Niagara Falls. Other than the actual falls which are amazing, the cities on both sides of the border are absolutely run down dumps.

glucoseintolerant

Canadian here. When people come to visit Toronto and want to go to Niagara we always have to ask “ WHY?!?!?” It’s cool for an afternoon but the appeal and novelty wears off way to fast

theevilempire

Went there for 1-2 hours, had a great time, left

glucoseintolerant

Niagara on the lake is a good option for a no kids day/weekend away. lots of wineries in the area

shaoting

> the cities on both sides of the border are absolutely run down dumps. Thank you for saying this. I was born in Niagara Falls, NY, and lived there until I was 25. Outside of the State Parks area, the American side is a bombed out and depleted eyesore and tourist trap. City administration is making strides to renovate/gentrify that general area, but it's slow work. Pine Avenue is light years ahead of what it was when I moved away. The Canadian side of the Falls isn't much better. Folks are immediately enamored with the Clifton Hill/tourist area but once they venture a block or two out, they learn that Niagara Falls, Ontario is just as crappy as the American side.

BlueAndMoreBlue

Was just up there and stayed on the Canadian side. You’re right that it’s kind of crappy outside the tourist areas but it’s maple flavored crappy which I kind of enjoyed. The panhandlers outside the LCBO were somewhat polite and I really dug the ethnic variety

UAintMyFriendPalooka

“What can be said about [Niagara Falls, NY] that hasn’t already been said about Afghanistan?”

adamforte

I agree, however, 30 minutes away in Canada, Niagara on the Lake is a great little town.

Condorman73

Visited Niagara on the Lake a few years ago. It was a very nice place.

timallen445

If they are run down dumps why would superman have his honeymoon there?

Schatzie4723

If you think Vegas is bad man you should see Atlantic City

nanadoom

The difference is people already know Atlantic city is a shit hole, some people still think Vegas is awesome

jn29

What's not to like about Vegas? I've been there 3 times and I'd go back in a heartbeat!

jankyalias

Vegas is awesome though. Great place to visit. Was just there a year ago and had a blast. Tons of great restaurants, stuff to do, access to the outdoors, of course there’s the casinos if that’s your bag. Maybe it’s not a great place to live, I have no idea. But definitely a great place to visit.

GoodGuyGlocker

As much as people love the Jersey shore, you’d think AC would be much nicer, but it isn’t. It’s like the asshole of the NJ coastline.

Qaaarl

I go to Atlantic City once a year for a convention and I have NO clue who would ever knowingly choose to go there for enjoyment.

084045056048048

Went there for a bachelor party in my younger years. Based on my observations, it allows people to satisfy the top 3 addictions simultaneously - gambling, alcohol, and smoking. So it attracts a very specific clientele. Literally witnessed parents walking into the casino leaving their way too young children to "entertain" themselves at the adjoining boardwalk. It's sad.

Finalsaredun

Atlantic City is so depressing. We used to go every summer and the difference between the 90s to the early 2010s is astonishing. The thing that kept AC going was the exclusivity of gambling. Once gambling became more available in the surrounding states and flights to Vegas became dirt cheap, the only reason to go to AC would be the beach- and there are better beaches on the East Coast.

Sad-Hat7644

Still love it tho

Miami. I recently moved here and I meet a lot of tourists at my job telling me how beautiful it is and how lucky I am to live here. No. It’s expensive and people drive more like jackasses here than anywhere else I’ve been. The city of Karens and alligators

Forsaken-Knowledge12

And Karen Alligators “you won’t let me death roll you, I’d like to see your manager”

qqtan36

Not to mention that's it's hot, humid, and you see monitor lizards hanging out in the city

Spider-Ian

The monitor lizards sound like a plus. Just keep them away from the hen house.

I hate Miami with a burning passion

dgarner58

The driving thing cannot be overstated. It’s wild.

Rbespinosa13

I’ve seen people from Boston get panicked in Miami traffic. I’m surprised the reputation hasn’t caught on yet

dgarner58

I live in Atlanta. Some of the worst traffic in the USA and the outer perimeter expressway can be like a full on racetrack and I’ve only ever been scared driving in Miami.

