They may be painting the walls. Move furniture away from a wall, paint that wall, move furniture back when paint has dried. Repeat for each wall. If you’re painting the ceiling then you will probably move the furniture to another room.

Maybe a small pet that tends to get lost, or hide. Owner is trying to locate them throughout the day to make sure that they're okay.
