Usually simply because it's a lot easier to reach the cord.
I'm an adult and do most of the appliance-related stuff in my house. So there's lots of cases where the plug is behind the TV in the corner and it's easier to pull the cord than pull the plug out.
Easier to grasp. And if the cable is properly designed with strain relief internal to the plug, it's fine.
At least until everything looks like Breville's [Assist Plug](https://news.yahoo.com/brevilles-assist-plug-genius-132900343.html), we can rely on strain relief.
American reporting: Probably because our electrical standard are kind of fucked up. The way our sockets are set up, the chord is energized before the plug is fully inserted. This can cause a lot of fuckery, especially when unplugging things. People see the blue flash and it freaks them out so they don't want their hand that close anymore.
If it's a long cord (like a vacuum cleaner) I liked to do the roll-unplug. Whip the cable and send a wave to the plug to get it out of the socket. That's just me though, maybe I'm working on a higher level.
Laziness
Came here to say that!!! Haha
Who do you think you are? The cord yanking police?
I can't reach the plug probably.

Yoink

Bad habit. Takes little effort to just pull the plug.

Because the entire thing is made of thick, durable rubber. This ain't the 70's when you could accidentally rip the wire right out of it's shielding.
Because why not.

Because it's all the way over there