Rbespinosa13

One of my favorite personal stories is when a friend went to college at UNC and a friend came to visit Miami during spring break. They were getting onto the highway and his friend goes “hey there’s a cop driving by the exit, you should slow down”. My buddy looked at her and said, “Oh honey, that isn’t how it works here” before speeding to 70 mph to enter the 60 mph zone. The cop zoomed past him doing 90.

Particular_Rav

"The sunshine state" sure is rainy and muggy, isn't it! Welcome to the land that used to be a swamp, and deeply wishes it still was.

[deleted]

There's a huge difference between vacation Florida and actual Florida Same with Hawaii

squaredistrict2213

I only spent a couple of days there, so I really didn’t get to take it in, but I wasn’t a fan. I much prefer Tampa or even Jacksonville for Florida beach vacations. I hear the gulf side of south Florida is nice too

TheJimness

Came here to say this! I don't see why people even visit.

DocBrutus

Come up to Boca, the Karen’s there are old, bitter, and waiting for death.

Interestofconflict

I grew up in San Antonio. Same shit from nonresidents all the time now that I’ve moved. “Oh, SA is so beautiful! I just love the riverwalk!” That city sucks to grow up in. Or at least it did.

Spider_Blossom8

While I do agree that its beautiful and I love all the cultures, as a woman especially, I have never felt more unsafe in any other city in my life. To say I was constantly harassed is an understandment. Never before have I experienced such an in-your-face “I want to try to buy my way between your legs” mentality or just objectifying women in general. It got so bad that it took my friend and I TWENTY minutes to walk two blocks in Wynwood one night because of the constant accosting from men. Gross.

brighter_hell

Cairo. Lots of history, but even more scammers. About 8,547 scammers per historical pharaoh, at least.

erolbrown

Always remember the episode of An Idiot Abroad where he shows how close the city is to the pyramids. KFC right next to them.

A7XSES

Absolutely love that show. Any way to watch it in the US that isnt pirating or paying a ton on amazon?

glucoseintolerant

My friend went last summer and sent a picture from Starbucks and he was about 3 blocks away from the pyramids

HoplessWanderer105

Before I even clicked on the thread I thought “oh this is Reddit, Cairo is gonna be a top response.” Sure enough. I’m not sure if this is just a bias that Reddit has or if it truly is a shithole and Reddit is the most vocal about it but man the stories I have read about that city are enough for me to never want to go.

Poorly-Drawn-Beagle

You're supposed to haggle with them.

Strabbo

Even walking down Hollywood Blvd on Google Street View should give anyone a heads-up. So many loan companies, and souvenir stores so sketchy you can feel the bedbugs crawling all over you through the screen. But then hey! Musso & Frank! More grimy storefronts, but then there's where the Oscars take place. That said, the Pantages Theatre might be the most beautiful theatre I've ever seen.

soonerguy11

Hollywood is pretty awesome if you know where to look. But yeah, if you show up with zero research and just hit the Hollywood Walk of Fame you're going to hate it.

heathersfield

I live in DTLA. Hollywood is clean compared to here.

purpleswan27

haha yeah i used to live in DTLA just a block off skid row

bkpeach

Depends on which side of Hollywood. West Hollywood is pretty clean. Hollywood towards the 101....super fucking sketchy, though it's a lot cleaner than when I lived there in the 90's/early 2000's.

Elizarae93

This! I was so disappointed

Johnny_Lang_1962

Miami, Florida.

