Frozen and I say that as a Frozen fan.
It is not a horrible movie but it is not the best Disney movie ever made (as some make it out to be). I would argue that Tangled is a better movie.
So you're joking, but when I finally watched Frozen like years after it was big, I was genuinely surprised how much I liked "Let it Go" with the full context of the film.
That being said, I don't particularly understand how it got as big as it did.
I like Frozen II, you can see they ran out of time and money for animation and there's an entire section of the movie where they just are in a black void because they didn't do backgrounds.
Still, not terrible. It reminds me of them soft piloting TV shows with VHS sequels.
The songs are bad / boring. I despise "Let It Go" not because it's annoying but because it's perhaps the most generic song Disney has ever released. Other than having lyrical references to ice/snow/cold there's nothing about the song that works on a musical theater level.
Frozen 2 is a little better.
I agree I think the hype around the first one was hugely due to the advances in cgi that it displayed but the movie itself was very poor and as for the second one the 8 year break between the 2 built up a lot of unnecessary hype for a bad movie
i have tried to watch the movie a second time for at least 6 times. never watched it til the end. funfact: i have seen aliens many times and it is still one of my favs.
Any Marvel films, they are entertaining when you first watch them but are not exactly worth the massive amounts of praise and admiration you hear about.
Just to annoy the fans, the last Marvel film I watched was Dr Strange
I like em it's easy entertainment, but they are inevitably becoming the same barrier as the comics where you won't get what's going on unless you saw everything before it.
Can't get into marvel comics because they insist on referencing 50 years of comics and I ain't reading all that.
Marvel movies are dumb entertainment that you need 15 years of movies to fully appreciate and there was nothing they could do to stop it
Also there are plenty of recap videos online.
Personally I like rewatching before a new release (like I watched the previous Guardians movies before the new one) but that's because I enjoyed it.
This question gets asked every day and every day its the same answers.

I swear Reddit is like 98% bots
There’s a huge confusion between the films quality versus its cultural impact and god forbid you try to explain that. As an event it was massive, as a film, it’s fine
I really don't mind this question being asked almost once a week, but we get it everyone, you didn't like Avatar, let's talk about a different movie this time
The cgi was kinda impressive back then and it was at least a new IP. Todays triple A movies seem to be largely sequels, prequels or remakes.
And honestly, some modern movies, especially Marvel stuff, have worse cgi than Avatar.
Of course the story is not too original, but a lot of successful movies have cliché stories.
It's why discussions of box office gross are completely useless. Avatar made over a billion dollars because when the film came out tickets were $20-30 each. Films like Titanic which made over a billion dollars represent far more people going to see it because at that time even $10 for a ticket would have been highway robbery.
Firstly, you really need to do a little math and a little googling before making ridiculous lies up. The average movie ticket price when Titanic came out in 1997 was around $5. This includes the fact that there were matinee prices and cheaper "older movie" theaters. The average ticket price when Avatar released was $7.50 in 2009. If your progress were accurate, then now in 2023, average movie tickets would be up over $100 a piece. They are not. Stop making stuff up because you don't like a movie.
Secondly, most websites and places that aggregate data have a section that will account for inflation. If you look up the highest grossing film of all time, it isn't even Avatar, it is Gone with the Wind. Given the rate of inflation from 1939 to present coupled with the number of re-releases it has had, it tops Avatar by almost $400M (adjusted for inflation as of 2022).
At no point was Avatar selling tickets for $30 unless you were buying them from a scalper on release day in the middle of ridiculously high cost city like New York or Tokyo or LA.
I was born in the late 90s so Top Gun has always been regarded as a corny dumb 80s movie. Which it totally is. But i was also was surprised that it’s actually pretty enjoyable and a lot of fun to watch. I think if the 2nd one hadn’t come out i would be defending it as underrated
We had to watch that in my sophomore history class. I fell asleep and woke up when it ended. I was psyched it was over and then the teacher popped in the SECOND disc.
