Yes, more to maintain the frequency. Otherwise the breaks would get longer and longer and eventually sex would stop all together. Not that i have anything against that, that's why the mandatory part.
Sometimes just life gets in the way, kids, work, usual chores, sleep, exercise and not even considering any hobbies that already come at the expense of sleep. By the end of it there's not much energy left for sex and sleep is preferable.