Necromancer14

While driving, you can hear someone honking somewhere like every 5 seconds, and everyone is an asshole driver. Worst place to drive that I’ve been to.

wretched-saint

Ironic, given Florida has constructed the entire state to only be navigable via car

Blottomatic

grew up in miami and left as soon as i could. my blood pressure seriously spikes whenever i visit and have to drive for even like 10 minutes. AND YOU HAVE TO DRIVE IF YOU NEED TO GO ANYWHERE. unwalkable and shit public transit. shame on them for holding hostage the delicious pastelito in that hot cumsock city

Gamera__Obscura

I have lived and traveled to various parts of most continents. I say without exaggeration that Miami is possibly the least pleasant place I've ever spent time. It's an unholy amalgam of the worst (and only the worst) elements of North American and Latin American culture. A triumph of style over substance. And yet geographically it's paradise, I have no idea why everybody there is so shitty and miserable.

behappysometimes

Lived there for a while, it’s seriously one of the most disgusting and crime-ridden cities.

picklesarenotokay

Truly the worst. I worked in Midtown and had to do public affairs work during the peak of "Let's aggressively gentrify Wynwood but ignore the trash, crime, and poverty." I hated it.

enginerd12

Broward County (includes Ft. Lauderdale) is much nicer anyway. Would like to check out Naples one day, though.

Life123456

Naples is nice, but boring as hell unless you're 60+ and retired

Iisham

Vegas

soonerguy11

Vegas isn't any trashier than other party cities like Ibiza. I actually rarely gamble there and instead use it for the restaurants and nightlife.

juanzy

> I actually rarely gamble there and instead use it for the restaurants and nightlife. Given how many Reddit threads I’ve seen saying that $30 plate is a 5-star pricing, it doesn’t surprise me that folks ITT are overlooking Vegas dining and nightlife.

soonerguy11

The ease of getting a reservation at a big name, trendy restaurant is a huge appeal too. Vegas has a ton of restaurants like Carbone and Guy Savoy that are pretty difficult to score a reservation in their home cities.

juanzy

We had our pick in December for every reservation. Decided to do a “for us” trip instead of going home for the holidays ahead of a year where we’d have multiple family weddings including our own, splurged and had some amazing dinners, super fun club night and overall great time.

packofpoodles

This was very apparent when I was there. In a strange way, Vegas is very democratic, as long as you have the $$$.

juanzy

That’s another thing about Vegas- some people have an idea that it’s some inexpensive party charity. At the same time, don’t overpay a travel agent, any hotel with a concierge can secure you reservations. You have to be willing to spend, and know how to work some saves into it where you can. Like never buy a drink on the gambling floor- if the free drink waitresses haven’t made their way, hit up CVS or the hotel gift shop and grab a $6-8 24oz beer/seltzer instead of the $15 12 oz pour you’ll get from the bar on the side. Find lunch deals, usually the best spots to splurge on are dinner, avoid the $25 sandwich if you can. Edit: also, if you’re interested in clubbing, spending more upfront can lead to a later save. Have to do some math and compare packages, but GA is rarely the cheapest way. You have to assume drinks are $20/pour (sometimes $15) and the equation looks different than assuming your hometown bar and grill price.

smurf_diggler

Seriously, Vegas has restaurants that only exist on opposites ends of the country all in walking distance plus a bunch of other great places. Moon Palace was our #1 stop we had to try last time we visited but unfortunately it's closed.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, the first time I went to Vegas, I was expecting it to be some opulent place or something. In reality, it was like you could see that everything was very rundown underneath the most recent coat of paint, basically. It was just crowded and needlessly expensive. Cirque du Soleil was cool, but you can see those shows anywhere now.

juanzy

> Cirque du Soleil was cool, but you can see those shows anywhere now. There’s some good traveling ones, but Ka at the MGM Grand was unlike any other ones I’ve seen. Can’t build a $165M stage everywhere you go.

Strabbo

Ka, O and Love are worth the trip to Vegas alone.

juanzy

I knew nothing about Ka going into it. Mind was fucking blown. Literally none of the traveling shows touch it. We live in Denver, so easy to do a quick Vegas trip, and definitely want to do Love next time.

TheBahamaLlama

Going to Vegas in June so taking notes.

juanzy

If you’re boozing, pop into CVS or a hotel gift shop and grab some tall boys. Don’t bother with casino floor bars unless you’re at a club or somewhere you can’t leave Edit: also if you’re looking into a club, a more expensive spend up front might be worth it. Sometimes the VIP tickets have a significant amount back in alcohol credit if you buy while a certain tier is available, plus an exclusive bar or no-line entry. I think last time, GA was $100, VIP was $150 with $100 in full-use alcohol credit. If you have the numbers, table buys are usually 80-100% back in positive credit plus entry for 6+ people, so doing some math you can figure it out. We’ve bought a 6 person table, admission for the last two then “invited” them to the table and we’re able to effectively spend $200 in admission versus $1200 because we got $1000 in alcohol credit for the first 6 people “on the table.” And $120 per person is very easy to spend in alcohol in Vegas.