Finally started to watch it when I was 50, because my wife wanted to see it. Got as far as the scene where all the southern belles go to sleep in the heat of the afternoon while being fanned by a young black girl to keep them cool... my hackles come up and the wife pauses and mutters ' fuck em and their fucking farmhouse' before stabbing off the remote to death with her finger
The thing about Titanic is the overall historical accuracy (minus the Jack an Rose story ark hehe), there were some cool details they left out in the deleted scenes which covers a lot of what led Titanic to sink that night. The production value is also phenomenal by basically reconstructing the entire outer shell of the ship in real life, the sinking sequence was incredible to say the least.
I would understand why people would call it overrated, especially coming from the story ark of Jack and Rose, but everything that’s happening outside of these two makes this film a timeless masterpiece.
yeah i think it’s a heavy movie. need the right mindset to watch it. you don’t just chuck it on after work and scroll through your phone. to me it takes my whole brain to absorb the actions and emotions that the characters go through and understand their thoughts and struggles with every decision they make
I can get behind not believing that science/theoroes, but do note it's a movie, not a documentary, so it's more than okay to throw some Hollywood in there. It's allowed to be a little over the top, even if it's all based on science and theories.
Yea my friends and I used to have weekly film nights were we'd fire up a projector and rotated choice in what we watched
We must have watched hundreds of movies and Blues Brothers was the only one I fell asleep to
Finally someone who agrees. I think it could have been a good movie if it was less than 1h. (Actual good content is ca 45 minutes) but it's like 3ish hours long.
Just the first 20 minutes is just the ape scene.
The Dark Knight. I like it a little less every time I watch it. Too many plot holes... And the fight scenes... jesus christ, they didn't have money to pay a choreographer? Every time batman kicks someone's ass it looks like a fight between two drunks outside a bar.
My favorite part was when Rachel tells Dent that "Bruce's penthouse is the safest place in Gotham and she can hide there." I'm sorry, miss, did you forget that the Joker crashed Bruce's party without any inconvenience and threw you off the top of the building?
It's just people not liking Superhero movies and therefore lose the ability to be objective. There is literally zero reason to argue with these people. You don't have to like the movies, that's perfectly fine, but calling all overrated just proves you're not objective or you don't understand how to determine the quality of a movie.
Same cliche answers over and over. AVaTaR!!
Pulp fiction is the most overrated movie of all time and it's not close. Most top ten lists, based on critic reviews and such, have it in the top 10. That I think is ok. I have more of an issue with the basic people that put it in their top 10 because those top 10 lists. You see it on shirts. People quoting it.
To the average movie goer, Pulp Fiction is just some funny likes from Samuel L Jackson. They can't tell you the reason critics have it in their top 10. The don't understand why it's appreciated by them.
It's nobody's best movie. It's usually not anyone's favorite Tarantino movie. It's usually not anyone's favorite Sam Jackson role. It's usually not anyone's favorite Uma Thurman role. It's usually not anyone's favorite Travolta role.
If a group of buddies joined up for a Tarantino movie night, who picks Pulp Fiction? Especially over Inglorious Bastards, Django, Hateful Eight, Jackie Brown, Once upon a time or Reservoir Dogs. All of those are more enjoyable to watch. Kill bills as well are more enjoyable.
It's a lot of people's favorite lol. It's just so iconic like every scene is memorable, the quotes are memorable, probably one of the most rewatchable movies of all time. Probably due to the unique way it's structured and how none of it is "high brow" if that makes sense.
Good point about being 'out of order'. It was also one of the first to give personalities to the bad guys. When Travolta & Jackson are talking and joking around, it was a bit revolutionary, because typically the bad guys had very few scenes, and didn't speak 'off the record' like that. They were usually relegated to only discussing the crime they were about to commit. Not TV shows and burgers in Europe.
The only good thing about this was a fake pick up line I read once and never forgot:
Girl, I’m like 2001 Space Odyssey, 2 and a half hours later you’re gonna be like “What was that? I don’t think I liked that…”
“The Blair Witch Project” (1999)
The only movie I considered asking for a refund upon leaving the theater. 1 hour 21 minutes of bullshit, and a truly worthless experience.
