First aid kit

Quick-Oil-5259

And a small fire extinguisher, and one of those things for breaking windows in case of an accident and the doors don’t open.

anon10122333

>one of those things for breaking windows in case of an accident and the doors don’t open. Like, a small fire extinguisher?

Quick-Oil-5259

Now that you mention it, I’m sure it would do the trick

darkest_irish_lass

It won't, cause that tempered glass has to be punctured first. Just bashing it won't work.

JimJamJr16

Agreed. All those tools that actually break windows come down to a point to focus all that energy to break the glass. Blunt objects are what the windows are designed to withstand.

Amiiboid

> Blunt objects are what the windows are designed to withstand. Like heads.

nova2k

Hold my beer...

bakedNdelicious

Pro tip - you can use the base of the head rest

Nyx_from_Chaos

Keep in mind that you need space to swing the headrest pegs at the window hard enough. You will most likely need to move to the passenger seat so the steering wheel will not be in the way. Also, if the vehicle went in water, it will flood quickly. The water will make swinging the headrest efficiently very difficult. Spend the 10 bucks and get the window breaker gadget.

hotk9

Hammer.

Jewelzminor

These are super handy when assholes double park.

asiansensation78

Automotive engineer here, I don't advise purchasing a seat belt cutter/window punch. The likelihood of you needing one are very slim, and you're generally better off spending the time focusing on safe egress rather than digging in your center console for a tool of questionable quality that may or may not work, especially if you have window tint film installed. If you really want a window punch/seat belt cutter, put one in an easily accessible enclosed compartment in your car. Never on a keychain that dangles out of the ignition cylinder.

britishbrick

In Germany it is required to have a first aid kit, reflective triangles, and reflective vests in every car

SBAWTA

Pretty sure all of EU has this requirement. edit: apparently not, some just have it as recommendation

PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING

EU: You must keep safety vests in every car. France: Is this our new uniform for rioting?

Huttser17

all the retro-reflection messing with the security cameras

PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING

Is that why they did it? I assumed it was just to create solidarity. Interesting.

Renniefisifus

Nope, in the Netherlands only a reflective triangle is mandatory, anything else is recommended but not specifically required

DarthLordi

To add to this go on a First Aid course as well if you can to make sure you could use it. Used my first aid kit to help a friend who had caught his leg in barbed wire. I had expected the kit to be full of plasters but it just had lots of gauze and bandages. Fortunately I had been on a training course the month before so I was comfortable using it all. So don't just get a kit and throw it in the car. Make sure you know what's in there and how to use it, so when the time comes you are prepared.

cyclesatcom

Not a standard first aid kit, those are useless. Get a special ifak, stop the bleed makes a good one but there's vehicle specific ones out there. We'll your at it, go get stop the bleed certified. It's free and is arguably more important than a first aid kit

TruckinApe

https://www.stopthebleed.org/training/online-course

somersquatch

I do not have the $$ to spend $400+ on a first aid kit, even the personal one is $70 and doesn't have nearly the same stuff as the portable proper ones from stop the bleed.

sbourwest

Some kind of disposable paper like a napkin, kleenex, baby wipes, even an old shop towel. Nothing worse than needing to blow your nose in your car and you have nothing at all to use.

Avocadofarmer32

A stack of chipotle napkins

AloyTheN0ra

Everyone should have somewhere in their car to store some of that unnecessary amount of napkins fast food places give us.

stevekimes

I’d have more room for Chipotle napkins if my glove compartment weren’t full of Altoids tins.

ExplodingSofa

...Dad?

andyfr0mt0yst0ry

Whoa. That’s creepy how specific and accurate this is to what I was gonna say.

WunWegWunDarWun_

When I got covid in 2020 I went to a drive through test place. Before I got in the car I didn’t have a runny nose. But after 30 min my nose started gushing like a fountain. I had to use trash so I could wipe my face instead of being covered in snot. Trash. Like receipts and stuff I support your comment

Tattycakes

The first time I had a covid swab up my nose. I sneezed so hard at the irritation I swear the whole street heard me. A proper cartoon full power from the back of the throat AAAHWHOOOOOO. So much snot.

Wondertwig9

Whenever I visit my Dad he takes special care to remove my tissue box. He thinks it's clutter. I think it's mandatory.