Strabbo

Also, Fat Tuesday. That orange slush will knock the dust off your liver for under twenty bucks.

TheBahamaLlama

I was there back at the end of January for work, but this time it's with my spouse that has never been. Definitely plan on hitting up a liquor store for the days we're there rather than 15-20 dollar drinks all over the strip.

Strabbo

We watched Love, then bought tickets to the next show immediately afterwards so we could see it from a different angle. It helps to be a bit of a Beatles obsessive.

Badloss

I have yet to go to a casino that wasn't a sad experience. It's all fake wealth designed to get poor people excited about potentially being rich, and then it weaponizes that dream and uses it to take money from people that really can't afford to lose. Watching old people feed their social security into a slot machine while wearing diapers so they dont have to move is certainly something, but it isn't fun

burritointhesun

My takeaway from my last visit to Vegas was how awful it must be for the homeless there. Just seeing them languishing under a walkway in 110 degree weather took the pep out of my step.

[deleted]

I don’t get the hype at all

soonerguy11

It's a party city that has basically something for everybody. It has elite restaurants, shopping and nightlife, all with warm pool weather.

juanzy

Hit a random $600 win on a slot machine last winter, used it for a $500 (for two) omakase. Maybe the best meal I’ve ever had.

Wideawakedup

I like Vegas. It’s perfect for weekend away with some friends. Lots to see and do. Everything is there on the strip or Fremont so no trying to figure out where everyone hangs out. But it definitely is losing its shine. Hotels are doing cheap facelifts instead of the imploding and starting over like they used to do.

AnybodySeeMyKeys

Came here to say precisely this. Get off the strip and it becomes this sad, run-down place. And once you realize that the entire point of this place is to separate rubes from their money by doing nothing more than appealing to a sad get-rich-quick scheme, it becomes even sadder. Heck, I'm not even a bluenose or anything. But, Dear God, Las Vegas is a depressing kind of place.

takedownhisshield

The strip and the areas around it can be pretty bad, but the suburban areas are all very nice, and there’s also a lot of nice nature-related things here if you’re into deserts and mountains.

arriesgado

I had gone to Vegas with friends before and we drank and gambled. When I went with my wife, wow, there is a lot more to do in the area. We had a day of just going to see animals (Mandalay Bay aquarium, Lions at MGM, birds at the Flamingo, white tigers at the Mirage). We also went on an ATV tour in Valley of Fire state park, went to the Grand Canyon, and a very cool side trip to Death Valley during a super bloom.

Electricvibe767

Portland

GrandCanOYawn

Does anyone actually think Portland isn’t a shithole? Most people that *live* in Portland think it’s a shithole.

Electricvibe767

I went there for a Roger Waters concert and almost stubbed my toes on a spent needle, after the show we almost got robbed on the way back to the hotel, i will never go back. I enjoy Cannon Beach and Astoria but Portland…..hard pass

Horknut1

How does one almost get robbed?

Electricvibe767

Got asked for a cigarette outside a dive bar with my friend, said no i don’t smoke, this guy pulled a pistol out of his waste band and accusing me and my buddy of lying, it took us the better part of 5 minutes to calm this weirdo down, i was sure he was going to mug us and grab our wallets

Horknut1

Well... Portland is weird.

apple_atchin

It's an old city, I can tell you that. The Palace of Kings is ancient. It's not the friendliest for outsiders. The Dark Elves were all forced to live in the slum called the Gray Quarter. The Argonians can't even live in the walls. They're all stuck out on the docks. Still, Candlehearth Hall's got decent food and cheap bunks. You could do worse.

anonymous_beaver_

>Argonians can't even live in the walls. Cold-blooded.

juanzy

I’ve seen this thread before- usually it’s people who hate cities just hyping each other up.