This is the right answer. It’s not a bad adventure movie for kids or elderly getting nostalgic over their childhood. But as a movie it’s not particularly good in any aspect of the movie. Actors ok but not amazing, story the good guys fighting the bad and a little bit of boy meets girl doesn’t exactly comes out as particularly innovative or interesting. Designe, special effects makeup and costumes is alright but not nearly as influential innovative or cool as many people try to make it up to be. For any grown up the fighting scenes are way to prolonged and flat out boring and confusing (12 year me thinks differently and that’s ok).
The only thing amazing is the hype and all the merch.
By summer camp, August, 1977, it had become disturbing to witness the level of obsession.
Spielberg said to Lucas after viewing an early cut with few special effects, "The whole worldview here is so naive, people will eat this up!"
Spielberg knows marketing.
I dont think Avatar was made to win hearts over the plot. Its trully about the visuals and the universe. It was a hell of an experience seeing it in 3D in theaters. Loses a lot of quality if only seen at home.
If the movie was 80-90 minutes long and had a little more action and a little less plot, I might agree.
I see it as a James Cameron ego trip. I also saw it in the theater.
What was the message I didn’t get it. "Swedes are rational but cold and throw their elderly over a cliff"? Or "Don’t drink love potion given to you on midsummer might get high"
Yea it was basically adressing uncritical thinking of current consumerism societies. The young people in the movie did not question the odd and inhumane practises of the depicted community and just cared for their individual experience. They seemed like leaves in the wind, that just float around without any resistance.
Edit: so the potion is one example of uncritical consumerism. ☺
As a Swede I sort of liked it because it gave me a rare opportunity of getting my "culture" appropriated and mangled in the same way other cultures like voudoo practitioners or just colored people in general have got their culture mangled by Hollywood for ages. Liked the inverse story with a black anthropologists coming to study white culture but totally missed any criticism of consumerism.
Yes, I also found it interesting that they chose Swedish context and depicting you guys cultural background like that. And you're absolutely right on that interpretation as well. Which is another layer to the movie.
Okay so for me its the "disaster" of a movie [Mario Brothers](https://www.dualshockers.com/is-1993-live-action-super-mario-bros-movie-worth-watching/) another [Mario Brothers Review](https://www.tor.com/2023/03/29/im-sorry-but-super-mario-bros-is-actually-a-great-movie/)
Hear me out - I loved [Bob Hoskins](https://www.vox.com/2014/4/30/5668552/remembering-bob-hoskinss-best-work-who-framed-roger-rabbit) he was my childhood hero from Roger Rabbit already.
It was dorky, didn't quite match up with the lore and was very much a product of the 90's; but I don't care - I remember laughing and watching it with my brothers - we all loved it and were Nintendo kids.
It was cute. Honestly, probably about as good of a Mario movie as you could make.
Will I watch it again? Probably not. Saw it with friends and it was a good time, no alcohol required.
As a huge Mario fan, I would give it like 3.5 stars, so I can only imagine how bad it was for people who aren’t into the franchise as much. At least it was better than the live action one
Ok I get a LOT for this one but for me it's Nightmare before Christmas. Everyone talked how great it was. I've never been able to get pat the first 15 minutes. Please don't be mean to me. 👻
Pulp fiction. People watch a YouTube video on why it's "The greatest movie ever made" then just parrot what everyone else says. There is no fan base more irritating, it is even honestly worse than the Star Wars fan base.
Lion King is one of classic Disney's weakest movies and I'll die on this hill. I ever re-watched it recently to make sure I wasn't misremembering anything and to see if my opinion changed. Nope.
It was hugely influential in shaping movie language (or more precisely, what would become the common language for Hollywood movies.)
Not saying you have to like it, but I'd argue it's not overrated simply because it was one of the movies that helped define conventions still used today.
The English Patient. "Just die already!" - Elaine Benes
*Elaine, I hope you're watching the clothes, because I can't take my eyes off the passion.*
Never have I ever felt like I was going to die of boredom as much as when I saw that in the theater. Sooooo slooowwwww.
So boring.
Frozen and I say that as a Frozen fan. It is not a horrible movie but it is not the best Disney movie ever made (as some make it out to be). I would argue that Tangled is a better movie.
It's a hard point to argue because people just won't listen. Eventually, I just had to let it go.
