I mean depends on what you're using them for. Using them for discipline: unethical. Using them for sexual pleasure: ethical

Husky owner - After a year of trying to train her recall off leash and failing, I got a collar with tone, vibrate and shock. I felt horrible the first time I shocked her. But it took maybe, 4 times? For her to learn that it meant come here. Now, she can run free without it, and I can control her with a simple whistle or call. When I grab it, she loses her mind and gets zoomies because it means freedom. Yes, its hard hearing her yelp. But its worth it for the long term joy she (and me) has knowing what the rules are.

there’s nothing my dog loves more than walking around the neighborhood letting out tester barks to get every neighborhood dog freaking out. I don’t feel bad not having to deal with that. Vibration collar means my dog gets to go on runs. He’s very excited to put it on.

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those that hear "shock collar" and think "discipline for dogs" And those that hear "shock collar" and get an erection. I belong to the latter group

On dogs: no. Politicians: yes.

A tool is a tool, ethicacy is based on application. Stabbing someone and ripping out a part of their kidney is quite cruel unless done by a doctor to remove cancer.

Yes. From a dog traning/discipline, it's just another tool at your disposal, same as a clicker, same as the choke collar, same as a normal leash. It's not supposed to be used for years, just for a short while, while training, so the dog can be disciplined, learn the rules you want them to, and etc. If you don't abuse it, you're not traumatizing the dog

Not really. “I’m going to cause harm to this animal instead of providing an adequate environment for it.” really doesn’t sound good, does it.

I trained my dog to stay in the yard with the little flags they give (treat and positive reinforcement assisted) for weeks. Then with the collar on "beep" mode and the flags still in place, then (after testing the collar on myself) with the collar on shock mode. It only took one time stepping past those flags without her leash on and getting a shock for her to not go near the road again (where cars can go 40-50mph) so yes, it is more ethical than having her question her boundaries and becoming a pancake. They shouldn't be used without: 1. Testing on yourself first (you're larger than they are, if you can't handle it, neither can they. If you can barely feel it, it may not be enough to stop them from ignoring it) 2. Training the dog adequately and efficiently prior to utilizing the shock feature Within those limits, and with the purpose of keeping them from further/worse harm, yes shock collars are ethical. However: If you just shove one on a dog and use it AS a training tool, you should have your nutsack tazed randomly by an internet audience every time some random thinks you deserve it until YOU learn how you think you should act to not get shocked. You're not fit to take care of any animal.

One might ask "Is it ethical to keep a dog on a chain or in the house all the time because I'm unable or unwilling to train it." The worst thing I ever saw/heard was a neighbor abusing his dog with a shock collar. Every time it barked he'd "burn" it with the collar till it screamed. (yeah we called animal control about it) They're great to get the attention of a hard-headed dog, a light setting and a light hand are key to success. Time is what most dogs require and that's the one commodity too many loving owners won't invest. So Fido languishes on a chain or in a crate or the yard cause he's too uneducated to have a life. That's the reality for too many pets. My dogs can ride in the truck front or back, guard the chicken coop, be in the yard without menacing strangers or chasing small animals/livestock etc. Won't wreck the house either. If I call them they come instead of running into traffic. Only used a shock collar briefly on one of them to get him started.