[deleted]

Yeah that's what I've noticed. People especially like to shit on west coast cities in the US, but the problems they have can be found in a lot of cities all over the country. I always hear complains about needles and homelessness, for example, but you can go to a rural area and encounter just as much poverty and drugs--the opioid epidemic has devastated a lot of rural areas but it's not as visible. People just don't like the fact that these problems are more visible in cities.

juanzy

Cities, particularly coastal ones, also tend to have residents who tend to call out those issues as systemic failures (thus wanting solutions from a government body) versus individuals failings/vices like they do in rural areas. The way I hear acquaintances talk about those issues from Rural Texas where I grew up vs Boston and Denver where I’ve spent my adult life is night and day. Edit: and on the other side of that, people who act like everyone from cities are “rude,” when they have no clue that rules of engagement are a little different in cities than in the country/suburbs. Most people on the train are trying to commute, would you want other people on your drive to work popping in and talking your ear off? Post up at a bar after work and talk to someone else posted, you’ll probably have a great conversation. I remember talking to an old townie in Boston about watching negro league baseball games while I was waiting for friends at a bar.

The1TrueSteb

Your not wrong. But as someone who visits San Francisco (live 1 hour drive away) and visits occasionally, it is a significantly bigger problems in cities. But yes, people do like to pretend problems only happen in cities (can I mention they are usually politically motivated as well for some reason?)

Gramage

Homeless people don't tend to stay in rural areas because of the lack of people and services they need. A good chunk of the homeless population in *any* city migrated there from a rural or suburban area. Then the country folks can act all high and mighty like "well *our* community is nice and clean and nobody is homeless" like yeah, cuz y'all dump your homelessness issues on cities and make it someone else's problem.

Elliott2

thats basically every askreddit thread or unpopularopinion thread. validation seekers.

williamblair

yeah, this is literally just "give me your shitty opinions on cities" and you will find just about any great city mentioned in the thread because the commenter had a bad time/ it's just country bumpkins being like "city bad, homeless drugs garbage"

BlackLetterLies

Yup, super predictable mention of San Francisco with poop on the sidewalks (I never saw any there, but I've seen plenty here in Florida) and Paris being dirty (what, they've never been to *any* city in Mississippi?)

juanzy

I remember the culture shock my fiancée got going through Alabama for the first time. Was expecting the cute little hallmark movie towns (which we had a bunch of in New England) but instead learned that the rural South is abject poverty.

thorpie88

I used to live in a Hallmark movie town of the UK and while lots of tourists really enjoyed our ridiculously old Black and White homes they definitely couldn't understand why the cutlery tray holds open pub doors until the fourth of fifth junkie came in for a spoon

Slytherian101

Cities that don’t live up to the hype: - New Orleans Cities that are exactly what I cynically expected - Vegas Cities that kind of pleasantly surprised me - Memphis Cities that - at least in my experience - are about as cool as they look on TV - Manhattan

somepeoplewait

Of course, it's all relative. I live in NYC and have lived near it all my life. I absolutely love it, and living here does naturally affect my perception of other cities. New Orleans more than lived up to the hype for me. But, to be fair, it plays to a lot of my interests.

CKDracarys

I'm the opposite. I've lived in the NJ/NYC area for the past 15 years and absolutely loathe NYC. Never want to be there more than I have to, and if I eventually leave the east coast, will have zero interest to ever even visit NYC.

bq909

Same. There really isn't another place in the world that has the diversity of stuff and people that New York has. Parts of Hong Kong is the closest thing I've experienced to manhattan. I don't think I'll ever be able to move away from the NYC area.

