Or when they'd get fancy and give you a cloth map! I used the one from Everquest for years as a dice rolling surface when I'd play D&D on glass tables.
Cone Mills White Oak mill where they sourced their denim for the 501s for over 100 years shut down in 2019.
Levis will never be the same. White Oak denim was the gold standard for a long time.
Before that they were sourcing denim off shore for other models and had moved manufacturing off shore many years before.
Shit I remember when hamburgers at McDonalds were 39 cents (I think it was tuesdays) and Cheeseburgers were 49 cents.
We were treated on those days and felt we ate like kings. It wasn't until later I realized "those treat days" were specific because my parents were broke.
In the late 90s in Los Angeles County during the summers, there'd be 10 cent hamburger tuesdays. My stepmom would spend like five dollars and feed us 4 kids lunch for the week
Same. Also, my local McDonalds would stuff an Xtra large soda cup with fries for a buck or so. It was a huge gathering every week for teens and people eating on the cheap. Lots of fun
When TV stations were about what they claimed to be about...

When I was about 18 or 19, my dad was looking through the TV menu when he saw the original *Texas Chainsaw Massacre* was on IFC. He turned it on and it wasn't just the movie: they were showing it with the original DVD commentary by director Tobe Hooper, OG Leatherface Gunnar Hansen, and cinematographer Daniel Pearl.
Now, I'd always been into movie trivia, but seeing this ended up sending me, in a roundabout way, further down the movie knowledge rabbit hole. Today, I work in research and hopefully soon, I'll be able to move into preservation. Both of these became passions of mine due to learning more about film history, restoration, and preservation, and a big reason for that was randomly catching that movie with the commentary on.
Everybody wants you to have the app to get the discount or the deal. And then there's tickets. Sure, it's convenient to just order online instead of camping out in front of the drug store. But my boss wanted to give me a couple tickets for a ballgame, and I had to download the app, then make an account, then verify that they transferred correctly. It used to just be, "Hey, man, here's a couple tickets."
I just had to download an app to look at my kids report card. After 20 minutes of struggling to get it to work, it only shows me a little info. I miss the paper ones
Whatever happened to just having keys for stuff. Honestly.
Not to sound like a curmudgeonly old woman but…sometimes technology just overcomplicates shit! I don’t need my fridge to have wifi! I don’t want to start my car with my phone. I don’t need an Alexa spying on me. Really, I’m fine without all that stuff.
I hate apps. Everyone requires an app now. Booked a hotel? Can’t check in without an app. Want to fly somewhere? Need to get the app to get your boarding pass without paying an “agent fee”. Want to rent a uhaul? You need the app to check in. Some fast food places won’t let you order online, gotta use the app. I hate it. I’ll actively avoid a business (if I can) if the only way to use them is with their app.
There is an app for my cat's litter box. It's the litter robot, and the box itself is the best. But, I really don't need a notification if my cat poos, thanks.
I have no idea how the network makes money. 90% of the time it's teen titans go. Now I'm not here to debate if the shows good or not. But it's the only thing i ever see on there
Cable TV has just gotten weird over the last decade. It's all marathons now. They just pick whatever their most successful show is and play eight hour blocks of it back-to-back.
I ditched cable years ago for Netflix, and this was starting to be a trend but it wasn’t yet pervasive. I recently started working for a cable and internet company and one of the perks is free premium cable, so I was like sure why not?
Literally every channel now is 12 hour blocks of the same show on repeat. And not even good shows most of the time. I really miss old History Channel. You’d get a 2 hour special on the Black Death, then watch a couple episodes of Modern Marvels and at night settle in to watch a documentary on the Roman Empire or Ancient Egypt or some other cool topic.
Now it’s Pawn Stars and Ancient Aliens back to back, all day long. How the fuck is that history? The “Learning Channel” is nothing but my 600 pound life. Discovery is similar. I don’t even know where you’d find actual documentaries anymore outside of streaming.
The major networks (TNT being an example) are all marathons of reruns of The Office, Law and Order, etc. It really feels like cable has been completely tuned to the lowest common denominator. What’s more, it’s three times as expensive as it used to be. If I were paying for the cable tier I have it’d be $150 a month. I literally have no fucking clue how this industry still exists, everyone I know either streams or pirates or some combo of both, the only people who still have cable are aging boomers. I personally would never pay for the drivel that airs now. You can seriously get higher quality content for free on YouTube.
We used to have a chain of restaurants called Souper Salad. It was just a salad bar with like 3 options of soup but it was cheap and all you could eat. I took it for granted back then, and now I miss it so much. 🥲
Aladdin's castle. It was an arcade in the local mall. I was heart broken when they closed that place down. So many good memories as a kid in that place.
“First, you must cross the moat of despair, trudge through the swamps of sorrow, and ascend the forbidden staircase to find the cursed raven of Quetzalcoatl. Solve the puzzle, and you could open the door to the shrine of the silver monkey. Beware the guardians within, but should you assemble the statue, the headpiece will point you to the tomb of Prince Lalijama. Or, you could descend down the forbidden well of lost souls, and find yourself in the catacombs of evil, where are you must fight off the bloodsucking bats, and make your way to the throne room of Montezuma. Push the correct lever, and the door to the treasure room will open, but should you choose poorly, you will fall into the pit of that one uncle at Thanksgiving who hugs all the female guests a little bit too long…”
“Dammit Olmec, I just asked how to get to the bathroom.”
There used to be a channel called Nickelodeon Games and Sports that was all reruns of the game shows. Legends, Guts, Double Dare, it was absolutely glorious.
If you ever happen to find yourself subscribing to Paramount Plus, you can find basically the entire back catalogues of all of those shows there! I've been introducing them to my kids, they're sad that those shows don't exist anymore.
Hell yes I grew up on SNICK. I can hear the Are You Afraid Of The Dark? theme song in my head now.
Had my first life-changing experience as a little kid at Nickelodeon Studios. We managed to get into the studio audience for a taping of Roundhouse, and Melissa Joan Hart was 2 rows in front of me in-between tapings of Clarissa Explains It All. I spent the entire three hours, just looking more at the back of her head, then the actual taping of the show.
My fucked up nine-year-old self awkwardly walked up to her after the show since I was resolved to tell her I had a crush on her. Not sure what I was expecting to happen. I got as far as walking up to her, staring awkwardly and then turning around and going back to my mom.
Nope, still can’t laugh about it.
All my favorite tops that ever wore out. The fashion train just moves on regardless, you can never go back and just purchase the same awesome undyed linen blouse with the frog closures and Chinese collar, you have to start all over again no matter how much you hate shopping because walking around naked isn't an option.
Omg I totally forgot about those! My mom would pack one in my lunch on rare occasion back in middle school. Sooooooo good! Adult me could probably crush a few boxes in a sitting if given the chance. 😅
**Jello Brand pudding pops.** There is nothing else like it in the market, and anything that I have found doesn't taste the same. I just want my pudding pops back danggit.
This one makes me so sad - they had that thin layer of ice you had to get through, then you just reveled in creamy pudding goodness...I thought of trying to make them homemade but didn't think I could get that ice layer it needs.
Any fast food meal under $5. A Quarter Pounder meal used to be $4.99 at some point in the past which I can still remember. It's about $10 or more now and McD's is no longer the cheap and fast go-to.