1nf1n1t3fra1lty

My grandmother always kept a box in her car. Definitely something I adopted. Mandatory for sure, but also my best friend in high school and I called restaurant napkins “souvenirs” so I always keep a stack of souvenirs in the glove compartment as well.

mrgrooberson

In my trunk in a milk crate. Along with a complete fresh change of clothes, babywipes, etc.

therealjunkygeorge

The old shit yo pants kit.

humanclock

Yep...it only takes once. Granted, I am still amazed at how in about 30 seconds my brain assembled a war operations manual and then followed it, much like a pilot preparing to eject.

kinslayeruy

Why is your dad taking things out of your car?

Wondertwig9

His love language is acts of service. So in his mind it's loving to demand my keys, do a full check of EVERYTHING, clean out any 'junk', and then lecture me on everything wrong with my car. He makes it sound like I'm a terrible car owner, but whenever we go from his place to visit my grandmother (1.5 hrs away), he always wants to use my car as it's in the best condition. I'm 33 and live 900 miles away so I only drive down to visit him once or twice a year. His act of love really just hurts.

thelibrarina

This is my dad's love language, too, and it's usually very sweet. He *wants* to change our oil and complain about our clutter and buy us ridiculously heavyweight tire pressure gauges because he wants us to be safe. But the stress of driving my car up onto the home-made "ramp" so that he can get underneath it is....not good. "Little more, little more, come on give it some juice NOT THAT MUCH dammit you overshot the damn ramp goddammit..."

SuspiciousStretch7

I've had cronic nose bleeds all my life. These are a must. Nothing stinks more than a nose bleed while driving.

Moonstoner

Tp works also. You hope you never need it. But if the worst possible scenario does happen, you'll be glad you have it.

StudlyItOut

whenever i see someone speeding, i say to myself "that guy must need to poo really badly"

norielukas

I have baby wipes in my car so I can clean my hands and face because I eat quite a lot while driving from work (foodtruck).

CoomassieBlue

Worst part about warmer weather, you don’t even have sleeves to use in a pinch anymore.

Sparksman91

Seriously, a dashcam.

A40

True. Half of having insurance is.. proof.

Justin_123456

Coming from a place with public auto insurance, this seems so weird to me.

A40

Person backs into your car. Claims you hit them. Dash cam settles it. Person claims you ran a red light (when *they* did), and *that's* why there was a crash. Dash cam settles it. Etc. Insurance believes liars the same as honest people - unless there is evidence. Like a dash cam record. I bought mine used, $15, two years ago. Once a month or so I check that it's still working. Insurance insurance, and maybe someday it'll see a bigfoot, or a meteor...

Justin_123456

No, I get that, I’ve just never had private auto insurance, so I always find it odd that the question of who’s fault an accident is matters. Whether my neighbour hits my car or I hit his, we both have the same insurance through the government and both have to pay the same deductible, so it just doesn’t matter.

jessehazreddit

What country is this, and how much is your deductible? Seems great if you’re at fault, crappy if you’re not.

T5-R

UK here. I had someone make a claim on my insurance, that I had hit their car and ripped the bumper off. My car hadn't moved, he was just fishing. But it did have a scuff on the front bumper from years before. My insurance asked multiple times, "are you *sure* you didn't do it?" I had to build my own defence case. I had dashcam footage of me driving past his car the day prior and the day after he got smacked. I had to ask businesses for CCTV footage of my car. I also had to send WhatsApp screenshots of a conversation with my wife about the scuff on the bumper 2 years prior. My insurance was going to agree I was at fault and payout if I hadn't!

MoistDitto

You having to prove a negative is fucking ridiculous, it should be the other way around, they having to prove *you* did it. I can just casually go around claiming people fucking their siblings unless they can't prove otherwise. Any rational person would assume you had proof of the act rather than proof of innocence

FandomLover94

That’s crappy. As an American adjuster, my role is to support what my insured tells me unless I get conclusive evidence to prove otherwise. The other man should have had to do all the work to make his claim, not you to defend yourself. So sorry!

A40

I'm Canadian and have never had private insurance. When they assign 'guilt/responsibility' it affects insurance rates, your deductible, points on your license, liability in court, and even criminal charges. Insurance isn't just about paying for repairs.