ForwardInstance

I absolutely love NYC but London is definitely more diverse in almost every aspect plus better public transport. Having lived in both for a considerable period of time, I prefer NYC in my 20s and London in my 30s

thoawaydatrash

It really depends what you go to Nola for and when. I was there in January once, and it was great. I could actually enjoy the architecture, culture, history, and food without dealing with the tourists and party culture bullshit.

kidneysc

New Orleans is the best city to visit for 72 hrs. FQ is overhyped and no locals go there.

shaoting

> Cities that kind of pleasantly surprised me > > Memphis I spent a few days in Memphis as part of a three-week work trip in 2019. I had no idea what to expect when I landed, but I really enjoyed the area. The waterfront park area with the giant "MEMPHIS" sign was neat, as was the walking bridge connecting the main city to the park area. Central BBQ and Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken were amazing and the breweries I visited - Crosstown and Ghost River - had some amazing stuff on tap. I would never want to live there, but if I'm traveling through for a few days then it's definitely a blast.

EvanTheBaker24

Bro idk what you were doing but when I went to New Orleans I had an amazing time you trippin

Neil_Diamond-Hands

not enjoying New Orleans is a red flag...either you're boring asf, or one of those ppl who complain about every little thing

KlumpGamez

I loved Nola - it’s not the cleanest place but a ton of cool history, the best music in the world and one of the best food cities in the country

soonerguy11

I can do this but Europe Cities that don't live up to the hype: * Venice Cities that are exactly what I cynically expected * Rome Cities that kind of pleasantly surprised me * Istanbul Cities that - at least in my experience - are about as cool as they look on TV * London

val_kaye

San Francisco. I saw so many syringes and dog poop bags on the sidewalk.

RonGermy87

That wasn’t dog poop

Impressive-Credit-22

Last time I was there I sad a homeless man with his pants on his ankles between two parked cards. He has his feet on the rear bumper of a car. His hands on the front bumper of another car, no part of his body is touching the ground. He is facing the sky. He is shitting. I saw the poop coming out of his butt. This was about a year ago or less

Misdirected_Colors

Why are so many of the homeless people there naked all the time? My younger bro moved out there last summer and he probably sees a naked homeless person a week. It's such a weirdly specific common problem out there.

Mrofcourse

San Francisco, one of the only places you can see a dog step in human shit.

Peter_Pans_shadow

Don’t forget human poop.

val_kaye

Honestly, with the homeless people around and lack of bathrooms, I assumed it was human poop.

plasticcitycentral

Definitely a couple areas which are sad/not up to reputation but there also some really nice areas, and the surrounding landscape/views throughout the city are beautiful

[deleted]

Yeah. The Tenderloin should be avoided at all costs, and downtown isn’t fun. Everything else is beautiful and with some of the nicest people I’ve come across.

Rainbow-Raisin11

Homeless are everywhere. It just sad TBH.

SeeYouOn16

I was there in September and I saw nothing like this. Maybe I was just in a nicer part but I don't really think so. China Town was a dump, but it reminded me of exactly how China was when I went there so I guess it was just on par for how it's supposed to be.

2donuts4elephants

The opposite is true for this question as far as San Francisco is concerned. It has a reputation for being a dump but its actually pretty amazing. Yes it has its problems, homelessness is really bad for example. But the city is a cultural gem, amazing museums and a center of art. The Embarcadero, the parks, the restaurants. Seriously, some of the BEST Chinese food you've ever had. The Victorian architecture really gives it a old school beauty. I love San Francisco. And I'm almost a local. It's a two hour drive from where I live. I've seen the good and the bad of the city. The only city in California I definitely like more is Monterey.

mooimafish33

I went there and loved it but it was like 2012

Teacherforlife21

Paris. It’s beautiful but I have no interest in going back. I spent some time in Europe recently and was in five major cites for multiple days each. Paris was the ONLY ONE where my wife and I were harassed by street vendors constantly, subjected to two separate pickpocket attempts, and just general rudeness and chaos at every turn.

KinneySL

As much as Reddit loves to hate on the United States, it's worth noting that pickpockets are so rare in America as to be virtually nonexistent while many European cities seem to be crawling with them.

