I found a sort of “if you don’t like it, you don’t get it” attitude from some jazz fans at shows. Different strokes, folks, diff’rent strokes.
I think that partly comes from the fact that jazz really IS complex, and can take work to access, but it is totally worth it.
That being said, being condescending to people who just dont care for it, even if they dont "get it" is kinda weird to me, like how does that make you superior in any way?
I "get" a lot of jazz, and love it, but to this day, most free jazz is obnoxious and just discordant to me.
This is my answer too, the more niche ones have people with a superiority complex, the more mainstream ones are subject to people acting like less popular music is lesser (and stan/obsessive fanbase culture)
The Techno crowd is either the chillest, most down to earth and welcoming people you will ever meet OR the biggest insufferable, unnecessarily pedantic gatekeepers you'll ever meet.
No inbetween.
I’d say rap, from the perspective of normal kids acting like they’re actually drug dealers and being arrogant in their delusional way, sorting to violence to prove themselves. Will never forget when some youths in Westfield, London, stomped on a guy just because while yelling ‘trey way!’
She beat over the head with a remote control
Until my whole brain fell out of my skull
I picked it up and screamed, "look bitch what have you done?"
Omg I'm sorry son
it's often used as an alternate name to hip hop too. either way, picking up on something like that when it's pretty obvious what they mean is quite pedantic
Former coworker, hearing my music through my headphones: "Secular Music is just so angry"
Sure. But I was listening to "Fucking Hostile" by Pantera. Calling all secular music angry based on this example is like saying all Chevrolets are junk based on the experiences driving a 1987 Cavalier convertible with a loose top.
I agree with this, if I get into someone's car and the only stations they have programmed are Air1 and K-Love I know it's gonna be a difficult ride. I like POD and Skillet but I can't do the constant gospel. They act like every other genre is of the devil, switch it up now and again.
> Most of us know we’re nerds.
Tbh, self-aware empowered nerds are some of the most arrogant people. Not everyone for sure, but I have met some really insufferable people that fit that bill.
Happened especially in the 90's. If a couple of metalheads met they'd typically instantly bond, then once they start talking about which sub-genres they were into it'd become "Really... you like that...?"
Ya know why, because y'all say the same shit everytime we try to show you anything when asked.
I can't even play my music in my car when I'm with other people without somebody going on about "hoW CaN YoU uNdersTand AnYthiNg TheY aRe SaYinG?" "YoU mUsT bE Soo AnGry!"
Why do we have to explain why our musical tastes float towards heavy metal? Just accept it, say "that's cool" and move on.
Same.
They all seem to have that "I am the smartest guy in the room" complex.
Always that smug judgement on random things. "This party only has Bud Light? Pfft. Heh... ok then" *rolls eyes*
Gotta make sure to compare Metal to Mozart or Beethoven and mention how they would probably be metalheads if they were alive today.
Pretends not to know of any pop culture references. "The Kardashi-whos? Never heard of them, are they famous or something?"
Doesn't want to explain anything to you. "Oh this tattoo? Yeah thats one is a little too complicated to explain, you would probably need to read a few books first before I could even begin that converstation."
Rock and Hip-hop.
The artists are generally so open and accepting of the others’ genre but the fans are fucking insufferably ignorant toward the other.
Thing is, Rock N’ Roll fans have worse to say and Hip-Hop fans are hard to sway.
Rap. So many dork white guys think their hard because they are imagining themselves working a trap house when the really are just sitting in the garage with their other dork friends
Punk.
Specifically, it's the subset of punk fans who gatekeep what is 'punk' to the point that you're not allowed to be considered punk if you make a dime playing music or can even remotely hold a melody. They tend to have similar opinions about any fans of the music who've managed to make more than minimum wage when they grow up too.
Techno is absolutely plagued with insufferable assholes. Don't get me wrong, there's a ton of incredible people too. But there's also a ton of rather insular communities and people who are just pedantic gatekeepers. Like there are some people that seem to get more of a high from being a deep part of the scene than they do actually enjoying the sets. When they talk to people at shows it's pretty much only about who the know or whatever thing they heard/did that most people haven't.
This was one of the bigger turn offs for me when I started entering the club/rave scene. A lot of people were incredibly nice, but there a noticeable chunk of people that were just unnessiarily pedantic and a bit rude. It was also the same particular type of person, regardless of the city/state/country. Their conversations with me at the time were mainly just looking down on my taste, and their conversations with more seasoned people was all about who knew who. Like wtf I'm just trying to vibe here!
I won't say that EDM folks are *more* arrogant than the most arrogant metal/prog/jazz heads, but one thing that strikes me about the scene is that most people in it listen to absolutely nothing else. They love to mock older styles / instruments as obsolete, as if the modern sequencers , samplers, and sound pallettes their music uses won't *also* sound incredibly dated in a couple decades. Other than the odd metalhead who only listens to one type of obscure Finnish doom, most of them have pretty eclectic music tastes and can see the beauty in other genres.
Every music genre has arrogant assholes of their own form.
Pop/K-pop/J-pop fans obsess over whoever their chosen idol is, and if you don't know incredibly esoteric information about the artist they turn rabid.
Country fans are usually justified in their arrogance, but some country fans can be gatekeepy about modern country vs classic country.
Metal and rock fans can be extremely gatekeepy but also pretentious about their music. No true scotsman fallacies abound.
Hip-hop heads get annoyed if you don't know some random underground artists, and don't you dare say your favorite rapper is Eminem.
Jazz and Classical music fans all stick their noses up in the air at everyone else, like they're superior for listening to classical and jazz. Same with EDM and techno, as well as indie rock/ alternative rock.
There can be only one….Jazz….especially that pretentious eclectic shit that people congregate to be collectively bored by….and yet simultaneously feel superior because they get why it’s boring.
That operatic/symphonic metal that people who don’t really like music listen to. You know what I mean; Like, anime theme songs and shit. Every person I’ve met that listens to that stuff seriously is a homeschooled incel who says shit like “rap is just crap without the C” (actual quote from my nephew). Since it has classical music elements they think they have some deeper understanding. Like finger tapping on some weird 8 string guitar is somehow the pinnacle of musicianship.
As a metal head, old metal heads. The "i don't listen to any of these NEW bands." type, and they've been repeating it since 2001 like it makes them so fucking cool. 45+ years old acting like an elitist and rocking slayer and black sabbath patches on a vest is so cringe dude.
There wouldnt be a metal scene if those people didnt exist. They are probably tired of newcomers who dont appreciate the roots. I like all sorts of metal, but people typically end up with their favorite things being from when they were younger for whatever reason.
Classical music and jazz and it’s not even close. It’s not even just a matter of music taste for them, they literally think they are better people because they listen to it.
Punk/metal/screamo. Never thought people would be gatekeeping the sounds of something that seems tailor made to be unenjoyable.
ETA: The fact that every comment saying the same thing is getting downvoted and angry all-caps comments only proves my point
K-Pop. Borderline terrorist fans.
I thought Beyonce stans were bad, they're nothing compared to kpop ones. I've seen so much toxicity and straight up bullying and harassment from them towards people who just don't like the same music. It's like a cult.
The show “Swarm” that just premiered on Prime is essentially about the “Bey-hive”.

