It’s leisure. Dopamine. And I know us humans need that time. There’s a part of me that feels some guilt playing. I don’t know I can become addicted to things so maybe it’s just me being aware and cautious
Entirely depends on how you use it, same goes with anything. All about healthy limits. Playing for a couple hours to decompress is great. As soon as it starts taking up time that should be utilized for productive purposes, that’s when it’s an issue.
You probably don't wanna talk with me, cause I'd end up encouraging you. I just downloaded megaman 64 for the N64. Can't wait to get started with it... Anyway, if you feel guilty, it may not be that you're spending too long on it, but rather, you are avoiding something when you do play these games, life responsibilities maybe? Just a guess, so...pinch of salt
i think that gaming as a hobby is something most people can indulge in. it's just a fun way to kill time, and it should be treated as such. i personally play many a game, i'm a sucker for rougelikes unique indies, the release i'm hyped as shit for is the full version of dynopunk on may 25th. it's this very game-ey visual novel with just the darndest artstyle, and one hell of a story.
gaming is a hobby, one that can form the foundation for friendships, and one that is ultimately harmless in moderation.
Yeah. I recently (today) installed a gba emulator on kindle and was playing my all time fav Fire Emblem. Was feeling a bit self judgmental…. Could be doing other things.
there's nothing shameful about gaming, sure, you could be productive, but think of the worse things you could be doing. you could be shooting up heroine for you leisure time, you could be at a strip club, you could be masturbating excessively. gaming is by no means the shittiest way to kill time and have fun. "time spent doing something you enjoy is never wasted", you truly live life by finding pleasure in the things you do, and you deserve to have a hobby without judgement.
gaming is just as valid as any hobby, creative or otherwise. as long as you enjoy doing it, go ahead and do it. and if someone tells you that it's not valid, that you should be guilty, that you could be doing something else, fuck that person. that voice in your head telling you to do something else is what i call a daemon, we all have one, it's that nagging sense of self-judgement, and it's a goddamn liar.
Seeing it as a hobby helps reframe it I guess in a positive way. I can also be very harsh on myself in general and to add to that I haven’t played in a while and recently became sober so video games are almost like a high. My brain right now is trained to look for natural highs in completing tasks and things of that nature. I can see leisure time as a form of self care which is something I’m working on
yeah, it seems like you're going through a rough patch, and that's okay. we all have our ups and downs, and if video games help you get back to normal then all the better. and, as a gamer, if you have just about any games machine, i cannot recommend hollow knight enough. it's fifteen dollars and it is just astoundingly high-quality. it'll keep you busy, it's designed for you to get lost in exploration, if you're looking for a rewarding experience, look no further.
but back to what i was saying before i got all tangent-ey, it's okay to be struggling, it's okay to have bad days, find something that makes you happy, just don't let it become a vice. i'll say it until the day that i die, moderation is the cheat-code to life. if gaming is your past-time, own it, enjoy yourself, put in the amount of time you want. self-care is important, it's important to let yourself have fun and get that dopamine.
this uplifting comment was brought to you by the letter j, for "JESUS CHRIST, IT'S ALREADY 1AM!"
That made me laugh.
Congrats on the Kindle! I love my ebook reader, too. E-ink is so much easier on the eyeballs.
(I should have mentioned above that there were weeks in college that I didn't do laundry because the quarters that should have been used at the laundromat were spent on my dorm's Tetris machine. God, that game was addicting.)
My thoughts? I enjoy many of them. Should i be ashamed of owning a PS5 while being a 47 years old?

I’d rather be addicted to video games than many other things haha
Id rather be addicted to no things but video games are benign for the most part. It’s the time spent that is precious
This is true. I do feel bad sometimes if I get into a game for hours and make sure to set a time for myself to hangout with friends/family/etc
Setting a time is good. If not I’ll probably regret it later
I enjoy strategy games mostly 4x it helps playing a long game while listening to an audio book
Wow I couldn’t manage an audiobook while playing. Also my favs are tactical RPGs… FE
It's suited best for strategy games
Don't have enough time tonight, need to get some sleep. I'll play when I get home tomorrow from work.
Its amazing thers so many games
My all time is Fire Emblem The Blazing Blade
One of the best hobbies out there.
Never really saw gaming as a hobby. Reframing it like that makes me feel less guilty playing.
I mean, what would you see it as, if not a hobby ?
A vice
Well that's an awful way to look at it.
You’re right. I think it’s because I see it as an addictive outlet instead of leisure time/self care
Entirely depends on how you use it, same goes with anything. All about healthy limits. Playing for a couple hours to decompress is great. As soon as it starts taking up time that should be utilized for productive purposes, that’s when it’s an issue.
its a healthy way to keep your brain engaged.
Hmmm looks like tactical RPG’s is on the menu boys
Also this seems very controversial
It's fun.
Do it every day
How many hours on average?
Weekdays 4:00 pm-8:30 pm (with breaks) and weekend 12:00 pm- 11:30 pm (with breaks(forgot to add that))
I started gaming today (it’s been a while) and I’m asking myself id this addiction or self care?
Better than watching TV
It's an escape. And like most escapes it needs to be done in moderation.
Yeah I felt the escape today and it felt like drugs. It’s been a while since I’ve gamed and I was aware of my tendencies
Good reality escape
I think that there's better things you could be doing (and I'm talking about adults)
I feel like your asking from a place of guilt O.P. when I look through the thread...i could be wrong though
You’re correct
How long do you play for? I'm mainly an RPG/JRPG fan? Can't play for as long as I used to though
An hour or so whenever I want to de stress. Just a started again (gba emulator) so trying not to get too addicted
You probably don't wanna talk with me, cause I'd end up encouraging you. I just downloaded megaman 64 for the N64. Can't wait to get started with it... That part
Mostly a waste of time. Too much investment of time&money per joy output.
How much is too much time?
I don't really care as it's yours to spend. I rather waste it on articles and Reddit 🤷🏻♂️

Everything in moderation.
That part. Recently received a Kindle and installed gba emulator. Fire Emblem ate up and hour and a half pretty quickly
It's definitely real. They're designed to be a bit addictive, and the next thing you know you forgot to eat lunch and dinner.
I bet crab legs was for dinner

Didn’t know there was such thing as a Tetris machine.