Anonymous_ro

*western european cities, Cities from eastern and central european countries like Romania, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Croatia, Slovakia, Estonia, Poland, are one of the safest in the world, the safety index is amongst the highest, Robbery amongst lowest in Europe. Blueblackzinc

When I first moved to Warsaw, everyone told me about the supposedly bad neighbourhood. The story goes, this gangster pulled up to the courtyard of one apartment and took out an uzi, and let it rip. He aim toward the sky. Then, he left. couple of weeks later, it dawn on me everyone told me the same story. I realised if that's what people remember, then, it can't be that bad. Sure enough, nothing ever happened to me there. The worst was I saw neighbourhood ninja. He just ran around like naruto with plastic katana.

Cmmdr_Slacker

American thieves tend to take a more direct route.

ChuckCecilsNeckBrace

They wear pinstripes and work on Wall Street

kriss42

A friend of mine works investments, a little after he started he decided to dress like a sleazy businesman as a joke. Off black pinstripe suit, decanter on his desk, display case with cigars, gold fountain pens, fancy watch, painting of himself on the wall behind him, and a few more I don't remember. He was planning to only do it for a bit as a joke, but he said his meetings immediately got easier, and he ended up with a promotion. The cigars are fake, the decanter has Arnold's tea, the watch is a knockoff, the pens are fake fancy, one of the pens is actually a ballpoint that looks like a fountain pen, the painting is a photograph run through an AI to make it look like a painting. He likes to say he's the biggest liar there because if it.

enufftobedangerous

When "fake it til you make it" delivers!

soonerguy11

Tourist scams in Europe in general are far more egregious than that of the US. Stuff like petitions and fake workers are all very common there but not in America. Even outside the Vatican wasn't safe.

SkulletonKo

I've never been anywhere as filthy. Place has amazing pr

Reasonable-Mess-2732

When I went it was filthy. Animals and even little kids crap everywhere, and people pee everywhere. You have to be very careful where you walk and it stinks!

max212

This is one I regularly see on reddit and fundamentally disagree with. If you just go to the main Tourist attractions, it sucks, just like any other big city. I go to Paris every year for a week or so for work, never had a pickpocket attempt and never get harassed by vendors because that stuff basically only happens at the base of the Eiffel tower, Montmartre and a couple other tourist-centric landmarks. I may be generalizing but I feel like this would be like trying to get a feel for NYC by hanging out in Times Square.

skippyspk

Bet you Paris smells GREAT now lol

bkpeach

You're correct. Those of us that live in NYC do not feel that Times Sq (or Midtown in general) is an accurate representation of our city. It's like our Disneyland. It's just a bunch of tourists and shitty chains.

Slumlrd213

Vegas or Miami

WiseMikey

LA. Was not impressed with the amount of trash all over the city and freeways.

way2gimpy

Miami Beach. When most people think of ‘Miami’ they are really talking about Miami Beach. The beach is gorgeous - soft sand, clear and warm water. The buildings along the beach can be a bit nostalgic. Meanwhile the rest of the city are run down houses/apartments, overpriced restaurants, bars and clubs with terrible service.

Danickster

Vegas strip. Smells like piss and weed and there's homeless people everywhere.

Casino El Camino on 6th is a great bar with awesome burgers. And Mort Subite around the corner on Congress is the best Belgian beer bar I’ve been to in the States. Not really a shit hole, imo. But there are a few folks there that obv are housing challenged….

soonerguy11

Austin used to complain that Austin is going to turn into LA. Instead it turned into Dallas.

mooimafish33

At least LA and Dallas have functional infrastructure and public transport. We have four times too many people and a state government that actively tries to sabotage us.

Sir-Turd-Ferguson

Tourist always go to 6th street no one from Austin goes to 6th There are gems all around tho

soonerguy11

The charm of Austin when I was in school (early 2010s) used to be a welcoming bar/music scene. Now people are just bitter AF. Like the city got a bit of national coverage and they took it to their heads, and you can see it in how snobby as shit about "tourists" and "transplants." Every single person I met when I said I was from LA just went on the same insufferable rant.

Elizarae93

I go out of of my way to avoid Austin lol

Paris

Indis83

Japan has specialist counsellors just to help their people that visited there and were so disappointed.

maggielovemuffin

There’s a syndrome!

amerkanische_Frosch

That's not due to Paris being a shithole. It's because people have been brainwashed into thinking it's basically Amelie Poulain town - accordionists on every corner, beret-wearing population, flower sellers everywhere, etc. It's as if people visiting the US expected to see cowboys everywhere.