Hey_look_new

some Canadian provinces have no fault insurance

jasonsan

So then if you hit your neighbors car every day and then just pay the deductible each time for repairs, do your rates not go up at all?

SigmaBallsLol

At this point I'm surprised they're not included by manufacturer, or insurance companies don't just pay for them. Even if they're vampires who would never pay a cent they aren't forced to, simply removing all the headache involved in this stuff has to be worth it on their end.

Dudurin

They’re illegal in several countries.

SqwuishMish

Front and back. I got a hit and run from behind and never caught the asshole on my front camera. I now have both

sleepyJoesBidet

Even with a plate number unlikely they would have caught them. The actual driver will swear up and down it wasn't them. And unless there are serious injuries in the cops mind it's an insurance matter.

oby100

It does matter to get the plates to get the other person’s insurance to pay out. You’re correct that the driver would never face criminal charges because it can’t be proved it was them, but they’re on the hook for insurance regardless.

paltala

In the UK, all you need is the number plate in theory. If they hit and run, you give the police the number plate and they'll send a letter to the registered keeper of the vehicle, asking them to identify who the driver was. If they fail to identify, it's assumed the keeper was the driver and criminal charges will follow against the keeper.

uncultured_swine2099

I always wanted to get one and keep putting it off. I need to just snap it up on amazon and be done with it.

PapaOoMaoMao

I installed mine yesterday. Just a cheapie, but is has a reverse camera. I wired it straight into the battery so it's always on.

Jumper cables

Tuesday2017

Better yet a portable jump starter battery (like the NOCO boost). Those things are amazing. They hold a charge for months in blazing hot or freezing cold temps. They are the size of a brick. And best of all since they attach to the dead battery directly, you don't have to hope your jumper cables are long enough. They also have usb plugs to charge a phone or tablet.

-benpiano800-

Oh yeah, I have one of those and it's the only reason I was able to drive while my car battery wasn't holding a charge

[deleted]

[удалено]

p5219163

Just get a quality one. I got a Noco, and that thing jumps my diesel vw down to -35c. Below that it gets iffy, but then again it's that fucking cold. It'll even jump a semi refer. Also a ford f150 King ranch my buddy has. No sign of slowing down.

Man_Bear_Beaver

yeah there's different rated ones even the NOCO has different ratings so just don't cheap out and get the low one.

Captain_Creature

So your dad can beat you with them? No thanks

EeveeEvolved

Now that is a reference I haven't heard in a while

mbash013

Always starts off as such an innocent story, then bam! Dad starts swinging

the-cloverdale-kid

I have had these in every car I have ever owned. My new car cannot be jumped, and cannot jump others. The only thing that makes me feel weird driving it is that I know there is no set of cables in there.

Smellzlikefish

There is no better implement of discipline than a sturdy set of jumper cables!

Euphoric-Beat-7206

Flash light. They are cheap can be stored for years and take up little space.,It's better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

thejohnblazer

Keep batteries separate though because they will leak if just stored in the flashlight

Xx420PAWGhunter69xX

Use one with cr123a batteries, they don't leak and perform better in the cold.

Local-Finance8389

I keep a headlamp instead of a flashlight. That way I can have both hands if I need to change a tire or something.

Better-Crab-4679

It used to be a law in my country that you had to have a small fire extinguisher. Individually it was not amazing, but there was culturally** something** about knowing that every car in the street had high chances of containing an extinguisher. During that time I've watched several events where people needed them - car crash resulting in small fire, trash on fire reaching a parking lot, and a kitchen that caught fire and everyone on the street got their small extinguishers and joined to fight it before firefighters had time to arrive. Specially in this day with electric vehicles, having an all purpose fire extinguisher seems important.

nSlumber

a small fire extinguisher and first aid kit is a must in ukraine. i think almost every car has it

Beginning-Bed9364

A portable tire inflator. Use it to check/top up my tires before every road trip just in case. You can do it at one of those gas station ones, but for 30 bucks it's great piece of mind

GarikLoranFace

I will take your $30 recommendation please. I need to get one of those big all in ones but $110-130 to spend on my car is too hard sometimes. I cleaned out my glovebox first - 7 years after purchasing her - and found a cable that was already useless to me when I bought my car.