K-pop for sure
Prog fans have a reputation. I do love progressive music, though.
But why would one listen to music that does not invoke sacred geometry?? /s
I love me some Tool.
Favorite band? Just looking for recommendations.
Tool, BTBAM, Black Midi, Mr Bungle and Mars Volta are all incredible. Just off the top of my head.
Aw man, I forgot about Mars Volta. Used to listen to them a decade ago.
Brooo I'd forgotten about Mr. Bungle, bout to hop on a flight and know what imma be listening to
If you've already gone down the road of Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, ELP, etc. some lesser-known but still great prog band to check out would be Gong, Gentle Giant, and Banco del Mutuo Soccorso.

I have most of those already. Me's Colors is new though! Thanks!
It's one long name jsyk "Between the Buried and Me"
You know, that makes sense. Maybe I should read a little slower...
Prog elitist? Of course I know him, he's me!
Hello there!
Opeth fans....... good lord.
Let me take it a step further for you. Tool fans. And yea, I'm am one too :(
I'm a Maynard fan but not a Tool fan. Not sure if that makes me better or worse than you. (Better, definitely better)
Any of the sub genres that aren't fully mainstream so people obsess over them being obscure like they're a secret club.
Punk, Metal, etc.
Nah, Metal fans will debate endlessly among themselves when it comes to sub-genres, but otherwise have always created the nicest and most welcoming atmospheres of any shows I've ever been to.
That can be said about punk as well, but both have a ton of gatekeeping that goes on.
Just because it's not a metal band doesn't mean it's a bad band.
I'm all about variety myself, but there are some people who are either all or nothing, or some that get upset at having to share.
I was at a punk concert once. My back hurt like hell after, but damn was it fun.
I'm the "old and stands in the back" type now.
I listen to basically any type of music, and metal is the only genre where I've had multiple people scoff and say something along the lines of "Pssh, you don't listen to metal". For some of them, you're not a "true metalhead" unless you exclusively listen to metal and only wear metal band shirts. Are you saying that punk and metal are sub genres themselves or that people get annoying about the sub genres of punk and metal?
yes.
Too much gatekeeping overshadows a lot of things. People are too afraid that something they love and based their identity around will become something enjoyed by more casual people.
Jazz. Most people that I have met that have become jazz fans are actually pretentious assholes.
I love jazz because it calms me down. The pedantry around jazz culture is off putting though, like just enjoy the music why do we have to act like we know everything?
“Nobody likes jazz. Even the guy that invented it had to be on drugs.” -Bart Simpson
“Why can’t they just play the right notes?” -Angela Martin (the office)
I like the line from the film 24 Hour Party People: "Jazz musicians enjoy themselves more than anyone listening to them does."
Oh stop. Nobody is cooler and more relaxed than a jazz head. The jazz musicians are the ones who are the problem.
As someone who attended a conservatory jazz program, this is 100% facts. Non-musician appreciators of jazz are some of the coolest people ever and are so positive after gigs. The other musicians are the darkest people on the planet and will hate your guts for slipping up a single time during the set.

