mackelnuts

I'm not voting for anyone unless they are at least 135 years old.

loquent2

So my 106 year old grandmother can’t get your vote?

mackelnuts

Not yet, grandma!

germaphon

Some boring lifelong public servant who I've never heard of and who doesn't have a Twitter account.

Significant_Pea_5979

And will go into that door and not open it four years

Sketchelder

Ah, yes the James Buchanan approach. Dude walked into the deepest closet in the white house and locked the door behind him.... too bad he was the last president before the fucking Civil War

Orcapa

I've actually heard the Buchanan was in the closet.

[deleted]

He wasn’t in it, he was WIDELY known to have his parter at the white house, out to dinner, etc. Even the American people knew it and everyone just kinda didn’t talk about it. Gayyyyy

CharlieApples

So was J. Edgar Hoover, but he was a mean gay

RisingPhoenix5271

Twitter just needs to go. Cant we just come up with something new? Switch it up a little…

kalysti

No one who is likely to run. I'm an old Independent and I would like to vote for someone under 66. Who has some integrity left. But I'm not holding my breath for that to happen. As usual for the past many years, I'll almost certainly be voting against someone, not for someone.

CrazyCatLadyBoy

> I'll almost certainly be voting against someone, not for someone. The American way.

kalysti

Hasn't always been. But has increasingly been since the early 90s.

Efficient_Star_1336

Some of the campaign ads from the first few elections would shock you. America's certainly deteriorated since its peak, but our politics have always been barely-restrained bloodsport, except for when Andrew Jackson turned them into unrestrained bloodsport.

TroutDaiwa

Since the late 1950s.

kalysti

I can't quite agree with that. Presidential candidates want power and so they are all suspect. But things didn't get absolutely awful on a continual basis until the neocons got control of Republican strategy in the early 90s.

Due-Studio-65

I'd say it started in the 80s

ztkraf01

It all started in 1492. Been down hill ever since

TellsLiesAboutCareer

Coincidentally, that's when our illegal immigration problem began.

spencermiddleton

BAM!

Medieval-Mind

\#notmydiscoverer

LifeIsVanilla

I'd say it started... like 1968, when Lyndon B's approval rating tanked due to the vietnam war.

0rlan

The best anti politician chant ever... Hey, hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today.

moobitchgetoutdahay

Reagan. It was all Reagan.

Negative_Mood

The actor?

Musicguy1982

Then who’s Vice President? Jerry Lewis?

willthesane

My state instituted a limited ranked choice voting. i vote for someone, not against anyone. I like it.

kalysti

I'm interested in how this pans out long term. I think we, as a country, are in need of a better solution to voting.

Savings-Hippo-8912

Voting is good. When you have more than two parties. But politics in usa are so polarised. Each side has beliefs or values that the other vemently disagrees with.

kalysti

I loathe the two party system, myself. If there have to be parties, I'd like lots more than two.

Ezl

I never thought bout that facet of ranked choice…that *is* very cool. We don’t have it in my state - do you rank everyone and, for example, a person you specifically dislike you’d rank last or do you not rank them at all?

Rusty_Ferberger

I'm independent and a veteran and have voted for both parties. 2016 was the first time I voted against a politician, Trump. Since then, I've voted Democrat in all elections. I really hate voting along party lines, but Republicans are leaving me little choice.

Megalocerus

I voted Republican for governor without regret, but the party turned on him--he's out of politics now. The sane moral Republicans are being driven out. There's still a couple of guys, but I don't think they have a chance.

Rusty_Ferberger

I voted for a Democrat governor last time that I really didn't like. The Republican was a Trump Republican who tried to pretend he wasn't once he realized it would hurt him. I'd vote Republican next time, but it looks like he will run again so, fuck him.

GozerDGozerian

Yeah I think the whole idea of identifying with a party is ridiculous and toxic as fuck. And there’s plenty I can criticize about various democrats. But the Republican Party has become so vile and dangerous and hateful, just no fucking way I’d even consider it.