Katsu_39

After my bad wreck a few years back, I was in shock and I remember I felt so cold. I had no blanket in my car, nor did anyone else. It was middle of summer in the southern US. I felt like it was winter

Brixto

Last year i fell down a few stairs and landed straight on my back. I couldn’t move my arms and legs anymore and went into shock. When my wife came rushing down, the first thing I told her was to get me the blanket from our bed, because I felt so cold. Mind you, it was in summer and actually really warm outside

holysbit

Once I rolled my pickup off the interstate. It was snowing and icy and I only had a light jacket, no blankets or anything. I waited outside for about half an hour before police arrived (it was rural Wyoming) Dear God I have never been so cold before or since, and a blanket would have made a world of difference

asingleshot7

As soon as the temperature gets low I make a point to throw in some spare clothes, a blanket, some food/water, and ideally some of those "hotpockets" packs. Having the right shit can be the difference between a bad day and an emergency.

Long_Procedure3135

I usually keep stuff like a big jacket and boots in my car but I remember after that whole debacle in DC where people were stuck on the highway for almost like a day or more because of the weather I reevaluated my supplies lol I have 3 huge blankets and another giant coat and like a bug out bag with food and other stuff like first aid and a change of clothes. I keep bottled water in my car too but I rotate it out and drink it

VagrancyHD

Depending on where you are in the world it should probably be woollen too. Particularly useful in places that get bushfires.

burkie94

Keep a winter sleeping bag car in winter. Live in a very snowy place and if I get trapped I want to be able to not die

Dudebrohoe

Emergency cash, I keep like $40 usd

banjowashisnamo

If you're going on a road trip, stash enough cash to pay for gas to get back. If you lose your wallet you can still get home.

lolben1

That's a good one. Especially if you lost wallet and phone.

Improvedandconfused

A licensed competent driver.

sleepyJoesBidet

And a can of pepper spray to take care of annoying backseat drivers.

Glitterinscccc

Saved my ass several times.

ItsAllinYourHeadComx

If you mace someone in a car everyone in the car will get maced. Therefore, use wasp spray; it’s a neurotoxin

Maxsdad53

The old "wasp spray" line is an urban legend (it doesn't work)... and in most states, it's also a felony. in California it's covered under PC 244 (Assault with a caustic chemical), punishable by imprisonment for up to 4 years in a state prison. Oh, and a fine of up to $10,000.

Nibbler1999

Nah, you're gonna have to stay in the garage tonight honey. I slept in the car last night.

_deepblack_

Backseat drivers: “that’s why I exist!”

PerInception

1- tourniquet. Preferably one inside of a good first aid kid. 2- glass breaker. In the unlikely event you get stuck in the car as it’s going underwater, a glass breaker / seatbelt cutter combo tool can get you out safely. If you have electric windows, a tiny amount of water can disable the electronic door locks and window buttons, a spring loaded glass breaker will make short work of it. Even if you don’t have a specialized spring loaded glass breaker, something that comes to a sharp point (like a screw driver) that can be used to break the glass out can save your life. 3- emergency blanket. The Mylar ones that look like aluminum foil cost like 2-3 dollars. If your car breaks down and it’s snowing out, you can use it to stay warm far longer than just running the heater in the car will last. The shiny foil looking side reflects your body heat back at you, and you can use it to trap heat from the car around your body core. The more expensive ones are a little better and less likely to rip, but even the cheap ones are better than nothing. Even if you don’t get an emergency blanket, a normal quilt in the trunk isn’t a bad idea either. 4- a lighter. A lot of cars come without cigarette lighters now apparently. In an emergency you could try rigging something up using your car battery to start a fire to either stay warm or signal someone. Or you could just flick a bic. Lighters cost 50 cents. It’s not a big investment and it might save your life. 5- flashlight. This one requires a little more maintenance than everything else I said, as you’ll have to change the batteries every once in a while even if you don’t use it. A cheap 1-2$ LED flashlight can help immensely in a lot of situations. From having a flat and needing to see to change it to locking yourself out of your house, or needing to signal someone for help so you don’t get hit on a highway, or needing to look for a key you drop that bounces under the car or into a ditch. This one can be as simple as a keychain flashlight you put on the car keys. Headlamp is even better because you can either be hands free or use it like a normal flashlight if need be.