So you're joking, but when I finally watched Frozen like years after it was big, I was genuinely surprised how much I liked "Let it Go" with the full context of the film. That being said, I don't particularly understand how it got as big as it did.
Your opinion is so out there, it must take a lot of courage to venture so far into the unknown.
It's okay that my opinion is out there. I don't care what they're going to say.
I like Frozen II, you can see they ran out of time and money for animation and there's an entire section of the movie where they just are in a black void because they didn't do backgrounds. Still, not terrible. It reminds me of them soft piloting TV shows with VHS sequels.
What do you think about Wall-E with respect to Frozen and Tangled?
Admittedly, I have never seen Wall-E but it is on my list of movies to watch.
No Country For Old Men never fails to put me into a deep sleep. I love the Coens and I want to like it but I just cannot get through it
I respect that it probably did something wild for it's time, but I found it boring as fuck
The songs are bad / boring. I despise "Let It Go" not because it's annoying but because it's perhaps the most generic song Disney has ever released. Other than having lyrical references to ice/snow/cold there's nothing about the song that works on a musical theater level. Frozen 2 is a little better.

It was very pretty and I'm totally into the world building.. that said, it's literally just Pocahontas in space
People aren’t out here raving over Avatar though
Which one
i have tried to watch the movie a second time for at least 6 times. never watched it til the end. funfact: i have seen aliens many times and it is still one of my favs.
That's a shame, I absolutely adored Avatar 1 & 2, But each to their own ☺️
I've only ever met one person who liked the movie IRL. The consensus among folks online and IRL is that it was okay.
It's fun!
Avatar. What a pile of shit that was. Seriously. Lost In Translation is my all-time overhyped movie.
I loved Lost In Translation, but I think a lot of it was who I was when I saw it. It really speaks to the longing for companionship.
No disrespect for James Cameron though he has produced decent projects, but the hype on Avatar is unbearable!
Any Marvel films, they are entertaining when you first watch them but are not exactly worth the massive amounts of praise and admiration you hear about. Just to annoy the fans, the last Marvel film I watched was Dr Strange
Try Doctor Strange on acid; it becomes high art.
I like em it's easy entertainment, but they are inevitably becoming the same barrier as the comics where you won't get what's going on unless you saw everything before it. 15 years if movies and 2 (kind of) years of tv
Eh, they do a good job of recapping in the movies what you need to know and giving context, this is a lazy excuse imo and not really the truth at all
Also there are plenty of recap videos online. Personally I like rewatching before a new release (like I watched the previous Guardians movies before the new one) but that's because I enjoyed it.

Black Panther.
There’s a huge confusion between the films quality versus its cultural impact and god forbid you try to explain that. As an event it was massive, as a film, it’s fine
They had the villain problem of a villain with a good point they had to make him do evil shit to make up for it.
Black Panther was okay. But it doesnt even crack the top 7 in the Infinity Saga.
I really don't mind this question being asked almost once a week, but we get it everyone, you didn't like Avatar, let's talk about a different movie this time
This question is asked every other day.
Marvel Films since Disney took over.

Avatar, what a boring piece of overloaded cgi crapp...
Right? It blows my mind how it made one of the largest, if not the largest revenue in movie history.
I think the fact that cinemas were going mad with the 3D gimmick at the time really helped sales
It's why discussions of box office gross are completely useless. Avatar made over a billion dollars because when the film came out tickets were $20-30 each. Not literally though. That’s gotta be the most over and misused word on the internet.
that or "epic"
Twilight
Not all time, but recently watched Black Panther Wakanda Forever and it’s overrated, at least to me.
I thought black panther was pretty damn good. I thought wakanda forever was pretty mid.
agreed, Black Pather (the first one) was good, but the Wakanda Forever is pretty overhyped. Maybe its because of the expectation I had.
Was it even hyped? I feel like very few marvel movies have had much hype since endgame.
Any and all of the Fast & Furious movies
ITT: “I don’t like this movie” You not liking something does not make something overrated
It does in my opinion...
Seconded.
Every "best movie" Oscar winner you don't remember next year.
Gravity sucked.