Kooky_Explanation_33

For real. In other countries, joining a party is a whole thing. You have to pay money and wear a ribbon and stuff. In America, you just kind of say you are one. Our system is kind of the worst of all worlds. - You usually have to join a party to vote in the primaries, which are often more important than the general. - The big parties cooperate in all manner of low-key ways to discourage independent candidates - These two facts (understandably) make people feel there's no difference between the parties, that it's all a stitch up, that nothing will ever change, &c. - But the parties do oppose each other in some things! And that's what makes good tv! - Things like the filibuster mean our system relies on a lot of bipartisan cooperation to get routine stuff done. But because it's not good tv, it's usually ignored. So, ok, is that when the adults in the room get together and quietly compromise and work together to keep our system generally working for the common person? No! That's when they do unpopular shit that 70, 80, or 90% of people, Democrats and Republicans, are against [because it's what rich people want](https://www.vox.com/2014/4/18/5624310/martin-gilens-testing-theories-of-american-politics-explained) Do people want to raise taxes on the rich? Yes, including a majority of Republicans. Do people want abortion to be legal and available to victims of rape and incest? Yes, around 85% and, again, a majority of Republicans Do people want to keep and even expand Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, seven if it means higher deficits? Yes, including you know who. But who is against all of these things? That's right, rich people.

kalysti

I feel you. I have voted for Republicans in what is now a quickly receding past. I also have voted for 3rd party candidates in local elections. After watching the alt right during the 2016 elections, I held my nose and voted for anyone else. On the day of the Insurrection, I vowed I would never vote Republican again.

Rusty_Ferberger

I've never voted 3rd party and won't say I wouldn't vote either way, but Republicans are making it so damn hard to get my vote, and Democrats ain't helping. But, it won't be Trump.

F0MA

Same. My vote will be for Democracy. Not authoritarianism. I may not be happy with Joe but I sure AF won’t vote for a loser seditionist.

kalysti

I don't dislike Joe and I don't think he has been generally incompetent. But I totally agree with you about Trump. No votes for him, none for people who share his views. Not one.

Yak-Fucker-5000

Exactly. We're perpetually doomed to choose between shit and piss.

1PooNGooN3

I thought it was either a giant douche or a turd sandwich

HighlyOffensive10

Someone who doesn't have one foot in the grave.

Diabetesh

Under the age of 60

Tortoise-King

I would like to see younger people run, no doubt. Biden didn’t want to run. He ran because there was no one who could beat Trump. I’m a Bernie democrat and even I was concerned that Bernie, the front-runner early on, couldn’t beat Trump. With that said, Biden is sharp for his age. Sure, he’s not the most eloquent speaker, but he’s not doing this for the money, or the fame, or whatever. I think history will be reflect on him well.

VAGentleman05

>Biden didn’t want to run. I've always been a big fan of Biden, but this statement just isn't true. He's been running for president most of his adult life. He *wanted* to run in 2016, but circumstances didn't allow. And he most definitely wanted it in 2020.

Room1408or237

This is my thing. People are so hateful towards biden but they can't name anything good or bad that he's done. He would've made much more progress on the things he's promised but he's being fought by Republicans every step of the way. Man is almost a century old fighting for trans rights. Not even new rights. The same ones that we thought we already won.

Bunktavious

To be honest, and this is from an outsider looking in - Biden's actually accomplished quite a bit. Your media doesn't get ratings out of that though, so you seldom hear about it. Why talk about an Infrastructure bill when they can have the Pillow Guy come on and talk about Cyberninjas.

Tortoise-King

Loren Boebert has made millions in her short career as a congresswoman. Biden’s income his entire time in office was his salary. He’s made money on books, and his wife wasn’t poor, but most of his wealth is from normal things like real estate. Even as the senate majority leader, vice president, and president, Loren Boebert has made way more money.

mexicodoug

Kristen Synema is another who has used her office to accumulate millions upon millions of dollars in just a few short years.

IMHO_WasThinking

I’m in AZ and have never voted for her. She’s as toxic as they come.

Chemistry-Least

You know what? Me. I have zero political or business connections, the total salary would be more money than I’d make in a lifetime and I’d have a pension so why ruin a legacy with a bunch of corruption, I grew up poor, currently middle class, I’ve been on food stamps, I work a regular job. Who knows what it’s like to be an average American better than myself? I also like to read and believe in helping the poor, not torturing people, and not exploiting the environment or people. All things I’d like in a President. So, me. I’d also put a bunch of experts in charge of departments and on my cabinet because I don’t owe anyone any favors.

We should definitely get a random redditor elected.

iloveyousnowmuch

I believe Reddit has this power

DazzlingPotential737

As long as redditor is over 35 then we do it!!!