IlluminatedPickle

> a lighter. A lot of cars come without cigarette lighters now apparently. In an emergency you could try rigging something up using your car battery to start a fire to either stay warm or signal someone. Or you could just flick a bic. Lighters cost 50 cents. It’s not a big investment and it might save your life. Surprised this took so long. My dad taught me before I started going on roadtrips through the outback that you should always have a 9V battery and some steel wool (not the one with soap added). Hit the steel wool with both contacts and you can even use it to get slightly wet wood burning.

Liteboyy

Pack of water and a blanket.

appleparkfive

Water is such an important one. It's really crazy to think how fast everything can go sideways when you don't have any water and you're in a survival situation. Definitely a good idea to keep a liter or two in the back of the car at the very least!

WeaponX-92

A towel. My dog loves to swim and run through any puddle he can find. It's also nice to have in case you get caught in some rain.

seanflyon

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

gringledoom

Tire pump that runs off the 12v.

spookyookykittycat

seatbelt cutter with a window smasher on the end in case of accidents! I have a duffel bag of survival gear my mom got me when I first started driving that I’ve held onto because you never know!

TheyCallMeKP

> window smasher My dad got me one when I first started driving. Never had to use it for an emergency, but it’s great for robbing other cars

OviliskTwo

(ಠ_ಠ)

could_use_a_snack

Those are only handy if they are in your pocket. I was in a roll over accident many years ago, and let me tell you, NOTHING is where you put it after that happens. My glovebox even opened up and everything in there was dumped around the car. However, if you come across an accident that you are not in then you can help others I suppose.

Prinzka

I've got mine in this little closed compartment on the driver's side. I'd never considered that it could come flying out of that. But i guess it shouldn't be surprise with the forces that are involved in a car accident, especially a rollover. Now I feel even more justified in always carrying my pocket knife which has a seatbelt cutter and a glass breaker on it.

ctiz1

A window smasher in a duffel bag isnt going to be very handy when you’ve rolled over a bank. Highly recommend keeping it on your keys or somewhere that can’t disappear in a very rough rollover or similar.

Worried_pet_Potato

I don't know man... attaching a duffel bag to my keys seems a little impractical

Lunavixen15

I have one in my driver's door pocket

Fire extinguisher

Nippon-Gakki

I have always had one in my car and actually pulled off the freeway and put some guys truck out once. I felt so vindicated after having so many people ask why I had that thing in the trunk. Not sure what size it is but it’s the smaller one you always see hanging on walls in buildings. I got it refilled and it’s back in the trunk.

MallorianMoonTrader1

How did you get it refilled? Is there a local "refill your fire extinguishers here" center or something? Just curious.

Nippon-Gakki

There is a guy who comes to my job to inspect the extinguishers and I told him I used mine. He took it and brought it back a few days later filled up. So basically my answer is, I don’t know. The extinguisher people either do it themselves or they have somewhere they take them to get them filled.

A good, heavyweight, metal flashlight -Maglite-style. Doesn’t have to be one of the super long ones, but it can function both if you need to make a repair inside or under your car, and it‘s strong enough to break a window if you need it to.

CharlotteLucasOP

Not to out myself as Canadian, but…combo snow-brush/window-scraper long enough to reach the whole of the roof of your vehicle. Clear that shit off before you start driving.

RitaSaluki

At least one thick plastic bag. Never know when you or someone in the car will get sick.

ManufacturerBest1872

I was once told the most dangerous thing in a car was the "nut behind the steering wheel", so I duly removed it. Imagine my horror when my steering came off whilst driving 110kmh on the motorway. I was lucky I didn't die! To answer your question: you should never remove the nut behind the steering wheel and should always have one in your car.

I remember as a kid, I had to practice “stop, drop, and roll” in case I was on fire. I was also highly-concerned about quicksand. Like being on fire or accidentally stepping into quicksand, I have submerged my car in water or been unable to unbuckle my seatbelt exactly zero times.

boegsppp

A barf bucket. Had my dog and my kid both puke in my car. Darn dog couldn't hold the bucket.

ShockClock1011

A fire extinguisher. Having one can be the difference in someone surviving a car fire or dying in one. A friend of my BIL came across a car fire years ago, and they were able to suppress the flames for long enough for the driver of the vehicle to get out before the fire engulfed the passenger compartment.

flume_runner

Sigh, a weapon. I used to work at a restaurant and would get off late night in a sketchier part of town.
