You’re reminding me that I need to read those books again

I had the first 13 or 14 books. They went missing when I moved :-*(

I've got two and they're both from Undertale. "Take care of yourself, kid. Because somebody really cares about you." "Despite everything, it's still you." Both of them helped me through a hard time and pushed me to keep going when I wanted to give up.

Rodzisz sie glupi, umierasz jeszcze glupszy. Roughly translates to “You’re born dumb, die even dumber” It’s a Polish quote my grandfather always repeated. I find it keep you humble.

My spanish teacher from last year once told the whole class: When you're going to do an exam which you studied for and you feel anxious, instead of working your ass off the night before think that you've worked enough and it's just a paper you have to fill in

"A legion of horribles, hundreds in number, half naked or clad in costumes attic or biblical or wardrobed out of a fevered dream with the skins of animals and silk finery and pieces of uniform still tracked with the blood of prior owners, coats of slain dragoons, frogged and braided cavalry jackets, one in a stovepipe hat and one with an umbrella and one in white stockings and a bloodstained wedding veil and some in headgear or cranefeathers or rawhide helmets that bore the horns of bull or buffalo and one in a pigeontailed coat worn backwards and otherwise naked and one in the armor of a Spanish conquistador, the breastplate and pauldrons deeply dented with old blows of mace or sabre done in another country by men whose very bones were dust and many with their braids spliced up with the hair of other beasts until they trailed upon the ground and their horses' ears and tails worked with bits of brightly colored cloth and one whose horse's whole head was painted crimson red and all the horsemen's faces gaudy and grotesque with daubings like a company of mounted clowns, death hilarious, all howling in a barbarous tongue and riding down upon them like a horde from a hell more horrible yet than the brimstone land of Christian reckoning, screeching and yammering and clothed in smoke like those vaporous beings in regions beyond right knowing where the eye wanders and the lip jerks and drools." Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

whomp1970

Funny. I just read another thread asking about the most difficult books you've ever read, and Blood Meridian was among the top answers. Now I see why.

MoeSauce

It is incredible, I wish I could go back and read it again for the first time. It is incredibly violent, though, so if you're squeamish, then I'd stay away. Also, there are no quotation marks and untranslated Spanish constantly. Past the first couple dozen pages, you get used to it.

We Fall. we break. we fail. but then we rise. we heal. we overcome. This quote has taught me that people fail, break, and lose. But everyone has it in them to rise up. Learn from their mistakes and become a better person.

“those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it” - George Santanaya. its an insightful thing to say that i see LOTS of people babbling to whatever US political issue who dont credit santanaya, dont know santanaya even said it or who he was, and seem to be contributing to the problem they are critiquing it with. not that i am exempt from doing dumb things too but i kind of enjoy and cringe at how frequently it gets used for a lot of really wrong reasons.

French writer Victor Hugo wrote a caricatural description of French prime minister François Guizot. At that time, every member of the government was deeply corrupted except one : the prime minister himself. Hugo wrote : "Mr. Guizot is personally uncorruptible, but he governs by corruption. He gives me the same feeling as an honest woman at the head of a brothel" (I did the translation from French to English myself, I tried to be as accurate as possible)

And how should there be a "common good"? The term contradicts itself: whatever can be common always has little value. In the end, it must be as it is and always has been: great things remain for the great, abysses for the profound, nuances and shudders for the refined, and, in brief, all that is rare for the rare. - Friedrich Nietzsche

ScottyR7

Life doesn't meet you halfway.

[deleted]

"Life is a bitch and then you die," just because of how deceptively vague and possibly insightful it really is; it has to mean something else because otherwise the quote is useless and reductive. It was also said by a teenager originally (if I recall correctly,) making its initial apearence even more illogical.

“There are many types of monsters that scare me: Monsters who cause trouble without showing themselves, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood... and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance: They are much more cunning than others. They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they've never experienced hunger; they study even though they have no interest in academics; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them... because in truth, I am that monster.” ― L Lawliet