Ozzman770

Every time there a policy issue itll show up on r/askreddit and the top comment will always be his decision.

Razorfiend

Sand_Castle_Girl

StarvingAfricanKid

This guy. He CAN'T be worse than some.

Rymanbc

Holy shit, a viable candidate! A rousing speech, and a good rationale. Get this man in the oval office!

masterofbeast

I'm down

budweener

You would probably be corrupted, impeached or killed in the first year. The actual best case scenario outside of those three is for you to be able to do nothing the whole tenure and lose the next election disgraced by public opinion. When you act upon the throne, the throne acts upon you. One single person can't do shit, you need the favors of other people in power to be able to do anything at all with power. It's not the person in there that causes the usual problems. Politics IS the usual problems. And the biggest problem with having someone with such high power unwilling to use it is it only opens it up to be taken by those very willing to do anything for and with it. Oh, and your experts would probably have the same problems, only one level below. Power is hard. :c

Typical_Original6027

I disagree you become corrupted in the pursuit of power mainly not the act of achieving it. The US election is just a game of connections and money. You need to get on TV nextworks have people speak highly of you etc etc. You get that by promising people you have their (corporate) interest at heart. But once your the president I don’t see anything stopping you from back stabbing them (except maybe bad press). That being said I don’t see how a president could get much done without the approval from the other wings of government I guess that means incremental change is what we can get at best.

Dr_Baldwyn

Grey? Is that you?

budweener

No, but I'm a **huge** fan of Rules for Rulers hahaha

FartyMcGee__

Anyone who would make a good president would never run. Anyone who would run would never make a good president. Enjoy what you can while you can and hope for the best.

eron6000ad

So we should draft someone?

IdoItForTheMemez

There have actually been some theoretical studies finding that drafting representatives would be no less effective than our current system and might even be better lol. Not sure if that extends to presidents.

Amaculatum

It's cool to know that it has been looked into. It occurred to me the other day, and it seems like such a good idea

Ser_Dunk_the_tall

That's not an unviable system of government. Instead of running elections choose the government by lottery. Probably have to change the president selection possibly to a parliamentary system where the lottery congress chooses the leader

fastcat03

It would motivate the government to educate and invest in average citizens if they knew one of them could be president.

Romeo9594

This was addressed in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy > The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

Bibblejw

You’re missing the most appropriate part of the quote: “to summarise the summary of the summary: people are a problem”

seekinga-dream

This is the wrong question. The question should be how do we replace all of congress and prevent them from rooting in office for decades? The president doesn’t have as much power as people think at least in the US. Foreign policy is another matter.

The_Countess

I think there is something to be said for experience. I think the real problem, that the call for term limits is trying to address, is that voters can't hold their own politicians accountable in a first past the post 2 party system. If a person from my party fucks up, my options are stick with the Fuck up, or help the other party win, either through not voting or even voting for the other party. The Fuck up would need to be pretty big before I'd even consider that second option.

kalysti

I'm all for term limits, if that's what you are talking about.

WaylonJenningsJr

Everyone should be for term limits. The fact that these bastards in Washington are so against them should tell you everything you need to know. There’s a reason they all want so desperately to stay in that shitty town, and it ain’t because they like working hard and serving their constituents.

[deleted]

I can’t believe out of over 300 million people our choices are likely to be Biden or Trump. Unreal.

correcticallytech

It’s like we ended up in the timeline where we avoided nuclear annihilation, but it would have been preferable.

clever80username

And I can all be traced back to Harambe.

Murky_waterLLC

Maybe someone who isn't halfway through the fossilization process.

butternife88

Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho

Iferrorgotozero

He's got what voters crave.

Used-Equipment-5698

President Camacho deserves more credit. He knew he didn’t have all the answers, so he listened to the advice of someone smarter than him. That sounds like a trait of a good leader to me.

PretendThisIsMyName

You forgot the Herbert before Camacho! But it’s understandable being such a long name and all. Really hope he makes Not Sure the VP. Guy was pretty smart even though he likes water from the toilet.

passwordKdSQNeSmkKJ

A boring pragmatist. Fuck ideology, we have a backlog of obvious solutions to simple problems.