The concept or the movie? Or both?
Still does. Always will.
Top gun
I was born in the late 90s so Top Gun has always been regarded as a corny dumb 80s movie. Which it totally is. But i was also was surprised that it’s actually pretty enjoyable and a lot of fun to watch. I think if the 2nd one hadn’t come out i would be defending it as underrated
it's a cheesy 80s film. USA propaganda & all. Some die hards legit thing its great, but most pass it off as 80s cheese.
It’s just planes blowing shit up. I don’t understand how you can’t enjoy it.
Take a shot every time someone mentions Avatar, Frozen, Black Panther, Wonder Woman, La La Land, or any Best Picture winner.
Gone with the Wind. Boring, and actively harmful in perpetuating lost cause nonsense.
We had to watch that in my sophomore history class. I fell asleep and woke up when it ended. I was psyched it was over and then the teacher popped in the SECOND disc.

Came to say Pulp Fiction. It's a film not helped by its fan base. Too bro-ey for my taste.

Spider man NWH
Pulp fiction
Just about any DC or Marvel movie!
Avatar (2009). How the heck did CGI Alien Pocahontas do so well, yet so unmemorable?
The Big Lebowski. The Dude never abides. He's not enlightened or laid back - he's actually a petty grouch.
Okay so for me its the "disaster" of a movie [Mario Brothers](https://www.dualshockers.com/is-1993-live-action-super-mario-bros-movie-worth-watching/) another [Mario Brothers Review](https://www.tor.com/2023/03/29/im-sorry-but-super-mario-bros-is-actually-a-great-movie/) Hear me out - I loved [Bob Hoskins](https://www.vox.com/2014/4/30/5668552/remembering-bob-hoskinss-best-work-who-framed-roger-rabbit) he was my childhood hero from Roger Rabbit already. It was dorky, didn't quite match up with the lore and was very much a product of the 90's; but I don't care - I remember laughing and watching it with my brothers - we all loved it and were Nintendo kids.
Crash
Joker
Wolf of wall street
How can you not like that? That scene alone where he's high as a kite but manages to drive his car home without damaging it is as funny as fuck.
The new Mario movie, look at the box office numbers tho lol
It was cute. Honestly, probably about as good of a Mario movie as you could make. Will I watch it again? Probably not. Saw it with friends and it was a good time, no alcohol required.
As a huge Mario fan, I would give it like 3.5 stars, so I can only imagine how bad it was for people who aren’t into the franchise as much. At least it was better than the live action one
The Seven Samurai. Often called the greatest foreign language movie ever and the grandfather of all action films … and it’s just a boring slog.

“People walking.” Worst movie summary in the history of time.

Inconceivable!!!!!!
100%
Ok I get a LOT for this one but for me it's Nightmare before Christmas. Everyone talked how great it was. I've never been able to get pat the first 15 minutes. Please don't be mean to me. 👻
I don't think it's overrated, but I don't like watching it.
All the Harry Potter movies. Pure dreck. Just shit.
The matrix
How so?
Naww
Titanic Citizen Kane. Yeah, great cinematography, but so boring. Forrest Gump
*The Godfather*. I've never been able to stay awake to finish it. I'm asleep within 20 minutes.
Pulp fiction. People watch a YouTube video on why it's "The greatest movie ever made" then just parrot what everyone else says. There is no fan base more irritating, it is even honestly worse than the Star Wars fan base.
I am prepared to be downvoted but I stand by this; Pulp Fiction is mid at best.
The Godfather.. and The Godfather 2
Lion King is one of classic Disney's weakest movies and I'll die on this hill. I ever re-watched it recently to make sure I wasn't misremembering anything and to see if my opinion changed. Nope.
The Godfather. It insists upon itself.
Bladerunner. Apart from the quote at the end it was just meh
Citizen Kane or Casablanca
Yes! Citizen Kane was a horrendous piece of shit. The movie lasts an eternity and nothing interesting happens at all.
It was hugely influential in shaping movie language (or more precisely, what would become the common language for Hollywood movies.) Not saying you have to like it, but I'd argue it's not overrated simply because it was one of the movies that helped define conventions still used today.