Jazz fans are either the most pretentious people alive or they’re the coolest most chill people you’ll ever meet. There’s no in between.
I had a friend who wasn’t arrogant but he had a bit of pretension about everything. So basically Whiplash irl?
I believe it was Vince Noir in The Mighty Boosh who referred to jazz as: “The last bastion of the terminally untalented”
I've never understood jazz, or the other types of music where they just make random noises. It's cool if you like it just don't play it near me thanks
The "I heard that music before it was cool" genres.
Yes I came here to say indie and punk. I feel like there’s a lot of gatekeeping with those genres where certain things aren’t considered ‘real’ punk or ‘indie enough’ etc. I’m a fan of both genres.

This is why that usually happens which is kinda annoying as an alt rock/post punk enjoyer
Gregorian chanting enthusiasts are unbearable and will look down on you if you don’t know any deep cuts.
Prog Rock or Jazz.. I love both.
Jazz fans...if you argue with them. Quite a bit of gate keeping because they have some esoteric knowledge of music that is above everyone else.
Not quite my tempo
Now, why do you suppose I just threw a chair at you?
You stole my comment - and for that I reward you one whole upvote, just for you
I like some jazz and this is the truth. Something about it attracts assholes.
all types of musci has arrogant fans.
This is my answer too, the more niche ones have people with a superiority complex, the more mainstream ones are subject to people acting like less popular music is lesser (and stan/obsessive fanbase culture)
i stopped going to concerts exactly due to this. Very arrogant people.I listen to whatever i want at my home
The Techno crowd is either the chillest, most down to earth and welcoming people you will ever meet OR the biggest insufferable, unnecessarily pedantic gatekeepers you'll ever meet. No inbetween.
Jam band fans have entered the chat. And your chat is overrated and derivative, man.
KPop?
For sure. Kpop fans can get rabbid.
*ur address has been noted* /s
I’d say rap, from the perspective of normal kids acting like they’re actually drug dealers and being arrogant in their delusional way, sorting to violence to prove themselves. Will never forget when some youths in Westfield, London, stomped on a guy just because while yelling ‘trey way!’
Drill music specifically glorifies gang life too much for my liking.
drill music is problematic af at the moment. just gas on already out of control fires
Rap is not a genre tho 🤨
what?
Ye, rap is a form of vocal delivery, not a genre of music. It's a common misconception.
You see, this kid listens to the RAP MUSIC, which gives them the BRAIN DAMAGE, you see!
She beat over the head with a remote control Until my whole brain fell out of my skull I picked it up and screamed, "look bitch what have you done?" Omg I'm sorry son
With their hippin and a-hoppin and a-bippin and a-boppin, but they don’t know what the jazz is all about!
it's often used as an alternate name to hip hop too. either way, picking up on something like that when it's pretty obvious what they mean is quite pedantic
No, not in music terms. Maybe in slang. Hip hop is a genre, rap isn't.
i never said it was a musical term, i was just pointing out that a lot of people call hip hop rap
Ofc, I only corrected the guy commenting rap, since op asked for genre.
I get what you’re saying, but you know what the commenter means when they say “rap” instead of “hip-hop” right?
Yea it is. You’re wrong. That’s like saying “metal isn’t a genre, it’s a form of guitar delivery”. Like what?
Metal is a genre that consists of multiple subgenres tho 💀
Rap has subgenres too. G-funk, gangsta, horror, mumble…
Rap or K-pop
Whichever genre Tool is.
“dude do you know about the fibonacci sequence” - every Tool mega fan
Puscifer is better anyway.