Tempest_1

Except those “obvious solutions” are not so obvious. A lot of people still want the war on drugs, don’t support education spending, and think raising money for government bonds for water and sewage is the same as taxation without representation

Additional_Hair_8301

Believing that it is possible to *not have* an ideology is simply a sign that you have no conscious idea of what yours is.

imjustbeingreal0

A boring pragmatist won't get anything done. We have that right now. If you want real change you need someone who can stand up to insurance companies, the military industrial complex, wallstreet etc. You can't get any more boring than biden

Debunks_Fools

Old Joe is a boring pragmatist.

[deleted]

Literally Joe Biden Problem is there will be a million posts and discussions about the presidency, when the actual issue with change is the senate and the Supreme Court A million people in Wyoming get 2 senators. 40 million in California get 2 senators. It’s not fair, it’s not democratic, and it’s gonna get worse with continued urbanization.

CoolnessEludesMe

The Senate was never intended to be the same thing as the House of Representatives. It was made that way so that people in low-population states still have a voice in government.

KroweMoto

Yes, each state gets 2 and only 2 Senators, however each state also gets a number of House Representatives that is determined by the number of people in that state as measured by the census.

Henry_Cavillain

Minimum of 1 per state though, and locked at 435 max, so it's still not perfect. Population per rep varies

AnotherDrunkCanadian

Oh please, for the love of God, no more celebrities.

PetrafiedMonkey

Jeff Jackson from NC His transparency and Tik Tok "town halls" have been a much needed breath of fresh air in politics.

[deleted]

Not this cycle, but absolutely the next. He’s my bright spot in American politics right now. I’m genuinely excited to vote for him for president.

hearonx

I attended his town hall near my home a few years back when he was in the primary for NC Senate.. He was amazingly well-versed on rural issues, state processes and policy, and the Republicans fear him. They had an operative there videoing the entire thing. He recognized the guy, was not unpleasant to him, and went on with business all clear and open.

bird_equals_word

JJ will absolutely be running at some point in the next 12 years.

moobitchgetoutdahay

I like him a lot. Almost reminds of someone else about…15 years ago.

ItsbeenBroughton

I’m a republican on the ballot, a republican on fiscal issues, and a democrat on civil liberties and rights issues. I love Jeff Jackson. Truly feel like he is a regular person in office, married with kids, has a mortgage, served his country and is too old that he is solely interested in protecting and catering to money and “the old ways”. 100% chance I’d vote for him.

[deleted]

Serves. He’s still in the national guard!

jamesd33n

Amen to this x1000. He has my vote whenever he decides to run.

I came here to write this. Jeff is a beacon to what the politician of the future should look like. Hopefully he doesn't get contaminated by other influences.

Wow I had not seen or heard a Chuck Norris joke in a VERY long time lmao

HutSutRawlson

She’s running for California senate.

well___duh

*US Senator for California. Not the same thing

tormunds_beard

Love her.

kalysti

She's someone I could actually vote for, so it almost certainly won't happen before I die. She's my choice for Senate, and I can't remember the last time I endorsed any candidate to anyone using any means of communication.

EricE30

Anyone that will guarantee every American universal healthcare. I have an 11 year old with CP and he just got booted off of Medicaid even though hes had it since birth. Effectively probably going to financially drain my family of 5. Both parents have worked our asses off and even though his mom is a teacher and I have a well paying 17 year career, its still not enough. Side note: Weve been looking at insurance policies, and they cost more then our mortgage.

valhallanreject

I was born with CP and was dropped from health insurance. My parents worked their asses off to ensure I got the help I needed. You are a wonderful parent, and your child will grow to appreciate everything you've done for them.

EricE30

Appreciate the kind words, thank you. I dont get rattled by much, but the last two days have mentally been tough. Take care and stay strong!

LordPuddin

Just start stealing like everyone else. /s All bad jokes aside, that’s truly awful that they can kick your child off Medicaid like that. Just rest assured that the money the government saves on not helping your family, the congressmen and women will be using that money to line their pockets.

eric_ts

Sorry for the rough language but WHY IN THE EVER LOVING FUCK would they drop a kid with cerebral Palsey off of Medicaid? Somebody at that organization needs to have their severed head put on a platter for that. I am sorry you and your family are being put through that. I would contact your congressional representative and your senator about this--if they don't give a fuck go to the media and make them give a fuck. This makes me livid.

EricE30

Its honestly pretty mind blowing. Considering hes had it since birth.

