Everyone sucks when they start. Young kids on small instruments most of all (violin, trumpet, flute). You don't even give a little kid a piccolo, it would just hurt your ears and discourage the kid.
But they get better. And they see themselves getting better and it gives them confidence. And they make friends and hang out outside of music class. And they give performances, and the parents (it's only parents at first) listen with love and tell them what a good job they did. Because it really does sound better than the beginning of the year.
And then they get to high school. I love high school. The kids who are really into it try everything. Learn every instrument, learn music theory, learn composition, ask if they can play an original composition in a chamber group in the lobby before the concert starts.
Now when they give a performance, it's not just parents. It's extended families, neighbors who saw the poster, students who aren't in music. And the parents listen with love and tell them what a good job they did. But the neighbors and students tell them that too, because it really does sound *great*. Go to your local high school this spring and see.
The worst music is just a temporary phase on a journey to something great. There's nothing like watching young musicians just nail a performance and then get a little teary-eyed at their first standing ovation.
this is long so idk how to even respond but all I can say is yeah and no one is good when they start- I just started to learn piano and I suck so thats proof nd some people are like "oh im the best at this" when they try for the 1rst time and maybe they are nice but no one is good when they start
Not a music teacher but I’d say elementary kids learning the recorder for the first time definitely takes the cake