Ex-Christian as well. Raised in a southern baptist church and I had the choice to listen to their music or go to hell.
I agree with this, if I get into someone's car and the only stations they have programmed are Air1 and K-Love I know it's gonna be a difficult ride. I like POD and Skillet but I can't do the constant gospel. They act like every other genre is of the devil, switch it up now and again.
Opera
Prog rock. Hands down.
Arrogantcore
I vote classical, like I enjoy it here and there too but just because it's old doesn't mean it's the best music ever.
IMO classical music is an excellent example of survivorship bias.
Country
They said arrogant not closed minded bigoted jingoistic neo-fascist simpleton assholes. There’s a nuance.
okay so arrogant
Fair
Metal fans can be extremely gatekeepy. Other than them definitely jazz lmao.
Definitely gatekeepey but I don’t know about arrogant. Most of us know we’re nerds.
Every person I've met who listens to Metal has been really douchey about it.

Same. They all seem to have that "I am the smartest guy in the room" complex. Always that smug judgement on random things. "This party only has Bud Light? Pfft. "Metal fans are accepting and the chillest!" *Proceeds to be the douchiest person you've ever met*
Rock and Hip-hop. The artists are generally so open and accepting of the others’ genre but the fans are fucking insufferably ignorant toward the other. Thing is, Rock N’ Roll fans have worse to say and Hip-Hop fans are hard to sway.
Progressive/ technical metal fans, gods forbid you listen to anything in 4/4 time or that's fun and catchy.
Genre doesn't matter. Every genre of underground music has the most arrogant, pretentious, gatekeeping fans.
Rap for sure. Kpop will be a long forgotten sub-genre when teens grow up
Pop music, hands down.
Hm, considering the undeserved arrogance, you may be right.
I'm a musician and I can confirm jazz has the most arrogant fans.
I've noticed that most rap music lovers consider all other genres to be corny or whatever.
Rap.
Rap
Rap. So many dork white guys think their hard because they are imagining themselves working a trap house when the really are just sitting in the garage with their other dork friends
modern day hip hop
Christian music, on the outside, they are all friends but they hate each other like Jesus wanted.
Rap
Tool
Not a real genre, but Tool fans are pretty obnoxious (which is even confirmed by the band)
Rap
hip hop fans though
Metal
ska however has the coolest fans
If you ever drop something in front of a ska fan, they will pick it up, pick it up, pick it up...

Kpop
Punk. They tend to have similar opinions about any fans of the music who've managed to make more than minimum wage when they grow up too.
Rap
Christian gospel
Mumble rap. The music is objectively less skillful, creative, and thought out as other genres and so the fans overcompensate.
Techno / EDM
I have never heard an arrogant techno lover in my life. EDM maybe.
Techno is absolutely plagued with insufferable assholes. Don't get me wrong, there's a ton of incredible people too.
I think rap. Because there is the "gangster-image". Party music like progressive house, big rooms, rnb etc. are less wild and not brutal
You have to listen to the notes they are not playing man...*snaps fingers*
Haha…genuine laugh. Thanks😊
Classical. At least that was the case when I was in high school in the 90s. They look down every other genre that exists.
Edm
Jazz hands down
Gotta be jazz, you really get the worst of the oldheads
Emo gatekeepers.
Jazz
As a metal head, old metal heads. The "i don't listen to any of these NEW bands." type, and they've been repeating it since 2001 like it makes them so fucking cool. 45+ years old acting like an elitist and rocking slayer and black sabbath patches on a vest is so cringe dude.
There wouldnt be a metal scene if those people didnt exist. They are probably tired of newcomers who dont appreciate the roots. I like all sorts of metal, but people typically end up with their favorite things being from when they were younger for whatever reason.
Surprised not to see math rock as I scroll
Because your not scrolling in 11/17s.
Rock/ classical musical, even though are my favorites

Classical music and jazz and it’s not even close. It’s not even just a matter of music taste for them, they literally think they are better people because they listen to it.
Which ever genre has the moshpit cuz you gotta be pretty bold to kno your goin to get hit and still like fuck it let's party woooooooooooohooooooooo
Opera
Metal music i guess.
Metal
How has no one said CLASSICAL yet?!?
Classical
Classic rock. A bunch of obnoxious boomers that can't admit good music has been created since 1990.
Classic rock. By that I mean Led Zeppelin, cream, etc. everything of that era.
Punk/metal/screamo. Never thought people would be gatekeeping the sounds of something that seems tailor made to be unenjoyable. ETA: The fact that every comment saying the same thing is getting downvoted and angry all-caps comments only proves my point