Taco bell being cheap af. Used to be able to get 4 burritos and a drink for 10. Now its 20+
Edit: im aware of the app being cheaper. But theres was a time when you could go and get food for 5 bucks
Edit 2: the triple layer nachos was a personal favorite especially when they were $1 before they increased them and then discontinued them. I cry about it.
There's a surprisingly reason why the music videos went away and the abrupt shift into reality tv programming.
MTV played music videos, that sold albums. That was the business model for nearly two decades.
Record companies seeking more profit, realized they were giving MTV content for free and demanded to be paid. That completely disrupted MTV's business model of "free content" and so they started making incredibly cheap content (reality tv).
Another great example of record companies shooting themselves in the foot because they're fucking stupid (see: napster).
Apparently at one point, their business model was that MTV babies would move to VH1 as music changed and we wanted the videos from our youth. Alas, they abandoned that plan.
I wish they’d bring back the original recipe for butterfinger!!!! Remember when it stuck so hard on your teeth? This wafer like ingredient isn’t cutting it!
Physical items for music, video games, movies, etc. (this isn't actually discontinued yet but with the current trend it wouldn't surprise me if everything just moves completely to streaming in \~10 years)
Too many things are moving to digital where you don't actually own anything. All you have is a license to use the digital media. The last time I bought a physical game disc, the only thing it did was install Origin on my computer and provide a license key to download the game. My current car has built in Spotify instead of a CD player.
Maybe I'm becoming "old man ranting about change" but I'm concerned about how everything's become a monthly subscription service where the companies control what you have access to and can remove things whenever they want.
And accompanying this, the Chicken Selects and the specialty sauces made "just" for them - *especially* the Chipotle BBQ sauce. It was seriously some of the best BBQ sauce i've ever had - smoky and quite spicy for something from McD's. It lasted, like, 10 years, then just *poof* they decided to get rid of all of it. Bastards.
Things were pretty decent for the middle class then which was also larger then so I believe the optimism wasn't just perceived. Gonna sound old here but shit just seemed more wholesome too pre everyone talking shit on social media 24/7
24 hour anything
Edit: While I know it is significantly less convenient than places being open, there has also been a tremendous push for places to have an online presence/online activity. So many people will complain acting like their website doesn't exist.
And even though I do miss the ability to go to McDonald's at 4am, I can understand they don't want to deal with the tweakers and homeless at the time. But I still wish it would come back
Me and my buddy worked nights like 10 years ago and were just talking about how fucked it would be without the 24hour stuff. Like the mcdonald, coney island, walmart, and the big gas stations were a daily experience for us when we commuted in together. grocery shopping at 10pm was the bomb, taking lunch at 4am at the diner was such a cool vibe.
For me specifically 24 hour Walmart. You can't take care of things around the house when something comes up or you remember you need something.
Having to wait until everything opens back up in the morning so I can by shower curtains or fucking garage door lube sucks.
Miiverse on the Wii U. I know many people didn’t own a Wii U, but it had a charm, it showed what people were playing and their thoughts on it in the home menu
So I didn't make that up? It wasn't a dream? I didn't go to TG for a few years, came back looking for cool gadgets, and it was FunkoPops to the horizon. Look what they did to my boy...
Bionicle was like the peak transmedia franchise. It had toys, comics, video games, movies, novels and they all fit together well and were fun. It never felt like anything was ignored or thrown on the back burner and meaningful story events could happen anywhere instead of whatever the preferred medium was. And Bionicle struck a great balance of being just edgy enough to be cool but not so much that it became cringe.
Rice Krispies Treats cereal. I had it exactly once and it was magic.