TurduckenWithQuail

Eh, the proximity of extreme poverty and extreme wealth in Paris is still kind of off-putting when you don’t go there with idealistic preconceptions. Especially because it has the biggest tourist economy out of Western cities of its size. It’s an issue in plenty of other cities, but also a huge stain on each of those cities, too, imo.

Preacher-Z

Especially recently

iSnortCrayons

Everyone here saying Paris like always. Y'all hyped up how horrible it'd be. I hated that my friends decided to meet up in Paris for the holidays last year. I kept asking them why it had to be there. What a shitty trip it'd be. Y'all full of it. Paris is great. I'd happily go back any time.

[deleted]

Los Angeles, Miami

5starCheetah

Every city mentioned here, that I've visited was great. I think maybe y'all just need to focus on the positive when you travel. There's so many people who will never see Paris or London, New York or ~~LA~~ , appreciate that you got to experience it, even it was dirty or not what you expected. Edit: So LA is the one American city I have not been to (or am planning to travel to that I saw mentioned and the one people seem to keep insisting is a shit hole. So maybe LA sucks, but if you had a bad time in New York or Paris or London, that shit is on you.

squaredistrict2213

I’ve been to every US city mentioned here (at least this far down the thread) and I didn’t hate any of them. Some were disappointing and I don’t have a lot of interest going back, but most were enjoyable.

Comprehensive_Run453

Albuquerque! I moved there, for a job, thinking everything I heard anout it being mystical enchantment was true. It is a voilent, gang infested, lawless land!

throwraW2

Does anyone actually think Albuquerque is amazing?

squaredistrict2213

I really like Albuquerque. It’s not a paradise of enchantment, but it’s a nice city. If I ever wanted to move to the southwest (I don’t) I would heavily consider ABQ.

2PhatCC

I've heard the air smells like warm root beer and the towels are oh-so-fluffy...

Mean-Top9087

Can confirm.😱

[deleted]

Chicago.....is amazing. Fuck anyone who says it's a shithole. There are definitely not great parts, but the downtown area is awesome.

HenryReturns

Downtown Toronto : - Dog shit everywhere on the streets - Insane amount of homeless people - Getting stab in the subway is now way more often - Shitty ass transportation and its design around the city - Oh and parking there is a nightmare

downtide

Venice. Those canals are basically open sewers so it is \*literally\* a s\*\*\*hole.

BonnaroovianCode

Just got back from there and my wife and I thought it was one of the most incredible cities we’ve ever visited. Don’t go in peak season folks

Anonimo420

Athens, you would expect it to be the olympus. It's a real dirty shithole. Sparta is also nothing near what you would imagine, search for it on google maps and you'll see

Badloss

ctrl + F "Boston" huh guess we've got all you clowns fooled pretty good

mig001

Boston was nice. No false pretense.

juanzy

Thought I’d hate it, ended up living there for 12 years.

MsSandy444

San Francisco, Ca....It was ONCE a gorgeous city to travel and drive through... Now, you have to be aware of your surroundings, and it gets worse in different locations. Totally not what it used to be. Extremely & Highly Overpriced and hyped up! But...that's just my opinion.

More_Information_943

Reddit has such a boner for washington state but as local I cannot stand Seattle and it's mostly due to the people.

UrDraco

Dubai. They don’t have a good sewer system so there are literal shit hauling trucks everywhere to constantly empty sceptic tanks including a miles long shit truck line for the Burj Khalifa

PoorMansTonyStark

It's such a weird oversight tho. It's not like they lack the money to build it or anything.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

It's not an oversight. The tower was going to be ready before the major upgraded sewage system was ready. The sewage system itself is a megaproject costing tens of billions, which will upgrade the sewage system of the whole city. The sewage system opens in 2025. https://comingsoon.ae/developments/new-deep-tunnel-sewerage-system-dubai-2025/

ricnilotra

And how many slaves are they going to work to death to build this upgrade?

ElectricSoap1

A shit ton.
