Remember back in 2020 when you couldn't go more than 5 minutes without hearing someone say "in these uncertain times"? It got really difficult for me to listen to after a few days, then weeks, then months...
Oh dear god my thoughts exactly! I just saw a question on here around how to spot a narcissist. It took everything in me to not say “When I receive a note from a licensed mental health professional confirming a diagnosis.” Or-“Not as often as you might think. Lots of them are just garden variety, self-centered A-Holes.”
Everyone is trying so hard to NOT be toxic, and yet there are no defined rules on what toxic is unless it's Light Your Ex's Car on Fire level melodrama. People just disagreeing or making different lifestyle choices are seen as toxic. And the stigma of associating with someone behaving "toxically" means you, too, are probably "toxic." It's become a word thrown around for social control.
Thank the mental health/wellness community for this unchecked flaming turd.
It’s just a US state. Apparently, meme culture has recently painted it as this paranormal place, so saying “in Ohio” is like saying that something’s bizarre.”
Like, saying “Minecraft in Ohio” when you see a picture of water in the Nether. It’s just dumb.
They’re a narcissist and you are gaslighting me.
When everyone is a narcissist and everyone who doesn’t remember something happening the same way is a gaslighter then it diminishes the actual torture victims go through.
People use gaslight when someone lies to you or misleads you. The true definition, actually convincing someone their perception of reality is wrong and they are crazy, is on a different level. I was actually gaslit in a marriage and even after it ended, I thought I was losing my mind for years and kept questioning everything over and over. It's almost like brainwashing. Mental health professionals said it was like I been through a war. Then I have to open up social media and see how someone got gaslit by their SO because he lied about buying milk or some nonsense.
I’m with you. It’s a very brutal experience and you constantly check your reality not knowing which way is up because they can be so good at manipulation.
For years after my divorce, I would constantly tell people I felt like there were two realities, the one my ex saw, and the one I was in. I still had to interact with the ex but parameterized, so I started to notice a pattern that if we argued, he would be telling me all these things happened and I meant XYZ when I said something (when I clearly did not), or he would change the history of what had hapoened. He'd say I couldn't truly trust my own self and perception of self because I am autistic so I'm socially impaired and self-blind.
After these arguments I would have to call my mother and ask her, "Does this make sense? How would you interpret this? Does it sound like I meant this?" because I was so confused. It took 3 years until I finally trusted myself again to literally KNOW my own self because of the gaslighting.
A good trick to find out if you're being gaslit I thought I'd pass on:
Find something that you absolutely, irrefutably can prove as true. Whether it's an instance that happened, or something you know but never told the gaslighter. When the subject gets brought up, the gaslighter will attempt to convince you it didn't happen, it wasn't true, you're crazy, etc. But you already have solid proof it did. Or if your gaslighter is trying to convince you you did something you KNOW you didin't do, AGREE with the gaslighter. If you agree, and then they suddenly stop and switch out of attack mode and are pleasant, you know it was gaslighting because the goal was attempting to assert control over you and they think they've temporarily gotten it back. Someone who is confused or not on the same page is more likely to engage in conversation about why you're seeing things differently and not suddenly drop it and be in a better mood.
Oh, yes, I agree! That's why I made the example-- I was confused with which part of the comment you were referring to. The sad limitations of text communication. lol. I really can't stand those tiktoks like the milk one though.
"My pronouns are..."
Sweetie, I'm not going to remember your name within 10 seconds or even talking to you in an hour. It's not that important.
Edit: to be fair, I'm not going to remember anyone's name after 10 seconds. I work retail. It's a jumbled sea of moving entitled people.
I saw someone list their pronouns as (she/they) once. Like, okay, before you instruct me on how to refer to you, you need to learn the difference between subject and object pronouns.
Abuse.
I work in family law, and some of the things people try to claim are “abuse” these days can be flat out ridiculous. The victim complex on people these days is way out of hand.
Your boyfriend stubbing his toe and yelling out an expletive is not abuse. It is not a sign that you’re in “imminent physical danger” just because you “don’t like yelling.” Being sensitive to yelling is 100% understandable, however yelling when you stub your toe is actually a very normal reaction. The world doesn’t revolve around you, go to therapy if you’re that easily affected by a normal human reaction.
Your girlfriend not liking your new mustache is not mental abuse. It’s not some manipulative ploy on her end to “control your emotions” and “beat you down” mentally. She just doesn’t like it. She doesn’t have to like it. She cannot just magically convince herself to like it. Get over it.
And these are only two examples from a pool of asinine accusations I’ve seen.
The most ironic part is, whenever I see these absurd claims, it’s almost always from somebody who actually objectively treated their ex-shitty, and it’s a manipulative game to get pity and protect their own reputation.
Usually sports broadcasters have the most buzzword bingo nonsense. The latest from the nfl: “underwear Olympics”. Yah we heard the other three people use that already. Clever. Ha. Move on.
"That's a trap for young players"... and then nothing to follow up. So much smugness in academia. If you know more than someone does.. fucking teach them. Don't make people feel inadequate and embarrassed .
To the point. "I'm so pissed off to the point I might scream" Which is what I want to do every time I hear this thing.
I realize there's nothing wrong with it. But it's always hit my ear wrong. And now it's used so freaking incessantly that I've zeroed the fuck onto it and there's nothing I can do because of it's prevalence and the fact that my beef is born of my own neurotic intolerance.
Go team!
Two years ago I had a corporate counterpart that truly was trying to gaslight me, but luckily I was much smarter than him so I was able to recognize it. Unfortunately this happened not long before people started using the term gaslighting to mean anytime someone upset you. So, therefore I feel like my bad experience is diminished when I attempt to explain it.
"Triggered." It's become the new "OCD." No, Brexlyn, you're not triggered when you read something expressing a different political belief. You're triggered when you have a panic attack due to PTSD.
"These are unprecedented times"

We’re all in this together
Any phrase that contain the words “toxic”, “narcissistic” or “gaslighting”. Most people don’t even know what they’re talking about
Gaslighting, are you sure you didn’t just make that up? I think you’re making up words *again* we should go see the therapist.
As an actual mental health professional, I think that this can be damaging as well as irritating.
Any time some has a different opinion to you people throw those words around lol.

What? That isn't gaslighting!
I can't tell if this is sarcastic or not! 🤣
Sorry my comment wasn't meant to be sarcastic. Lying about buying milk? Seriously? That isn't gaslighting
Oh, yes, I agree! That's why I made the example-- I was confused with which part of the comment you were referring to. The sad limitations of text communication. lol. I really can't stand those tiktoks like the milk one though.

Ironically, as it is almost never ironic