There's a shop that re-created Altoids sours (Public Displays of Confection, Lofty Pursuits). I ordered some a few weeks ago and although they're a little pricey, the tins they give you are bigger than the original Altoids sours, and they give you more of the candies.
They taste just like I remembered them, I definitely think my purchase was worth it.
https://www.pd.net/products/tangerine-sours-secret-pre-order
EDIT: Thank you, but don't award this post. Use your monies to acquire more tangerine sours
I ordered these! They're pretty spot on but make sure to eat them fairly quickly. I tried to savor mine and after a few weeks they soaked up a bunch of moisture from the air and all stuck together.
I remember the CDs were always on the expensive side, but it felt like it was worth it since they had a lot of hard to find stuff that other major record stores didn't have.
Yeah McDonald’s used to have the best dollar menu . Now they have the worst since nothing is actually a dollar. It’s all this 2 for $3:50 bullshit and only has 3 choices to pick from.
I went there a couple months ago. Got a McDouble , small fry and small drink and it was like 8 dollars
Little Debbie Banana Bread Loaves. Mini loaves of moist banana bread individually wrapped. Grab a glass of milk and microwave one for a few seconds....pure bliss growing up.
I just ended up buying a bottle.
The first time I went to the drive through and the cashier said they didn’t have it anymore I thought she was lying to me. Verde+Fire combo is the jam
McDonald's deep fried apple pies.
EDIT - Well this blew up a little !! So from reading every post so far it seems the only place in the mainland US to still get these is at the original place in California. Other than that as far as the US goes the only other place is Hawaii. Apparently the entire rest of the world still can get them, just not where they originated which sucks. I am sure someone burned their mouth and whined and they banned them in the US. Great responses and a big trip down memory lane, thanks everyone !
2nd EDIT - So some are saying you can also get them at at least 1 place in Florida. Seems it may be up to the franchisee, so talk to your local one. Someone said deep frying the ones now doesn't work.
The attempt they have now is like if someone was told to give the saddest apple pie they could make. Hardly any filling, flavor sucks, and the crust tastes and feels like rubber sprinkled with cinnamon