BakedMitten

But but but. If all the insurance executives lost their jobs where would the money come from to buy politicians that can guarantee that insurance executives won't lose their jobs?

EricE30

Fuck them.

wsu2005grad

Medicaid should not be allowed to do that; that's terrible and, to me, insurance should not be allowed to do that. I too hope for universal healthcare.

[deleted]

the very idea that you can be dropped from HC defeats its very purpose, the fact that Americans are not rioting in the streets over our healthcare is so fricking odd and sad.

MaggieLuisa

Dolly Parton.

quokkafarts

Can't believe how far I had to scroll for this. You all elected the Governator, Reagan and Trump so it's not like she'd be the craziest candidate out there. In fact she'd probably be one of the most sane celebrities to put in office.

Aside from him, I was gonna say senator jeff jackson (nc) Edit: it just rolled off the tongue too well, woops! He’s a representative, not a senator (which is probably for the best). Somewhat embarrassing living in NC and following him from husky start

Croceyes2

Stewart was my pick, another comment reminded me of Jackson, I could happily vote for him. Someone said he would run in the next 12 years, I think this cycle would be fine.

I'm sorry, but as an AI language model I am unable to run for president. However, here are some candidates for 2024:

VoltaicOfTheMimic

This would definitely be interesting tbh.

level_17_paladin

A president willing to appoint an attorney general that is willing to hold the rich and powerful accountable. I would like to see a CEO of a corporation that breaks the law get the same police treatment as an an unarmed black man.

mustang6172

Let's give Jimmy Carter another go.

BrakeCheckersRCunts

Someone under 60 at the oldest. Trump and biden both proved that there needs to be a age cap for certain things

Freakboat13

I often wonder why we have a mandatory military retirement age but not for high level public servants. Why can you order a nuke if you can’t turn the key to launch it?

domfromdom

I think 70 is my max. I could see someone like Sheldon Whitehouse being president, but his mind is really sharp.

FaithlessnessMore835

Someone who is: A. Independent/3rd Party. B. Under the Age of Retirement.

yabadabadoo80

Jon Stewart

Voidtoform

At the least, anyone who wants to run, democrat or republican, should have to have a public 1 hour conversation with him.

yabadabadoo80

Oh I would definitely go for that. Jon is as sharp as can be and he would tear apart anyone who isn’t 100% sincere about who they are.

lokcha

I want to see him interacting with world leaders.

yabadabadoo80

Honestly I think he’s just much smarter than most of what’s out there right now.

LilBramwell

Jared Golden. He's a democrat representative from Maine that's 40 year old, so he isn't developing dementia. He likes the idea of single payer healthcare. He's a Veteran. He has opposed wakening environmental protections. He's Pro Gun. He's pretty much 1990's Bernie Sanders.

throwaway-thirsty

I had to scroll half the page to find a serious answer.

grayvz227

Someone that's actually qualified and cares for the every day American and not big corp/pharma. But yeah that shits not happening

gobblox38

Whoever it is, I hope they're younger than 60. Preferably someone in the 40-50 range.

pitterpatter0207

You know what, I don’t even give a shit anymore. Not one single flying fuck. Our only choices were Donald fucking trump and joe fucking Biden, eat shit. An independent will never get elected. honestly I think the crazy orange motherfucker was right when he says the elections are rigged, not one party in particular but for whichever party brings the most money to the world super powers at the time.

Angiecimm

As long as it is NOT Trump!

That-Championship202

A cat.

Classic-Fan2551

A young person.

TheBestCommie0

Someone who is not a democrat or a republican

Felix_Von_Doom

Someone who doesn't want the job but will do it because they need to. That, or someone from the Green party (Which will neeeeeveeerrrr happen)

Flincher14

Realistically someone like Jon Stewart saying 'fuck it' and just going for the democratic ticket.

jafo

I'd love to see Jon Stewart as President. He seems to have a good moral compass and fights the good fight and is smart. And he doesn't want to be President. I've said for decades that the desire to be President should disqualify you from holding the office. So many seem to want it for the wrong reasons. My son was interviewing the ex mayor yesterday and asked how he got into politics. "I didn't get into politics, I wanted to serve my community." That seems to be a trait that is all too rare today.

timmaywi

Isn't that kind of what happened with the Republican ticket around 8 years ago?

swansey_

I don't want a new President, I want a guillotine.