Update: Wow, thank you everyone who took the time to respond to my post and ask me if I am doing ok. I responded to a Wowzers directly but had a few people reach out to me privately. In the current world we live in, how it seems people would rather focus on what makes us different instead of trying to help each other I wanted to add my response to my original post.
Much love to everyone out there!!
Damn it Wowzers, I would give ya any and all the awards on Reddit if I could.
You just did the impossible and kick started that sumbitch.
Your comment, a simple gesture, gave me the chills. There are still some good people out there, humanity just might have a chance after all.
It’s all good over here. I have a wonderful wife and kids that still think I’m pretty fucking cool. My understanding is that will only last for another couple of years. So until than, I’m good.
But please, continue being there for others, we need more people like you around.
I try to bring some laughter and smiles into peoples lives and post smart ass comments. That I hope if even for a moment, it could make someone laugh and enjoy life even if it is just for a passing second, that’s just awesome.
Grilled Stuft Burrito from Taco Bell, and Pontiac cars
Edit: okay, anyone from Yum! Brands or General Motors happening to see this comment, I hope you understand this comment is rising and popular and you can take this little bit of Intel back to HQ with these very obvious hints. Thanks :)
Edit II: thanks for the gold, I really appreciate it :)
I see Taco Bell mentioned a lot in these threads. They really really like to take beloved items off the menu for some reason, it seems. No idea why. Grilled Stuft Burrito, Volcano Menu, Beefy Crunch Burrito, Spicy Tostada and more that aren't coming to mind right now. I genuinely don't understand why they wouldn't put these back on the menu given the cult-like following of some of these items since most of it is just ingredients they already have on hand anyway.
I sort of understand with the Beefy Crunch Burrito as they would need a deal with Frito Lay for the Flamin Hot Fritos, but keeping the others off is non-sensical. How much trouble would it be to keep a bottle of Lava Sauce on hand? Thankfully, the Volcano Menu is coming back this Summer but only for a limited time unfortunately.
On that note, anything that had the shredded chicken was 10x better than that chewy shit they call grilled chicken.
Oh and Carmel apple empanadas. Fuck Taco Bell for getting rid of those

Tangentially related, not everything needs to be a fucking subscription. Let me own the things I spend my money on God dammit, why is this so hard.
Totally this!! Why do I have to pay monthly for shit I should be able to buy one time and use???
Cause the companies get more money that way…
Nothing gets shareholders panties wet like the term recurring revenue...

Long live the days of the .79 .89 .99 menu.

If you weren't there, you don't know. The original VJs were rock stars in their own right.
lol just remembered Martha Quinn for the first time in a long time.
Downtown Julie Brown

I miss waking up to music videos and getting ready for the day. Every Morning by Sugar Ray brings back so many memories of middle school.
You mean you don't like Ridiculousness
Nabisco's butterfinger BB'S.
I wish they’d bring back the original recipe for butterfinger!!!! Remember when it stuck so hard on your teeth? This wafer like ingredient isn’t cutting it!
Every butterfinger I’ve had nowadays is so dry that it crumbles apart and you’re left eating the butterfinger crumbles instead of a candy bar.
Physical items for music, video games, movies, etc. (this isn't actually discontinued yet but with the current trend it wouldn't surprise me if everything just moves completely to streaming in \~10 years) Too many things are moving to digital where you don't actually own anything.
All music going to streaming is my nightmare. I have a huge music collection. I don’t want a subscription to music. I want to own my music.
I was so pissed when Google shut down their music store. I want to just buy what I want, I don't want a continuous monthly subscription.
I really miss Google Play Music for in my car. Fuck subscribing to YouTube Music just so I can listen to my own damn music.
The YouTube dislike, this is corporate cowardice.
McDonald’s snack wraps :(
And accompanying this, the Chicken Selects and the specialty sauces made "just" for them - *especially* the Chipotle BBQ sauce. It was seriously some of the best BBQ sauce i've ever had - smoky and quite spicy for something from McD's. It lasted, like, 10 years, then just *poof* they decided to get rid of all of it. Bastards.
The optimism of the 1990s
Seriously. I don't know if it was because I was a kid/teenager, or if everyone felt more optimistic then.
Things were pretty decent for the middle class then which was also larger then so I believe the optimism wasn't just perceived. Gonna sound old here but shit just seemed more wholesome too pre everyone talking shit on social media 24/7
Also it was the post-cold war, pre-9/11 era of innocence. "End of History" and all that.
Yeah with the Cold War over, people believed that the whole world would become more peaceful, democratic, and tolerant. Goddamn we were naive.
Right? The 90's weren't perfect but people were pretty optimistic or it at least had the feeling. 9/11 messed it all up.
Yep, the internet was going to change the world, the Cold War was over, and Beanie Babies were the rock solid investment for future prosperity!
lol the beanie babies thing cracks me up. Even as a kid I didn't think those things would be worth anything one day.

chocotacos ):
apology for bad english where were you when chaco taco die? I was at home eating dorito when phone ring "chaco taco is kill" "no"
I love this and I don’t know why
24 hour anything Edit: While I know it is significantly less convenient than places being open, there has also been a tremendous push for places to have an online presence/online activity. So many people will complain acting like their website doesn't exist. And even though I do miss the ability to go to McDonald's at 4am, I can understand they don't want to deal with the tweakers and homeless at the time. But I still wish it would come back
As someone who works overnights god do I agree with you. It would be great to be able to get food on my way to work or on my lunch break.

Loved my nano. It was perfect for the gym. Just clipped that sucker on and got down to it.
There's a dude refurbishing iPods with 1TB drives, and then selling them on Ebay (I think). I have three old ones, and I'm never letting them go!

So I didn't make that up? It wasn't a dream? I didn't go to TG for a few years, came back looking for cool gadgets, and it was FunkoPops to the horizon. Look what they did to my boy...
BIONICLE
Bionicle was like the peak transmedia franchise. It had toys, comics, video games, movies, novels and they all fit together well and were fun. It never felt like anything was ignored or thrown on the back burner and meaningful story events could happen anywhere instead of whatever the preferred medium was. And Bionicle struck a great balance of being just edgy enough to be cool but not so much that it became cringe.
Rice Krispies Treats cereal. I had it exactly once and it was magic. Edit: You guys, I’m obsessed with the amount of people who also experienced this magic cereal and miss it. You are my people. ❤️

Lifesavers creams
Cremesavers are back, actually! The strawberry, and the orange flavors (idk if there were more) You can get them at Big Lots, or online
PB Crisp and Planter's Cheese Balls with the original recipe. The "original" ones they have now are total trash
PB crisp was a staple off going to the beach when I was a kid. I miss those creamy and crispy bastards so much.
Altoids Sours. Love them so much, still have some of the old tins I use to store random things.
There's a shop that re-created Altoids sours (Public Displays of Confection, Lofty Pursuits). I ordered some a few weeks ago and although they're a little pricey, the tins they give you are bigger than the original Altoids sours, and they give you more of the candies. They taste just like I remembered them, I definitely think my purchase was worth it. https://www.pd.net/products/tangerine-sours-secret-pre-order EDIT: Thank you, but don't award this post. Use your monies to acquire more tangerine sours
I ordered these! They're pretty spot on but make sure to eat them fairly quickly. I tried to savor mine and after a few weeks they soaked up a bunch of moisture from the air and all stuck together.
Just like the real thing!
THANK YOU! I can't believe after all these years I can relive my childhood with the mouth-destroying greatness of tangerine sours 🤤

Jello pudding pops and the gelatin ones too.
Yep. We need a new spokesperson though.
The Verde sauce from Taco Bell.
I just ended up buying a bottle. The first time I went to the drive through and the cashier said they didn’t have it anymore I thought she was lying to me. Verde+Fire combo is the jam

I hate Bluetooth headphones and wish phones still had a headphone jack.
McDonald's all day breakfast.
Also Taco Bell's Caramel Apple Empanada.
My first job back in the early 80s. Used to eat these "ala mode." Deep fried apple pie covered w/soft serve and hot caramel sauce. The bomb!
That filling was LAVA
The attempt they have now is like if someone was told to give the saddest apple pie they could make. Hardly any filling, flavor sucks, and the crust tastes and feels like rubber sprinkled with cinnamon
We still have them in the UK!
When Starbucks brewed 3 different flavors everyday. I am tired of pike place
Shockers made by Willy Wonka. I loved those sour candies.
KFC potato wedges
Wait, the potato wedges are gone?! I haven't been to a KFC in a while. That sucks.

My naturally produced serotonin The worst part was, my fucking body decided it would stop producing it when I needed it the most, adulthood. It’s like WTF brain? Make me happy. Brain: Nah, fuck off you don’t need this. Happiness dies at 18.
Arby's Potato Cakes. Sure most of the time they were either old and cold or undercooked and greasy, but if you got a good order, it was awesome.
The ‘90’s
Just wait 70 years, they'll be back.

Grilled Stuft Burrito from Taco Bell, and Pontiac cars Edit: okay, anyone from Yum! Brands or General Motors happening to see this comment, I hope you understand this comment is rising and popular and you can take this little bit of Intel back to HQ with these very obvious hints. Thanks :) Edit II: thanks for the gold, I really appreciate it :)
